akashic record (events: 1986-1990)
lp

release date 10.07.2012

outer space is a rapidly evolving sound entity headed by john elliott and joined by a constantly rotating cast of midwestern u.s. electronic figures. "akashic record" sees the project grow in many different directions from the self-titled arbor album created throughout 2008 and 2009 while retaining similar aesthetics of synthesizer experimentation and it's esoteric relations.

recorded over the course of a year with close engineering assistance and compositional contributions from andrew veres in home and studio situations, a fresh array of fidelities and ideas previously unexplored have been mined and documented. new contributions from the elusive philip whiteside (of wavehead) and drew mcdowall (past coil / current mirror eye member) expand, stretch and challenge previous working methods. in the tradition of many other past releases, jeff hatfield (of cleveland, ohio's fragments) makes his essential appearance as well. "akashic record" sees the project move on from the stripped down, primitive nature of the old into a more urgent, fractured and aggressive set of reality based compositions.

the work was created based on the events of others in mind; those doomed to circumstances beyond predictability or imagination.

parthenon
lp

release date 12.06.2012

spectrum spools is pleased to release the debut album by veteran musician toko yasuda's plvs vltra project.

toko has been working for years already in established pop acts such as enon, blonde redhead and now touring with st. vincent handling synthesizer duties for live events. in all her years of songcraft there have been sparse, if any solo output, until now.

"and now for something different..." as we say here at the spectrum spools headquarters.

"parthenon" is a sugar-sweet album of catchy pop songs, crafted with expert precision and outstanding composition logic. everything is locked in in a way that seems at once like clockwork, and also somehow very free. as if alice coltrane's "universal consciousness" was reimagined and sent into the future to be reimagined as an electronic pop record. most of the album's focus lies on the glowing, ethereal voice that is unmistakably exclusive to yasuda. swirling, fine tuned electronic washes and collaged clouds of ambiance swirl and hover around these mega catchy tunes giving them a fantastic depth which commands attention and repeat visits. yasuda's songcraft here is in peak form as well, with ultra catchy hooks and addictive melodies that have been dialed in to perfection over the many years of making music. one of the most brilliant facets of "parthenon" is the anti-genre omniverse vibe, where all borders and boundries set to confine music to a general one word descriptor are shattered. "pop" is a word abused to catch-all, and like any great, well-thought album, "parthenon" refuses to be pinned down. here is your summer jam! enjoy!

lp

release date 29.05.2012

alexander moskos is a seasoned canadian avant-garde musician active in projects such as alterity problem with joel taylor and the legendary thames, who had an incredible 7" release on american tapes in late 2011. drainolith, his solo guise, has been active since the mid noughties but has remained relatively under the radar with mysterious private press cassette and cd-r releases. in 2009 moskos picked up a heavy u.s. tour regiment and caught the attention of u.s. underground heads with impressive live sets. it was around this time that moskos began to dial in songs for his debut "fighting!" lp, which we are eager to present.

it's important to keep listeners on their toes and spectrum spools is fully psyched to hit you with an album of delusional blues - littered with fractured synth, feedback and seriously cryptic personal content. one of our first releases with strong lyrical focus, alex knocks it out of the park with his synthetic voice resonating like a wasted robert ashley on ambien. the tracks rage with a one man "twin infinitives" style, with guitar riffs so fucked that they make neil haggerty sound like les paul. damaged, random, syn-drum triggers and ms-10 crackling go fully ballistic over dark and personal narratives. despite the chaotic nature of the music, there is a defined and cohesive song structure to each track which makes everything more confusing but also highly enjoyable to listen to.

if you miss bands like shadow ring and royal trux, but wonder where the logical next step would be in their absence: step in this direction - we promise you'll be pleased.

