robert hampsonsignaux” long playing record

  • signaux 1 (17:56)

  • signaux 2 (18:02)
october 2012 release ; ... first in a pair of lp’s from main’s robert hampson, showcasing his electro-acoustic work ...

... this one offers two pieces of impeccable analogue synthesizer mapping(s), composed for a multi-channel performance at a planetarium in poitiers last year ; on par with such keening high-frequency blasts of analogia as guy reibel’s “granulations-sillages” & pierre henry’s “mise en musique” this takes a decidedly lesswhiz-bang approach to the form, favoring a subtler, slow unveil of automated analogue stems ...

... awesome record, miles beyond the vast majority of what’s repped as “next-levelsynthesizer baptism(s) these days (in terms of pure timbral vastness & tightly controlled evolution) ... highly recommended !!!

ornamented walls” by vatican shadow

released to coincide with his first tour of europe, the album incorporates the live mix rehearsals of ‘operation neptune spear’ with tracks made in their aftermath, recorded straight to tape and mastered by matt colton at air studios.

anyone familiar with fernow’s live setup will recognise the distinct nature of this material – making use of stems and partial tracks separated into a cassette system which is then relayered and mixed, effected with electronic processing.

in short – fernow uses his tape machines like turntables in a mix, weaving a hazy and intuitive narrative of sounds that never quite head in the direction you expect, all imbued with an almost feral attitude that’s exhilarating to witness, their limitations (ever noticed how vs tracks end so abruptly? the tape ran out), and their mechanical machine qualities used to devastating effect.

- cd1 features luigi nono's la lontananza nostalgica utopica futura (1992), an original title, a unique aesthetic metaphor even: one could say that the past reflected in the present [nostalgica] brings about a creative utopia [utopica]; the desire for what is known becomes a vehicle for what will be possible [futura] through the medium of distance. performed by tiziana pintus /violin and hans van eck /sound projection (the schreck ensemble).

- cd2 features hans van eck's nuctemeron (2008), a spiritual voyage as described in the text of apollonius of tyana (93 ad) which serves as the basis for the performance, connected by intermissions. aspects of number symbolism, the four elements and the road to spiritual perfection have found their way into the music.

luigi nono (1924-1990)

italian avant-garde composer of classical music who remains one of the most prominent composers of the 20th century. nono studied with malipiero at the venice conservatory (1941-5) and with maderna and scherchen, both of whom orientated him towards 12-note serialism (he married schönberg's daughter nuria in 1955). his avant-garde partisanship was inseparable from a commitment to socialism, twin aspects of a revolt against bourgeois culture: hence his avoidance of normal concert genres in favour of opera and electronic music, his frequent recourse to political texts and his work in bringing music to factories. his works include the operas intolleranza 1960 (1961) and al gran sole carico d'amore (1975), the cantata il canto sospeso (1956), orchestral works and tape pieces. much of his music of the 1950s and 1960s has a fervent lyricism; later works tended to be more pessimistic (ein gespenst geht um in der welt, 1971).

the schreck ensemble

the magic of sounds is for me the most important aspect of music. the foremost goal of my compositions is to make the listener experience sounds as they are, taking him beyond the surface of the music. my musical style might be described as lyrical and colourful. the use of live electronics and soundtracks is so integrated in my way of making music that i cannot do without it. i co-founded the schreck ensemble with the late arie van schutterhoef in 1989 in order to perform music that combines the use of acoustic instruments with the new sounds offered by modern computer technology. my music is published by mcn/donemus, amsterdam.

  • dictée (1981)
  • nous sommes tous des cré basile (1983)
  • gololo-mashta (1975-1980)
october 2012 release ; ... gorgeous set of 70’s & 80’s archival electronic music from quebecois composer bernard gagnon, assembled on magnetic tape utilizing an array of the era’s more salacious gadgetry (moog modular & “vocodeur”, several of hugh lecaine’s designs, arp 2600, synclavier ii, etc.) ...

... skirting between “classicwhiz-bang synthesizer filigree, deep musique concrète ruminations, quite noisy stuck-ring-modular klang-blatt, and some rather nice linear rhythmic work (yes, i’m sure you’re all dying to ignore those first few concepts & head right for the “usabletack ; so there you have it via the sound-sample) things never stay the same for too long ... it’s interesting to hear gagnon’s work evolve through this particular era, as the rapid shifts in technology (straight analogue through purely digital constructions in only a few short years) contribute heavily to the complexity & elegance of his work ...

