forever falling toward the sky
rs77
lp
edition of 300

us release date: june 12, 2012

'forever falling toward the sky' is the first ever release by bay area based vestals, aka lisa mcgee. a taught set of haunting electric ballads, these six tracks weave together a number of layered guitars and vocals into a smokey tapestry of blown electricity. rather than the ephemeral drones mcgee has been involved with recently, most notably the group-mind ensemble portraits & the duo higuma, vestals retains the clarity of song, with these hypnotic gems having been slowly carved out over a year of recording & mixing. filled out with drum machine & bass, 'forever falling toward the sky' really does have the feeling of a group completely jelled, hammering out feedback in a california basement, high on guitar worship & sunsets.

light cones
rs75
lp
edition of 750

us release date: september 13, 2011

golden retriever was formed in portland, or. in 2008 by multi-instrumentalists jonathan sielaff & matt carlson, both long time participants in the city's potent music scene. focusing on the relationship of two primarily monophonic instruments (carlson on modular synthesizer & sielaff on bass clarinet), and utilizing layering with a deft balance of improvisation & composition, the duo has created an infinitely varied approach to their sound world: dense, spacious, overwhelming, soothing and completely alien in equal measure. after their debut release on root strata in early 2010 (a small run cdr) they continued to perform steadily in portland, slowly refining their dynamics and releasing a number of small-run cassettes and another cdr. we're extremely happy to be working with golden retriever again, and even more so to release their very first edition on vinyl.

'light cones' is unique in the golden retriever discography as it's their first release more akin to their live performances, with each of the lp sides consisting of one extensive track. both sides find the group exploring the various colors of their pallete. from the electronic bog that opens side a, to the more zoned out meditations of the first half of side b. sielaff's bass clarinet continues to be an anchor for the duo, with its lower organ-like register providing a wide earthly gravity for the layering of sound. carlson's modular synth responds with everything from soft bass throbs to bursts of high-end, slippery keyboard runs and electronic blinks of colored noise, all filling up the stereo field. when the two build pace in unison, their energies head upward towards a hot magnetic peak, merging into one indistinguishable mass of sound, brilliant and shimmering. the come-downs are also sweet. long dark passages bathed in echo and west coast twilight.

june 2010 release ; beautiful lp from composer duane pitre’s “bowed guitar ensemble”, here channeling ellen fullman, paul panhuysen, & johan goedhart’s “long string” installations & performances ...

duane’s been on something of a roll w/ his last few releases (inc. the “harmonic series” comp he curated for important - great disc) & this just raises the bar with an impeccably recorded set of raga-centric music, perfect for zoning out mid-afternoon while life just buzzes by ... highly recommended !!!

origin
rs68
cd
edition of 500

us release date: october 5, 2010

the entirety of origin’s musical material is comprised of the vibrating strings of pitre’s ensemble of bowed “harmonic-guitars,” which are unconventionally strung electric guitars (utilizing multiunisons) tuned to intervals corresponding with the harmonic series, a.k.a. just intonation. no effects processing (pre or post) was used in this recording. all effect-like qualities result from the multi-unison strings (phasing), sympathetic vibrations, combination/ difference tones (of the chosen just tuning), and natural acoustic phenomena as such.

pitre has releases on labels such as important records, trome records, nna, and quiet design. in 2010 pitre will have multiple releases of his work on root strata. origin is limited to 300 copies in full color lp jackets. pitre has presented his works in nyc at such spaces as roulette, the stone, moma’s p.s.1, phillips de pury & co., st. marks church, the knitting factory, and issue project room (where he was the spring 2009 artist in residence). he has also performed in other cities across the u.s., as well as in europe. he has shared bills with artists such as marc ribot, tony conrad, audrey chen, sean meehan, and james blackshaw.

melodious thunk recorded in 2012 at ic studio, which is now in london. articulate was recorded live at ic studio quite a while ago, when it was in preston.

so, things have gone full circle potter’s first cassette was released in 1980 and here we are around thirty-three and a third years later, observing the release of another cassette. the intervening period has seen a number of developments. the icr label was inaugurated and still continues today, having released over 70 cassettes, records & cds.

