before reading the libretto below, i was half-expecting a “travelogue” style piece (ala the “east-west news” compositions) but this is much closer to the pulsing, long-form poly-rhythmic drone-flourish of pieces such as jean-claude eloy’s “shanti” & even some of roland kayn’s 70s work ... highly recommended !!!

alga marghen proudly presents the first record edition ever by brunhild meyer-ferrari, a very refined and talented german composer, wife of luc ferrari with whom she collaborated for over 40 years in creating some of the most beautiful sound works ever created in the past decades.

first there was "et tournent les sons dans la garrigue" that luc ferrari composed in 1977 before "exercises d’improvisation" in the same year (a previous unreleased work, soon to be issued on the planam label). these two pieces "...conceived for individual or collective improvisation for any instrument or instrumental group..." are based on identical sound elements. "exercises d’improvisation" consists of a sequence of 7 separate tapes, while for "et tournent les sons dans la garrigue" luc ferrari mixed these tapes into one. listening to the separate tapes brunhild meyer-ferrari felt the irresistible desire to compose a new piece using ad libitum five of these seven tapes.

as she remarked: "impatiences represents for me those high-pitched rhythmic sounds, those imperturbable wriggling interfering with the low rhythms which are falsely quiet, because each of them is submitted to different and contradictory rhythms. i wished these to be perturbing enough to make the physical balance stagger by fractions of seconds".

edition limited to 300 copies, issued by alga marghen to celebrate the "oeuvres sonores 3" event conceived in collaboration with the new media department of centre pompidou and la mason rouge, fondation antoine de galbert in paris. this lp is the third in the "oeuvres sonores" series after the now sold out charlemagne palestine "sound i" lp and luc ferrari "danse" lp.

digiv021: ossining "i will be missed" lp

fresh from the sunny cascades that split the mountains into pieces, the duo of brad rose (altar eagle, the north sea, etc) and kevin danchisko (sovetskaya gone) rip into the bliss that drips from synthetic space nebulae. "i will be missed" is the first vinyl release following up a handful of cassettes. with nods to '60s americana via laced cocktails and theoretical academic roots, ossining takes this drag race to the moon.

"i will be missed" collects three synth-driven underwater vision quests. crystal sequences are force-fed through strings of filters resulting in flourescent, smoldering towers of muddy ambience. the idea is to make something inherently beautiful that sucks the air from your lungs resulting in a wobbly, unclear treatise. with the cracks smoothed over, each sharp jolt takes on a life of its own turning up the temperature and morphing into a pure white heaven. it's all hands-on-deck if you don't want to get dropped into the boiling seas below.

the flipside brings the lightshow to its peak, taking things positively solar. backed by walls of bloop-infested waters and arpeggiated madness, the duo let the vocals fly. each run through exudes an underlying tension searching for any hole to escape. as melodies loop and feedback on top of each other, the beginnings are consumed by the ends. nothing is left to chance and nobody is hoping for perfection. in the end, ossining deliver two sides of silver-soaked dreams blasted in a holographic glow. mad men, the lot of them.

vinyl only edition of 222 copies (we doubled the pressing due to heavier-than-expected interest). silkscreened covers (by vgk).

june 2010 release ; ... a few years back while on tour in france, my host played me the gary kail / zurich 1916 “creative nihilism” double lp (iridescence, 1984) with which i was immediately smitten (i’ve yet to track it down at anywhere near a reasonable price) ... it’s a sprawling collection of “punk” tape music, steeped in the iron glow of “metal machine music” & featuring input from later players like brad laner, carla bozulich, and the like, all recorded under the auspices of anti guitarist gary “whatever” kail ...

right around the same time as he was architecting said lp, gary did a bit of “solo electronic music” ; all collected here & issued for the first time since the 1984 micro-cassette edition (the one damned with faint praise by tim yohannan below) ... listening to this with contemporary ears / sensibilities in place, it’s clear that this should be seen as much more than a one-off weekend “out” sesh ; the opening track’s endless moog-drone, guitar scrape, & reverb-tank bash predate sunn o)))’s similarly aligned tracks by a coupla decades - and while the straight reich / anders-persson plunderphonic voice-phasing of “they should leave” is what it is, the noise-guitar shrapnel of “backward motion” sounds like a west coast hardcore variant on allan bryant’s “space guitars” & the closing track’s alarm-call electronics & stream-of-consciousness echo-tank ruminations are exactly the sort of thing i have dreams about finding ...

nicely-produced cd-r edition ; comes in a flat-black joule with a sticker affixed to the front ; liner card inside, stickered-on discface ; highly recommended !!!

"man leaving harbor on a ship (in a room)" is the title of a sound installation (for record player, vinyl record, speakers, found photograph, steel wires) by vittorio santoro to be presented in june 2010 at la bf15 contemporary art space in lyon.

for the art installation of this sound piece, side a of the lp record (titled "commencement") is played over and over for a whole day. the organizers will take care that the side b (titled "conclusion") is played back only the next day.

in "commencement" the french sound poet, artist and composer franck leibovici reads a fragment from the article "das narrenschiff als aufklaerer" by gerhard stadelmaier, published on january 18th, 2009 on the german newspaper frankfurter allgemeine zeitung.

