january 2011 release ; whoah (really didn’t see this one coming at all !!!) ...

contemporary, 180-gram vinyl pressing of the 1996hear sound art librarydisc (itself one of the most prized & hard-to-come-by items around) collecting a series of live & site-specific recordings from 1960/61 (!!!!) by takehisa kosugi, yasunao tone, chieko shiomi, mikio tojima, genichi tsuge, and shukuo mizuno’s group ongaku ...

widely considered the “first collective musical improvisation group,” group ongaku existed only for a blink before the various members went on to more high-profile projects ... but it’s within these captured voltages we can clearly hear the roots of the constituent members’ various transgressions over the decades to come, from kosugi’s violin & tape-manipulation stratagem, to tone’s sax-blasts & room-sound interference, to shiomi’s conceptual, art-world approach ...

... can’t stress how important & revelatory this music is in terms of 20th century experimental-sound enough ; the roots of the majority of the music whispered about around these parts can be traced directly back to these rosetta-stone-like tablets ... highly recommended !!!

ps. it’s very much worth noting that the ptb have gone to great lengths to make sure this music “works” on vinyl ; despite the often butterfly-winged notions (and extended side-lengths) the mastering / pressing-quality & general audio sense are top-notch throughout ... listen to the extended sound-sample for an untouched transcription of the tail-end of “automatism” ...
seer sound archive press release...

1] automatism (1960)
2] object (1960)

these are recordings of two live performances. recorded at mizuno's house on the same day. for both performances, they used such sound materials as musical instruments - a piano, a pedal organ, a cello, and an alto saxophone - as well as various everyday objects - an electric vacuum cleaner, a radio, an oil drum, dolls, and a set of dishes.

in "automatism," such decision as who employs what instruments / objects, or how one should articulate the sound, were made spontaneously according to how each performer played at each moment, or by chance at a particular point in time and space. the performers went back and forth between two separate rooms to articulate sounds randomly in various ways, using whatever objects inside the house that were at their disposal, any object that could possibly make sounds. during the course of the performance, one of the members touched the reel of the tape recorder, manually manipulating the tape speed. unlike "automatism," in "object" each performer listened to the sounds articulated by the other members and thus attempted to consciously create and amorphous and complex, yet unified sound space as a whole.

3] metaplasm 9-15 (1961)

this is a live recording of part 2 from group ongaku's first recital at sogetsu hall in tokyo. part 1 consisted of a collective improvisation using various musical instruments. the performance began as the bell rang for the opening of the show. through unconventional ways of manipulating and playing, noise-like sounds were created through the instruments. during the latter half of this performance, while playing the saxophone, both kosugi and tone walked off the stage, waded through the audience, and then disappeared. part 2 consisted of a performance that incorporated several reels of music tapes that had been prepared previous to the show, as well as radio and other various instruments.

group ongaku, founded mainly by students at tokyo national university of fine arts and music, was the first collective musical improvisation group. the group began their activities in 1958, and from the naming of the group in 1960 onward, continued until somewhere around 1962. they attempted to create acoustics corresponding to actual time and space by means of collective improvisation. although methodically different, the music that they pursued incidentally shared common directions with contemporaries such as john cage and others involved in the avant-garde artist collective of fluxus.

in november of 1958, shukuo mizuno and takehisa kosugi, undergraduates of the musicology program in the department of music at tokyo national university of fine arts and music, improvised sounds together, playing a cello and a violin. for them the european concept of music, in which compositions are predeterminately fixed sounds from written scores/notations that precede and regulate the performance, reduces the performance to a mere activity of representation, thereby losing the actuality of the acoustics. instead, they sought to explore different acoustics that gradually and constantly changed within actual time and space. through frequent performances every week they became convinced that improvisation, whereby creation and performance occur simultaneously, was the most effective approach for them to pursue.

