p!? 016 - mattin "object of thought" lp

total time: 30' 03"

limited edition: 300

design: lorenzo senni

artwork concept: mattin

release date: 20/12/10

mastered by r. becker

"object of thought" is a stunning must have release by one of the most deep thinking artist in the field of noise and improvised music; mattin's voice is crushed and modulated by feedbacks and distortions and reassembled into a stream of multilayered thoughts and abrasive / harsh sounds. this is the mattin's new work since "noise & capitalism", the critically acclaimed book that explores the relationship of experimental music with the economic system that we are living in.

... is it possible to take self-reflexivity to the point of positive feedback while making a commodity out of my intellect? can this process help me to understand how i am objectified by capitalism? this is a very difficult question, as i am using english which firstly, is not my mother tongue, and secondly is the language more aligned with capitalism. to what extent does the use of english language shape my thoughts and actions? if our general intellect is appropriated by capitalism, can we get it back through a process of improvisation with our thoughts? can my unconscious be my instrument for improvisation? can we produce our subjectivity through the language that we are improvising with? ...

... during the first week of february 2010, from monday to friday, i appropriated the usual working times (9 to 5pm) in order to set up a framework and impose some discipline. i went to alpha electro-acoustic studio, visby, i recorded my thoughts and then began to cut, edit, distort ... as a way of making a montage of my own subjectivity, as a way to dismantle myself. if noise can be everything it can also be my lack of articulation. by using my thought processes as material for improvisation, i tried to explore the limitation of the given situation, understanding that at the same time i am objectitfying my thoughts in the vinyl that you are holding in your hands.

professionally duplicated cassette with laser printed j-card
artwork by greg davis

mirror to mirror is alex twomey from los angeles. his previous mirror to mirror music has been released on ekhein, jugular forest, arbor, gift tapes and more. while alex usually offers up blissful cloud spaces, here on 'yesterday' he moves in a much more melodic way. joyous sequences, bright shapes & radiant harmonics. reminiscent at times of michaal stearns' 'm'ocean'. alex still retains the blissful, peaceful and lush feelings but now its shaded with more movement, energy and inertia. the shape of things to come?

as-003 - sean mccann - "sincere world" lp

listening to new work from sean mccann is always an exciting prospect. go far back into this young pioneer's catalog and you'll without a doubt uncover a collection of music as diverse as it is long. what you may also notice is the consistency with which sean portrays himself.

his music is always fearless, frank and personal. sincere world is another turn toward sean's signature earnestness. open resolve and the capital, both cleverly laced with swirling filter manipulation and confounding superimposition of manic and sloth-like compositions, exposed us to a more playful side of mccann's persona.

these works are on the surface a bit zany, but deeper down they still maintain a charming character — something that draws the listener in magically. sincere world is the somber younger brother to these two. sincere world is adrift on badalamenti-like lethargy, skeptical of the world around and unsure of what to do about it.

but despite his bashfulness, he is every bit as charming and perhaps even more so, for there are no rough edges on him. in six movements, sean takes us from under the bed to behind the bleachers and finally, to the bottom of the sea. recorded mostly in 2009, sincere world has after two years in hiding, finally mustered the audacity to come out into the open. this is the world sean mccann lives in, and i want to do everything i can to live there too.

geoff mullenaccidental guitars” long playing record

  • accidental guitars (2)
november 2011 release ; finally in stock !!!

... originating in a pair of concerts played in geoff’s native providence (one in a rope factory, one in cf’s storied operatheque) the subsequent recordings (made in the spaces with a comparably high-fidelity digital field recorder) were laterplayed along” with a number of times to an a-synchronous medium (cassette walkman, into which an electric guitar was directly plugged into the “mic” input) ... later still, the original room-fidelityrhythm track” was “aligned(although, not specifically so) with a pair of the tapedaccompaniments(panned left & right) and, voila, “accidental guitars” was born ...

... while this process may partially parallel brian ruryk’s, the resultant pan-fidelity / spatial crackle has virtually nothing to do with ruryk’s brand of mile-a-minuteguaifenesin blues” ; it’s slightly closer in spirit to mimeo’s “sight(there’s a similar, twombly-esque aesthetic at work here as well) only actively embracing chance as a partial compositional crutch than a holistic ethos ... the palpably deep image (again, crisp, but backgrounded elements cut with macro, but lo-fi foregrounds, rife with gain-staged “pumping”) gives the impression of a menagerie of miniature insectoid motion, made all the more impressive by geoff’s lexicon of fluttering preparations & extended techniques ...

