i bought a copy of this set last summer, and i must say that it’s been one of the most-listened to items here @ the reckankomplex/mms offices as of recent. i’m happy that i finally got around to stocking this gem of a compilation, containing all of the music originally released in the early 80s by this californian new-music label on a series of 10” records...

back by popular demand (and available for the first time on cd), this boxed set of three cds collects all the music released on a popular series of 10-inch vinyl records that were put out by cold blue in the early 1980s. during the cold blue label’s first incarnation, this music by seven west coast composers—barney childs, rick cox, michael jon fink, peter garland, daniel lentz, read miller, and chas smith—created much of the company’s reputation as a challenging and always interesting source of new music.

although bound together by a common concern with music's basic sensuality, the pieces collected here are wide-ranging in style—process-driven works, carefully through-composed pieces, ambient soundscapes, and music that draws on influences from around the world. in instrumentation, this music is also wide-ranging—from violins accompanied by gourd rattles to an ensemble of clay ocarinas and whistles and flutes to works for piano (solo and duo), synthesizers, singers, speaking voices, cello, electric guitar and clarinet, and perhaps the only known piece of new music for pedal steel guitar accompanied by multiple dobros.

the diverse, free-spirited, genre-bending music in this set was characteristic of certain trends in west coast music of ‘80s. and, to some degree, most of this music tangentially addressed the lingua franca of '70s minimalism—embracing certain of its aspects, fleeing others.

other than the pärson sound disc (on subliminal) - this is the earliest transmission from the swedish psych-minimalist posse (remember: all of this activity was spurred on by terry riley’s visit to gotheburg in 1967). more straight-up “rockin’” than the majority of the others, but highly admirable in it’s directness...

international harvester måste betraktas som de sanna flower-power pionjärerna i sverige och bildades i stockholm 1967 som pärsson sound, som blev international harvester, som blev harvester, som blev träd, gräs och stenar. de var sant alternativa pionjärer och var en av drivkrafterna bakom festen på gärdet och gjorde en hel rad intressanta happenings bl. a tillsammans med pistolteatern.

träd, gräs och stenar är fortfarande ett livligt band, sveriges äldsta rockband!, och har många fans även utanför sverige, som t ex stephen malkmus m fl.

1969 debut album from this stripped-down incarnation of pärson sound/(international) harvester, featuring bo anders persson (with whom you may be familiar due to his piece “protoimperialism” being on the flipside of folke rabe’s “was?” in it’s original wergo issue... no? i need to get out more...)

i make no effort to hide my love of this or any ramshackle commune-dwelling free-love free-psych - while certainly of its era, it’s fractal-like growth in influence over the years has yielded a strong whisper-network of followers.

(and yes, the song in the sound-clip is in fact the same one i covered on swarm & dither - just so loose & raw...)

morton subotnick was a phenomenon in the late '60s, the first composer to write substantial works for synthesizer that had a wide audience. he has been mentor to generations of composers, and his influence is so pervasive that it would be impossible to trace completely - the electronica movement, for one, reveres him.

this release brings together two of his classic analog electronic works which were previously only available on lp. the dvd allows you to experience these works "spatially" in your own home - in high-definition sound!

generally speaking, contemporary musicians produce too much stuff. it is easy to do. but if you feel like sighing, "oh, it's another mika vainio cd", then mr vainio himself has anticipated such sentiments with the opening track, a 2 minute blast which sounds like an angry animal breaking free of its cage. what follows is probably vainio’s most accomplished work to date, a series of rich soundscapes whose beauty is always on the edge of darkness.

"in the land of the blind one-eyed is king" is mika vainio’s 3rd solo cd for touch, after kajo [to:43, 2000] and onko [to:34, 1997]. best known as one-half of pan sonic [blast first], mika is from finland and now lives in berlin.

not wanting to bang a drum, anyone who has been invigorated by the work of mika and ilpo in pan sonic will be keen to hear these more pastoral takes on their more propulsive sound – in places, being reminiscent of artemyev's recordings for tarkovsky films, in others, suggesting sound recordings of frogs and insect life. all framed by the distinct touch of mika vainio, who confirms his long–standing reputation as one of the most acute musicians of our times.

der michel und der dom ist ein (klang-)kunstprojekt, bei dem die hamburger hauptkirche st. michaelis ("michel") und der jahrmarkt "hamburger dom" klanglich miteinander verwoben werden. ausgangspunkt waren von costa gröhn an beiden orten gesammelte tonaufnahmen. diese wurden im frühjahr 2003 und 2004 erstellt und in jeweils unterschiedlicher auswahl an zehn klangkünstler zur weiterverarbeitung übergeben. ausschließlich auf basis des klangmaterials sollten bis zu siebenminütige kompositionen entstehen, unabhängig von und ohne kenntnis der anderen arbeiten - mindestens ein teilstück der michel- und eins der domaufnahmen sollte vorkommen. auf der cd spiegelt sich das spannungsverhältnis zwischen dokumentarischem purismus und kreativer eigenleistung wieder. den 10 remixen folgt eine auswahl der ursprünglichen feldaufnahmen.

the michel and the cathedral are in (sound)kunstprojekt, with which those will verwoben klanglich with one another hamburg main church pc. michaelis ("michel") and the fair "hamburg cathedral". starting point were of costa groehn at both places collected clay/tone photographs. these were provided in the spring 2003 and 2004 and handed over in different in each case selection to ten sound artists for subsequent treatment. exclusively on basis of the sound material siebenminuetige compositions should develop, independently of and without knowledge of the other work up to - at least one section of the michel and one of the cathedral photographs should occur. on that cd is again reflected the stress ratio between documentary purism and creative own contribution. a selection of the original field photographs follows the 10 remixen.

killer cd/dvd set featuring, on the dvd, an experimental film by keith evans with a score by jim haynes & loren chasse, aka coelacanth... and a cd containing said score, which works famously by itself sans visual accompaniment...

in the “decay music” circle, for my money, coelacanth are the front-runners.

jim haynes and loren chasse have collaborated with keith evans to create coelacanth's fourth and most complex record. culled from two performances -- a five-hour recording session during matmos's 96 hours of performances at the yerba buena center for the arts, and an audio/visual performance with keith evans -- wrack light in copper ruin explores the the symbiosis of materiality and sound, and its infinite network of metaphors and allegories. like an abandoned aquarium in which an accidental and incongruous microcosm takes shape, coelacanth's sound illustrates a constant evolution of decay, encroachment, and repossession of the border space between the natural and the man-made. with wrack light in copper ruin, coelacanth also meditates on the space of performance, the tactile nature of the creation of sound, and its ephemeral, elusive and entirely subjective character. the visuals of keith evans further the exploration with their organic, nocturnal, energy. comparatively, wrack light is more delicate than coelacanth's previous recordings, inhabiting a space where artists such as jonathan coleclough, andrew chalk, mirror, and mnortham can be found, yet it maintains the mysterious, oceanic nature its name implies.
