march 2013 release ; revamp of this 2007 double-lp version of this essential set, containing the complete recordings of arto lindsay, ikue mori, and tim wright / robin crutchfield’s no-wave phenom dna ... contains a few extra pieces exclusive to this edition ...

in regards to the music and its affect on me upon discovering the first dna e.p. back in 1992 ::

i had arrived in boston with an armload of “hot guitar” records, the ventures, a little bit of derek bailey, etc... knowing full well there was a universe of music out there waiting to be discovered. unfortunately, the tastes of the majority of my classmates ran the gamut from zappa to... steve vai. desperately needing to fill the void i spent the majority of my time haunting the local record shops, memorizing their stock, reading liner notes... you know, learning.

one morning i skipped my “history of jazz” seminar & instead walked over to kenmore square, drank a very large coffee, then hit planet records. the staff there, surely at this stage annoyed with my incessant pestering, not to mention that of my music-school brethren (“do you have any records with, like, really weird guitar on them?”), in a pre-emptive strike, pulled out a frippertronics bootleg the moment i walked in the door & put it on... i of course bit, but while checking it out i noticed, on their “rarities” wall a copy of the first dna single, “you & you b/w little ants.” i knew the name from john zorn’s copious referencing, as i did arto’s from his myriad dalliances with “downtown” 80s new york music culture. at $20 this was by far the most i’d ever paid for a 7”, but goddamm if it wasn’t worth it in the long run...

i got home, shelved the frippertronics (to this day i don’t think i’ve ever listened to it !!!), sunk into my easy-chair, and spun the dna single... the opening 10 seconds of “you & you” (check the sound-sample to your left) was enough of a shock to my system that i literally fell over while attempting to re-queue the side, hitting my cheek on a folding office table (a scar i still have to this day) in the process.

i sat there and listened to the first side approximately 20 times in a row, just attempting to get my head around the scale of the thing; the synth / kick pulse giving way to arto’s downright explosion of guitar-scrabble punctuated only by his tortured vocal interjections, clearly lurching to and fro the mic...

i’d never, and still to this day, haven’t heard anything else quite like it. i fought my hard-wired musical sensibilities, forged after a solid decade of guitar & composition lessons, to understand just why this was so appealing; suddenly the slow-burn / arc of all of that fuzoid guitar shred & noodelry just paled in comparison to a single two-minute sustained burst of pure energy.

the path from hereon out wrote itself; other downtown art-punk bands (contortions, mars, etc...) to the free guitar of sonny sharrock & rudolph grey, to the free jazz of albert ayler & frank wright, to the composed complexities of kagel & lachenmann, etc... all because of one record consisting of the first two pieces on this disc, which also finally issues the band’s american clave single, their pieces from no new york,, a few rare compilation pieces, and a bunch of live material on disc.

obviously i can’t recommend this one enough; as a gateway-drug into rougher forms of music it really can’t be underestimated, but even if you’re a die-hard art-punk zombie, you can’t underestimate the sheer force of this music. essential.

new york's seminal no wave band, dna, makes it's highly anticipated american cd debut with this definitive collection of studio and live recordings. surviving two line ups over a brief four years; this highly influential, strikingly original and extremely under recorded band left a huge void in it's wake.

formed in 1978, brazilian raised singer/guitarist arto lindsay hastily assembled an international trio of non-musicians. robin crutchfield played keyboard and japanese-born ikue mori played drums. dna played their first gig within weeks and recorded their first 7" shortly afterwards. the ear of brian eno was quickly caught, recording them for the infamous no new york compilation alongside james chance, mars, and teenage jesus & the jerks.

before no new york was released, robin left the band after a total tenure of nine months. bassist tim wright had just left pere ubu, relocated to ny and quickly joined dna. with a new face, a new instrument and a new sound, dna recorded their classic nine minute ep a taste of dna.

dna toured the states and europe bringing their explosive live show to a wider audience. dna only released 12 songs during it's lifetime, and another 3 shortly afterwards on a european compilation. their impact was far and wide reaching. many musicians have sited dna as a main influence including thurston moore of sonic youth and the band blonde redhead, who appropriated their name from a dna song title.