between 1959 and 1960, chieko (mieko) shiomi, mikio tojima, genichi tsuge, from the musicology program, yumiko tanno, of the vocal music program, and yasunao tone, a graduate of the department of japanese literature at chiba university, joined the group and frequently attempted collective improvisations at various locations. they experimented with such different musical approaches and methods as developing a performance in which each player spontaneously responded to various non-musical sounds that were extracted from instruments and/or miscellaneous everyday objects, or performing completely random and automatic approaches that emphasized the incidental or indeterminate nature of sounds as traces of certain actions.

after their first recital in 1961, a conflict arose between members who interpreted collective as an approach for musical expression, and others who tried to directly connect everyday experiences with musical expressions in an attempt to transcend conventional musical concepts. subsequently, the characteristics of the group shifted from an organization for collective improvisation, to a flexible ensemble for individual musicians and artists, eventually leading members branching off into different directions of their own. among the group, kosugi, shiomi, and tone later joined fluxus.

for these artists, currently active in different musical fields, group ongaku marked the beginning of the careers.

winter drones - blood in the coffin
weird-60cd cd: edition of 500
ships december, 2010.

leon dufficy is primarily known as guitarist in the hippie-jam outfit, hush arbors but now, he steps into his own as the driving force behind winter drones. sounding like the perfect combination of fuzzed-out ambient drift, shoegaze swirl and propulsive pop sensibilities, winter drones have slowly gained attention in their native uk with a handful of obscure cd-r/cassette releases and compilation appearances. earlier this year, the band's debut album, blood in the coffin, came out as a limited-edition tape on uk micro-label, sexbeat records.

while legions of artists are mining the ambient style, dufficy stands out because of his ability to develop his soundscapes, infusing them with a touch of melody to impart a sense of emotion. songs like the lead-off track, "watch your eyes", set the mood perfectly while "bongs dream" shows dufficy's intuitive understanding that the perfectly weighted note/chord can add tremendous emotional resonance to an atmospheric piece.

but dufficy isn't some common nu-age denizen and the album really shines when the drums come in and the band rocks out. "winnie coopers bones" and "two long weeks part 2" find dufficy perfectly capable of crafting memorable songs that stick with the listener. the album's centerpiece, "stiff wizard", serves as a thesis statement for the entire album. over 10+ minutes, the track starts with flanged / fuzzed guitars swishing about and sounding like jet engines on a runway. as the piece builds towards take-off, a simple radar-like melody begins pinging and the song takes flight when the drums and driving guitar chords launch in -- a perfect microcosm of the whole record.

originally released as limited edition cassette on sexbeat records.
re-mastered by pete swanson and limited to 500.

ltd#168: loud & sadwhale fall vol. 1 c41

loud & sad is the duo of nathan mclaughlin (the person behind those great “echolocation” tapes) and joe houpert. “whale fall vol. 1 is heavy. not sludge/doom heavy, but in the sense that this music bears out a lot of emotion. subdued, minimal guitar drones that want to break to pieces under their own weight languish away while various electronics spit fire. it’s like swimming in black water unable to see anything around you but knowing that danger lurks at every turn. these are the kind of tonal memories i want to keep.

jooklo duothe warrior” seven inch single record

  • primitive power (4:23)

  • fire liberation (5:26)
november 2010 release ; now that’s what i’m talking about ... after being whispered about in the most hallowed of halls, the duo of virginia genta (whose recent rooftop duo set w/ chris corsano on 8mm was an out-and-out slayer) & david vanzan finally get a “mass-market” edition ...

hot on the heels of gigs w/ sabu toyozumi & sonny simmons ... and a week-long run at the barbican in london (where they performed musical accompaniment to merce cunningham’s final piece, alongside takehisa kosugi, john paul jones [!?], and sonic youth) comes this devastating blast, equal parts ayler-lineage “fire music” and borbetomagus-styled carpet-bombing that’s as powerfully psychedelic as it gets ...

comes in nice screen-printed sleeve (c/o eli keszler’s rel studio) on some bonded stock, with a b/w insert ... one of the singles of the year afa my own sensibilities are concerned ; highly recommended !!!