... i love this record ; it captures geoff’s general approach to music in a way that had yet to be so well articulated on a tangible object... if you’re at all interested in the intersection(s) of “process music”, free improvisation, and the grayer areas of 21st century composition, i urge you to check this out (you’ll love it, trust me) ; highly recommended !!!

geoff mullen - accidental guitars - rel018
edition of 350

geoff mullen presents a new side of his ever-changing and open language, dealing here with his rawest material to date, and in many ways finding himself in a homecoming to the guitar. on ‘accidental guitarsgeoff expands his instrumental language with his unique variety of invented, accident-prone technique. re-contextualized live performances are filtered through an intuitive sense of form and pretexts, leaving us with an intense, jarring, pointed, and textural compositional language.

with little more than an electric guitar, he conjures abstract formations and clattering percussive tones that are starkly contrasted with tape hiss and sudden echoplex’d delay. sustains calm the mood throughout and create a beautiful and oddly soothing atmosphere that seems to move in all directions at once.

the music on ‘accidental guitars’ has an ability of creating form out of being lost, and achieves a lucidity through this sense. this record is a unique document, finding geoff between forms and excepted styles, and seeing him off, once again, in another new and exciting direction in his music.

dead reptile shrine the sun of circles and wood 2lp

finally, the legendary finnish black metal project returns with the first full-length album in years! with a unique and encompassing sound, dead reptile shrine has always been uncomfortably slotted in the black metal genre but drs fits right into the weird forest catalog. "the sun of circles and wood" encapsulates all aspects of the dead reptile shrine sound: primitive riffs, ambient synth pieces, droning backdrops, snarled vocals, plaintive cries, satanic chants, the works. but this album isn't a celebration of darkness -- it's a portrait of a soul being torn apart by dark and light elements. the poor listener is dropped down a well and left to wallow in the stench of her own soul's filthy excrement and only occasionally alleviated by glimpses of light at the top of the well that seems so far, far away.

the sun of circles and wood was mastered by pete swanson and comes in a beautiful full-color deluxe gatefold vinyl edition limited to 500 copies.

strange men in sheds with spanners lp dc461/stp 5

street date: december 6, 2011

previously unreleased from 19811985

the collected sounds of manchester after midnight, circa early 80s. never released in it's day, this is the last of the red hot groovys, with pete shelley inducing his salon of wild-eyed electronic freaks into a home-recorded maze of beats, grooves, in-jokes, high-art references and beyond, all of which resonates perfectly with our latter-day understanding of electronics, outer limits and yes, even popular music sounds.

a little bit of history is a dangerous thing. how then would a present-day acolyte of punk rock’s strict regimen explain how pete shelley launched an avant-garde diy label while riding high on the british charts and touring internationally back in 1979 and ’80? today, buzzcocks’ sound is recognized as a template for the punk-pop sound, but the atmosphere in which they and their contemporaries gestated was markedly different than today’s pop-punkers might expect: a cultural free-zone where anything went, not just the fast and loud. early-wave british punks were looking for something different: outsider prog sounds, electronicmusic”, primal screaming, free-jazz—anything, as long as it was interesting and set apart from the blandness of mainstream product.

loving the art of records and their wayward appeal, it was only natural for shelley and francis cookson to conceive groovy records as a way to make some truly freaky (and decidedly un-punk rock) records, and do as much of the work of making the records themselves as they could. these releases represent some of the farthest-out sessions on the wild-to-begin-with late-70s manchester scene. that three of these four albums were released in the space of one big year, 1980 the one real year of groovy’s existence, is further testament to the swirl of passions in swiftly morphing times.

free agents was the first of the lot, with an album named after its price, £3.33. cookson took live performance tapes from a tiller boys show (a conceptual band featuring himself, eric random, and, when available, shelley) and added some additional recordings using tape loops, feedback and anything else he could get on there. it ranged around from post–“revolution 9collage to wack beats that one might associate with the emergent krautrock to stark industrial moments, flowing into each other with an organic, freely improvised quality. packaged in 12sleeves with photocopies of cookson scribbles pasted on the front and back, free agents was diy all the way.

the second of the groovys was actually the first to be recorded, back in 1974. sky yen dated back to pete shelley’s college days, where he chaired an electronic music society, playing records over the intercom during lunch hour. after he’d made the recordings that became sky yen six years later, he added them to his playlist—and his schoolmatesconsternation. the material wasn’t exactly easy listening / ambient style—it was raw waves of oscillator tones, wildly leaping up and down and stretching out into a pair of twenty-minute pieces. thirty years of electronics-saturated music culture lends perspective to the appeal of sky yen—the album’s edges are still jagged and sharp.