this cd compiles all of the studio and many choice live recordings. of particular interest are the original lineup's 'early versions' of 'detached,' '5:30' and 'low' (which is closely related to 'a new low.') the unreleased studio tracks 'grapefruit,' 'police chase' and 'young teenagers talk sex' are heard here for the first time as well as live versions of the unreleased songs 'nearing' and 'surrender.' exclusive liner notes from byron coley, jason gross and glenn o'brien pack the 16 page booklet alongside many unseen photos and flyers.

rel press release...

ashley paul
'line the clouds'lp

multi-faceted composer and performer ashley paul releases her new lp 'line the clouds', out march 18th on brooklyn’s rel records.

a hyper-intuitive record, where off-kilter instrumentation meets beautifully crafted melodies to convey the very essence of ‘musicality’, ‘line the clouds’ contains 44.18 minutes of sonic paradoxes and dichotomies.

stirring up a zephyr of twelve blissfully cacophonous sounds - singular moments of an indivisible whole – the focus is on guitar, voice and saxophone, but ashley also employs everything from flute, clarinet, guitar, bells, percussion and prepared strings in her melodic endeavours which simultaneously plugs in the ghost of american song.

from ‘wide expanse’ - where high-pitched reeds and whistles collide with richer tones and ashley’s fragile voice - through the simple, sparkling beauty of the lp’s title track – with the guitar at the helm – and the multi-vocal flutterings of ‘watch them pass’, there’s also the freeing experimentalism and atonal clatter of ‘feb.21’ – a song which ably immortalises a feeling of stomach churning anguish – and the album’s gentle, abstract finaleyou’re a feeling’.

this brooklyn based artist is at the vanguard of the new wave of music currently rippling through the city where opposing strains of style and sound work in unison.

in addition to her solo projects, ashley plays saxophone and clarinet with anthony coleman as a duo and as part of his damaged quartet. with longtime musical partner eli keszler as aster (both of which appear on line the clouds), she also performs as aster, with sakiko mori as paul & maurey and with geoff mullen and keszler as oxtirn.

ashley has also performed or recorded with artists including loren connors, roscoe mitchell, aki onda, joe maneri, greg kelley, joe morris, seijiro murayama, ran blake, bill nace and charles cohen. she received a masters of music from new england conservatory in 2007.

line the clouds’ will be available in a limited edition lp available on colored vinyl in a custom sealed package with screenprinted wraparound of ashley’s animal drawings.

ashley paul is a performer and composer based in brooklyn, new york. she uses an array of instruments including saxophone, clarinet, voice, guitar, bells and percussion, mixing disparate elements to create a colorful palette of sound that works its way into her intuitive songs; free forming, introverted melody. this blend manifests beautiful and simple musical forms against acoustic experimentation. her solo albums have received high praise being chosen "album of the column" in the wire, number one on byron coley and thurston moore’s “tongue top ten” in arthur magazine, and included on npr's all songs consideredbest of 2010”. she has been interviewed in the german magazine spex, the sound projector magazine, foxy digitalis and on rare frequency.

2002 release ; ... after the first disc of spoils of war material came out and was received warmly, shadoks asked mr. cuomo to dig up yet further, unreleased material, and that’s exactly what we have here ... more late 60’s midwest concrète-psych bits; some songs, a few jazz-rock stormers with institial electronic treatments, and a few collages ...

... while overall not as “electronic” as the s/t set, there’s still plenty to love herein ...
shadoks press release...

originally released in 1968 / 70, and headed by jim cuomo, this is a follow-up album of unreleased live and studio material from the spoils of war, previously released as a double lp. the spoils of war made some of the most inspiring but strange music from the '60s, in the same awe-inspiring vein as early mothers of invention. this is music with a hearty intellectual background, combined with well-crafted and well-performed music in the key of zappa. other influences might indicate early soft machine, slap happy, henry cow and faust. for open-minded listeners, the spoils of war are a must: experiments with electronic sounds, compositions and performances of beautiful harmonies and songs, and all circa 1967 / 68. how in the world could he make music like this so early? well, it must have been the inspiring influence of jim cuomo's musical teacher john cage. even today the music of the spoils of war goes far beyond most other modern pop music and will be inspiring for many years from now.