not since albert ayler stalked the hamnar of stockholm and reverberated his fire music off the walls of les tenements has there been an avant-garde jazz saxophonist who can all out wail like virginia genta can. don’t let her calm presence fool you. nor should david vanzan’s taller stature lead to believe this is not an equal opportunity free jazz freak-out. from when their poles first were converged by the cosmic force in 1999, italy’s (with finnish godparents) jooklo duo has been winning hearts and brains worldwide through jaw-dropping performances and a series of limited edition releases keeping at bay ravenous fans only long enough to get to the next gig. now, for their first u.s. release, northern-spy records launches its own assault on an as yet unsuspecting public with the 7, the warrior.

recorded october 11th, 2010, at troglosound home studio, it’s as compact and complex as a leather-bound book of esoterica ready to haul you off to the most hidden lands of universal energy.

to have walked into k dorm at the lefty college out in olympia, wa in 1995 was to experience an immediate assault on the senses. the slap of the stench of dancers writhing: hippies and scenesters, post-nirvana poster-childs and riot grrls. and there was a good chance that at the far end of the floor bowing under the weight of bodies, the sons of uterus and fire, old time relijun, were in charismatic glory.

their first recorded output, songbook vol. i, long out of print, is brought to revival by brooklyn’s newest indie imprint, northern-spy records. over the course of 7 albums, frontman arrington de dionyso (malaikat dan singa) and upright bassist aaron hartman (girls in trouble) have established an indie rock avant-garde with elements of the naive, the spiritual, international folk sounds and shake your ass funkiness. yet, nothing since has ever captured the rawness, the train wrecks and crocodile piss recorded by diana arens at dub narcotic back in those early days.

mastered for the first time, northern-spy presents this cd digipak release, a classic from its artist, arrington de dionyso. also, for you 7" aficionados, 4 little gems from the album -- sabertooth tiger, mirror, and the 4-track versions of baby dragon and lion tamer -- are a little crown for you to own on their own. the tent’s going up, the bibles are being passed around, it’ll all burn down before the end of the night. don’t miss out.

overview
it’s been a long journey for northern-spy artist colin langenus and tom hohmann, like floating stoned on the back of the turtle that carries the world. or primal scream therapy. that trip culminates with r.i.p., the group’s final release, and the first of brooklyn’s newest indie label. a swan song of a group at the top of its form, flowing with ease through psychedelia, stoner rock, prog, native american mythos, and even political disintegration.
r.i.p. was mixed by sludge-riff wunderkind, max hodes and features local nyc luminaries such as jeremy danneman (parade of one) and matt mottel (talibam!). graced by tom hohmann’s original cover art and pressed both on high quality vinyl and cd digipack, it will be a small treasure to carry forward for both the band’s fans and those just discovering this fascinating group as they embark on their next journeys.

our love will destroy the world "i hate even numbers" lp
(limited edition of 400)

release date: october 15, 2010

parallel universes mangle and mash into a superheated cloud of galactic debris and non-recyclable plastic. after a slew of genre-confounding 7" releases, our love will destroy the world unravels his own history of nearly everything in this, the mere third full length offering under his world destroying moniker. smearing the already dotty line between twinkle-toed rave music and excoriating drone cacophony, "i hate even numbers" weighs in like a three-legged gargantuan in a one-man morris dance. blessed with a deep conviction that 'nowhere' is somewhere definitely worth going to, crippled, hobbling, clunkbeats and bubblepulses contest every frequency to the death underscored (overscored?) by mega-electrified guitar tuning exercises, shattering a passage to a brand new india. everything louder than everything else, everything dissolving in the powerful acid of the sound next to it a frybrained avalanche of audio m&ms. profound, elevating, and mercilessly, relentlessly up!

our love will destroy the world is the new one-man project by new zealander campbell kneale after disbanding birchville cat motel. in the past kneale has released albums on ecstatic peace, corpus hermeticum, last visible dog, conspiracy and his own celebrate psi phenomena label. he has colllaborated with lee ranaldo, neil campbell, bruce russel, john olson (wolf eyes), yellow swans, has toured throughout japan, europe, america and australia and also records und the names black boned angel and ming.

