january 2010 release ; proper, mass-market issue of this 2005 dronedisco set from c. spencer yeh, channeling xenakis’ “bohor” & re-routing its scattered-metals approach through contemporary “underground” sensibilities ... this is augmented by a fine 7-minute blast of “bagpipesynth modes & a more blown-out, major-key variant of the title piece’s brownian creep ...

very glad to have this set be more than a blip in spencer’s discographical roadmap ; highly recommended !!!

artist: burning star core
title: inside the shadow
format: cd

a reissue of an obscure tour only recording from 2005 brings to the light the flickering dance of mr yeh and his dives into organic drone music. unlike the majority of his electronic compositions inside the shadow reveals three textures brought to life with violin, chimes and bells that defy most of the contemporaries limitations to synth only exercises.

yeh proves the heart of landscape oriented linear composition is only limited by the imaginations of the creators and brings warmth to an otherwise cold genre with the flame of inside the shadow.

november 2009 release ; here’s a fine lp of electro-acoustic music from mms customer joe musgrove, self-issued on his pleasing everyone all the time imprint (in a pittance of an edition of 120) ...

performed by joe (electronics, zither, percussion, clarinet, prepared guitar, tapes, toy instruments, sundry objects, digitalia) along with rebecca healy (foot pump, first side) and andrew thompson (violin & electronics, second side), the piece harkens back to organum’s mid-late 80s music (the ominous glow of airy, gaseous ambiences act as a bed for more pointillist, iterative scrabbling) or even jim o’rourke’s early tape pieces ...

amidst the flurry of submissions we get every month (mostly, still, laptop drones with pretty trees on the cover) this one really stood out as something unique, bridging a “modern composition” sensibility with a certain 80s underground tape-trader vibe (certainly the cover, which could easily be mistaken for an early steve tibbets album, sets it apart) ... great stuff !!!

january 2010 release ; timely10 years onreissue of kevin drumm’s landmark second album ...

continuing on from the s/t disc’s minimal inflections, kevin’s chosen pallette of prepared guitar, chord organ, modular synth, and computer dovetail through a trilogy of tightly woven narratives, taking in both the then-in-its-infancy electro-acoustic improvisation sound-set inasmuch as the “classicmusique concrète work of lars gunnar bodin & akos rozmann & the “holy minimalism” of charlemagne palestine et.al ...

it’s hard to elicit just how revolutionary the pairing of far-out electronic abstraction (certainly the disc’s opening 10k strains are a test of the listener’s constitution) & modal, drone-based pleasantries seemed at the time, especially given how commonplace said approach is in this day & age (all due to kevin’s lasting influence) ...

... as much as i’m tempted to put a sound-sample of the final “payoff” track (22 minutes of gorgeous organ drones & ryoji ikeda-ish stereo beep pulse cut with quiet prepared guitar interludes) ; i’ll instead challenge your sensibilities with what i’ve long thought to be one of kevin’s finest recorded moments ; the center-section of “.cynicism(an impossibly complex array of analogue-synth processed guitar & flailing filter topologies, pulled off with an apparent ease that i still can’t wrap my head around a decade later) ...

one of my top five favorite albums of the 90s ; finally available again. highly recommended !!!

artist: kevin drumm
title: second

format: full-length cd (47 minutes)
label: perdition plastics
catalogue number: per 010.2

this is the first re-issue of kevin drumm’s second since its original appearance and out-of-print status in 1999. in a limited edition of 500 copies, perdition plastics is delighted to make this work available once again.

drumm is well-known and respected as a composer and improvisational player. second is indeed drumm’s second solo release being comprised of three compositions. by appearing, disappearing, and reappearing, subtle and dissonant sounds characterize an internal dialogue within an almost filmic scenario. foreshadowing his later, dark, ambient drone work, second utilizes a variety of sources including: guitar, organ, accordion, and analogue synth finalized to computer to create this unique document within his extensive output. compositionally precise and intricate, minute details emerge and illustrate the scope of drumm’s range.