1999 release ; ... spoils of war were an experimental-psych group spearheded by james cuomo, a student of early wdr-studio composer herbert brün (in fact one of brün’s killer fractal-paintings was used as the cover for the original 33rpm ep of “susan never smiles...” ) at the university of illinois urbana in the late 60’s ; it’s one of the better examples of the late 60’s psychedelia thing butting heads with the academic tape-studio environ ...

if you’re feeling the first white noise lp, silver apples, fifty foot hose, etc... this is a pretty amazing piece of that very same puzzle ... there’s a bit of fairy-dipped lite-psych, but it’s augmented by a few killer musique concrète pieces ... highly recommended !!!
shadoks press release...

cd version of this 1969 'psych-concrete' masterpiece (previously issued on shadoks as an über-pricey lp / 7" ep set as well as an lp edition "as texture sleeve plus 7" ep, 25 numbered copies") that would certainly qualify for 'private-press' status were it originally released in 1969 (only a pair of ep’s were) ...

spearheaded by james cuomo, a student of professor herbert brün (wdr studios heavy during the 50's; worked alongside beyer / eimert, stockhausen, gottfried-michael koening, later taught at the university of illinois ... 4 recent cd's on emf fill in a few gaps) whom also designed the original cover (cd / lp reissue cover uses malcolm smith's 1954 painring 'imagination' to rather appropriate affect). includes the 3 aforementioned 7" tracks (credited solely to james cuomo) from 1970.

some rather inspired promotional muckery would lead you to believe: “never pressed before so you don’t have to look for originals, folks. heavy psych with tiny folky edges plus electronic soundscapes like first album by mothers of invention. has a connection to mormos but only the musicians, not the music. this is real heavy acid stuff, weird and twisted, stoned to max, pure lsd (loud screaming distortions), warning, people with fragile heart condition and emotionally unbalanced should not play this album....”.

... it actually sounds nothing like that (although the mothers reference isn't too off base), but contains some rather twisted musique concrete interludes (what could be more ideal than the tonal vocabulary of tape music fed through the medulla of a west-coast-wannabe hippie-freak beatnik circa 1969?) that weave throughout some pretty damaged era-ideals-in-song-form replete with o/t guitar solo bits, flute, organ & the rest.

taiga press release...

catalog number: taiga 25
artist: eleh
title: homage
format: 3xlp box
total running time: 2:04:48
release date: 2 april 2013

presenting a unified whole, the homage 3lp boxed set contains homage to the square wave, ...sine wave and ...pointed waveforms, all out of print until now. initially released separately in 2008, 2009 and 2012 respectively with custom letterpress jackets, this collection includes new retrospective artwork by john brien. each disc comes in its own one-color silkscreen jacket using the same blue, orange and green from the original editions; all housed in a rigid white satin-coated slipcase with spot varnish printing hand-numbered out of 800.

eleh, an artist who flourishes in restraint, uses a reduced sonic vocabulary to highlight delicate intricacies in a logical path toward harmonious satisfaction. the organization of hypnotic square waves, rippling sine waves and triangle/saw tooth waveforms is a discourse in the infinity, rather than the limits, of reduction. by employing a natural practice of balanced interpretation eleh enables an individual reaction free of the clutter of white noise.

selbstportrait vol. iii / reise durch arcadien
lp (180g vinyl)
release date: march 22, 2013
label: bureau b
cat no.: bb 126

the long overdue reissue of “selbstporträt iii / reise durch arcadien” closes a gap in the roedelius oeuvre which his followers have long since had their eyes on. those who found the self-portrait series irresistible had to endure a lengthy, impatient wait for the “journey through arcadia”.

