may 2010 release ; out-of-seemingly-nowhere & absurdly production-value-oriented double-vinyl reissue of kevin drumm’s watershed debut full-length, replete with a newly-discovered set of era pieces released here for the first time (an entire new sidesworth of pointillist crackle !!! listen to the sound-sample for a taste) ...

regarding the music ::

... classic 1997 release, featuring “guitar”, “recorded directly to tape in fall, 1996” ...

upon its release (and even now, still, to some extent) this was a divisive title, not quite fitting in w/ the time’s reigning “lowercase” aesthetic, nor the harsh noise, metal, or digital music scenes with which kevin eventually found allegiance ... consisting instead of scrabbly figures run through an upper-threshold gate, then processed with heavy filtering and gain-based effects. there are certainly parallels between some of the harsher segments of “sheer hellish miasma” ; the final track’s 17 minutes of glacial drift hedged with at first subliminal, then overbearing dat-tape distortions reminds of some of his more recent collaborative work ...

a great album, a challenge for sure, but i’m amazed at how much more permissive we’ve all become to what was undoubtedly the most “out-there” thing any of us had ever heard back in97 ...

... comes in a (frankly, incredible looking / feeling) embossed glossy gatefold sleeve with new artwork (wax-damaged macro-images of the guitar used to ... generate this music) with two separate double-sided inserts (detailed below) ; plus, and i know this is like stroking a charged mare at this point, but the reference-quality cut c/o dubplates & mastering’s rachad becker is beyond good, revealing detail that i hadn’t even noticed in the digital 1/1 cd version ...

high praise to both c. spencer yeh for the vision to press this “un-cuttable” music to wax & peter kolovos for the epic “archival qualityrealization ... highly recommended !!!
thin wrist press release...

thin wrist recordings presents the expanded and definitive double lp edition of kevin drumm's groundbreaking first album, originally released in 1997. featuring some of the most fiercely abstract and organic guitar work ever heard, drumm's debut is both jarring and completely alien. dubbed by some as the greatest prepared guitar record ever recorded it prefigured (and continues to trump) almost an entire decade or so of contemporary "out" music that would follow. beautiful and completely essential.

this edition includes an entire fourth side of previously unreleased recordings from drumm's personal archive, all recorded in the same era as the original album. it also includes entirely new artwork featuring the body of the actual guitar used to record the album.

the album comes housed in a heavy textured gatefold jacket and includes two full color inserts. high quality 2 x 180 gram vinyl pressed at pallas germany and mastered by rashad becker at d&m berlin.

looking back at kevin through his formidably individual tunnel of works, it's hard to remember that his first official recorded statement would be caught sneaking into bed alongside history's milestones of "solo instrument improvisation." or that, in turn, it also would be caught trying to sneak out of the house built by father jazz, into a backyard that still hasn't quite been fenced off yet. those running around chicago chasing down the sound in the mid-90's should've already known about this guy and his contributions both in and out of the relative spotlight. for those far from the city winds, thankfully they might've gotten the message in the form of this missive. in the afterglow of later love letters titled “sheer hellish miasma” and “imperial distortion”, it's absolutely overdue that this first musty green postcard be dug out, polished off, and framed.

judged by its understated title, "self-titled" aka "guitar" is incredibly literal -- what you hear is what you get. in the simplest considerations, the ensuing connotations and possibilities are wide open; the real-time velocity of urgent decision and movement are wrapped in a clearly-mapped compositional endurance that continues to stand firmly in the relative spotlights of this day. no surprise then, that even all these years later, we would still be trying to figure out exactly at which table kevin should squarely sit.

they say that every kid who heard this record immediately went out and grabbed a busted guitar with a scratchy selector switch, ready to subject their friends to fuzzy pauses of amp hum. i know of at least four.

late 2009 release ; one of my favorite records of last year, finally in stock ...

... a glorious set of free-electronic guitar spray from open city / thin wrist’s peter kolovos, endlessly flitting from channel to channel, yearning for resolution yet steadfastly insisting on perpetual motion ... calling this a “bedroom guitar” session would be doing it a major disservice, as nothing here seems desultory ; each stray delay-line blast & pick-scrape lands with impeccable timing, lending a clear & conciseflow” to all recorded events ...

on top of the alien-laned music, i really can’t picture a more well-done lp edition ; this thing just has “quality” written all over it, right on down the line from the silver-plate photograph on the cover to the bulky tip-on sleeve itself, accompanying insert, and 180g rachad becker cut (seriously one of the loudest / ”beefiest” records i’ve heard in a while ; the dynamic range on this thing is staggering) ...

this is how you do it folks !!!

peter kolovos "new bodies "

everything changes (or doesn't) at exactly the right time. with such abrupt cuts from sound to sound, a lesser man could end up with a whiff of "30 genres in 29 seconds" but here each new sound relates so well to what just came before it, in a gracefully aggressive way.