january 2010 release ; new edition of the classic 1997 release, featuring “guitar”, “recorded directly to tape in fall, 1996” ...

upon its release (and even now, still, to some extent) this was a divisive title, not quite fitting in w/ the time’s reigning “lowercase” aesthetic, nor the harsh noise, metal, or digital music scenes with which kevin eventually found allegiance ... consisting instead of scrabbly figures run through an upper-threshold gate, then processed with heavy filtering and gain-based effects. there are certainly parallels between some of the harsher segments (listen to the sound-sample for a terse segment - book-ended by silence for at least a minute in either direction) of “sheer hellish miasma” ; the final track’s 17 minutes of glacial drift hedged with at first subliminal, then overbearing dat-tape distortions reminds of some of his more recent collaborative work ...

a great disc, a challenge for sure, but i’m amazed at how much more permissive we’ve all become to what was undoubtedly the most “out-there” thing i had ever heard back in97 ... highly recommended !!!

artist: kevin drumm
title: kevin drumm (self-titled)

format: full-length cd (56 minutes)
label: perdition plastics
catalogue number: per 007.2

this is the first re-issue of kevin drumm’s self-titled premiere solo recording since its original appearance in 1996. perdition plastics is honored to make drumm’s foundational work available again in a limited edition of 500 copies.

kevin drumm is an established and respected composer and improvisational player. he emerged as a notable presence in the thriving chicago avant music scene of the 90s. this release introduced drumm with seven tracks of improvised, advanced tabletop guitar. recorded directly to digital audio tape without edits or overdubs, drumm evokes a powerful new perspective in guitar sound and method. by contrasting sparseness and complexity, drumm links improvised new music with electronic composition. this sedate, monochromatic package helped further obscure listener expectations.

january 2010 release ; heated duo exchange between percussionist tatsuya nakatani & trumpeter forbes graham ... tons of “sculptural” playing (tatsuya’s prepared percussion is always a treat, forbes regularly playing his instrument sans-mouthpiece, yielding some fine tube-resonance overtones - listen to the sound-sample) ...

blaq002 - tatsuya nakatani/forbes grahamessences” cd

a recording of a meeting between trumpet player forbes graham and percussionist tatsuya nakatani, essences is shamanic, ceremonial, and yet urgent. nakatani is practically orchestral on this disc, wielding an arsenal of bells, bowls, and gongs. graham switches between trumpet and piccolo trumpet, although most would be hard pressed to tell which he is playing. starting off in a meditative, sonorous state and building to a pattering panoply of rhythms, essences is an exploration of the folding and unfolding of mysteries and secrets.

nestled somewhere between a trumpet recital and a mego-lineage harsh computer-music set, this music covers a lot of ground, starting with the sequenced rhythms & overloaded blare of “drowned” & continuing in wildly erratic form through the albums almost maryanne amacher-esquefor you, lily(listen to the sound-sample) ...

along with greg kelley, forbes is doing great work in liberating the trumpet from its “fanfare” origins ... a great disc for the short-attention-span set, housed in a clear amaray with an insert (detailed below) ...

june 2009 release ; i really can’t foresee a time when skotkraagspear’s whole oeuvre / shtick won’t appeal to my inner teenage mind ... normally i’d swear off this sort of ruthless, tact-less rampart plunderphonic pastiche, but having seen skot do this stuff in real time (in front of people, with only a table of scattered sound-producing detritus at his beck/call) i can attest to his innate knack for making these sorts of add-afflicted, pre sugar-coma antics play ...
taped sounds press release...
id m theft able "babb's bridge" lp

debut lp by this monster of current fluxus. a fantastic composition of tape, computer, voice, choir, all sorts of instruments and objects, etc.

in the beautiful gardens surrounding the city of portland, maine. in a small disconnected community, there is a being living by the name of skot spear. in his country called kraagistan, spear is creating his own sound universe for years now. an amalgan of strange cdr's, cassettes, dvd's, books, paper and ephemerea, is the evidence of a man's own dictations and conversations in the ether.