as on the other releases in this series, the pieces on “reise durch arcadien” are musical sketches, fleeting ideas and aphorisms of a musician whose exuberant imagination assumes tonal form in almost every moment of his life. created between 1973 and 1978 and recorded with decidedly modest technical equipment, this music reflects roedelius’ most intimate, wholly undisguised vision of humane music. almost casually, roedelius offers us as listeners direct access to his artistic riches. neither seeking to impose himself upon us, nor setting out to impress, he simply wishes to share with us something he could barely put into words.

utterly detached from time, stylistically unique, these tracks could easily be contemporary creations. only the questionable recording quality (common to the majority of the self-portrait pieces) hints at a bygone age. this in no way diminishes the musical quality, however. on the contrary, it serves to emphasize the spontaneity and authenticity of the sketches. roedelius was not interested in creating smoothly polished, perfect electronic music productions. his artistry lies in capturing musical ideas which appear like flashes of lightning and developing them through improvisation. with this in mind, he always pressed record on his tape machine when he sat down at the keyboard, channelling his thoughts, feelings and moods into music. in such moments of inspiration, there was simply no space to consider sound quality, dynamics, tonal balance or special sound effects. music was born in roedelius, it flowed out of him in realtime, unfiltered, and was caught on tape by the assiduous recording device.

the wires cracked
lp

release date 16.04.2013

about 'the wires cracked':

the recordings for "the wires cracked" were completed in a frenzied two week period in october of 2012. i had mentioned in discussing a previous album’s construction that i prefer to forget how i build any particular electro-acoustic amalgam. this is so that i don’t get too precious with them, so that i could refine them further, so that the sounds themselves speak beyond their aggregate parts. with the album being relatively fresh in my mind, i can still recall various components to "the wires cracked" -- the desolate howl of a metal screen activated by a desert wind, the hissing air compression from the cooling apparatus for a laser at the slac national accelerator laboratory operated by stanford university, and the tremolo rhythms from a thin wire that still get me thinking fondly of günter schickert -- but much of the caustic drone, thrumming reverberation, and tactile grit thoroughly escapes me. that's probably for the best, since these various parts speak to an existential rupturing, the collapse of the self, the aftershocks of dark energy, and a belief in the hope for renewal.

about jim haynes:

describing his work through the pithy phrase, "i rust things," jim haynes is an artist who has developed a vocabulary of decay that he has applied to photography, video, installation, and sound. haynes' sound work draws from shortwave radio static, electric field disturbances, controlled feedback manipulation, and numerous textural scrapings, manifesting broken minimalism of magnetic drones and volatile tactility. this engineering of disparate materials and media seeks to evince the unpredictability of decay, to manifest its potential for a rough hewn beauty, and to bear witness to its inevitability.

he has exhibited internationally at electric works (san francisco), the san francisco museum of modern art , the berkeley art museum, the exploratorium (san francisco), westspace (melbourne, australia), jack straw productions (seattle), eyedrum (atlanta), diapason (new york), and the lab (san francisco). haynes has published his work through the helen scarsdale agency, 23five incorporated, intransitive, observatoire, and elevator bath. he has collaborated with steven stapleton (nurse with wound), m.s. waldron (irr. app. (ext.)), keith evans, allison holt, and loren chasse. haynes is one of the directors for 23five incorporated and is the sole occupant at the helen scarsdale agency.

recorded at woodstock electric ny 2012

you'll be safe forever marks the first release from locust in 12 years. mark van hoen, who made a string of influential releases as locust on r&s records in the 1990’s, all but retired the alias at the end of that decade. in may 2012, van hoen was invited to perform a live set on wfmu radio. in order to make the set more spontaneous and add a further dimension, he asked friend and fellow musician louis sherman to collaborate. while improvising new material in sherman’s brooklyn rehearsal studio, it swiftly became obvious that the material sounded like locust. inspired by joint explorations with found sound sources and ambient textures, and sharing a pan-dimensional immersion in the length and breadth of analogue and digital recording, the duo performed a series of tracks live. this material, combined with previously recorded tape tracks dating back to 2006 form the bulk of the album. the melancholic depths of electronic music explored in those improvisations, expanded further through subsequent sessions at van hoen’s woodstock, ny studio, have resulted in this latest entry in locust’s impressive discography.