 - chris corsano

music, production, design: peter kolovos
mastering: rashad becker
photography: joyce campbell

full color heavy tip-on cover
180 gram vinyl edition of 500
from los angeles, also of open cityfirst full length-- single takes, live--
intensely physical and abstract music that constantly, unpredictably shifts and evolves. impulse, memory and intent, laid bare in real time.
post-melody, post-groove sound. concrete, brutal, yes fun-----

peter kolovos, guitarist in los angeles trio open city, presents here three tracks of electric guitar improvisations. each features successively recorded left- and right-channel guitars, in which the overdub responds asynchronously to the original. while open city explored the electroacoustic interplay afforded by the two-guitar and drums line-up, in new bodies, his first solo release, kolovos lets rip with all the skronk and blurt he's been holding in for the last decade, in tiny, tightly gated segments.

his sound vocabulary is very broad, and his control of texture and timing is masterful. using equalisation, reverb, envelope shaping and volume control... he rapidly opens and closes the volume window on a dizzying series of extended guitar techniques, creating the inescapable impression of derek bailey covering the residents' duck stab. if that won't sell records, i don't know what will.

this electrifying effect is enhanced by the crisp digital recording and the superb dubplates and mastering pressing job - every clang and buzz is right up in your grill. released on kolovos's own imprint, the packaging continues the good work. the cover features a magnificent photograph of the guitarist taken by joyce campbell using the mid-19th century tin type process, which requires a sitting of over three minutes. the resulting image is as physically 'time based' as the recording it encloses, and has the distinctive look of a victorian death mask - no 'posing' or even facial expression is possible. in this regard the cover is an exact metaphor of the recording - what you perceive is exactly what you get.

this is the masterpiece of 2cds, splitting the music into improvisation (momentary composition) and / or composition.

disc 1 is the improvised music by axel, ino, imai. guitar sound of imai is hot and tingling, ino plays careful his choice pizzicato and arco exquisitely, and axel's original sound bring 'out' into their music. their atmosphere of music is special one, cannot be similar from every music.

disc 2 consists of all axel's composition. he play several tunes also on "die enttauschung" (with rudi mahall, etc) but every tunes' structure is very vivid. note drum playing by nori, who is invited to play by axel !

if jazz is survive in present day, this work is the real contemporary "jazz" today.

recorded on january 16, 1976 at nichi-futsu kaikan, tokyoconcert produced by teruto soejima, keiki midorikawa
"beyond description", 4th date of 'inspiration & power vol.2'

the original lp of this work has duo with takayanagi on a side and duo with sato on b side. but in the concert, midorikawa played duo with togashi about 40 minutes, afterward he played duo with takayanagi and with sato both about 20 minutes actually. it didn't include togashi duo on the original lp. this time doubtmusic found a tape of midorikawa - togashi duo, 2cd set convey all performance that day as a complete version. the tapes which are used on those cds are different from the original master tape, and we re-mastered them, so the quality is higher than the original lp.

midorikawa's free improvisation that playing duo with each togashi, takayanagi, sato is inventive and in consequence, each music is very beautiful. those music are prime free-jazz that quietness and intensity seem like spindrift.

we are very glad to inform that a long time out of printed off beat label lp is reprinted on cd. itaru oki visited paris, france in the 70s and when he came back to japan temporarily in '75, he organized a elite free jazz troop and recorded in studio. "phantom note" is his 3rd album, more straight, heavier and flamed out free jazz than experimental music part of his 1st "satsujin kyoshitsu (murder class)" or 2nd "shirasagi (egret)". especially, the tune called 'kodai tenmondai (ancient observatory)' which gozo yoshimasu read his poet has a vigorous voice and playing, and it will move your heart surely.

the masterpiece on '75 in japan.