... gorgeous recordin both sound & vision, coated in vintage typography & some rather apropos collages (from the hands of “félix ”) ; highly recommended !!!

tnzr052: bernard gagnon, musique électronique (1975-1983)

tnzr052 contains seven unreleased tracks by montreal-born bernard gagnon. all music was composed at the electronic music studio (ems) of mcgill university. equipment used on these recordings: arp 2600, bass, clarinet, drums, guitar, magnetic tape recorders, moog modular synthesizer, synclavier ii, vocoder and a series of instruments designed by hugh le caine.

born in 1953, bernard gagnon is a product of quebec’s late 1960s underground music scene. in 1973, the montreal-based musician turned to music theory, studied with iannis xenakis and met john cage. that year, his band mergélèpe-guorismogue joined montreal’s atelier de musique expérimentale (ame), an organization created by raymond gervais, michel di torre, yves bouliane and robert m. lepage to promote improvised music. two years later, gagnon began experimenting with electronic sounds as a member of kevin austin’s metamusic.

at the turn of the decade, he studied under alcides lanza, mariano etkin and paul pedersen. it is then that he composed and recorded his first electroacoustic pieces using the electronic music studio at mcgill university. in 1981, he was awarded both the capac hugh le caine award and radio-canada’s prix national de composition électro-acoustique. gagnon then joined cham pang, a multimedia electro collective, and reconnected with lepage with whom he recorded and performed. the 1980s saw gagnon turn to musique actuelle explorations which culminated with groups such as stylo (with lepage and jean derome) and la flore laurentienne (lepage, derome and guillaume dostaler among others).

october 2012 release ; ... immaculate collection of hitherto unreleased magic from the duo of percussionist darren harris & guitarist graham lambkin (later aided by electronicist tim goss) active for but a brief decade-long blip (1993-2003) ...

... hard to understate the sudden relevance of this music (which, you can’t argue, has been gaining in zeal, zeitgeist-like, across the board over the past year ... can’t even recall how many hushed, late-night conversations i’ve had w/ folks over their recent discovery of this particular canon) ; trapped in a high tower with neither the drug-addled wastoid-isms of their siltbreeze-era peers (preferring the “men of letters” spec to a crumbling, post royal trux one) nor an easily streamlined accessibility (in truth the two / three have gone to great lengths to obfuscate even the who / what / why / how of this music, choosing a path that is neither straight, nor narrow ... even clearly outlined with signage, or even a well-lit treadway) ...

... ultimately that, of course, is why this is all so special ; there’s literally nothing else on earth that sounds anything like it (and with a spec so individualized & brazen as to defy comparison / cloning attempts) ; while this isn’t exactly the rosetta stone of the band’s recorded oeuvre, it does offer a fly-on-the-wall’s vantage point of the key eras in their existence, dealing a könig’s lösegeld in alternate-realities & thumb-nosed parallels to their “studio” ... “work” ...

... comes in a big gatefold with tons of great photos & a nice big poster (that’s mms logistics officer geomul straitharn showing off his cloud-chamber bowls) ; needless to say, but this is one of the major archival projects of the year, with superbly remastered audio (thanks to the ever-on-it jason lescalleet) only serving to highlight the clarity of sound & vision offered herein ... highly recommended !!!

remains unchanged is the long-time-coming archival overview of the shadow ring. spanning the full decade of their existence, remains unchanged offers an alternate account of the group's labor, told through 20 never-before-heard tracks. from the lumbering monotony of 1993's squawk with me, to the funereal glory of 2003's and what if, remains unchanged grants the listener rare access to the secret history of cheriton's greatest underground export.

mastered from the original tapes by jason lescalleet, remains unchanged arrives in a full color high gloss gatefold sleeve, with fold-out wall poster in an edition of 1000 copies.

october 2012 release ; ... ultra-deluxe reissue (gatefold lp sleeve hides a bonus 7” single & a cd version) of holger hiller, thomas fehlmann, et.al’s debut album as palais schaumburg ...
bureau b press release...