"i hate even numbers" is the 2nd lp by this new project for the dekorder label (his 3rd altogether) after last year's monolithic "stillborn plague angels" album.

carl calm "dayglo port" lp
(limited edition of 300)

release date: october 15, 2010

carl calm ist the solo project by chicago citizen eric lanham of caboladies. "dayglo port" was recorded and mixed over two days in the tiny back bedroom of the fact house (a house chris and eric of caboladies used to live and host shows in lexington, ky) in the fall with the windows wide open and gear eliminating any floor space.

in contrast to caboladies' extensive jam-heavy explorations "dayglo port" favors a more introspective and rural atmosphere recalling the mood of seminal home electronica classics such as nuno canavarro's "plux quba", sunroof!'s "cloudz" or microstoria's "init ding".

eric lanham started playing music in 2006. his then roommate and longtime friend ben zoeller got him going and they started playing together. they then added chris bush and formed caboladies. they were enthralled with the experimental music they saw coming through lexington, ky (where they were all living) and decided to go for it. it started with pedals and feedback mangling and they eventually moved to samplers and synths. they did their first tour in 2007 with three legged race (hair police). chris and eric moved to chicago in 2009 and continued caboladies as a duo. been grooving ever since....

although they are considered one of the spearheading groups of a new age/synth revival scene in the usa along with emeralds and oneohtrix point never, caboladies have always been equally influenced by the likes of francois bayle, gil melle, bernard parmegiani, and other acousmatic composers, which clearly sets them apart from likeminded artists.

october 2010 release ; third installment in this set of turntable / cut-up pieces from inveterate musical innovator giuseppe ielasi, “made in early 2010” ...

this series has been putting me in a great place, translating the lexicon of ca. 2000 a.d. dance music (sub-bass pulse, clipped plunderphonia) into a more free-timed, upper-poly-rhythmic axis that’s far more transfixing than standard 4/floor fare ... visionary stuff.

giuseppe ielasi "(third) stunt" lp
(limited edition of 400)

release date: october 15, 2010

"(third) stunt" is the final part of a trilogy started in 2008 with the "stunt" ep on schoolmap. the series only source material is one turntable and a large selection of vinyl records; pulses and rhythms being the main organisational/compositional principles. ielasi focuses on the (audible) physical gesture of actually playing these records, a technique borrowing heavily from turntablism in hip-hop music, in contrast to the more anthropologic sampling techniques of plunderphonia. the hands-on process is important and remains audible throughout the project.

aesthetically, the stunt series has been a refreshing departure from the music ielasi has previously been identified with. there's an unexpected emphasis on rhythmic pulses, and the balance between repetition and variation as well as the overall compositional structure is very close to the structures usually found in modern dance music, making these tracks a very personal and unique sample- and texture-heavy interpretation of skeletal deep house and asymmetric cold funk.

like all previous volumes "(third) stunt" has been mastered and cut by rashad becker at dubplates & mastering, berlin and the cover photo has been shot by italian artist amedeo martegani.

giuseppe ielasi was born in 1974. he made his first marks as an improvising guitarist collaborating with the likes of thomas ankersmit, dean roberts and playing live with phill niblock, oren ambarchi, martin siewert, jerome noetinger and many others. from 2007 on, his main interest has been in site-specific solo performances, sometimes still using guitars as a primary sound source but integrating microphones and multi-channel speaker systems in order to create complex networks for sound diffusion in relationship to space. in 1998 he founded the "fringes" label (closed in 2005) and he co-founded schoolmap records in 2006.

his major solo works have been released on the 12k and häpna labels.

october 2010 release ; fine set of coastal thrum from starving weirdos / ensemble economique’s brian pyle & brother jon ... a bit smokier & perhaps more rustic than sw’s perennial energy-haze (even if stray moments do lift off into similar levels of clatter ; c.i.p. the sound-sample) ; the mix-buried twin drum-kit thrash throughout is a very nice touch, as are the musique concrète flourishes ...