"conclusion" features a reading by the well-known french artist pierre leguillon.

recorded in paris in march and april 2010, conceived and edited by vittorio santoro. the silences at the beginning and at the end of each side are integral parts of the sound work. the silence had been recorded in paris in the night between april 8th and 9th, 2010.

edition limited to 125 numbered copies. the first 5 copies (numbered 1/125 to 5/125) are reserved for the 5 installation pieces, while the remaining 120 copies have been produced for the private use of the artists. only a handful of copies available for private distribution through the alga marghen newtork.

chuck bettis, raised in the fertile hardcore soil, nourished within baltimore's enigmatic avant garde gatherings, blossoming in ny's downtown musical tribe. past projects include metamatics, all scars, trance and the arcade. he has also appeared on recordings with ikue mori, nautical almanac, yellow swans, measles mumps rubella, toshio kajiwara, carlos giffoni. has played live with john zorn, fred frith, jamie saft and afrirampo to name a few. current projects include brown wing overdrive (electronic duo of bettis and derek morton), mudang rouge (quintet with jerry lim, evan rapport, josh blair), period (quintent with mike pride, charlie looker, darius jones), chatterblip (laptop & voice duo with dafna naphtali) and hell hoarse (duo with brendan murray).

brendan murray is a self-taught musician living in somerville, ma. murray began playing music as a rock drummer, but has been working as a solo electronic-music composer since 1999. early compositions were made using little more than phrase samplers, but has since added analog synths, digital software, and (most recently) guitar to his vocabulary. murray regards his music as a balance between spontaneous sound making and compositional rigor, with an emphasis on drones and repetition. he records and processes instruments and tapes until all traces of instrumentality are blurred, leaving only large blocks of pure sound. he is actively involved with long distance collaborations with musicians and sound artists such as seth nehil (as the duo sillage), richard garet and chuck bettis (as the duo hell hoarse). he is also a founding member of the group ouest, with longtime friends and collaborators jay sullivan and howard stelzer. other activities include playing drums and guitar in the rock band paper summer, composing music for ?lm and occasionally presenting a concert series in the boston area.

to mark the occasion of their uk tour, alter is proud to present this vinyl pairing of finland's tomutonttu (kemialliset ystavat's jan anderzen), and new york's oneohtrix point never (daniel lopatin). both artists contribute two new tracks that, whilst being sonically different from each another, create a unique synthesis formed from a diy approach to electronic music, which makes this pairing both logical and inevitable.

tomutonttu's "likaiset pilvet" sees anderzen diving deep into his archives, and re-emerging with something new after a heavy editing session. the track kicks off with some fragmented electronics, bringing to mind an image of a dozen bernard parmegiani records all melting in unison. the second half sees a shift in pace and a more playful atmosphere, introducing elements such as rhythmic loops and other scattered sounds that, as a whole, bear similarities to eric copeland's recent output.

opn's "wayland lincoln border" is a continuation of lopatin's synth work, which is already well recognized in his young career. building deep layers of warm sound from trance-like synth melodies, lopatin's music is evocative of motion as it never feels stuck - always evolving, constructing and deconstructing new worlds from sound, and here he provides the perfect counterpoint to anderzen's chaos.

working together, but differently. clear of, shows cloaked light working within a new mode; an expanded temporal sensitivity through field recording and discrete static chords. slow movement- revealing growth and decay at the subtlest thresholds; disappearing music with a heavy presence, a shifting sense of space, not in the room, but of the room.

pale blue sky’s someday, sometime approaches a similar expansion of perception and unobscuring blur. through tape manipulation, the inner workings of tonal relationships are placed under focus; extending time to reveal new moments; widening the view. distorting to understand; a reorienting pause. originally conceived to coincide with the cloaked light / pale blue sky california tour with pedestrian deposit, infinite body, earn, and mirror to mirror in january 2010; a testament to a common point and it’s different trajectories. approaching the possibility.

june 2010 release ; hard to believe this is only the second “proper” outing from zach wallace & greg davis’ sun circle, here expanding their vision to four separate side-length pieces, each featuring the duo on a pair of the same acoustic instrument ...

it’s nice to hear the “drums” piece (first performed at the root strata “on land” fest) without it’s rising electronic component - the locked-in zones & slight, almost imperceivable harmonic shapes that start billowing into your ears mid-side are unlike anything i’ve heard on record ... by contrast the veritable flurry of buzzing overtones that make up the two tamboura pieces almost seem like overload after the opening piece’s head-space clearance ... and the final gongs set is the perfect come-down from a good hour-plus of next-level deep listening ...