'is picking perseverance'

those where especially it is impressive in the word to which takayanagi leaves 'as for picking' as for this which is perseverance are decisive thing not only the guitarist for the musician. the strength which repels the chord of the guitar with the pick, becomes the barometer of strength of that human. instantaneously is repelled with the pick which it had in the effectiveness hand, feeling of selection of sound, selection of the chord, selection, strength and the nuance of position, and selection of the most important timing everything is not decided before that and the [te] does not become. in a word decision making is the question whether the tip has been visible, whether it does. when there is perplexity somewhere, picking becomes weak. it is the same as word. the aforementioned everything being prepared, it does strong picking, inevitably as for the left hand unless you hold down securely, the chord floats. the sound where this gearing is strong is borne. the truth that 'completeness of mind the sound which it is good losing is not possible'.

as for masayuki's takayanagi which is sold excavation sound source there are times when noise has entered from jinya disc. we do the effort which is removed in the range which the case of mastering does not have hindrance in the sound source, but when it is riding in sound recording largely, we have left that way. we designate cd conversion as a record as purpose. it cuts in tune, as much as possible and/or fading out has tried not to do. this work the ending of last tune there is a noise nearby. removal of noise we would like to entrust to future someone.

may 2010 release ; inspired one-off collaboration between zaïmph’s marcia bassett & metaluxjennyj.gräf ... three sprawling, monolithic takes, rife with marcia’s buzzsaw guitar-spray, jenny’s careening electronics & vocals, and tons of effects & processing (including some lovely backwards-masking ; listen to the sound-sample for a taste) yielding a fine smear of gained sound, nestled somewhere between “doom” conventions, electro-acoustic improv, and “noise(there’s even a “folky” track in the middle that wouldn’t be out of place on a charalambides record) ...

m. bassett / j. gräf "peradam" cd

in rene daumal's mount analogue, a peradam is described as a clear and extremely hard stone, a true crystal. it is so transparent that it is nearly impossible to see. to discover a peradam was always the result of an inner act. at said moment in time, the stone's brilliance might catch the eye of one who seeks the truth. most peradams were found on the rough and dangerous trails up the mountain.

peradam is the result of marcia bassett (zaimph, hototogisu) and jenny gräf (harrius, metalux) collaborating to map the arrival of their music. the three recordings on display reveal grainy, melodic vocal expressions combined with ritualistic, slow-burning noise and both women's belief in mysterious creativity.

may 2010 release ; ... over the past few years rm74’s reto mäder has really come into his own as a composer / producer, issuing increasingly detailed & nuanced work for domizil, hinterzimmer, crouton, and utech ... this set, mixing up-close guitar experiments with azimuth-leaning spectral drone compositions, might just be his best thusfar, with a continuous, cascading array of “composed” material that’s just as comfortable steadily building over a 10-minute stretch into a tonal climax as it is restlessly flitting from sound to sound in a more active manner ... very nice stuff !!!

rm74 "reflex" cd

reflex is the fifth solo album by switzerland's reto mäder (ural umbo, sum of r, pendulum nisum) as rm74. a creepy, paranoid record of sinister melody and complex structure. electronics, organ, synthesizer, guitars and other instrumentation drifts in and out of bizarre atmospherics. the tracks gain emotional resonance as they move among vexing swells of dense, rotting psychedelia.

presented in a heavy matte sleeve printed with dark metallic ink. includes fold out insert. photograph by phillip nesmith. edition of 500.

ehnahrealpha/omega” long playing record

  • leda and the swan

  • the second coming
click the play button to hear an excerpt of "leda and the swan"
march 2010 release ; essentially a “tour-only” lp (for a tour that didn’t actually happen, even) from undoubtedly the greater boston area’s leading serialist black metal group (yes, that means exactly what it implies ; the riffs are all 12-tone rows) with a revolving lineup here featuring all-star free-trumpeter greg kelley, semata’s ricardo donoso, ryan mcguire, and many others from our fruitful crossover metal / experimental music scene(s), all heard over the two side-length pieces here setting two yeats poems to music (!?) ...

comes in a hand-screened sleeve with two inserts ; one with the appointed yeats texts, and, inexplicably, one with a cy twombly print on one side & credits on the other (now that i think of it ; twombly metal beats serialist metal any day) in a hand-numbered edition of 100 ; these will most likely be gone (i.e. banished from the earth of regular, music-loving folks like you or i to the sulfurous underground realm of “the collectors”) before you can utter the words “private metal” ...
fun with asbestos press release...

boston based avant black/death/doom metal band ehnahre follow up their debut record “the man closing up” with their new 12" record, entitled “alpha/omega.”