release date 15.05.2012

in 2010 rachel evans released "seeping through the veil of the unconscious", an expansive, magic trick of a cassette which captivated an unsuspecting american cassette underground and made dedicated fans instantly. digitalis released fine editions of the "seeping..." as well as the acclaimed follow-up "luminaries and synastries" on lp which packed an equally potent punch. since then much anticipation has been created from her work with husband grant evans, including a split lp on aguirre records in late 2011 and various releases as duo quiet evenings

evans has since been hard at work on an expansive, definitive 2xlp project, carefully arranging sounds to create immense, alchemical side-long tracks which push the boundaries of the project into new territory. these incredible new highs are documented in a clear, spacious fidelity where cerebral sounds gently flow and wash through the stereo field creating a beautiful deep listening situation. big changes in sound and scope are evident; a shift from the murky, mysterious haze of the older recordings into a highly addictive concentrate of airy tones and gem-like glow, each track forming a universal sky-map . there is, however, no loss of mystique. one of evans most charming elements is her ability to create a divine magnetism, and to capture this very magic unfiltered, raw and uncomprimised. very few have the capability to create this powerful energy and make is as accessible as evans does.

this full-length definitive album is a high water mark in the motion sickness of time travel discography. an album masterfully crafted with ambition, crystal clear vision and dedicated focus. mastered for vinyl by lawrence english and cut for vinyl at dubplates and mastering.

animal husbandry
lp

"animal husbandry" is the result of absolute, genuine obsession: a devotional masterwork with song craft, exquisite production and aesthetics regarding the ultra-damaged times we live in all in perfect harmony. burrowed away in private studio sessions over the course of a year, human teenager have emerged with a profound and colorful masterpiece.

like chrome before them, the effects of a carbon copy community of lemming rock groups were avoided and ignored, and the vision of creating a pure, singular work was achieved. rarely does an album with complex structure and abstract tendencies sound so organically catchy as this. the duo spawn a brand new sound that ranges somewhere between ilitch's "10 suicides" to the work of the cleaners from venus. to be clear, however, it would be impossible to plaster genre descriptors onto an album with such enormous scope. terms like "synth-pop", "rock and roll", "punk", et cetera, can all be applied on a surface level, but at the end of the day it's none of and all of these things at the same time, more or less. few projects are able to create and exist in a personal universe that hits the nail right on the head the way "animal husbandry" does. from "fourth reich," the albums opening cut, it's very apparent that human teenager have created an album that will not be able to stop listening to with its wildly morphing vocals, strafing synthesizer arrangements, and prismatic guitar detail.

police, the new world order, youtube, new york; it's all a drag, and human teenager captures the horrors of everyday life in "the future" and holds them hostage. spectrum spools is very pleased to present you with an instant classic.

cold nose
lp

release date 20.03.2012

franco falsini is an italian musician and producer perhaps best known for his work with his space/prog rock group sensations' fix, who released seminal albums in the 1970’s. his music was primarily crafted with impressive guitar technique (proven to be way ahead of his time), various synthesizers, and unorthodox recording methods to churn out beautiful experimental psychedelic sound.

cold nose” was his debut solo outing, originally released on polydor in 1975 as a soundtrack to a film that has never been widely released and only seen by very few people. falsini applied many experimental methods to his recording process, including a mechanism borrowed from the bio-electronic meditation society, which would monitor his brain activity in the studio. only when his brain would produce alpha / theta waves would he begin to write and commit his music to tape. composed in three suites of spiraling and kaleidoscopic proto-ambient, psychedelic rock, falsini had created a masterpiece that today stands as one of the all-time treasures of the italian progressive music scene of the 1970’'s. throughout the recording we are treated to gentle washes of ems and minimoog synthesizers laced with floating guitar line melodies that break out into sky-high guitar leads. “cold nose” is a rare and gorgeous organic creation, glowing with colorful pulses and morphing algorithms.

spectrum spools is pleased to present the first pressing of the album in over 30 years, remastered by falsini to his specifications from the original tapes and cut to vinyl at dubplates and mastering, berlin.

march 2012 release ; ... very pleased to finally be able to present you all with a round, black object with derekhead bogglegedalecia’s music on it (he’s long overdue) ...

... rising from the ashes of the latter-day bay-area freaknik scene (best typified by caroliner’s grux’s regular “godwaffle noise pancakes” series ... in which, yes, audiences are treated both to a noise concert ... and waffles) derek has, over the last half-decade, somehow managed to defy the odds & shed his concept from any / all wackyconnotations, chipping & preening away at the raw, sometimes unfocused ice-block of his early energy-relatable concepts, growing them into an elegant, crystal swan of live, in-situ ems synthi, often de-tuned barrel-house piano, tape and/or “concrètecombination-ings ...