the record showcases prime examples of van hoen's compulsively hypnotic beats and abstracted pop vocals—already hallmarks of his collected work since 1993—manipulating a global variety of samples in celemony’s melodyne software to weave a unique sonic tapestry, as inviting as it is intricate. paired with sherman's evocative synth improvisations—an immediately visceral element new to locust — these collaborators have crafted a shattered landscape that bridges two persectives of progressive movement in electronic music under a single name. sherman, an american from baltimore, comes to the band armed with a vast knowledge of the history of electronic music. this, combined with londoner mark van hoen’s known musical pedigree maps the complete topography of a landscpape — its shadow and light, depth and height, mesmerizing complexity and ethereal simplicity — with a break-beating heart and alchemical ear.

lp

release date 18.03.2013

parallel / grayscale is the first collaborative work between giuseppe ielasi and kassel jaeger.

it has been composed from two different improvisation sessions. the first one took place in paris, in october 2011. the second happened in oreno, in june 2012, after the first concert ielasi & jaeger performed together.

the first session was a pure analog devices improvisation whereas the second one was more laptop-oriented. these two moments have been melt together, forming two different subtracts of the same material.

gratitude to fabio carboni and sara serighelli from o', milano.

there has been a recent surge in activity from robert hampson, with all manner of solo recordings and performances popping up. its only logical that he reactivates his beloved main project. as we all know, main laid the foundations during the 1990s for much of love of abstract guitar treatments in electronic music throughout the 2000s.

hampson has teamed up with stephan mathieu to create a stunning new album. on ‘ablation’, mathieu adds extra tonal colour and an obscure rhythmic palette to hampson’s exacting treatments and detailed use of layered concrète sounds to create an emotionally charged and fascinating work.

old fans of main will not be disappointed, and neither will new followers of experimental audio.

packaged with images by grebo gray with layout by dave coppenhall, and expertly mastered and cut by rashad becker, ‘ablation’ is a highlight for the spring 2013 season.

glistening examples press release...

glistening examples is proud to present “leave/trace” (glex-1301), the vinyl debut of grisha shakhnes.

formerly operating under the name of mites, shakhnes has been recording and performing in tel aviv, israel since 2008. his work has been issued both privately in limited handmade cd-r editions, and internationally though alamut records (jerusalem), mystery sea (belgium), and copy for your records (nyc). consider ‘leave/trace’ a graduation ceremony, as shakhnes steps away from pseudonymity and into the bright lights of his own exceptional music.

leave/trace” offers a compelling display of musical abstraction, blending field recordings from peculiar and mundane origins into sumptuously detailed and surreally original new forms. shakhnes is deftly able to capture and juxtapose otherwise overlooked details of commonplace events, placing his work at the fulcrum of contemporary tape music.

never overly literal, “leave/trace” instead allows the listener to find their own way through its compositions, granting rich reward for those willing to make the journey.

leave/trace” is a beautiful lp, published in an edition of 500 copies.

jean-sébastien truchy - l'amitié c60
tq44: edition of 100

from his work with previous groups such as fly pan am to his impeccable label los discos enfantasmes, jean-sébastien truchy has long been a staple of the experimental music scene in montreal.

his recent solo recordings under his own name are at once remarkably challenging and engrossing. l'amitié, his lengthiest release to date, continues that line with a brilliant mix of heavy modular synthesis, vocals, and field recordings. sparse nature sounds, buzzing synth blasts, and sequenced melodies set the stage for truchy's incredible vocals, which range from full-on black metal screaming to almost operatic singing. there are elements of pop, musique concrète, and more, but this is truly genre-defying music in every sense of the term.

pro-dubbed and imprinted chrome cassettes, featuring designs by caroline teagle.

abduction press release...

the invisible hands is the english translation of the band's original egyptian arabic name: el ayadi el khafeyya. taking almost two years to create amidst an unusual and challenging backdrop, this is the brand new project of alvarius b. (alan bishop of sun city girls).