surrealism raised its willfully mutated head on the third groovy release, hangahar, credited to sally smmit and her musicians, special guest lindsay lee. claiming to be the soundtrack of the film hangahar, the album was inspired by a casual demonstration of a made-up sung language. a full-blown recording session captured this previously unheard quantity, the better to wake the world to its allure. the groovy gang broke out the oscillator and any other synth devices they had on hand (along with a kitchen cabinet full of impromptu percussives) to back up the operatic overtones of the mysterious eponymous chantueses via drones, riffs, chanting and, with reverb pots fully open, loads of ominous atmosphere throughout. despite the deep feeling of synchronous accord throughout this recording, it has proved to be something of a path not followed for the once and future ms. timmssally, that is, of eventual mekons fame.

this was the last the world heard of groovy — until now. their house of ideas wasn’t spent by any means—as of 1981, another session was planned under the general description “a man sprays a ford fiesta brown” but that never came to pass. a sea-change was signaled with the buzzcocks’ break-up, pete shelley’s subsequent solo career and energy going to other projects. however, even as these events were unfolding, recordings were made on a porta-studio at pete’s place that further realized the groovy direction. after the pubs closed, pete brought back a motley crew of usual suspects and special guests, broke out the synths, drums and what-have-yer attitude, resulting in a wealth of additional material that provided private listening pleasure for the groovy alumni over the years. culled from francis cookson tapes, these pieces make a fourth groovy installment entitled strange men in sheds with spanners that features a bent towards more disciplined rhythm pieces scored with a very purposeful array of synthetic sounds — truly the lost next new wave of groovy, finally crashing on our ready shores in 2011.

so here it all is, each of these lps in their own faithfully replicated jackets. these four aural tomes will be collected together for a cd box release in early 2012 —but really, what are you waiting for? it’s been over thirty years’ now—get groovy!

minimalist freaking meets faux-mythic language and outsider arias with the cream of the groovy crew along for the ride. sally smitt (say it backwards, mekons fans) and cousin lindsey lee are the divas and a modified tiller boys get free at last behind them.

originally released on groovy in 1980

a pre-buzzcocks outing from their chief songwriter, sky yen is a song-free excursion into raw synthetic oscillation waves, setting the tone for what groovy could be before those parameters had been established, or even sighted. a classic in rock-and-roll electronic daytripping!

a little bit of history is a dangerous thing. how then would a present-day acolyte of punk rock’s strict regimen explain how pete shelley launched an avant-garde diy label while riding high on the british charts and touring internationally back in 1979 and ’80? today, buzzcocks’ sound is recognized as a template for the punk-pop sound, but the atmosphere in which they and their contemporaries gestated was markedly different than today’s pop-punkers might expect: a cultural free-zone where anything went, not just the fast and loud. early-wave british punks were looking for something different: outsider prog sounds, electronicmusic”, primal screaming, free-jazz—anything, as long as it was interesting and set apart from the blandness of mainstream product.

loving the art of records and their wayward appeal, it was only natural for shelley and francis cookson to conceive groovy records as a way to make some truly freaky (and decidedly un-punk rock) records, and do as much of the work of making the records themselves as they could. these releases represent some of the farthest-out sessions on the wild-to-begin-with late-70s manchester scene. that three of these four albums were released in the space of one big year, 1980 the one real year of groovy’s existence, is further testament to the swirl of passions in swiftly morphing times.

free agents was the first of the lot, with an album named after its price, £3.33. cookson took live performance tapes from a tiller boys show (a conceptual band featuring himself, eric random, and, when available, shelley) and added some additional recordings using tape loops, feedback and anything else he could get on there. it ranged around from post–“revolution 9collage to wack beats that one might associate with the emergent krautrock to stark industrial moments, flowing into each other with an organic, freely improvised quality. packaged in 12sleeves with photocopies of cookson scribbles pasted on the front and back, free agents was diy all the way.

the second of the groovys was actually the first to be recorded, back in 1974. sky yen dated back to pete shelley’s college days, where he chaired an electronic music society, playing records over the intercom during lunch hour. after he’d made the recordings that became sky yen six years later, he added them to his playlist—and his schoolmatesconsternation. the material wasn’t exactly easy listening / ambient style—it was raw waves of oscillator tones, wildly leaping up and down and stretching out into a pair of twenty-minute pieces. thirty years of electronics-saturated music culture lends perspective to the appeal of sky yen—the album’s edges are still jagged and sharp.

surrealism raised its willfully mutated head on the third groovy release, hangahar, credited to sally smmit and her musicians, special guest lindsay lee. claiming to be the soundtrack of the film hangahar, the album was inspired by a casual demonstration of a made-up sung language. a full-blown recording session captured this previously unheard quantity, the better to wake the world to its allure. the groovy gang broke out the oscillator and any other synth devices they had on hand (along with a kitchen cabinet full of impromptu percussives) to back up the operatic overtones of the mysterious eponymous chantueses via drones, riffs, chanting and, with reverb pots fully open, loads of ominous atmosphere throughout. despite the deep feeling of synchronous accord throughout this recording, it has proved to be something of a path not followed for the once and future ms. timmssally, that is, of eventual mekons fame.