performing as the live statue of id m theft able, people were challenged to witness a world beyond the clouds of maat. gateways to a highway of influences reaching from the hip sound poetry of those 60's lore we all adore, the modern media and the future ideas. regurarly being namedropped by a core of sound seekers as being one of their biggest post 21st century influences.

babb's bridge is a concept album about a beautiful late 1800 bridge with a story. skot lurked in the ether surrounding this bridge, conceptualising a book that is recently unheard unseen. an album with so many little themes our cognition blanks and trebles. and challenges our mind into a self producing entity of storylines. this is the debut lp of id m theft able, after an extensive study for non permanent media. this album will appeal to fans of both kemialliset ystavat, the scumbag relations imprint, shmf, sten hanson, otto muehl, gedalia tazartes and the modern tales of fishsteak crank sturgeon ...

november 2009 release ; pristine electro-acoustic work from cenotaph’s john w. fail (responsible for both a criminally under-appreciated quadruple tape-box on c. spencer yeh’s dronedisco &, partially, the “lied music vs. boy-band tax returns” lp on ultra eczema ... as well as full-length collaborations with spiral joy band & ben reynolds) ...

inhabiting similar head-space as graham lambkin’s recent “softly softly copy copy,” the piece in question here takes it source material from live-played instrumentation (guitar, accordion, violin, casio, xylophone, voice) arranged in increasingly sparse, yet episodic aggregations throughout the a-side (listen to the sound-sample for a few different “chunks”) ... the b-side starts off with a great bit of reed drones & dry, muffled drumming with behind-the-neck guitarisms which gradually receded into a long section of “small sounds” before reconnecting with the piece’s drone-core ...

much of the assembly methods remind me of john clyde-evans(né tirath singh nirmala) often aleatoric-feeling loop-constructs, yet here everything’s precise & perfectly measured ... despite the (outrageous, sorry !!! if you only knew what it cost to reliably import italian records these days ...) price, i wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone wishing to hear an impeccablypersonal” take on contemporary improv-concrète modes ...
8mm press release...

8mm 038 the 15.000 day boat trip lp

it happens every so often, something astounding arrives out of nowhere. like a revelation from another era that has been trapped between dimensions, floating endlessly through the empty layers of space and time and then suddenly arriving like an ancient message in a bottle.

the message: “the 15,000 day boat trip” a stunning  soundtrack to an imaginary travel through the oceans of the mind, and the wonderful diary of a lonely traveller across the world. my word: this record sounds like nothing you’ve ever heard before, a strange alchemy between styles. completely without genre and extending beyond the boundaries of the infinite!

decades of avant garde, are homaged together in a sort of “harmonic schizophrenia” in this unique distillation of (electro) acoustic music, sound collage, spectral folk passages, free improvisation, and an almost orchestral arrangement for violin and strings. each subject is particularly approached and concurring in the creation of an ancestral form of a “blues” hybrid.

if what you ask from a record is the chance to travel with your imagination, close your eyes and you’ll be somewhere between atlantis and utopia floating in the hold of this ship full of ghosts!

music composed, performed and edited by john w. fail (cenotaph audio label, past releases on dronedisco, ultra eczemalied music, spiral joy band)
mastered by ruradith sadancahaan.
massive nautical-style silkscreened artwork and inserts  by cavalo branco.
handnumbered and limited to 300 copies.

ramleh
valediction
second layer records

after witnessing a whitehouse performance in 1982 gary mundy was inspired to found both the pivotal label broken flag, and ramleh – a power electronics project whose initial, hugely influential recordings and shows were violent sonic outbursts of desperate, confrontational and barely controlled screaming feedback with a slightly psychedelic edge. this first incarnation of ramleh, although rightly considered a seminal project in the power electronics scene, were only active for a mere two years (although much of their released material only surfaced after this period), and in 1984 the project was put on an indefinite hiatus.

mundy, however, was keen to push on and investigate new territories, and ramleh was resurrected a couple of years later as an equally pioneering and influential improvised noise rock project who, along with ‘sister groupskullflower, proceeded to send seismic tremors through the international noise underground that are still being felt (and perhaps only truly understood) today. in 1997, after a run of boundary-pushing singles and albums, this ‘rock’ version of ramleh was also laid to rest.