... right off the bat, the fidelity & spec on display here (even vs. the very recent spate of “automatic” -leaning issues on his own greedmink tape-imprint) is top-notch, trading in the hazy, ferrite-warped ranges for a stab at a transparent clarity that greatly benefits the music ; a catch-all of the exactunheralded” approaches to early electronic sound championed by creel pone et.al & an almost dada / surrealism-leaning sense of décollage ...

lp

release date 20.03.2012

we are beyond excited to present you with the highly anticipated vinyl debut of the head boggle project. the world has been waiting for this day to come, and finally a full-length long player has arrived.

recorded at his apartment studio, "headboggle" is the manifestation of derek gedalecia's acoustic / electronic research utilizing the "kitchen sink" in every sense of the idiom: moogs, harmonica, banjo, harpsichord, irish harp, ems synthi, violin, drums, clavinet, serge modular, field recordings and more! what makes "headboggle" so special is the careful arrangement of sound, with painstaking attention to composition and sound direction. disorienting magic is a key trait of the head boggle sound, one which captivates and commands repeated inspection. like any great focused album effort, there is a narrative arc - from the introductory "flourescent star" with it's dizzying, fractured crackle and bizarre piano float to the tension packed, information-overloaded squabble and squawks of the "dream diary" and "europa astrobiology lander" tracks. "headboggle" is a dedicated and devotional effort - one with precision and prodigious vision.

equal parts françois bayle and tod dockstader in the best possible way, it's still hard to pin such a multifaceted talent to any kind of descriptor. derek has been honing his sound for years with loads of releases on almost every essential tape and cd-r label out there. here we have his finest set of compositions yet in hi-fidelity, tight and tediously packed, forming his most concise release to date. the head boggle debut has raised the bar for classical electronic composition with the greats, a feat of rare occurrence.

lp

here at spectrum spools, one of the many missions is to make sure great, under-documented, and limited offerings get a chance to see a wider release. no ufo's debut cassette,"soft coast" (2010, nice up int'l), is surely no exception. it was said about the swell maps "a trip to marineville" that the album had been obviously crafted by true music lovers who were record collectors. it seems that konrad jandavs' debut as no ufo's was calculated and carefully pieced together to spawn a whole new universe from the omniverse of collective musics, a feat which many attempt but few succeed. lazy comparisons to neu! and other such kraut-oriented material have bubbled up here and there, but jandavs' vision, as with any great recording artist, is all his own; a new perspective from looking at musics past and present.

"soft coast" began jandavs' short, yet potent string of collaged "cosmic trash" which gripped the underground tape scene. since he's just seen the drop of his new "mind controls the flood" ep on public information and has future releases planned, it seems wrong to let this one slip thru the cracks any longer. a killer debut out of the blue, more than deserving of wider recognition, now available on vinyl.

flux
2lp

release date 14.02.2012

"flux" is the 1981 debut solo outing of robert turman, an american multi-instrumentalist and avant-garde composer. until recently, turman was perhaps best known for his contributions to the ballistic non project with boyd rice, as well as other obscured u.s. industrial acts such as z.o. voider.

in the summer of 1981 turman decided he would take a drastic turn from the noisy / electronic / industrial work of his compatriots, and began work on what is now the classic "flux" cassette. "flux" was originally self-released in extremely limited numbers. weary of the noisescapes of old, he set out to create long-form minimalism utilizing kalimba, piano, "mini-pops jr." drum machine, and tape loops to create a complex bed of interweaving micro-stasis. the results of these new experiments were as beautiful as they were perplexing.

a curious dusty fidelity carries these classic tracks across four sides of vinyl, including all of the original "flux" content. these compositions glow with a sprawling, slow motion haze that's light years ahead of its time. "flux" reveals wide spectrums of sound from melancholic kalimba and percussion patterns to slowed down, syrupy exotica. turman had complex ideas in his mind yet only the simple technologies of the day were at hand. hear the click of the stopping and starting tascam 3340 open-reel tape machine as one hand presses the "record" and "play" buttons and the other plays piano phrases. while there are similarities in style to classical minimalism, turman's sound and vision is his own and is exclusive to his limited discography.

released in a limited edition 2xlp set, lovingly remastered and cut by rashad becker at dubplates and mastering from the original c-60 cassette master.

february 2012 release ; ... first reissue project from spectrum spools, finally doing justice to tape-loop composer robert turman’s debut release, originally “issued” in 1981 in a privatelimited edition cassette in 7box(then, again a year later in a “remixed and extended” form with the cover imagery used here) ...