this was the last the world heard of groovy — until now. their house of ideas wasn’t spent by any means—as of 1981, another session was planned under the general description “a man sprays a ford fiesta brown” but that never came to pass. a sea-change was signaled with the buzzcocks’ break-up, pete shelley’s subsequent solo career and energy going to other projects. however, even as these events were unfolding, recordings were made on a porta-studio at pete’s place that further realized the groovy direction. after the pubs closed, pete brought back a motley crew of usual suspects and special guests, broke out the synths, drums and what-have-yer attitude, resulting in a wealth of additional material that provided private listening pleasure for the groovy alumni over the years. culled from francis cookson tapes, these pieces make a fourth groovy installment entitled strange men in sheds with spanners that features a bent towards more disciplined rhythm pieces scored with a very purposeful array of synthetic sounds — truly the lost next new wave of groovy, finally crashing on our ready shores in 2011.

so here it all is, each of these lps in their own faithfully replicated jackets. these four aural tomes will be collected together for a cd box release in early 2012 —but really, what are you waiting for? it’s been over thirty years’ now—get groovy!

harmonizer
world complete

harmonizer, or as lovingly referred to as harmo around these parts is the vermont duo of toby aronson and veteran zone shredder greg davis, whose explorations into pastoral electronics have been well documented by kranky, carpark and his own autumn records. the duo’s previous effort, a self-titled cassette on aronson’s own stellar nna tapes label was the definitive “5th world” statement and solidified them with the koan of nu free electronic music shared by the likes of fellow melodic noisers caboladies and oneohtrix point never.

on world complete harmo boggles brains via the storied terrain that jon hassell once charted, adding sub bass, magic eye loops and some fusion gomf that is makes them decidedly more on the corner than aka-darbari-java. but who needs to be convinced about a band named after the most dramatic stompbox of the late 20th century. we don’t. band burns, this ep burns. sayonara.

selaroda is the work of san francisco resident, michael henning. "synaptic portals" gets deep into the cosmic cracks, looking for dark corners in which to find life. subterranean rhythms run head-on into dying city streets before hiding again where it's always night. looping soundscapes dissolve into major chord progressions and sequential wanderings. eventually, though, henning decides to reanimate the rabbit hole, pluck your piano strings, and sink in this synthetic quicksand. wretched beauty.

this is a guy to watch out for, after a friend directed us to his music we were immediately hooked, the schonberg reference was just icing on the cake. pierrot lunaire is making some of the most well articulated and elastic music in the u.s. underground right now. heavy sax chops shuffled in with found sound collage, ghostly vocal incantations, cheap keyboard acrobatics and a really proficient and expertly executed sense of digital editing.

with previous tapes on hooker vision and fadeaway, 'exercise in futility' is his strongest and most personal statement yet. two side long cuts that really showcase a deep sense of pacing, dynamics and overall musicianship. highly original and masterfully crafted, you wont hear anything like this all year.

sem-019 alvars orkester - profess c45

jan svensson (frak, borft records) and joachim nordwall (skull defekts, ideal recordings) have been recording and performing as alvars orkester since the late 80's and have amassed a modest discography in that time, always releasing choice cuts focused on quality, not quantity, in contrast to many of their contemporaries. jan and joachim's versatility has been inspirational around these parts, both of them moving around dance music templates, abstract and cold electronics, drone, noise, rock, ect, all things dear to us, with such ease, it's hard not to be impressed.

on 'profess' alvars orkester take their sound one step further and deliver an impressive song cycle of psychedelic industrial electronic music. throbbing analog synths and hi frequency bent electronics lay the base for this pyscho spiritual journey, filled with fear. the sense of urgency, claustrophobia and paranoia are prevalent throughout giving you moments of release, but only briefly as the derangement begins to take hold yet again. no one chord minor triad pad 'zones' here, not for the weak of heart - if you can stomach it, strap in and get fucked.

split
[nihil73] lp (2011)

alex barnett presents two new pieces delving further into synthesizer soundtrack territory. creating subtle and sinister soundscapes eerie enough to turn any situation into a potential death scene.

fielded (lindsay powell, also of ga'an / festival) follows up her brilliant terrageist lp here with a few sparkling gems almost too precious to behold. foundations of synthesizers are laid to waste by the pounding anthemic drum machine battle beats while powell's patented multi-layered and processed vocals command with definitive power.