eleven highly crafted new songs projected through his typically dark lens of songwriting and a band of brilliant musicians from cairo, the premier, self-titled cd version of this album is the english language vocals edition (see below) delivered in ab's patented sinister style; drenched in lovely psychedelic folk arrangements and vocal choruses with a nod to what could have potentially been an album that surfaced decades ago but instead found its way into the future superimposed over historic and tumultuous times in the center of the arab world. the group was established during the summer of 2011 and the album was recorded in cairo in may of 2012.

band members include cherif el masri and aya hemeda (both former members of popular egyptian group eskenderella) with drummer magued nagati. on a handful of songs, several other players from the cairo scene are featured including sam shalabi (shalabi effect / land of kush) on oud and mohamed medhat on violin and viola. all tracks written and sung by alvarius b. in english.

march 2013 release ; ... third in this (hopefully) ongoing series collecting all non-album output by the bishop-bishop-gocher trio, largely culled from their mid-90’s era ...
abduction press release...

volume 3 in the series of sun city girls singles, compilations, and rare tracks, consists of material recorded between the mid-1980s and early 1990s. much of this collection reflects the arabic guitar instrumental and acoustic pseudo-asian vocal folk styles of the band from the period when they recorded relentlessly.

the 14 cuts vary wildly in scope yet maintain a consistent listening experience throughout, bridging a wide gap between the band's second full-length lp grotto of miracles (track 3 -- "gum arabic" -- being the only true outtake from that recording session) in 1986 and the 1993 launch of the group's abduction label after the band relocated from phoenix to seattle. all four tracks from the eye mohini single as well as all six tracks from the borungku si derita double single are included here, the latter featuring a vicious rehearsal version of esoterica of abyssynia with a rare captured occurrence of both bishop brothers playing electric guitars. the remaining two tracks from three fake female orgasms double single not included on volume 2 of this series are present with the extremely rare studio version of "kickin' the dragon" from a triple 7" box set released by an obscure bay area label in 1994.

the disc is rounded out by a 10-minute live track from the heinz afterworld lounge in oakland from 1992 where scg closed the show with a heavy and ecstatic version of "the flower" from their torch of the mystics lp. as in the previous two volumes of this series, this cd is sequenced to play as a full album and is an excellent entry point for the non-initiated into a band that produced as diverse and intimidating a back catalog as any other entity in modern music.

a collection of spiritual and gospel songs performed in informal non-church settings between 1965 and 1973. most are guitar-accompanied and performed by active or former blues artists. "most records of black religious music contain some form of gospel singing or congregational singing recorded at a church service. this album, though, tries to present a broader range of performance styles and contexts with the hope of showing the important role that religious music plays in the southern black communities and in the daily lives of individuals." --david evans, from the liner notes. lp, 16-page 11"x11" booklet, tip-on sleeve, 16 photographs. david evans is an ethnomusicologist and director of the ethnomusicology/regional studies program at the rudi e. scheidt school of music in the university of memphis, where he's worked since 1978.

kassidat: raw 45s from morocco

publication date: april 2, 2013

kassidat: raw 45s from morocco is a full-length lp that features six extended tracks from the golden age of the moroccan record industry. after morocco gained its independence in 1956, moroccan-owned record labels sprouted and flourished in casablanca. the inexpensive 45 rpm format allowed the record companies to release thousands of songs during the 1960s, creating a snapshot of the raw and hypnotic berber music that thrived throughout morocco.

powerful traditional styles were still alive and well at this time and untouched by international pop influences. kassidat looks back at this era and presents it anew for audiences hungry for intense and authentic folk music. david murray is the curator of haji maji, a blog dedicated to the exploration of 78 rpm asian music, as well as shellachead, a blog featuring 78s from around the world. he previously produced dust-to-digital's luk thung: classic & obscure 78s from the thai countryside, as well as the forthcoming longing for the past, a 4cd set of southeast asian 78s. in addition to collecting and researching old records, he is a musician and graphic designer in oakland, california.

it has become taken for granted that nothing concerned with art is self-evident any more, neither in it nor in its relationship with the whole - not even its right to exist." it is with these words that adorno begins his "aesthetic theory”.