... those only familiar with turman’s latter-day tape-loop blow-outs (or chrome-esque chug) might be surprised to hear these sublime, extremely minimal repetitive motion studies, scored for kalimba, grand piano, and what sound like gamelan samples, all run through turman’s tape-loop system(s ; i love the bit right at the beginning where he callously slams one into action ... then lets the resultant waves of blissed out chiming stay their course for the entire side ... listen to the sound-sample for that bit) ... this is far closer to the “pinaspec than anything with suchindustrialassociations ; killer reissue !!!

flux
cd

"flux" reveals wide spectrums of sound from melancholic kalimba and percussion patterns to slowed down, syrupy exotica. turman had complex ideas in his mind yet only the simple technologies of the day were at hand. hear the click of the stopping and starting tascam 3340 open-reel tape machine as one hand presses the "record" and "play" buttons and the other plays piano phrases. while there are similarities in style to classical minimalism, turman's sound and vision is his own and is exclusive to his limited discography.

lovingly remastered and cut by rashad becker at dubplates and mastering from the original c-60 cassette master.

original cassette artwork and scans provided by aaron dilloway.

hive mindelemental disgrace” long playing record

  • elemental disgrace i (15:24)

  • elemental disgrace ii (16:08)
october 2011 release ; ... crushing, indelible music from greh holger, his first release in many, many years after burning his bridges & re-locating to los angeles a few years back ...

... all that aside, john’s assertions (below) are accurate ; without greh’s stream of releases from 2003 on essentially re-framing the synthesizer as the go-to sound-producing box in the noise world, we wouldn’t have any of the “synth-renaissance” stuff from the last odd-decade, including emeralds, et.al ...

... needless to say, but greh’s in fine form here ; his meticulously carved granite walls of ms-20 gristle are reproduced in arguably the most hi-fi fashion ever, thanks to the (i know, i know, redunant to even bring it up) expert-level d&m cut (this really does sound like a million bucks ; listen to the sound-sample) ...

elemental disgrace
lp

release date 18.10.2011

elemental disgrace” is an album that needs to happen now. finally, the next phase has arrived - a stunning double side-long record of some of the u.s. best underground synthesizer music we have heard here at the spectrum spools headquarters.

whatever rise to the synthesizer came later on in the 00's is hardly of any concern to greh holger and his hive mind project. having released private press cassettes of solo synth works as far back as 2002, hive mind exists as enigmatic in world of new-jack synthheads and the tidal wave of “neo kosmische” that goes with it by flying far under it’s radar.

the silence is now broken and here we are treated to some of the most unique sounds spectrum spools has yet presented. no blisscapes to be found here. no soaring latched arpeggios, no cosmic vistas. not a single melody. this is two sides of ancestral ruin in its clearest and most focused presentation. the brutality of the earth and the harsh reality of all that it holds. unknowable sounds - that of the dawn of the earth, or perhaps the sound of its demise. a toxic swamp of chemicals and mutated organisms left behind long after man has wiped himself away for good. field recordings from the end of the world.

while others are racing for the stars, hive mind’s tectonic plate shifting and brutal rumble will give you a brand new way to look at modern synthesizer composition. with a focus on textural sounds and shifting frequency registers, this album gives the listener the a full range of listening possibilities with infinite replay value.

it’s worth noting that spectrum spools as a label would not exist without hive mind. an inspiration and a pioneer in the modern u.s. synthesizer circuit, it’s with pleasure and honor to release “elemental disgrace” into the world.

october 2011 release ; daren (ho) ‘s been on a tear over the past few months since relocating to brooklyn from iowa ... this set was available for a blip as a root strata tape, but works wonderfully here on vinyl as a series of short, “library” -style electronic miniatures that utilize synths, yes, but also some light piano drippings & tonnes of rhythmic white-noise punctuations that nestle things somewhere between “program music” & a kind of industrial collage ... super ace & one of the best things he’s done ...