however, some five years later, mundy decided to once again return to the project, and ramleh were reborn a second time. at first continuing in an improvised noise rock vein – albeit with a more driving, stripped down sound – and then, in 2008, finally returning to an exploration of their power electronics roots. now we are lucky enough to have both rock and power electronics incarnations of ramleh active concurrently – the former consisting of mundy along with long-term collaborator anthony di franco (ax, ethnic acid, jfk, skullflower etc.) on bass and martyn watts (danielle dax, breathless) on drums; and the latter of just mundy and di franco.

after a new ‘rock10-inch ep co-released earlier this year by black rose recordings and an also resurrected broken flag, second layer records are extremely proud to present valediction - the first all new ramleh album since 1997, and the first new power electronics recordings from the project for 25 years. and yet valediction is no ordinary “power electronics” record, nor is it anything as straightforward as simply a return to their roots. valediction is very much an entity of its own – both consolidating and expanding upon everything ramleh have touched on in the past, but also digging into entirely fresh ground for the band. valediction is, perhaps, ramleh’s most bleakly psychedelic creation so far.

about the author

bruce russell is a practitioner in sound, who since 1987 has been a member of the dead c. this genre-dissolving new zealand trio, mixes rock, electro-acoustics, noise and improvisation in equal measures. he has also been active as a solo artist, and directed two of new zealand’s vanguard labels, xpressway and corpus hermeticum.

he is currently studying at rmit towards a doctorate in sound. this seeks to establish a theory of the social utility of improvised sound work, building on guy debord’s critique of the commodity-spectacle, walter benjamin’s reflections on time and commodity fetishism, and karl marx’s theory of value.

as with all of alan sherry / siwa’s recent issues, this one comes in full spec ; the sleeves all hand-screened / pulled, with multiple overlapping elements (just the cover alone looks like it was fed through at least five separate times, then again with a gorgeous spot-varnish) ; even the inner sleeves are screened, as are the lp labels ...

an incredible edition of incredible music ; highly recommended !!!
siwa press release...

sabu orimo : wind songs lp

following a number of small run releases (and an appearance on a recent volume of psf 's tokyo flashback series) here's a vinyl only set of sabu orimo's solo shakuhachi work. recorded by orimo in 2007-2008 and played on unlacquered natural bamboo flutes.

with an approach to his instrument described as "japanese old stone age style" (or the somewhat misleading term 'noise shakuhachi') orimo might be said to be working on the fringes (of the fringes) of japan's broadly defined 'psychedelic' scene. that said one could ask if siwa's motives here might not just be a case of trying to peddle 'the hated music' behind a veil of blatant exoticism. yes that does mean that after a number of rock/folk moves we're dishing up some more exquisite 'improv'. and you deserve it.

heavy weight vinyl only edition of 299 in five color handpulled screen printed sleeves.

as expected this vacillates between a buncha divergent modes w/ which ang has an intimate knowledge ; hell, even over the first 3 tracks (excerpted via the sound-sample to your left) we get a little of the keening revolt-musik, then a little plunderphonics, and a mellow ukelele tune ... after which there’s a radio play, some gnarly duck-call improv, one of those pixie-voice things that she does , a tape-collage, some electro, more plunderphonics ... and that’s just the first side !!!

great stuff, alebit not for the weak of constitution / faint of heart (that cover, jesus !!!) ...

preggy peggy and the lazy babymakers;
get an ace case of the measles lp

while my face drips with pus, yellow soup, manjuice and morning youghurt, i finally got an injection against measles, which i also suffered from until i found out about preggy peggy and the lazy babymakers (both thru a cdr on the great chocolate monk and on preggy's own "being weird isn't enough records"!), i thought they deserved it more then i did.