rv paintings
samoa highway lp
the helen scarsdale agency : hms019

release date: october 26, 2010

rv paintings were born in california. humboldt county, to be exact. it is nearly impossible to imagine their origins being elsewhere since the brothers brian and jon pyle, who currently pilot rv paintings, constantly mine the metaphysical properties of their homeland through a heavy-lidded psychedelia. the redwood trees that majestically rise from the rugged terrain may have been one of the endemic objects that inspired rv paintings to "jam nature;" but humboldt county's other major cash crop -- marijuana -- cannot be far behind. as much as the pyle brothers channel a psychotropic animism through sound, their diaphanous drones and foggy ambient tangles spring from a schematic intelligence that belies any method acting of getting stoned and jamming in a room.

samoa highway is the second full album for rv paintings, following the nature jam transmissions of trinity rivers published by root strata in 2007 and a well-suited split lp with taiga remains from blackest rainbow. just as the debut payed homage to the rugged river system that cuts through forests and mountains of the region, samoa highway refers to the lengthy bridge that runs between two coastal communities in humboldt county, one of which houses a municipal airport. a swarm of drone guitars announces the opening of the record on "millions," with a shoegaze wash collapsing into rarified tone purity and bulging through a metallic buzz. field recordings of airplane take-off and firework explosions punctuate the undulating bleary smear of the pyle brothers' guitars. the result is one of levitation, even as rv paintings seem to be plugging their guitars and electronics directly into the moss, soil, and mycelia of the humboldt forest. echo-soaked flutes, maudlin stringsscabrous noises unearthed from the bottom of the pacific, and a cinematic arcs of guitar shimmer complete the beautiful and haunted miasma of samoa highway that falls somewhere between taj mahal travellers, organum, and the caretaker.

brian pyle may be best known as one of the founders of the starving weirdos and records his solo work as ensemble economique. samoa highway stands the first piece of vinyl published by helen scarsdale agency, pressed in an edition of 500 copies.

quicksails
"madison lakes" c28

the new project everyone should be most excited about. ben billington (tiger hatchery, druids of huge etc.) goes solo and lays down the most unique yet logical scattering of sounds i've heard in a while. analog synth, percussion, synth that sounds like percussion, percussion that sounds like synth (??????), blended into a fine powder and sprinkled onto an endless plain of 90's capri sun-style mercury slime.

the whole recording is sprinkled with tiny pinpricks and nuances of the aforementioned synth / percussion / ??????? that craft a completely fresh, insanely addictive sound-zone that sounds like every raindrop in the sky solidifying and turning into solid gold. the whole tape culminates with (easily) jam of the year, "realization", full of warm, "insightful" sounding synths and perfectly placed popol vuh-style cymbal crashes. i can't help but feel like this is the music for now, it just feels right. somebody needs to do an lp for this guy asap. weird full-color covers and painted labels in a "get the word out"

lil b rain in england 2lp

just who is lil b? the based god has scored so many youtube hits and crammed so many full length albums under his belt it can be hard for youngbloods to get a handle on what this rap savant is all about. is he the internet sensation with a hundred girls on his dick? or could he be the leading light of a new hip hop underground, one that has finally wrenched itself from the grubby backpacks and the cynicism of the mid 1990s? he's both, and with 'rain in england' the story gets even more mysterious and far more incomprehensible. those already up to speed on b's molasses-beats and stream-of-consciousness ('based') flow will think they got him pegged. internet hype and heavy tunes -- battle raps and copious interviews. he's the anti-drake - all ill-mannered, hungry and mercilessly lo-fidelity, and unafraid to make a beef over twitter.

'rain in england' shows an antithesis to this character, a tempered side to his add report card. part new-age ambient and part hip hop, the record is uncharacteristically fluid, with b's singular rhymes falling perfectly into a bed of syrupy electronics. b never falls into the trap of allowing himself to get too abstractedly wordy, yet we always retain the sense that he's not your typical street rapper. he's young, but there are stories to be told, and those stories are heard through the frosted glass of burned synthesizer melodies and disintegrating pads.

singular, disturbing and certain to polarize listeners, 'rain in england' is an album destined for a new breed of rap fans. lil b may just be the genre's brightest young hope; what exactly that genre is, only time will tell.