palais schaumburg
2-lp (180g) + cd + bonus 7
release date: october 12th, 2012

the influential german band palais schaumburg has reunited in the classic lineup. since its release in 1981, their debut album has remained in a league of its own: fleet-footed and peculiar, abstract and pop, amateurish and savvy, it showed real alternatives to the then-pervasive crude search for identity found in the "new german wave". the band, which consisted entirely of divergent personalities, has reunited in this formation to rediscover their common ground, further develop, and to perform live.

their few recent live concerts in berlin, cologne, and tokyo were met with rapturous reception – and not only from those in their own age group. in this post-sampling era, with the current, dynamic changes in the creation and reception of music, their statement has lost none of its fascination. anyone who sees and hears the combination of idiosyncratic bass riffs (blunck), bizarre yet catchy rhythms (hertwig, blunck), fehlmann's shrill horn and synthesizer fanfares, and hiller's seemingly atonal staccato guitar work and oblique lyrical conglomerates, will immediately comprehend the influence of this band.

therefore, we are very pleased to reissue the important original works of palais schaumburg in an appropriate and extended format. what do we mean by that? well, in addition to the actual album, this reissue includes a second cd / lp containing all the pieces that the band recorded prior to their debut album (all of them now for the first time on cd), and a previously unreleased recording of a concert in holland. the limited edition 180 gram vinyl double lp additionally contains a single with four tracks from a concert in hamburg where people from the audience – among them andreas dorau – perform their own versions accompanied by the band. a lavish booklet includes rare photographs and liner notes by chris bohn, editor of the british music magazine "the wire".

palais schaumburga brief history:

in 1980, two students met at the hamburg art academy: thomas fehlmann, who appreciated art and music and wanted to connect them, and the musician holger hiller, who had escaped the fractious hamburg alternative scene, preferring the art school's conservatory of music.

the spirit of the early new german wave blew through the country, the first independent labels vied for innovative artists, and the west german post-punk scene began to take shape. hiller and fehlmann brought in fm einheit (from the band abwärts) on drums and the californian chris lunch on bass. but only shortly after the first single, with timo blunck's bass riffs and the adept drumming of ralf hertwig, did the band establish its classic lineup.

palais schaumburg played numerous gigs in this lineup and recorded a second single (telefon) – then on the indie label zick zack. the recording of the album was enhanced by the british producer david cunningham (flying lizards). soon the music giant phonogram came along waving a contract. though it was predictable that the album would not exactly be a commercial success, its special position in german pop music soon became clear. the attention the album received was considerable, given the "awkwardness" of the music. even abroad, the qualities of the quartet did not go amiss, especially in the netherlands and great britain. these days, alongside to the central works of the famous krautrock bands, it is one of the most sought-after albums of german avant-garde music internationally.

a printed english translation of the lyrics perhaps contributed to album's high profile abroad, as certainly did the appearance of the band: with shaved-up necks, side partings and traditional german jackets, palais schaumburg took a stance against the clothing habits of the punks on the one hand, and the peace movement on the other, toying provocatively with supposedly ur-germanic symbols and meanings. the intention was not merely to be acoustically "different."

2012

release date: october 6th.

sympathy nervous is the project of japanese artist yosihumi niinuma. influenced by both classical and krautrock, he began recording in 1979, and released several records on the highly coveted vanity label. he continued to record and self-release much of his work throughout the 80s and 90s. his sound is intelligent and probably the most unique minimal synth to come out of japan. exploring dystopian themes, his music is well balanced and beautifully recorded.

the plastic love album features songs yosihumi niinuma recorded between 1979-1980. these were originally recorded as studio demos and have never been released until now. the album is a follow up to automaticism, which we released last year as benefit record to help niinuma cope with the loss of his home and studio after the great east japan earthquake of march 2011. stylistically, these particular songs range from proto-techno tracks like “anatawa suguni(1980) to post-punk ones like “untitled 1(1979) to a pure synthpop masterpiece from 1980 called “butoubyou no syounen” featuring his wife on vocals.

the record is printed in the same style as automaticsm (on a heavy clear sleeve) and pressed on 180 gram white vinyl. cover art by gustavo eandi in collaboration with veronica vasicka.

gus coma - color him coma (pd 27)