as a "price" i could release their record inspired by the subject matter. which became a beautiful audiobook like a madman's guide to alienville! the medicine these chaps have to use makes em sing in different colours and add styles to eachother that never heard of eachother's existence.  preggy peggy and the lazy babymakers basicly got started because of angela sawyer's (boston based psycho recordcollector and owner of the great weirdo records store!) compulsive need to overdub a mountain of voices over a mountain of strange instruments played by ja, the other preggy who aparantly "lives on one of new england's gray shabby beaches with a couple of miniature fluffy dogs"! they never play live, it is probably pretty impossible to do live anyway, and style wars it sort of comes near sun city girls jams with francois dufrene, remixed by a texas hill billy..

both members were in a mountain of bands noone ever heard of, such as; pig sexthe pie plate band, the cool breeze, jet jaguar backing bandphenomenological boysstick a fork in itlaser laser laser laser, the white peoplecough syrup, the saliva sistersgiacinto scelsi tribute band, white cocainemy son's coloring book, the whoop whoop girlsjimmy & the wafflesn. soseki/t. hatsurothe kantian projectinstant distance mental powers, the whistle bandbyron, jimmy & gerardles garcons sur la plagelife partners, the a minor projectmoshi moshi i am the decidergoils goils & frippedswastika niggerssun shine sanitarium, the cloud clubscarcity of tanks, the depressed hornsfleetwood sac & the sex-havershuman hairsgrizzler big band, exusamwaduck that, etc..

march 2009 release ; an auspicious start for this young mancunian imprint ...

i’m getting a specific deerhunter vibe from a middle sex (even as their side devolves in & out of a buncha “tricky” sections involving dubbed-out drums, fuzz-factory / face-melt guitar and echoplexed vocal mantras) but it’s the free-scrunge of temperatures that bites my bullet ; a highly entertaining 16 minutes of coruscating guitar grallop, perfectly in line with the lafms --> bananafish-universe trajectory that could as well have been released on broken flag in 1986 ...
carnivals press release...

car001: a middle sex/temperatures

a middle sex are a trio from manchester. on 'unclean yawn' they weave together marathon syncopated drumming, choral singing with static drones and voices that float in through the cracks and join the party of stalactites above. bookended by sunburned guitar and swirls of ecstatic vocals, you might just dream about the lions again. 'unclean yawn' drifts between bleached visions of distant 'pop' music and nauseating, nerve-fried habitats.

temperatures grapple their way through 16 minutes of enveloping decay in 'bifurcation'. weirdo vocals loop themselves into a rage of gin and pain killers before riding the wet concrete wave of total abyss. overblown electronics and submerged bass dance to the death with drums that carousel and shuffle in deep, sparse rhythm before imploding in a head down, rifle-fire free work out.

... very hard to place this stuff (never a bad sign) ; some of the segments sound like the “breakin’” tracks from the oneohtrix point never dvd, others sounds like hall & oates instrumentals dubbed to telephone answering-machine tapes, and others still the background music from a 1986 ron popeil infomercial ...

a confounding array of styles / influences, undoubtedly, but inarguably the first “surefire block rocker” / “rent party soundtrack” from of the neo-somnambulist wave ...

december 2009 release ; reissue of the lamborghini crystal1992 cool runnings holidaynew age tape, cited by many as one of the recorded highlights of said projects existence (the other being “dial: 747-creepozoid”) ...

recorded on june 1st through 3rd, 2004, this “wasted soundtrack for richard ramirez’ night walkmen” consists largely of 4-track songs played one-instrument-per-track in the nice, warm, ferric/cobalt fidelity that so defines the style ... natch there are plunders of ghostbusters music & tons of arbitrary, sloppy edits, but i was surprised to find a bunch of nice bedroom-guitar ditties (laced with zonked, wordless vocals & some fine cardboard drum-kit work) that wouldn’t have been out of place on a shrimper tape or, hell, even some early lou barlow project ...

coming around to this stuff, one step at a time ...

oesb-43 grippers nother onesers (at slimer beach) lp

completely remastered issue of a cult classic tape from 2004/2006. limited to 450 copies. pro-printed black & white covers and insert.

 also known as:
lamborghini crystal "1992 cool runnings holiday" released 2006 on cassette on new age tapes. recorded 2004 in the parking lot of the jim daytona avenue 711 memorial. dedicated to richard ramirez.

grippers nother onesers is a channeling of teenage mutant glue sniffing psycho dreams, a prelude to the psychotic beach bum depression induced by junkfood and huffing siphoned gas out of the oscar meyer mobile.