june 2011 release ; ... at long last, a proper (readily available !!! for more than a few days!!!) album from jean logarin’s temporal marauder ...

working here with associates hans schule, max tanguy, and llissa zuckovich, logarin’s bisection of contemporary & “klassischepsychedelic electronic music tropes goes way beyond mere emulation / re-creation, yielding a truly new hybrid of both that leans heavily on latter-day gear / tech / solutions while doing a bang-up job of channeling the built-up splendor of the best 70’s euro-library gold (i’m thinking cecil leuter’s “pop electronique”, but also the boneschia new sensation in sound” series, & the greater work of roger roger, nino nardini, zanagoria, h. tical, and the like) ... all while retaining the “half-groovy, half-bonkers synth freakoutspec of said ...

words cannot express just how ... perfect this whole record is, especially given current trends in otherwise mono-influenced, backwards-looking retro electronic music ; consider this the high bar raised for other intrepid travelers to aspire to ... comes in a glorious tech-pastiche sleeve c/o the incomparable jeremyghost icekannapell that’s perfectly apropos of the organized chaos within ; highly recommended !!!

temporal marauder makes you feel
lp

if jean logarin did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him. never mind your outsider composers; never mind your library music. never mind your merely unreleased records. jean logarin's music, like some recent unearthings by belgium's ultra eczema label, exists at a remove from publicity so complete that it was nearly not among us, and has never been before. like any obscurity, its immediate appeal might be that this music could count as a more genuine artifact of its time than any more commercial product, by virtue in part of its being outside of history. jean logarin's music is definitely outside of history, but it is no artifact.

it is so deeply consonant with the best contemporary electronic music that it is hard to believe it isn't brand new. but the biographical details, however elusive of our usual channels of verification, speak for themselves: logarin studied under andrew rudin during the early 70's; his interest in electronic music further developed while working as a studio assistant for engineer max tanguy, an associate of famed krautrock producer, conny plank. through tanguy, logarin met percussionist hans schule, an eccentric whose shady wealth bankrolled a series of recording sessions at tanguy's studio. together with logarin's then-girlfriend, llissa zuckovich, tanguy, schule and logarin proceeded to compose in the studio several hoursworth of finished pieces whose original purpose and intention have only become cloudier with time. there was no serious attempt made to release it, and only vague talk of attempting to sell it for commercial usage.

the music on makes you feel is, then, from a historical perspective, purely a vanity project. a vanity project within a vanity project, even: none of the pieces were given titles by logarin, and the name temporal marauders does not predate this release. the album was compiled, its presentation determined, by its own first fan. and here is where the story strains credulity, because it requires believing that jean logarin one day met, by chance, accordionist and composer guerino raglani, who even then was uncle to a young joseph raglani, today trafficking in romantic, kraut-tinged electronics under his own name.

two years ago, the elder raglani passed onto his nephew a set of dat transfers of his old tape reels, among which were (what have proven to be the only known) copies of logarin's studio recordings. the younger raglani, so the story goes, flipped out--became "nearly scared," in his own words--and demanded to know more. his uncle shed what light he could on how he came into possession of the tapes (a funny story in itself), but it took an extensive search to find any accessible trail to logarin. while jean and the rest of the erstwhile group were pleasant enough when located, and happy to lend their support to the belated discovery of their work, each was mostly surprised anyone would want to go to the trouble; particularly logarin, who declined the invitation to be involved in the project beyond its approval, and encouraged joseph to come up with the album's names and titles himself.

so, the project became raglani's, and it bears the impression of his own aesthetic stamp, drawing from a range of references he and logarin discovered they had in common. and yet: a "vanity project within a vanity project"? what else is music to begin with? how can it be said to begin with any purpose, and whose is it to name? in any case, this is close to the limit of what can be said about makes you feel. one may search for further information about jean logarin beyond these and a few other bare facts, but only in vain; he does not wish to be known. but to anyone who supposes that music this enjoyable and exciting, however buried, would've already been found by now if it actually existed, i would suggest that it has arrived at just the right time to be heard. and to those who will inevitably question if logarin himself is real, the only straight answer is that we have his music. how could he not be real?