2cd with 8 page poster booklet
total time 2hr 22:44
cover by clive graham, poster by gus coma
released 2011

the first cd in this set is a reissue of an obscure cassette release from 1983 that was originally released in a small edition on the london based, it’s war boys label. this c60 consisted of 2 distinct halves. side 1 was formed around several mixes of an experimental track, constructed from a room-sized 24 track loop. a version of this track first appeared on the lp flagellation by the just measurers (who were c. d. greyt, yakkö banovic and narki brillans).

side 2 is a collage of mostly unused (and some remixed), excerpts from what became the title track of the milk from cheltenham lp, triptych of poisoners. this lp track consisted of a tape collage of the live mixdown of 17 cassette recordings of locked record grooves, simultaneously, with stray radio and an infernal matchbox. the full milk lp is now available on cd via alga marghen. both these lps were also originally it’s war boys projects.

as with other releases by these guys nobody worked under the same name twice, but if you are familiar with their soundworld then there will be no mystery, only astonishment. nearly all the session material here was engineered by chris grey, best known for his work with the homosexuals.

no production master was ever found for cd1, so one of the actual cassette edition had to be used in its place. however, whilst looking through the archive for the master tape, an alternative version of the tape was found, which although it followed a similar blueprint to cd1 it also contained some very different music, some primitive disco drum programming, and a somewhat more sophisticated sound quality. it was difficult to choose which version to release, so both versions appear here, but at the generous price of a single cd.

each cd also contains an additional much longer bonus track at the end that was originally intended as working material for the unfinished milk from cheltenham lp 2.

the guest musicians on this cd set are many and varied, but it’s all put together by gus coma, lepke b’s dwarfish cousin, who renounced show-biz to work as a heavy goods vehicle driver. all in, the material here is the strangest and most experimental music to come from the it’s war boys scene. expect gigantic tape loop symphonies, sundry plunderphonics, lo- fi sparks and the voice of jfk, a william burroughs interview (on one track), and a worn out teach yourself english tape. color him coma !

pinkcourtesyphone is an echo of an unfamiliar voice.
pinkcourtesyphone remembers two things you hold up to your face as a conduit to forgotten love
pinkcourtesyphone permeates like a syrup-y dream.
pinkcourtesyphone is many things from many places.
pinkcourtesyphone is elegant and detached.

this is the second full length call from the pinkcourtesyphone-line; a loquacious interlude on beauty, place, and obsession. the callers voice whispers a wistful yet false love-letter to the cinema of aesthetics from a distant place concerning the things you did... and things you need to have done.

about richard chartier

richard chartier (b.1971), sound and installation artist, is considered one of the key figures in the current of reductionist electronic sound art which has been termed both “microsound” and neo-modernist. chartier’s minimalist digital work explores the inter-relationships between the spatial nature of sound, silence, focus, perception and the act of listening itself.

chartier has previously published two works with room40.

erikm - transfall (cd)
rm449
room40

erikm’s transfall is a document of profound gesture. a collection of works that resolve his recent explorations into music and sound for performance, dance and theatre.

for almost two decades, erikm has been a major force in contemporary musique concréte. he is a compelling improviser and forthright composer whose work taps into the central linage of sound-object oriented composition emanating from france. developing a highly personal performance and compositional language, erikm’s reputation and position within the emergent generation of concréte composers had led to numerous collaborations with icons such as luc ferrari (room40 issued les protorythmiques in 2007).

transfall is an archive of six works linked through new developments in erikm’s compositional philosophies.

he notes:

the time spent on the composition of some of these pieces gave me the possibility to ‘break out’, that is to get out of my usual processes of ‘degeneration / generation’ of a body or of a multiplicity of ‘pre-existing sound objects. thus my gesture shifted, i have looked for and recorded my own sound materials.

when heard collectively, these compositions take on a presence much more than the sum of their parts. they collect unconventional approaches from an artist whose compositional methodologies are already deeply rooted in experimental traditions. the resulting pieces, and the album as a whole, represent one of erikm’s most personal and resolved works to date. a vision of future explorations mounted within a frame of the artists’ previous sonic understandings.

room40

for their second major recording project host, australian sound artists anthea caddy and thembi soddell rigorously shape aural representations of physical environments to express psychological experience.

recorded in scientifically controlled spaces and unpredictable natural and man-made environments, sampler and cello interact to generate acoustically opposing atmospheres.