"after dark cravings" starts out with a voice saying ''hello earthlings'' which is an alien mistaking a candy bar for the higher life form inhabitants of earth's soft analog air minimal lo-fi satanic ritual resinated at the bottom of a plastic bong. ashes of the charles manson family band. a flash of memories of a grateful dead tape playing after you picked up a psycho hitchhiker. jim carrey self-consciousness about his new nose job at the oscars, being a vessel for the voice of the omnipresent leviathan comprised of lost souls stranded naked on the shoulder of the fast lane.

'aside from the heavy richard ramirez zone i wanted the record to have the feeling of when you find a half empty bottle of anti-psychotics and just see the name of the owner and you wonder where that person is now

december 2009 release ; finally available, the “propermass-market edition of this excellent set of pieces from bruce mcclure, using an involved setup including multiple film projectors, optical sound-tracks, and guitar pedals to yield a dense array of shifting / morphing / phasing sound, in this case recorded as performed (at face-melting volume) at the walker art center earlier this year ...

aside from the unique nature of his setup, the music here couldn’t be farther away from any known paths, largely taking form as a series of looped pulses sent through metallic digital delays resulting in a kind of robotic-feel verison of reich’s early tape-phase pieces ... yet the unstable nature of mcclure’s volatile systems yield tons of polyrhythmic patternage, the woozy timing imperfections lending much to the overall effect ...

a real mindfuck, and one of my favorite lps of the year ... highly recommended !!!
olde english spelling bee press release...

oesb-36 bruce mcclure "vouchsafe me more soundpicture (fain make glories)" lp

bruce mcclure is well known on the international experimental film circuit for his unique projector performances that utilize film loops & modified 16mm projectors. but there is also an equally innovative sound element to his work and he has been embraced by the experimental music community as well. bruce performed at the chocolate monk curated "colour out of space" festival in 2008 and was chosen as an opening act for throbbing gristle's reunion tour in the spring of 2009.

during mcclure's performances the optical sound signals from each projector are fed through banks of guitar pedals, manipulated live, and played at extremely high volumes through the p.a. system. the different loops phase in and out of each other resulting in what could be described as a power electronics version of the early tape experiments of steve reich and terry riley, while sparser sections have an off-kilter minimal techno feel reminiscent of plastikman and the early works of thomas brinkmann.

this album features four excerpts from a professionally recorded performance in early 2009 at the walker art center in minneapolis, mn.

december 2009 release ; mysterious lo-fi meta-bolic gee-whizzery from one sam meringue (aka matrix metals, yoga, explorers, wingdings, foxy baby & half of 90210 w/ the skatersjames ferraro) acting on behalf of his shadowy outer limits inc. parent-corp ...

... much like most of ferraro’s recently released glorp, meringue’s sub-fidelities leave much to be desired in the way(s) of definition ... but i’ll concede that, amongst the vast swaths of neo-somnambulist gunk clogging the “oh shit so limited highest recommendation oh snap sold out” small-run lp lanes these days, this one actually offers a good bit in the way of magic trance-out applications, remaining aloof in comparison to the straight mid-late-80s temple-worship that seems to define most of this stuff ...

comes with a 5-pagepro-stapled” manifest that, in spite of the mcluhan-esque double-speak, goes a long ways towards framing the mind-set that must accompany proper reception of the included sonics ... personally, i’m curious to see where this leads ...

oesb-30 flashback repository "s/t" lp

remastered issue of an obscure tape from the mysterious outer limits collective (wingdings / explorers / matrix metals / foxy baby / yoga / 90210 / etc). limited to 425 copies in pro-printed duo-tone sleeves with a 5-page essay booklet.