with 2009 seeing the addition of drummer/noise artist/wacko ricardo donoso, ehnahre plumbed even further into the depths of rhythmic flux and sway which characterized their debut release.  this record sees ehnahre starting to stretch out, and progress beyond their beginnings- more extremes, more chaos, more discordant guitar lines, and vocals akin to the outburst of a bloodthirsty, drunken schizophrenic. “alpha/omega”  was written based on the poems “leda and the swan” and “the second coming” by irish writer william butler yeats. utilizing mythological, mystical, and religious themes, the text alludes to the beginning of the world, and armageddon. taking their ugly, atonal and oppressive sound to new lows of stifling darkness and malevolence, the uncompromising dissonance and instability on this record will salt the earth with ehnahre’s aural depravity.

ehnahre is releasing “alpha/omega” on fun with asbestos records, in a limited run (100 copies), exclusively on 12” vinylblack on black record, with hand printed jackets. mastered by james plotkin, released march 1st, 2010.

extremely recent collaboration between julian gulyas (synaptic foliage, amazing births) and adam miller (isle of sodor). the result of an all-night session on the insane synths at my friend's college. extremely harrowing zones with an inevitably vintage vibe. two awkward dudes, full of pizza and jamming arp 2500 and 2600s, an electrocomp 101 and an eml 400. overwhelming array of sounds. what i imagine noticing a crack in your space helmet would feel like.

may 2010 release ; couldn’t resist stocking these two titles on james ferraro’s new-ish muscleworks inc. imprint (alarmists - before you start in, i just want you to know that these were actually produced & manufactured by the highly responsible todd ledford, he of olde english spelling bee - the stray tray-loads i attempted all revealed that, yes, the discs do actually have music on them !!!) ...

from the pro-airbrushed cover art (word has it - especially commissioned for this release) it should be clear where james’ head is at this week ; back in the mid-80s early-saturday-morning television zone, with layers of travelling console video game squawk & lo-bit keyboard sampler grankle dotting the proceedings throughout ...

again, pro-duped, printed discs in those tacky “cheap chinatown cd cases” that everyone loves these days, with a neat little “jukebox” insert taped inside ... an impressively garish sight / sound simulacrum ...

march 2010 release ; gorgeous, european double-lp gatefold reissue of this oft whispered-about side ::

... purportedly recorded in india in 1982, the 10 morning-to-night ragas here were programmed, step-time style, into the era’s flagship xox boxes - the (then) maligned tb-303bass line” and tr-808rhythm composer”, then embellished with stray jupiter-8 flourish ... the results are mind-bottling ; mr. singh’s insanely prescient stylings (as mentioned elsewhere ad infinitum, predating phuture’s trax-label debut by a good 5 years) owe much to italo-germanic-disco’s production conceits, sure, but his frankly, awesome keyboard-solo abilities are up there with east-leaning minimalists like terry riley et.al & the levels of sheer looping repetition bring this much closer to mesmerizing pulse of the “privatesynth / library-music universe’s era recordings than anything from the moogsploitation camp ...

ultra-deluxe gatefold presents the album in chronological / conceptual order, with the first lp offering 6 tracks (3 per side) @ 33.3~, then the second the remaining 4 (2 per side) @ 45 (presumably for club / venue / outdoor p.a. applications) ... note to world ; i want to hear this music being played in every idiotic cafe, trend-jumping fashion boutique, between sets at everyironicwilliamsburg venue-dump, every pbr-stocked “rent party”, etc ... all summer, everywhere, non-stop (after which we can all take a short break) ... highly recommended !!!

synthesizing – ten ragas to a disco beat
by charanjit singh (india, 1982)

until recently it wasn’t much more than some rumours on the web: a 1982 released lp called ten ragas to a disco beat containing kraftwerk-like acid house music, years before the genre was invented.

so it turns out, the record was no rumour. only a few hundred copies of the lp were ever pressed, and only a handful seem to have survived. moreover, the lp outdoes all expectations. performed on the synths that would later define acid house, the roland tb-303 and tr-808, the album sounds light years ahead of its time with its repetitive beats and hypnotic electronic melodies. its maker, bollywood session musician charanjit singh, set out to translate ancient indian classical ragas to the modern synthesizer and in doing so seems to have invented house music along the way. the 10 tracks make a consistent listen from a to z. its restrained minimalism and lack of cheesiness makes it incredibly contemporary, sounding animated, fluid and unabashedly alive.