interwoven with abstracted found sounds, instrument and environment merge to create a dynamic interplay between physical reality, sensory perception and psychological interpretation. host presents an edition of tense electroacoustic compositions that define new, dense, and sonically detailed environments that highlight and shadow the interaction between human psyche and the physical world.

biography
anthea caddy and thembi soddell have been said to be a “formidable duo” that “deliver a strong and convincing product.” since the release of their first collaborative album, iland, in 2006, they have been commissioned for a number of multichannel concert presentations and gallery installations (immersion, melbourne 2008; westspace gallery, melbourne 2009; parisonic festival, paris, 2011) ; performed internationally at venues and festivals such as instants chavirés (paris), cave 12 (geneva), vibra @ occc (valencia), café oto (london), la malterie (lille), worm (rotterdam), hörkunstfestival (erlangen), and biegungen festival (berlin) ; and regularly participate in major australian experimental music festivals such as liquid architecture and the now now. their work is also discussed in the book experimental music: audio explorations in australia, published by unsw press in 2008.

andrea belfi - wege (cd)
rm446
room40

wege translates as ‘path’ and it’s a fitting title for the latest rendering from master percussionist and experimental composer andrea belfi. the albums’ four pieces act as orientation points through some imaginary sonic landscape.

wege is belfi’s fourth lp (the first with room40), and stems entirely from compositions completed at two artist-in-residence projects in austria (hotel pupik) and in brussels (q-o2 werkplatz). the album is built around a cyclic electro-acoustic system, through which belfi has developed a complex musical network of possibilities.

with this electro-acoustic system, influenced in part by steve reich’s ‘pendulum music’, wege’s four pieces revolve around spiraling interconnections of synthesizer, feedback and drums.

belfi explains further:

this device creates feedbacks on two drums on my drum kit, and i can modify it by stopping and stretching the drum skins with hands and various kinds of sticks, mallets and brushes, and/or by filtering the feedback with an a modular synthesizer.

edited in a quiet apartment in greifswald (germany) a small town on the baltic sea, the record bears marks of the stillness of the surroundings in which it was finalised. there is a sense of hushed awe and a subtle reference to the wind swept coldness of the landscape in these pieces.

wege is mastered and mixed by giuseppe ielasi.

alt07: richard youngs - rurtain

at this point in time richard youngs should need no introduction. through his vast discography (spanning over twenty years), he has created a fascinating body of work which has found a home on labels such as forced exposure, vhf, jagjaguar and his own no fans imprint. like all great artists, richard’s work is hard to pin down and continues to evolve, mutate, and blossom into new forms, whilst at the same time bearing a unique characteristic that lets you know it could be by no-one else.

split into two parts, “rurtain” is a new electronic piece which picks up from where the “core to the bravelp on root strata left off, but taking a more abstract road into something more skeletal and strange.

in the first part, broken beats cluster around minimal hits of percussion and wordless vocals that sound like they’re trapped in a vacuum, evoking a slightly unsettling atmosphere. things become a little more celebratory in the second part with the addition of some very erratic organ playing, giving an ecstatic and almost ‘free-jazz’ feel to the piece. the b-side features three very different interpretations of richard’s originals by neil campbell (astral social club), john clyde-evans and daniel lopatin (oneohtrix point never). neil’s version expands the organ of the second piece into a huge kaleidoscopic drone, whilst john hones in on the woodblock and percussion to make something more metallic and abrupt. finally daniel lopatin closes the lp grandly by adding violent stabs of digital synth and melancholic guitar playing to richard’s voice, almost creating a kind of futuristic ballad.

five tracks of unclassifiable electronics, limited to 300 copies. recorded by richard youngs, neil campbell, john clyde-evans and daniel lopatin in glasgow, yorkshire and new york, 2011 - 2012. mastered by john hannon at no recording studio and cut by rashad becker at dubplates & mastering.

alt06.5: élg - mil pluton

élg is laurent gerard. since 2000 élg has made a name for himself in the experimental underground performing solo in venues across europe and the usa and also in the trio reines d’angleterre with jo tanz and ghedalia tazartes. over the years he has built a complex body of work which has been spread amongst reputable labels such as kraak, ss, lal lal lal, taped sounds and nashazphone.