ic studio was established soon after and has been operated by potter (almost) continuously since the early 80s, at a number of locations. there, potter has recorded, mixed and produced a wide array of projects. he has gained a reputation for innovative mixing and sound processing, working with artists such as current 93, fovea hex, ora, organum, monos, andrew chalk, jonathan coleclough, paul bradley, darren tate and, most notably, with steven stapleton on many albums by the renowned nurse with wound. several solo works have been released, as well as many collaborations. for reasons best known to himself, he decided to try his hand at live performance and is astonished to be still allowed to do so. the second side of the cassette is actually a recording of a rehearsal for such an event and is documented, if only to prove that he does in fact actually plan ahead for these things. the first side is an exercise in mathematical repetition patterns, by someone whose counting is somewhat dubious.

ttw#53 – ray gallonnam june paik – a work for radio

cassette onlylimited edition of 250 copies

this hour-long compositional documentary was produced for the cbc radio series “signature,” and was originally broadcast on april 28, 1979. it was nominated for an actra award for best radio documentary of the year. it is the result of a remarkable creative collaboration by artists such as john cage, charlotte moorman, philip corner, and nam june paik himself with the author. interspersed throughout the portrait are audio realisations by ray gallon of conceptual works by nam june paik. thanks also to lorne tulk for remarkable engineering and creative contributions, and to digby peers for the courage to broadcast it.

author and producer: ray gallon.
mix engineer: lorne tulk.
additional technical assistance: john hollinger.
narration: ray gallon, russ germain.
series producer: digby peers.

biography:

ray gallon has been a communicator for over 40 years, half of that time as a radio producer and audio artist. although he had a classical music education, ray gravitated early towards the avant-garde, and was fascinated by musique concrète, electronic music, so-called progressive jazz, and the multitrack experiments of the rock revolution in the sixties. his first exposure, on television, to the work of john cage came very close to the moment when he wandered into a cinema by chance, and saw fellini’s 8 1/2. the one-two punch of these experiences left him delirious for the rest of his life.

ray studied theatre design at the university of alberta, and helped found theatre 3, edmonton’s second professional theatre company. he worked for many years in toronto as a lighting and sound designer for theatre and performance art. as a radio producer he has worked in almost every department at cbc radio except hard news. he was nurtured by glenn gould’s experiments with “compositional documentaries,” and developed his own style, inspired by gould’s work. in 1980 ray moved from toronto to new york and joined with julia lee prospero and brian flahive to form the airworks group. together, they produced innovative documentary and radio art programmes for npr in the u.s. and for independent public radio distribution, most notably the airworks series of original commissioned works for radio in different disciplines. ray joined the staff of public radio station wnyc in new york as a producer, and eventually became the station’s programme manager, guiding a programme schedule built around the creativity of 20th century music, art, and drama.

in the late 80s ray’s focus turned towards new media, communications art, and computers. after moving to france in 1992, he continued to produce audio art and radio while teaching courses in new media and working as a technical communicator. ray is currently a researcher with the transformation society, and shares his life between barcelona, spain, and the languedoc region of france.

with “studio reihe neuer musik”, wergo created a trademark of advanced contemporary music in the sixties of the past century already. wergo now releases these highlights of 20th-century music history in an excellent sound quality on cd for the first time.

studio reihe” now continues with works by herbert eimert:

in view of recent events, especially in japan, herbert eimert's piece “epitaph für aikichi kuboyama” has taken on a sad topicality today: when in 1954 the first hydrogen bomb, the so-called bikini bomb, was tested in the south pacific, the japanese fishing boat fikuryumara was approximately 130 km from the epicentre. all fishermen on board required months of medical treatment; the fisherman aikichi kuboyama died of radiation poisoning after five months and became the first long-distance fatality of the nuclear age. the poetic epitaph for kuboyama, or more precisely the sound material drawn from the inscription spoken in german, forms the basis of the present tape composition: “of all the sound spectra known to us, that of the spoken word is not only the richest and most complex, but also the one most similar to electronically produced sounds.(eimert)

by using electronic equipment such as loudspeakers, tape recorders, amplifiers, and filters the stream of spoken words is always present under the surface as though the inscription on the gravestone constantly flows past the listener’s ears in ever-shifting transformations of sound.