september 2010 release ; eagerly anticipated follow-up to pat dj yo-yo dietingmaher(rr)‘s “biest witches flexing” disc (as close to a “runaway hit” as we get around these parts) c/o the eerily prescient folk(s) over @ weird forest ...

if dre / yella et.al practiced surgery, this is closer to endoscopy ; tracking hip-hop’s micro-organisms with a tiny lens, pat’s broken everything down to its constituent fragments (think a jigsaw puzzle of the white house) & used the resultant debris-stream to build, ground-up, something entire new ... but then again that he’s even using hip hop as source material is kinda arbitrary (the effect’s the same when he’s using wagner ... or his cat 40) ; the “method” is what’s the most fascinating here, always maintaining a common thwack, keeping the bass below audible ranges & into straight “pressure(i.e. the kind of oomph you get from a detuned 5-string bass), keeping the vocals as abstracted from human communciation as conceivable, reducing meaning into syrup-addled envelope-follower gunk (the sound that gets me throughout is the ultra-resonant, almost self-oscillating sine-wave filter flutter that renders the deep, thug-addled chug into something almost gular - listen to the end of the sound-sample) ; the resultant malleable putty resembles something out of the nurse with wound canon (it’s certainly dark ; endlessly surreal) so much more than anything you’d expect from the radio ...

relating this music to plunderphonics or ... (whatever the hell it is that that girl talk guy does) is missing the point ; if you can even maintain by as soon as the second side that this music is in & of “hip hop” i’m impressed ; all traces of forward-momentum & any sort of stamina have been picked clean, leaving the remnant electronic gristle & dual-mono downstroke thump as the only evidence that this was once “music” ... this is to “hip hop & today’s hottest music” what moholy-nagy’s light-space-modulator was to a banker’s lamp back in 1930 ; an air-tight construct meant to automate & deviate from “function” & function solely on “process” ; as much a form-destroyer as there ever was ...

the last couple of minutes sound like sum of all 21st century popular music, transcribed to golden platter, sent into space on the voyager, only to be decoded 4k years from now with a different codec ... in many ways this is the apotheosis of the whole throwed & slowed culture, returning the funk back to dirt to the earth ... pat’s bested even himself w/ this one ; highly recommended !!!

expressway yo-yo dieting bubblethug 2xlp

pat maherr is probably best known for his explorations into fetishistic industrial ambience under the indignant senility moniker, but cassette hoarders will know that the oregon-based producer runs a syrup-laced sideline in half-speed rap. through a handful of tapes, maherr's dj screw-influenced sound has already bagged him something of a cult following, but 'bubblethug', his sophomore 'album proper', truly takes things further into the abyss, melting his signature pulse into a dark, viscous tar.

pitch shifting rap tracks might not be a new idea at this point (hell, it's practically mainstream practice in houston), but maherr takes this as just an entry point - slicing and stretching his chosen joints into a buzzing symphony of stutters, noise and chewed-up cassette tape. the resulting pieces are thick, heavy and pummelling - a demonic mid-point between punk and rap that mercifully avoids ska. the distant skeletons of the original songs are all but dissolved as the beats decompose noisily around them, dissolving choruses and crushing the life out of guest emcees.

links to lo-fi music and psychedelic music will no doubt be made, but 'bubblethug' is defiantly hip-hop from beginning to end. there's a beat, there's a rapper and with the help of maherr's spread of tape machines and filters he's taking the genre to places it rarely gets to go. it might only tentatively balance on the 'elements' ... but when rap's got no other place to go, all that's left is to travel deep down into the annals of unacceptability.

jazzkammer: peanuts

pica023. cd. released september 2010.