now, four years since his debut ‘tout ploie’, alter and hundebiss present ‘mil pluton’, the second élg album on vinyl. in that time gerard has knuckled down with a bunch of new gear and built a fresh sound which is difficult to categorize but still carries many of the characteristics of his previous work. one can hear ebm-esque rhythms, scalpel-sharp musique concréte style editing, dense layers of swampy electronics which open up the same hypnotic spirals that the élg of old did, but it’s laurent’s unique approach to songwriting and composition vocally, élg has evolved beyond conventional language and now works with an esperanto-like form of alien linguistics to front the sonic mass.

if your musical interests sit within the realm of outer limits electronics and have been drawn towards the work of throbbing gristle, bernard szajner, coil and tazartes then look no further. ‘mil pluton’ also features musical contributions from jo tanz, jean-philippe gross, bill kouligas (pan), tg gondard and jan anderzen (tomutonttu / kemialliset ystavat).

all tracks were composed, record and mixed by élg in brussels in 2011, then mastered and cut by rashad becker at dubplates & mastering in berlin in december of that same year, and pressed lovingly onto 150g vinyl by alter and hundebiss in september 2012.

all tracks are one-take recordings. there are no over-dubs. small edits have been made to correct midi errors.

cover: anne de vries "steps of recursion"
typesetting and layout by lorenzo senni

quantum jelly’ is the cracking new release in senni’s ever busy schedule.

a record deeply influenced by his love of 90’s trance / hard-trance music and a growing interest of the musical structures and sound archetypes of this genres. taking the most obvious characteristics of this kind of music (spoon fed with supersaws, build-ups of several minutes and over-the-top-instant-gratification melodies) senni worls with these in relation to his own background in experimental and noise culture. creating tracks with just one simple idea and forcing it into a typical "non-build-up", a sonic spiral of repetitive and percussive arpeggiated melodies.

using the idea of the "buildup" as a starting point to make a non-uplifting track that implicitly preserves its emotional tension and drama.

catching net is a collection of selected installations and compositions eli keszler created during the last two years. the double-cd set includes both stand-alone recordings of the installations and the integrated ensemble scores performed in conjunction with those installations. the first disc features two ensemble versions of cold pin, previously released in a 2011 lp of the same title on pan, plus a 26-minute, previously unreleased live ensemble recording (mixed sextet and piano quintet; these are captured in contrasting acoustical spaces).

the second disc begins with the title track, catching net, a 17-minute score for string quartet and piano with the cold pin installation. the score is fully notated, timed with stopwatch markings rather than tempo or meter. following are two recordings of keszler’s large-scale installations functioning on their own. collecting basin features piano strings / wires up to 250 feet long splayed from a two-story water tower in shreveport / louisiana, across two large, empty water purification basins, which acted as an amplifier for the sounds produced by the installation. a ‘solo’ version of cold pin (without live performers) concludes the album. tracks 1 and 3 on the first disc and track 2 on the second disc were recorded at the historic cyclorama, a massive dome at the boston center for the arts. cold pin was installed directly on a large curved wall in the dome, using micro-controlled motors and beaters to strike extended strings ranging in length from three to 25 feet.

born in brookline, massachusetts, visionary composer / percussionist / multimedia artist eli keszler began playing drums at eight, and composing at twelve. before finding an interest in experimental music and improvisation, he played in rock and hardcore bands; his work retains an intense physicality and churning, often ferocious energy. he is a graduate of the new england conservatory, where he studied composition with anthony coleman and ran blake. a self-taught visual artist, his aesthetic outlook owes as much to richard serra and robert smithson as it does to musical icons like xenakis, nancarrow, and ornette coleman. he has collaborated with phill niblock, roscoe mitchell, joe mcphee, loren connors, jandek, and many others, and has recorded more than a dozen cds and lps for esp-disk, rel, and pan.

keszler’s installations employ piano wires of varying lengths; these are struck, scraped, and vibrated by microprocessor-controlled motorized arms, giving rise to harmonically complex tones that are percussive yet resonant. these installations are heard on their own and with accompanying ensemble scores. said keszler in a npr all songs considered interview, “i like to work with raw material, like simple sounds, primitive or very old sounds; sounds that won't get dated in any way. i was thinking of ways i could use strings or acoustic material without using pedals or pre-recordings, so the live aspects appealed to me.” in addition, the patterns formed by the overlapping piano wires allow keszler to create visual components that relate directly to the music, without having to use projections or other electronic equipment.