- michael ferrer.

for the last few years, chris madak has been on a tangled and cryptic path toward the full realization of his bee mask alterego. now, for the first time there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel - a chance for old plans to come to fruition and for new ideas to blossom into the unknown. "elegy for beach friday" is a personal selection of highlights from a slew of limited cassette and cdr editions recorded between 2003 and 2010, re-imagined, reedited, and remastered, offering both a cross-section for the uninitiated and a fresh enigma for the already-enchanted.

the original documents will age on the shelves of those fortunate enough to have been in the know, and for the rest of the world, we now have this double lp retrospective of chris' favorite time-stopping microcosmic suites, woven together over four instantly classic sides of wax. here, the full range of bee mask's sonic palette has been carefully compressed into a dazzling and infinitely dense time capsule of mind-altering martian sound fields and psychedelic dimension bending, bridging the worlds of nikola tesla and lamonte young and giving us the ideal soundtrack for our collective walk down a dirt road into the gaseous cloud of our final days.

a suite consisting of 7 complex, layered compositions shows new progression in composition and melody from the duo. from the lightning fast, bittersweet crescendo of "twin lanes" to the dramatic chord progressions of "i can still hear your voice", "house" is a certain expansion in execution and construction. tracks like "p.m." put a new take on the long-form mist style with cryptic alien vocoder and humid pad sounds, while "mist house" and "dead occasion" reveal new, complex territories that will most certainly please fans of the previous mist recordings.

... first title i’ve heard from this new aggregate of bright’s mark dwinell, sophie lam, and george bennett ... a synthesizer / drum-machine trio that, in addition to running the schoolhouse venue, works a decidedly forwards-backwards-looking combination of sounds that harken to the berlin school’s natural progression into the early-mid-80’s (the gradual, real-time linn-drum voice-reveal is a glorious thing) ...

... the transition from tape to a d&m cut, euro-pressed lp really shows how meticulously these short, spry numbers were executed & captured ... whereas i was merely impressed by this music on tape, i’m floored by the deep, penetrating filtrations & skittery drum-machine work here, raising this up to the zenith-level of contemporary practitioners of the ages-old clock / trigger-sync approach to real-time live electronic music ...

forma (mark dwinell, sophie lam, & george bennett) emerged on the nyc minimal synth scene in 2010 with a singular vision of cosmic krautrock for a new age.

on their eponymous debut lp, the brooklyn-based electronics trio merges the melodic flow and primitive rhythms of their motorik predecessors with the hypnotic drones of minimalism, creating an intricate work both addicting and rewarding with repeat listens. like many of the lp's eleven tracks, the churning and relentless forma237b draws its energy from a precarious equilibrium between structural rigidity and free improvisation, a dynamic at the heart of forma’s universe.

with lush, distant soundscapes as interludes between these peaks, forma’s inaugural full-length is a harmonious and expansive expression of the enduring power of kosmische musik.

march 2011 release ; debut release on this new label, run by emeralds’ / outer space’s john elliott & manufactured / distributed under the editions mego umbrella ...

... feel like i was just talking about matt mullane the other day [ed. :: he was !!! his vdsq lp of solo acoustic guitar music just dropped last week ... (who i am i kidding, i don’t have an editor, that was a lie)] ; here he switches gears entirely, dropping an endlessly hi-fi assemblage of melodic electronic patternage that’s both texturally rich and quite satisfying on a personal / emotional level ...

it’s worth noting that the general audio spec here (ultra high-end d&m cut on a thick, euro-pressed lp slab ; so loud i had to actually switch our recording apparatus from line to mic level to grab the sound-sample to your left, no joke !!!) & presentation (high-gloss lp sleeve, with the lp tucked in a very classy polylined black paper sleeve) are of the highest caliber, well in range of justifying the price-tag (i.e. john has fought for and won some considerable production values from the normally tight-fisted peterpitarehberg ... just joshing peter, i know the money flows like fine alsatian spring water from your wallet) ... let’s hope this series keeps going for a while, digging deep into the domestic tape-scene & issuing choice sides in a more apropos format ...

