ajilvsga massacre canyon aa007cs :: double-cassette duration: 168 minutes if you’ve been hanging around the tiny experimental voids that have been surfacing in north america over the past five-or-so years, there is some chance that you’ve brushed up against the rolling thunderhead called ajilvsga. the duo’s body of work is massive, and so even though it’s only a glimpse, massacre canyon is nonetheless a necessary document in the evolution of this musical icon. this soaring double-cassette collects tracks from ajilvsga’s past—some pieces more ephemeral than others, but everything worthy of a second (or tenth) glance. what these selections have in common is only a certain ability to succinctly (as much as one can, given the nature of the music, both in density and in length) define this oklahoman tag-team’s oeuvre: an animal darkness, tainted with imagery both accusatory and mournful. through their own multitude of sonic approaches, may you find ajilvsga’s essence living in the spaces of massacre canyon. alas, it’s not the end: side d contains 40 minutes of new music. onward!

aster - rel016 aster 'rel016' is the first release in the rel live series, which documents a show in boston from 2009. aster takes a different form in this set moving away from its distinct style of high pitch sustained overtone bends and song structure, pushing more towards a guttural blend of string scrapes and sustained tones in combination with an aggressive form of saxophone and drum textures. blending guitars, drums and horn with paul's unique green box set up, the music moves slowly and steadily through different areas ending with a sustained drum, string and saxophone section featuring an aggressive but oddly mellow texture and energy. 'rel016' is a one sided lp housed in a silk screened black cover with a metallic fold over paper with a unique laser die cut design. the inside has printed notes with the instrument details and information. the record is a one time limited pressing of 135 copies.

d011 :: alex barnett, push :: tape chicago-based alex barnett had remained under the radar until last year, when he unleashed four striking synth tapes known as the "section series" for labels catholic tapes, nihilist, pizza night and chronic boom soundsystem.  primarily focused on his work with noise band oakeater over the past few years, he has secretly been crafting his own solo vision.  taking hints from classic synth soundtrack visionaries, his music takes the form of brooding b-movie soundtrack miniatures, but without the use of sequencers (in his live performances you'll find him juggling multiple keyboards). push stays true to the dark synth roots of barnett's previous releases, utilizing duration and repetition to build powerful music from simple yet heavy progressions.  the side-length title track opens up with a pensive set of keyboard stabs, slowly transforming into an ultra-badass hijacker jam with a minimal techno undercurrent.  on side b, "temple"s creeping midnight brawler fuses strings with crumbling synth patches to give rise to an ominous stalker death stare, while "unseen forces" continues where the first side left off, another heavy cut for the sketchers that haunt the chicago nights. frkwys vol. 6: julianna barwick & ikue mori lpcat #: frkwys06 / wcr004 frkwys vol. 6 features four pieces composed and performed by artists julianna barwick and ikue mori as part of a month-long installation curated by rvng intl. at white columns gallery, new york, ny. when rvng accepted an invitation by white columns director matthew higgs to display in the all-purpose project space, we envisioned a venue to host a frkwys collaboration. the non-profit gallery's long-standing support for experimental music dates back to the noise fest, a nine day event curated by thurston moore in june of 1981 that featured many prominent downtown new york musicians. keeping the institution's regard for nyc avant music in mind, we looked to ikue mori, a member of no wave anti-stars dna and pioneer of drum machine and software improvisation, and julianna barwick, an artist recognized for the ethereal loop-based vocal compositions of her 2009 florine ep and 2011 the magic place lp, to forge the focal point on our opening night event. for the installation, a particle-board cubicle was custom constructed and placed at the center of the project space. the cubicle wall separated julianna and ikue to their respective seated work stations, while web cams captured the musicians at work / play and became interactive projections manipulated by video artist erik mika, illuminating this exercise in simulated engagement. each of julianna and ikue's improvised performances on october 29th, 2010, were cut live to vinyl via portable lathe. on the album's june 14th release date, the set of four unique lathe cuts and an elaborate art book will be made available for offers on igetrvng’s website. the book features creative direction by will work for good and photographs from the two events by aubrey mayer and jody rogac. julianna and ikue met a second time three weeks later at white columns, november 16th, 2010. this time the two musicians collaborated without an audience, cubicle, web cams, or lathe, but with past experience and spirit in place, an exercise in actual engagement. the four pieces of frkwys vol. 6 include two performances from the first collaboration and two performances from the latter collaboration. frkwys vol. 6 is a shared release with the sound of white columns. the lp is available in limited edition, packaged in thick black jackets with a two-color adhesive wrap. all lps come with a 24-page black & white zine; the book features creative direction by will work for good and photographs from the two events by aubrey mayer and jody rogac.

'white bike' was supposed to be on there, but both freek and me thought the somewhat joyeus and naive mood of the song would not entirely fit the cd, and we decided to release it here. actually there are three tracks on it, the original freek sung demo, an excerpt from the recording session (the moment when we think of the balloon) and the final version, sung by eva.