eimert’s “sechs studien[six studies], composed immediately after “epitaph”, was created from the same source material. in contrast to “epitaph” “sechs studien” uses only abstract musical sounds: that is, sounds in whose spectrum the spoken word can no longer be recognized.

the recordings were originally published on lp in 1966 (wergo, wer 60014).

march 2013 release ; ... lovely set of maximally-procured, minimal unisons channeled by three of contemporary greece’s experimental-music leading lights :: cellist nikos veliotis, bassist coti k, and live-electronicist ilios ...
pan press release...

mohammad 'som sakrifis'
format: lp
label: pan
cat.no: pan 37
release date: march 2013

mohammad is a chamber music trio consisting of coti k (contrabass), ilios (oscillators) and nikos veliotis (cello). based in greece, mohammad make long form work drone works that explore the lower end of the frequency spectrum whilst retaining an intense emotional capacity. the results are monumental slow moving physical blocks of sound, both daunting and musical. the sheer weight of these recordings is impressive, the interplay of the musicians and instruments staggering, this end result being an album rich with immense harmonious abstraction which highlights years of dedication to their unique path.

following on from their previous releases (the highly regarded 'roto vildblomma' cd and the 'spiriti' 3lp box, both on antifrost) 'som sakrifis' follows the trio through three tracks of deep space experimentation where the acoustic and electronic blend together as a monumental whole. listening to 'som sakrifis' takes the listener on an expansive journey through the netherworld of the low range whilst retaining distinct traces of musicality. the time and space in these works have a logic more akin to that of hungarian filmmaker bela tarr than any contemporary music references. monumental monochromatic movement is the order of the day. sit back, strap in and let these fine explorers take you way out into the nether world.

the lp is mastered and cut by rashad becker at d&m, pressed on 140g vinyl. it is packaged in a pro-press color jacket which itself is housed in a silkscreened pvc sleeve with artwork by kathryn politis & bill kouligas.

march 2013 release ; revamp of this 2007 double-lp version of this essential set, containing the complete recordings of arto lindsay, ikue mori, and tim wright / robin crutchfield’s no-wave phenom dna ... contains a few extra pieces exclusive to this edition ...

in regards to the music and its affect on me upon discovering the first dna e.p. back in 1992 ::

i had arrived in boston with an armload of “hot guitar” records, the ventures, a little bit of derek bailey, etc... knowing full well there was a universe of music out there waiting to be discovered. unfortunately, the tastes of the majority of my classmates ran the gamut from zappa to... steve vai. desperately needing to fill the void i spent the majority of my time haunting the local record shops, memorizing their stock, reading liner notes... you know, learning.

one morning i skipped my “history of jazz” seminar & instead walked over to kenmore square, drank a very large coffee, then hit planet records. the staff there, surely at this stage annoyed with my incessant pestering, not to mention that of my music-school brethren (“do you have any records with, like, really weird guitar on them?”), in a pre-emptive strike, pulled out a frippertronics bootleg the moment i walked in the door & put it on... i of course bit, but while checking it out i noticed, on their “rarities” wall a copy of the first dna single, “you & you b/w little ants.” i knew the name from john zorn’s copious referencing, as i did arto’s from his myriad dalliances with “downtown” 80s new york music culture. at $20 this was by far the most i’d ever paid for a 7”, but goddamm if it wasn’t worth it in the long run...

i got home, shelved the frippertronics (to this day i don’t think i’ve ever listened to it !!!), sunk into my easy-chair, and spun the dna single... the opening 10 seconds of “you & you” (check the sound-sample to your left) was enough of a shock to my system that i literally fell over while attempting to re-queue the side, hitting my cheek on a folding office table (a scar i still have to this day) in the process.

i sat there and listened to the first side approximately 20 times in a row, just attempting to get my head around the scale of the thing; the synth / kick pulse giving way to arto’s downright explosion of guitar-scrabble punctuated only by his tortured vocal interjections, clearly lurching to and fro the mic...