sp 001 / fabric
a sort of radiance lp

cut by rashad becker at dubplates & mastering, berlin, january 2011.

matthew mullane is a chicago multi-instrumentalist performing under the guise of fabric.

here we have a fine suite of compositions which embark on a voyage through darkness of night and the brightness of day. washed out dark colors and static pulses sweep across your stereo painting a portrait of intense yearning and determination. recorded over the course of a year, matthew has constructed a multi dimensional organism of sound that has perplexing depth and astounding detail.

the album reveals new shapes and sizes with repeat listens and is truly a work which you can submerge yourself in to get lost. "leaving the house" is an energetic workout with it's dense, ultraviolet fog and stream-like melodies.

then there's the vignettes such as "orange and red" or "containers", that branch out into unfamiliar territory in their own special ways synthesizing a journey far from home.

so far, fabric releases have appeared in very small editions including a split with sparkling wide pressure and a practically non-existent cassette on fairchild tapes. spectrum spools is proud to kick off the label by presenting the debut fabric album.

pete swansonpro style” long playing record

  • pro style (6:49)
  • pro style (vip) (9:06)

  • do you like students? (11:47)
october 2012 release ; ... first in a series of 12” releases for type showcasing pete swanson’s pummeling, brutal techno-relatable (as in ... related to techno ... but just about damn near unusable in a “dancefloor context” given the levels of overload & flittering, asynchronous elements) constructs - the very same he’s been unleashing on audiences for the past year ...

... as pete narrows in on his own personal, ultra-specialized production spec (which meets the bombast of his prior solo productions w/ the “orchestral” layerings of prime ys, halfway) i can only see this series getting better & better ...

pro style” by pete swanson

more frazzled technoid variations from ex-yellow swan pete swanson.

since upsetting the techno multiverse with man with potential, ex-yellow swan pete swanson has tirelessly continued his exploration of the form, quickly breaking it down and molding it in his image. pro style is the result of those experiments, and finds swanson at his most explosive, with his archetypal searing synthesizer blasts directed over warehouse kicks worthy of the downwards catalog. this is possibly swanson's most technoid investigation to date, but any "mainstream" form is peppered with more than enough failure to put a smile on the faces of unconvinced yellow swans fans. pro style is far from berlin's precise minimalism, instead taking a raw, hands-on direction that we haven't heard in the genre for many years. whether you're in the club or in the basement, swanson's pounding kicks and (surprisingly) booming basses should keep the apocalypse at bay, for now at least.

cut at dubplates & mastering, berlin.

the world is a house on fire” by zelienople

a unique album of haunted, shimmering beauty from chicago drone survivors zelienople

veterans of the sprawling chicago music scene, zelienople have carved out a unique sound over their enviable slew of releases. ‘the world is a house on fire’ is the latest chapter in the band’s story, and frames their music more succinctly than ever before. mike weis (percussion), matt christensen (vocals, guitar) and brian harding (bass, saxophone) managed to perfect brooding, melancholy doom pop on their last full length ‘give it up’, and this latest lp finds the band in a lighter mood.

the trio have utilized dream pop tropes before, but in the first bars of opener ‘the southern’ there is no doubt that the haunted americana of the bands previous has been swathed in a haze of drifting synthesizer tones and echoing organ drones (played by occasional member donn ha). the simplistic beauty of slowdive and early verve is distilled to a vapour as it drifts into christensen’s characteristic vocals and weis’s soft, subtle percussion. this isn’t pop music, but the skeletons of pop are just about audible, enshrined in something far more beautiful and much more delicate.

the world is a house on fire’ is a blissful and utterly enveloping addition to the zelienople canon, and while it might be more subtle than their previous records, it stays with you more than you might expect. haunting doesn’t even begin to describe it…

808s & dark grapes ii” by main attrakionz

oakland rap duo main attrakionz most defining statement to date.

the internet can be blamed for many things, and while the current consensus seems to be that it is single handedly responsible for the destruction of the music scene, it’s impossible to deny the influence it has had on contemporary rap music. previously held hostage by industry moneymen, file sharing and social networking has democratized the genre and allowed people to hear what’s really going on in the minds of young producers and rappers. main attrakionz are one such cottage industry made up of rapper/producer squadda bambino and rapper mondrem.a.n., and in only a couple of years the oakland-based duo have amassed an enviable cache of heavy hitting records. surprisingly none of these highly regarded mixtapes have yet made it to the physical realm, so it is our pleasure to issue the band’s defining ‘808s & dark grapes ii’ on wax for the first time.