... you can read the art direction as sparse or endlessly complex ; much in the same way you can the music ... it appears to make perfect sense given the aesthetic appropriations & the whole package works together to put zach & greg’s whole zen-like mythos in order ... nice record !!!

following in the tradition of minimalist composers such as la monte young, yoshi wada, and charlemagne palestine, sun circle exemplifies a contemporary focus on long form drone music. members greg davis and zach wallace have shown their interest in the field most recently with extended works on kranky and root strata respectively; together on lessness, they show a deep-rooted interest in the power of simple forms.

building upon themes from their recent solo work (davis’ subtly shifting tonal work with electronic oscillators and wallace’s acoustic drone work on the glass armonica), lessness is comprised of four side long works each exhibiting a different acoustic instrument in isolation. exploring drums, tambouras (both rhythmic and droning), and gongs with a meditative precision, davis and wallace’s work seems at once both mechanic and human; the product of focus, revealing a vast beauty within the subtlety of the geometric potential of sound.

i shouldn’t have to keep introducing this guy to y’all ; he’s been pretty much kicking ass in & out of the caboladies duo for a couple of years now ; this one raises the bar with a dareisay “song-based” set that’s as close to eclipsing the mutant landscapes mapped out by nik raicevic, j.d. emanuel, ruth white, et.al back in prior decades, yet somehow remaining entirely contemporary in it’s appropriations & analogue filigree ..

remember, “every joker is a pillar in the house of cards.” ; highly recommended !!!

brand new "full album experience" from flower man that picks up nicely from the opaque interstellar song craft stratagems laid out on last year's 'exotic cameo' cdr, this time for a more propulsive journey. the grey scale strings of 'exotic cameo' and 'slowmo matterade' have been given an electro shock bath and a new tape echo hood. from there the keys wander, buzz, and bleep in and out of a number of different synth songwriting modes. “valhalla" on the b-side is an abstract nod to patrick gleeson and the last track is a loose homage to the 'northstar' record by p. glass. an ephemeral architecture on the brink of collapse. an assortment of numbers, jokers, and regal archetypes that adds up to nothing more than a miniature house in a draftless room. new bricks for the deck.

the two “regarding wave” pieces unfold at a snail’s pace ; timbrally they sound like “frozen” clouds of massed string ensembles, carefully laid into a giant dorian lattice (i’m reminded a little bit of jim o’rourke’s first “orchestral” pieces such as “disengage”) ... the album’s centerpiece “rainbow body” takes a good 10 minutes to slowly creep out of a beat-frequency-laced sine-tone cluster into an almost clashing, harmonically-rich root-fifth chord, before the latter wins out & the piece resolves to a wholly pleasant footing (listen to the sound-sample for this bit, post-resolution) ...

these three sessions of wonder & magic come pressed into the pits & lans of a compact disc, housed in a full-color gatefold flat-pack, designed by greg himself ... highly recommended !!!

dialing in from a growing catalog spread across several labels and a decade of work, greg davis brings install a beautiful new album: regarding wave. admittedly, we don't know too much about how greg made regarding wave, but we do know that he made it just for us, and we can certainly affirm that greg knows the install sound very well, having mastered wood-land's stone circle cd-r last year.

musically this album has a shimmering brightness about it, almost like an auditory hall of mirrors where the smallest chime echoes and repeats kaleidoscopically forever. over the course of three tracks, greg produces moments of rippling beauty via polite tonal drones that evolve at glacial speed. full of harmony and accessibility, regarding wave is not only a welcome addition to greg's diverse oeuvre, but also a worthy introduction to his music for newcomers.

the bottom line: if you already know greg davis, you know this will be amazing, and if you don't, prepare to be impressed!

kosmische keuterboeren recorded this tape on a sacred mountain dedicated to saint amands, who is said to have brought a hanged criminal back to life. surprisingly, he is also the patron saint of all who produce beer: brewers, innkeepers and bartenders. especially that last part is applicable to this duo, both intense supporters of the belgian beer cult. as far as ‘harvest’ goes: one of these guys is also active in penguins know why and sylvester anfang ii. imagine the postpunk antics of the former being reflected in a stoned haze of the latter. devotional music to meditate to. same tracks on both sides of this cassette.

june 2010 release ; here (and below) are evidence of a massive 7-part spring 2010 gift tapes batch - each of these comes as a pro-duped / imprinted black-or-white tape inside a collage-heavy double-sided j-card (each individually hand-numbered) inside a “rounded” norelco ...

... here mr. madak rides again with this incredible suite of electronic music, largely breaking away from the flowing, sequencer-based “jams” of his peers & heading into headier territories ... i’m reminded of françois bayle’s work (especially “toupie dans le ciel”) ; in particular the cycling, upper-register twinkle & variably-spaced twitter (not to mention the aggregate heterodyning low-end) bring back memories of skipping class to listen to ina-grm reel-to-reels in my college library ...

for my money this is the best tape of the batch, but honestly, they’re all pretty damn great !!!