i’d never, and still to this day, haven’t heard anything else quite like it. i fought my hard-wired musical sensibilities, forged after a solid decade of guitar & composition lessons, to understand just why this was so appealing; suddenly the slow-burn / arc of all of that fuzoid guitar shred & noodelry just paled in comparison to a single two-minute sustained burst of pure energy.

the path from hereon out wrote itself; other downtown art-punk bands (contortions, mars, etc...) to the free guitar of sonny sharrock & rudolph grey, to the free jazz of albert ayler & frank wright, to the composed complexities of kagel & lachenmann, etc... all because of one record consisting of the first two pieces on this disc, which also finally issues the band’s american clave single, their pieces from no new york,, a few rare compilation pieces, and a bunch of live material on disc.

obviously i can’t recommend this one enough; as a gateway-drug into rougher forms of music it really can’t be underestimated, but even if you’re a die-hard art-punk zombie, you can’t underestimate the sheer force of this music. essential.

new york's seminal no wave band, dna, makes it's highly anticipated american cd debut with this definitive collection of studio and live recordings. surviving two line ups over a brief four years; this highly influential, strikingly original and extremely under recorded band left a huge void in it's wake.

formed in 1978, brazilian raised singer/guitarist arto lindsay hastily assembled an international trio of non-musicians. robin crutchfield played keyboard and japanese-born ikue mori played drums. dna played their first gig within weeks and recorded their first 7" shortly afterwards. the ear of brian eno was quickly caught, recording them for the infamous no new york compilation alongside james chance, mars, and teenage jesus & the jerks.

before no new york was released, robin left the band after a total tenure of nine months. bassist tim wright had just left pere ubu, relocated to ny and quickly joined dna. with a new face, a new instrument and a new sound, dna recorded their classic nine minute ep a taste of dna.

dna toured the states and europe bringing their explosive live show to a wider audience. dna only released 12 songs during it's lifetime, and another 3 shortly afterwards on a european compilation. their impact was far and wide reaching. many musicians have sited dna as a main influence including thurston moore of sonic youth and the band blonde redhead, who appropriated their name from a dna song title.

this cd compiles all of the studio and many choice live recordings. of particular interest are the original lineup's 'early versions' of 'detached,' '5:30' and 'low' (which is closely related to 'a new low.') the unreleased studio tracks 'grapefruit,' 'police chase' and 'young teenagers talk sex' are heard here for the first time as well as live versions of the unreleased songs 'nearing' and 'surrender.' exclusive liner notes from byron coley, jason gross and glenn o'brien pack the 16 page booklet alongside many unseen photos and flyers.

ashley paul
'line the clouds'lp

multi-faceted composer and performer ashley paul releases her new lp 'line the clouds', out march 18th on brooklyn’s rel records.

a hyper-intuitive record, where off-kilter instrumentation meets beautifully crafted melodies to convey the very essence of ‘musicality’, ‘line the clouds’ contains 44.18 minutes of sonic paradoxes and dichotomies.

stirring up a zephyr of twelve blissfully cacophonous sounds - singular moments of an indivisible whole – the focus is on guitar, voice and saxophone, but ashley also employs everything from flute, clarinet, guitar, bells, percussion and prepared strings in her melodic endeavours which simultaneously plugs in the ghost of american song.

from ‘wide expanse’ - where high-pitched reeds and whistles collide with richer tones and ashley’s fragile voice - through the simple, sparkling beauty of the lp’s title track – with the guitar at the helm – and the multi-vocal flutterings of ‘watch them pass’, there’s also the freeing experimentalism and atonal clatter of ‘feb.21’ – a song which ably immortalises a feeling of stomach churning anguish – and the album’s gentle, abstract finaleyou’re a feeling’.

this brooklyn based artist is at the vanguard of the new wave of music currently rippling through the city where opposing strains of style and sound work in unison.

in addition to her solo projects, ashley plays saxophone and clarinet with anthony coleman as a duo and as part of his damaged quartet. with longtime musical partner eli keszler as aster (both of which appear on line the clouds), she also performs as aster, with sakiko mori as paul & maurey and with geoff mullen and keszler as oxtirn.