the flashback repository is a storehouse of collective waste consciousness from all beings of the universe, i.e. all unfiltered myth & material of the human/alien/animal mind, laying dormant in a hidden dimension resembling a disposal area or transfer station somewhere within our spectral plane. a vast depot for all universal race memory that passes beyond our mortal earthly cognition and subconscious apparatus. this reposited latent substance is available to all organisms within our particular sphere, all beings earthy and paranormal. the recordings here represent the three main stages of unconscious withdrawal: "glimpse", "recurrence", and "manifestation" - they are a blue print of sorts. there may be a possibility of the retrieval of materials - the recycling of this substance alongside the development of individual real-time understanding of eternal materials and impressions that are constantly escaping our sensory grip. the repository shows itself as what appears to be part of an undivided whole, a section manifested in our dimensional field through thin channels of emotion & vibration. these phenomena are the result of direct brain-repository contact, a glimpse into the infinite plenitude of energy and data housed by the repository. with each glimpse, each peek through these looking-glass channels, the mind gains a deeper insight into the potentials hibernating within the data-pool and the particular characteristics and movements of the repository. it is important to note that the usage of the word 'flashback' connotes not only the re-collection or re-existence of memory and dream data from the past, but also the future. for instance one can 'flash forward' just as easily and achieve the desired results.

december 2009 release ; third album from tractor / gypsy-laced doom act pussygutt (following their epic oesb debut “story of rats • sea of sand” 2lp and a disc on 20 buck spin from late year) ...

after a good 10 minutes of field recordings & deft chamber-ensemble tone-clustering (which actually earns the lucier reference below) the pair let loose with their prescribed blend of slow, detuned riffs & soaring violin ... the b-side piece actually sounds much like kosugi’s “catch-wave” played back at 16rpm, with some loose violin figures worming over a bed of mellotron & earth-shaking hand-drumming ... great stuff.
olde english spelling bee press release...

oesb-19 pussygutt "gathering strengths" lp

third full-length release from this boise, idaho duo following two critically acclaimed efforts - the "sea of sand" double-lp on oesb and "she hid behind her veil" cd on 20 buck spin. pussygutt continue to develop their unique brand of doom soundtrack heaviness on gathering strengths, which features two side-long compositions titled "silence within" & "spirit walker". clarinets, violin, and cello are all prominent - lending this album even more of an avant-classical feel than previous efforts. the band calls this album "an esoteric meditation on soul and nature" and they cite alvin lucier, henry gorecki, and arvo part as primary influences for these recordings - along with the funeral doom of groups like nortt, catacombs, and celestiial.

november 2009 release ; first title in a new series of books published by marksynaesthesiaharwood (now residing in london) ...

dumb answer to miracles” collects graham lambkin’s writings & lyrics from the past decade or so in a nice, hardcover book, replete with a cdr containing a new plunderphonic orchestral piece (ala the snatches of ... scriabin (?) dotting “the breadwinner”) ... the book itself makes for fine continuous or even arbitrary reading (most pieces are a page at most in length) & the music acts as a fine complement to a quick read ...

as graham’s way-with-words both in & out of the shadow ring are a constant source of bemusement around these parts, this collection’s certainly the thing ...

graham lambkin dumb answer to miracles

limited edition book - 250 copies.
hardcover, numbered with cd.

cover illustration graham lambkin

'dumb answer to miracles' is the first official publication of writings by graham lambkin. previously 20 copies of a signed private edition entitled 'tomb of speed' were circulated amongst friends, colleagues and mail order customers. this collection gathers all the 'tomb of speed' writings, a handful of lambkin's lyrics he wrote for the band shadow ring and many unpublished works.

these writings entertain as much as they baffle, happily wandering the glorious pastures of open bewilderment. the ordinary dons the fantastic, the uncanny flirts with the comical and a private world is open to those with an explorative constitution. what response can one gain from such writings? it's this uncomfortable familiarity or comforting unease that haunts the entire oeuvre of graham lambkin. the beautiful odd. the eldritch normality. the leek in milk sauce.