"peanuts" is a mixture of location recordings and percussion, and can be seen as a continuation of the music jazzkammer explored on the albums "timex" (2000) and "pancakes" (2002); carefully constructed transparent sound-surfaces. one track also features turntable surface crackle, which could bring the listener's thoughts back to the "turntable surface fireball" lp (2001). although "peanuts" is not a noise record, it could hardly be called ambient music. it might work well as background listening, but listen carefully and realize the many details in the music. strangely jazzkammer's 'quiet' albums have previously been described as their most difficult. hegre and marhaug are rather puzzled about this themselves, and hope that "peanuts" will make its listeners feeling enlightened and joyful.

the "peanuts" cover photographs are by spanish photographer valeria picerno.

jazkamer: matthew 28:17

pica022. cd. released august 2010.

on "matthew 28:17" jazkamer for the first time in the 2010 monthly series operates as its core duo of lasse marhaug and john hegre. this reduction does little to lighten the density of their sound, rather the opposite, because "matthew 28:17" is a thick haze of dopey fuzz-guitars and droning organ. for the longtime jazkamer fan this album bears similarities to the 2002 mini-album "the sound of music" – which often has been thought of as a highlight in the jazkamer oeuvre.

the themes of "matthew 28:17" are a mix of the subjects astronomi (both hegre and marhaug are keen space-enthusiasts) and religion (but neither are particularly avid churchgoers). this duality and conflict of science and spirituality is expressed as dionysian ecstasy through primitive psychedelic noise music. jazkamer offers no answers on these difficult matters, but hope that their listeners will join them on their dance around the campfire.

the cover artwork of "matthew 28:17" is by japanese visual artist yasutoshi yoshida, also known as recording artist government alpha.

all profits from the sales of "matthew 28:17" will be donated to nasa.

jazkamercover by hair stylistics” compact disc

july 2010 release ; july installment, a brusquenoisecore” variant with lasse, john, jørgen træen, and iver sandoy ...
pica disk press release...

jazkamer: cover by hair stylistics

pica021. cd. released july 2010.

"cover by hair stylstics" is the july edition of jazkamer's ongoing 2010 monthly compact disc series. this month's album finds hegre and marhaug joined by iver sandøy playing noisecore. noisecore is a crossover between grindcore and noise music. one could call it improvised grindcore, as its emphasis is on short bursts of blastbeat drumming backed by screaming vocals and heavily distorted guitar. often the music is improvised on the spot. early pioneers of noisecore were bands like gerogerigegege, 7 minutes of nausea and fear of god, and although the genre never flourished like grindcore, it nevertheless has lead a healthy underground life with bands like sissy spacek and october revolution.

jazkamer ventured into noisecore territory on 2008's "art breaker" album (smalltown superjazzz), which featured 59 songs in mere 17 minutes. many reviewers complained that 17 were even too much. despite this reaction "cover by hair stylstics" ups the ante with 129 songs in 20 minutes. because of the compact disc-format's limited index ability the songs are presented as one continious track. jazkamer also prefers the album to be experienced as a whole, rather than prominence given to individual songs.

for jazkamer's monthly 2010 series they have invited one different visual artist to contribute every month. the artwork of "cover by hair stylistics" is by the japanese actor, author and composer masaya nakahara. nakahara is know for him musical work with projects like hair stylistics, suicidal 10cc and violent onsen geisha. on the front cover nakarhara can be seen drawing the artwork used on the inside of the cover.

"cover by hair stylstics" was recorded during an excruciating two hours in duper studios in bergen. editing and mixing the material took even longer to complete and involved several coffee-breaks. pica disk hopes that jazkamer fans across the world will enjoy "cover by hair stylstics" for a long time.

first solo release for jeff host's new chemtrails project. following up amazing tapes on pizza night, tusco embassy, etc... and a recent move from the cleveland area to chicago with this mind-melting, mouth-watering new set of shorter tracks. jeff comes at it from an aerial and unique angle that never fails to leave me both amazed and just a little bit perplexed. seemingly endless flowing tones seep in like floating glitter, none of it sounds played, it just kind of appears. completely non-human sounding yet still somehow bright and emotive. really have no idea where this stuff comes from. simply incredible. i told jeff that side b of this tape is how i wish all music would sound. been wanting to do a host tape for a long long time, so proud and psyched to have a part in this.

digitalis limited press release...