ashley has also performed or recorded with artists including loren connors, roscoe mitchell, aki onda, joe maneri, greg kelley, joe morris, seijiro murayama, ran blake, bill nace and charles cohen. she received a masters of music from new england conservatory in 2007.

line the clouds’ will be available in a limited edition lp available on colored vinyl in a custom sealed package with screenprinted wraparound of ashley’s animal drawings.

ashley paul is a performer and composer based in brooklyn, new york. she uses an array of instruments including saxophone, clarinet, voice, guitar, bells and percussion, mixing disparate elements to create a colorful palette of sound that works its way into her intuitive songs; free forming, introverted melody. this blend manifests beautiful and simple musical forms against acoustic experimentation. her solo albums have received high praise being chosen "album of the column" in the wire, number one on byron coley and thurston moore’s “tongue top ten” in arthur magazine, and included on npr's all songs consideredbest of 2010”. she has been interviewed in the german magazine spex, the sound projector magazine, foxy digitalis and on rare frequency.

shadoks press release...

originally released in 1968 / 70, and headed by jim cuomo, this is a follow-up album of unreleased live and studio material from the spoils of war, previously released as a double lp. the spoils of war made some of the most inspiring but strange music from the '60s, in the same awe-inspiring vein as early mothers of invention. this is music with a hearty intellectual background, combined with well-crafted and well-performed music in the key of zappa. other influences might indicate early soft machine, slap happy, henry cow and faust. for open-minded listeners, the spoils of war are a must: experiments with electronic sounds, compositions and performances of beautiful harmonies and songs, and all circa 1967 / 68. how in the world could he make music like this so early? well, it must have been the inspiring influence of jim cuomo's musical teacher john cage. even today the music of the spoils of war goes far beyond most other modern pop music and will be inspiring for many years from now.

1999 release ; ... spoils of war were an experimental-psych group spearheded by james cuomo, a student of early wdr-studio composer herbert brün (in fact one of brün’s killer fractal-paintings was used as the cover for the original 33rpm ep of “susan never smiles...” ) at the university of illinois urbana in the late 60’s ; it’s one of the better examples of the late 60’s psychedelia thing butting heads with the academic tape-studio environ ...

if you’re feeling the first white noise lp, silver apples, fifty foot hose, etc... this is a pretty amazing piece of that very same puzzle ... there’s a bit of fairy-dipped lite-psych, but it’s augmented by a few killer musique concrète pieces ... highly recommended !!!
shadoks press release...

cd version of this 1969 'psych-concrete' masterpiece (previously issued on shadoks as an über-pricey lp / 7" ep set as well as an lp edition "as texture sleeve plus 7" ep, 25 numbered copies") that would certainly qualify for 'private-press' status were it originally released in 1969 (only a pair of ep’s were) ...

spearheaded by james cuomo, a student of professor herbert brün (wdr studios heavy during the 50's; worked alongside beyer / eimert, stockhausen, gottfried-michael koening, later taught at the university of illinois ... 4 recent cd's on emf fill in a few gaps) whom also designed the original cover (cd / lp reissue cover uses malcolm smith's 1954 painring 'imagination' to rather appropriate affect). includes the 3 aforementioned 7" tracks (credited solely to james cuomo) from 1970.

some rather inspired promotional muckery would lead you to believe: “never pressed before so you don’t have to look for originals, folks. heavy psych with tiny folky edges plus electronic soundscapes like first album by mothers of invention. has a connection to mormos but only the musicians, not the music. this is real heavy acid stuff, weird and twisted, stoned to max, pure lsd (loud screaming distortions), warning, people with fragile heart condition and emotionally unbalanced should not play this album....”.