the 2xcd is mastered by rashad becker at clunk, in a limited edition of 1000 copies. it is packaged in a pro-press digisleeve jacket which itself is housed in a silk screened pvc sleeve with extensive images from the installations, program notes, sketches of the installations, scores, electronic schematics from the projects, and accompanying drawings and artwork by eli keszler and bill kouligas.

pro style” by pete swanson

more frazzled technoid variations from ex-yellow swan pete swanson.

since upsetting the techno multiverse with man with potential, ex-yellow swan pete swanson has tirelessly continued his exploration of the form, quickly breaking it down and molding it in his image. pro style is the result of those experiments, and finds swanson at his most explosive, with his archetypal searing synthesizer blasts directed over warehouse kicks worthy of the downwards catalog. this is possibly swanson's most technoid investigation to date, but any "mainstream" form is peppered with more than enough failure to put a smile on the faces of unconvinced yellow swans fans. pro style is far from berlin's precise minimalism, instead taking a raw, hands-on direction that we haven't heard in the genre for many years. whether you're in the club or in the basement, swanson's pounding kicks and (surprisingly) booming basses should keep the apocalypse at bay, for now at least.

nna050: matt carlsonall moments” lp

nna is proud to present our 50th release, matt carlson’s “all momentslong-playing record. where 2011 s “particle language lp acted as a study in texture and density within experimental synthesizer music, “all moments” finds carlson engaging with the more traditional musical materials of melody, harmony, and rhythm, calling to mind his work as one half of portland, or duo golden retriever. the pieces on this record range from shorter pop études to longer, more open improvisatory synth studies, retaining a sense of playfulness and expressiveness within a highly focused and calculated framework.

recorded to four-track cassette and primarily hand-played with very little-to-no auto arpeggiation, “all moments” captures an often-overlooked warmth and human quality in electronic music, emphasized further by carlson’s use of modal and tonal vocal studies, electronically transformed by his use of the vocoder. the result is a well-rounded collection of colorful, exuberant electronic music.

nna048: phorkdiscrepancies”c50

nna is proud to present “discrepancies”, the latest full-length from the people’s higher order of royal kinship. neal reinalda has created a highly unique strain of surrealist techno collage using a high brow palette of sound that borrows not only from traditional electronic dance music, but also from another place entirely… sounds that are perplexing as they are refreshing, familiar as they are understated. field recordings and other naturally-occurring sonics find their place comfortably amongst delicate, watery rhythms and painterly percussion, all wrapped up in a pop art sensibility.

nna047: freddy ruppertwait”c20

deviating stylistically from his previous work with former ghosts and this song is a mess and so am i, los angeles-based musician freddy ruppert has constructed a forboding collage of churning industrial soundscapes. “wait” is a highly personal collection of deliberately anti-climactic processed acoustics, from glassy piano fragments to deep, rumbling bells. while remaining bestial and dark, the sounds on “wait” retain an emotionally complex and organic energy; a calculated exercise in tension and restraint, existing intimately in a place of no resolution.

globe et dynastie cd
reines d'angeleterre

bo’ weavil is totally psyched to have the opportunity to release the second album by reines d'angleterre. this time a thoroughly studio affair. reines d’angleterre is a fascinating collaboration between avant outsider musician ghédalia tazartès and two electronic botanists, èlg and jo aka opéra mort. this lp covers more of the wild ground the band started with on “les comores” released back in 2010, but going further into a musical terrain that defies definite description … a slow trip into wizards intimacy, synthetic jungles, underseas zoos and tibetan-industrial complexes. it feels like one has stumbled into disturbing dreams from a different realm. a quality of mystery, trickery and halucinatory movements slip and shift across the recording. this is out there music, experimental music with no fixed abode with a unique quality that defies most things today.

the wild wild berry cd
stephanie hladowski & c joynes

this is the first recordings for bo’ weavil by english folk singer stephanie hladowski, coming together with regular recording artist c joynes. the wild wild berry a highly individual record, that accents both their respective styles. chrismelodic beauty is equally matched by stephanie’s turn of phrase. the album contains their renditions of eleven british traditionals, some better known than others. all the songs were mostly selected from archive recordings at cecil sharp house, and chosen on the basis of something unique about the original recording rather than the song itself. nothing about the record is a let down, the simple melodies and powerful authority that both exhibit make this a recording that one will play a thousand times over.