ltd#153: dense reductionfictive agriculture” c42

travis bird and evan lindorff-ellery caught my attention straight away on their first trio of releases on the label they run together, notice recordings. “fictive agriculture” finds them spewing new organic sonar trails through hazy concrete forests. this is music that requires repeated listens to fully digest all the layers. things start off minimal and almost-melodic before bursting into a blown-out, churning mess. things go back & forth, covered in tape hiss and full of tonal warmth. it’s like unsuspectingly tuning into lost radio transmissions from the past half-century, sending out maydays from a distant planet.

the flipside opens things up a bit with some harmonic sand castles from the start. eventually the tide rolls in and smashes the whole thing into bits, but the cleansing is all well and good because bleak, dissonant electronic triumph emerges from the ashes. it coalesces into a feedback labyrinth, unsafe for those with delicate ears.

edition of 75, pro-dubbed.

iibiis rooges/t” long playing record

  • skirling birl
  • yellow breeze
  • coro-coro

  • dancing in the sun (fun has just begun)
may 2010 release ; excellent collaborative lp between neilastral social clubcampbell and the shadowy, domestic high wolf ...

while i’m a lifer for neil’s various transgressions, the recent high wolf tape on krayon was something a revelation, and here the two do go town via an assortment of pulse-oriented electronic fizzings, culminating in the epic, side-long patrick cowley megamix “dancing in the sun” ... exemplary work !!!

iibiis rooge
s/t
lp

iibiis rooge is the new superastral duo team bringing together the mysterious high wolf (not not fun records, winged sun) with the seminal talents of mr. neil campbell, better known these days as astral social club (fat cat, vhf, qbico, important, textile, bottrop-boy and countless other labels around the globe) and (ex-) member of vibracathedral orchestra, a-band, and other obscure/legendary outfits.

the new self-titled lp is the debut album of the band (don’t call it "project") combining modern psychedelic high wolf jams with the fucked up yet refined electronics and techno-infused beat choppery of the astral social club – the result being a lot more then you might have expected from the two, transcending their combined talents into a multicoloured supernova. the strength of the album is an unexpected pop sensibility and airiness, while still being tighter and more consolidated than their regular solo outfits. even the noisier elements are embedded in loose song structures with a carnivalesque air dominating the whole atmosphere.

while the duo’s solo outings are often camouflaging any melodies in oodles of electronic noises or lo-fi psych jams and hiss this is a fairly different affair with simple melodic textures always dominating the four tracks. the defibration of structures is still apparent but the music is constantly pulling itself together again. where the astral social club is sometimes willingly losing himself in electronic soundscapes and the high wolf’s short & sketchy songs are rarely fully formulated by nature, all the positive aspects of their respective works are combined and complemented in iibiis rooge.

a visible proof that online dating can be prosperous.

xelathe divine” long playing record

  • a corpse hangs in the house of the lord (25:35)

  • of the light and of the stars (25:38)
may 2010 release ; well-timed vinyl issue of john twells’ recent-ish digitalis tape, about which ::

... a lovely tape from johnxelatwells involving a side of grimy church bells, then an assortment of angelic voice-loop assemblages that mix his robert wyatt-esque voice with state-of-the-art electronic loop-processes ...

this one “worksmuch better on vinyl, with john’s boyish tenor (listen to the sound-sample) crescendo-ing into a wall of gained sonics that’s closer to a fennesz-ian grain-wave than the anglican roots it would appear to reference ... great stuff !!!

xela
the divine
lp

limited edition of 500 copies!

"the divine" marks the second phase in the trilogy proposed by john twells aka xela. crawling out of a castle dungeon in pursuit of its predecessor, "the illuminated", this lp finds itself trapped in an abandoned church somewhere in a damp southern wilderness. church bells chime and rattle through the record’s first piece, echoing and distorting through a fog of chattering voices and prayers. tape loops stumble over tape loops and the solemn, ecclesiastical drone slowly decomposes into thick, crackling noise. through the mists choirs sing, heralding the introduction of the second side of "the divine" which takes the human voice into cavernous and smudged, yet strangely alluring territories. there is almost a basinski-like charm to this work as the choirs effortlessly degrade into an unrecognisable mud of harmony and abrasiveness. this is music informed by a religious world; xela has edged from the scriptures of cults and secret societies to the spires of organisation and power. god is in the detail.