... it actually sounds nothing like that (although the mothers reference isn't too off base), but contains some rather twisted musique concrete interludes (what could be more ideal than the tonal vocabulary of tape music fed through the medulla of a west-coast-wannabe hippie-freak beatnik circa 1969?) that weave throughout some pretty damaged era-ideals-in-song-form replete with o/t guitar solo bits, flute, organ & the rest.

catalog number: taiga 25
artist: eleh
title: homage
format: 3xlp box
total running time: 2:04:48
release date: 2 april 2013

presenting a unified whole, the homage 3lp boxed set contains homage to the square wave, ...sine wave and ...pointed waveforms, all out of print until now. initially released separately in 2008, 2009 and 2012 respectively with custom letterpress jackets, this collection includes new retrospective artwork by john brien. each disc comes in its own one-color silkscreen jacket using the same blue, orange and green from the original editions; all housed in a rigid white satin-coated slipcase with spot varnish printing hand-numbered out of 800.

eleh, an artist who flourishes in restraint, uses a reduced sonic vocabulary to highlight delicate intricacies in a logical path toward harmonious satisfaction. the organization of hypnotic square waves, rippling sine waves and triangle/saw tooth waveforms is a discourse in the infinity, rather than the limits, of reduction. by employing a natural practice of balanced interpretation eleh enables an individual reaction free of the clutter of white noise.

roedelius
selbstportrait vol. iii / reise durch arcadien
lp (180g vinyl)
release date: march 22, 2013
label: bureau b
cat no.: bb 126

the long overdue reissue of “selbstporträt iii / reise durch arcadien” closes a gap in the roedelius oeuvre which his followers have long since had their eyes on. those who found the self-portrait series irresistible had to endure a lengthy, impatient wait for the “journey through arcadia”.

as on the other releases in this series, the pieces on “reise durch arcadien” are musical sketches, fleeting ideas and aphorisms of a musician whose exuberant imagination assumes tonal form in almost every moment of his life. created between 1973 and 1978 and recorded with decidedly modest technical equipment, this music reflects roedelius’ most intimate, wholly undisguised vision of humane music. almost casually, roedelius offers us as listeners direct access to his artistic riches. neither seeking to impose himself upon us, nor setting out to impress, he simply wishes to share with us something he could barely put into words.

utterly detached from time, stylistically unique, these tracks could easily be contemporary creations. only the questionable recording quality (common to the majority of the self-portrait pieces) hints at a bygone age. this in no way diminishes the musical quality, however. on the contrary, it serves to emphasize the spontaneity and authenticity of the sketches. roedelius was not interested in creating smoothly polished, perfect electronic music productions. his artistry lies in capturing musical ideas which appear like flashes of lightning and developing them through improvisation. with this in mind, he always pressed record on his tape machine when he sat down at the keyboard, channelling his thoughts, feelings and moods into music. in such moments of inspiration, there was simply no space to consider sound quality, dynamics, tonal balance or special sound effects. music was born in roedelius, it flowed out of him in realtime, unfiltered, and was caught on tape by the assiduous recording device.

the long overdue reissue of “selbstporträt iii / reise durch arcadien” closes a gap in the roedelius oeuvre which his followers have long since had their eyes on. those who found the self-portrait series irresistible had to endure a lengthy, impatient wait for the “journey through arcadia”.

as on the other releases in this series, the pieces on “reise durch arcadien” are musical sketches, fleeting ideas and aphorisms of a musician whose exuberant imagination assumes tonal form in almost every moment of his life. created between 1973 and 1978 and recorded with decidedly modest technical equipment, this music reflects roedelius’ most intimate, wholly undisguised vision of humane music. almost casually, roedelius offers us as listeners direct access to his artistic riches. neither seeking to impose himself upon us, nor setting out to impress, he simply wishes to share with us something he could barely put into words.

utterly detached from time, stylistically unique, these tracks could easily be contemporary creations. only the questionable recording quality (common to the majority of the self-portrait pieces) hints at a bygone age. this in no way diminishes the musical quality, however. on the contrary, it serves to emphasize the spontaneity and authenticity of the sketches. roedelius was not interested in creating smoothly polished, perfect electronic music productions. his artistry lies in capturing musical ideas which appear like flashes of lightning and developing them through improvisation. with this in mind, he always pressed record on his tape machine when he sat down at the keyboard, channelling his thoughts, feelings and moods into music. in such moments of inspiration, there was simply no space to consider sound quality, dynamics, tonal balance or special sound effects. music was born in roedelius, it flowed out of him in realtime, unfiltered, and was caught on tape by the assiduous recording device.