808s…’ shows mondre and squadda in exemplary form, spitting home truths and fractured hood memories over untouchable productions from their unmatched arsenal of collaborators. clams casino hardly needs an introduction at this point, but he is joined by japanophile sf duo friendzone, marlee b, keyboard kid and many more to create a veritable roadmap of the current scene. the sound might have been awkwardly labeled ‘cloud rap’, and sure it sounds pretty dreamy, but there’s more to main attrakionz than just a subgenre. this is fathoms-deep, genre-bending rap music found outside of the traditional boundaries, and its protagonists are two of the most compelling voices in the scene. listen hard, and listen good, this won’t be the last time you hear from main attrakionz.

november 2011 release ; ... quite lovely set of downtrodden drone music from new mexico’s william fowler collins that in no way even closely relates to black metal (someone had to say it) ...

that said, there’s a fair bit to latch on to within these grooves, from the brooding pitch-scale writing to the slightly grisly low-end feedback figures ... that this deviates greatly from the whole sparkling-sunshine vector of contemporary frozen sound makes it stand out (in my book at least ; it’s nice to hear so many degradation-oriented processes applied simultaneously to such ecclesiastic material, lends a certain earthen, dust-worn flair) ...

the resurrections unseen” by william fowler collins

a dank, haunted collection of dense, noise-laced black ambience from new mexico's william fowler collins.

there are dark forces at work deep in the deserts of new mexico. william fowler collins has been hard at work since his last full-length effort, but collaborations with gog and aaron turner (of isis) haven’t deterred him from crafting this pitch-black follow up. the ingredients won’t surprise fans of ‘perdition hill radio’, but on ‘the resurrections unseen’, collins further damages and buries his palette of sounds beyond all recognition. howling field recordings are trapped between walls of tape hiss while white noise and twisted guitar suffers through overdub after overdub leaving only the picked carcass of what once a discernable sound. much was made of its predecessor’s deconstruction of black metal, but ‘the resurrections unseen’ takes this to another level entirely.

the album is, for all intents and purposes, a black metal record – but any traces of blast beats, hoarse, blood-curdling vocals or shrill distorted guitar have been totally obliterated. what remains are bleak, windswept textures, spine chilling rituals and the kind of doom-laden ambience that’ll have you double-bolting your doors and checking your phone lines. this is not theatre though; collins never resorts to the typical horror tropes, instead opting to suggest fear with the most restrained hand. as rolling hiss emerges from a muddy puddle of dank sub bass it might take a few listens to pick out exactly what you’re hearing at all, but the terror is there from the very beginning. many artists attempt dark music, but few really succeedcollins has managed it by merely suggesting what our brains already know. a frightening thought indeed.

biokinetics” by porter ricks

the holy grail of dub techno from thomas koner and andy mellwig.

techno isn’t a genre that has birthed many consistent albums, and the dub techno subgenre even less so, but one indisputable classic is porter ricks’ debut ‘biokinetics’. originally issued on the legendary basic channel sub-label chain reaction in 1996 following a trio of 12”s, ‘biokinetics’ was the first of the label’s album releases, and still stands as its crowning achievement. the duo was made up of dark ambient pioneer thomas köner and sound engineer andy mellwig, and between them they re-framed the techno sound, imbuing the spacious ambience pioneered by label bosses mark ernestus and moritz von oswald with a frosty, isolated experimental bent, and combining it with the sort of haunted minimalism of early plastikman.

what separated ‘biokinetics’ from other albums at the time was its unwavering narrative – the exact sound has been interpreted countless times since, but the immersive qualities of this singular record have rarely been touched. maybe it is down to the silvery underwater concept that ties each track together – the bubbling pads, sub-aquatic basses and muffled kick drums. but as with any great album, it’s hard to exactly put your finger on what makes it a classic. simply put ‘biokinetics’ is one of the most important records in the genre, and it’s pleasure for us to make it available to the world once more.
