dedicated to imperfection, obsessed by minimalism, fueled by spontaneity, akitsa return after four years with their fourth full length album. brash primitivism, bitter atmosphere and youthful naivety clash together, firing the rawest hate anthems in the akitsa cannon. the most undisputedly cruel faction of raw north american black metal seen thus far.

the propensity towards speed on this one eclipses the “prog” tendencies found throughout “world turns on its hinge” ... as much as dom’s multi-tracked buzz-saw guitar & witchy, exasperated vocals are spot-on, i’m kinda more impressed by kris lapke’s airtight drumming & clean production touches thoughout, elevating this from a genre-exercise into a full-fledged contender ...

april 2010 release ; ... had a single (tsr-label) by these guys (tres warren, taketo shimada, spencer herbst) a little while back & though much of it, but didn’t get the bigger picture / implications of the group’s whole modus / game-plan until i learned that taketo shimada was the kind soul responsible for organizing yoshi wada’s “pipe dreams” exhibition / performance at the emily harvey this past december, pretty much privately funded by himself as a labor-of-love, bringing yoshi back out to east coast for the first time in two decades ; respect ...

avant-garde day-traders these guys are not ; while psychic illstres warren’s guitar playing offers perhaps the most tangible link to reality here (he’s got a fine, almost bobby beausoleil-ish way with phrasing that works extremely well here) it’s spencer & taketo’s primeval drone-thump that anchors this music in past fantasy, yes, specifically referencing the whole la monte young / theater of eternal musicthing(the hand-drumming ; a clear angus maclise link throughout) but doing so from within the walls of the same canal-street walkups said intoned in/upon decades back ... their commitment to clarity-of-vision is tenable & the music, largely eastern-looking tribal free improv, thrives because of it ...

one of my favorite records of the year thusfar (who knows ? maybe i’ll canonize it in list form in 2015 ... i kid ; i’ll have the 2009 list ready by july 1st) ; highly recommended !!!

the baby believes the womb is the universe. at birth there is a glimmer of light and a shifting of space. i was there, but now i am here. then there are still but 2 things : me and the universe. and then what happens is other people.

from a note sounded in 1960 and held for a long time, a continuum of sound has been sluiced along a diagonal of personal ecstasy, and some have come to call it a drone. surrounding the drone is a genre, and within, wheat and chaff often comingle all too comfortably. but with tones as thick and texturally luxuriant with spiritual resonance as their long, glorious hair, messages are the two worthy gurus currently contributing to the echo.

messages evoke the womb. and when the womb smiles, it whispers messages, and then there is the first glimmer of light ..

crafting a lasting personal aesthetic in the midst of our ephemeral music culture is as rare as it is cause for celebration. with the release of city of straw, brooklyn’s sightings can be counted among the few contemporary bands who have forged a unique voice amongst the racket. recorded over a number of months in 2009 at the ocropolis (oneida’s brooklyn, ny studio), the band’s seventh studio album becomes the crucible from which their grandest and most coherent statement finally emerges.

sightings has never presented a particularly welcoming façade and their sui generis music has perhaps been passed over by less discerning listeners over the eleven years of their existence, but throughout this they have created a singular body of work appreciated and touted by the likes of thurston moore and andrew wk. sightings will insist (and we agree wholeheartedly) that at their core they are a rock band working within the context of pop song-craft. as bassist richard hoffman told us recently, “i think everyone in the band tries to remember the value of minimalism. ultimately i think we try to write pop music, where there's no chaff and everything has a place.” with a deep reach beyond the spirit of their influence from greats like birthday party, dead c and jesus lizard, city of straw finds sightings working at the peak of their creative powers and is the perfect re- introduction to one of new york’s most accomplished bands.

after three years of touring with the locust, pig destroyer, and genghis tron, “cut and run” emerges as a monument of bizarre brutality, and a testament to the continued vitality of the new york underground. “cut and run” shall be heard.

release date: april 27th, 2010
catalog: ppm32

total abuse are from austin, texas. since their first show in november 2006 ta have been recording and playing a heavy onslaught of feedback drenched hardcore soundscapes, taking hints from the dead c, black flag (chavo and rollins era), void and harry pussy.

total abuse’s roster includes; rusty kelley on vocals (who also makes harsh noise under the name breathing problem), matt lyons on drums, ryan foster on guitar, dustin pilkington on bass and as of august 2008 they added former snobs guitarist, duncan knappen as second guitar. members now live in new york, oakland and austin and get together as much as possible to record and destroy ears live.

on the new lp titled “mutt” recorded between may 2008 to october 2009 for ppm, total abuse finally cement a marriage between their obsession with early uk power electronics, and early eighties american hardcore. since their humble beginnings they have been hinting at the sound, and on mutt they deliver full force. heavy feedback infused hardcore, not for the weary. the lp comes with printed inner 12” sleeve & a zine.

july 2009 release ; ... geoff & i played one of our first “comeback” shows opening for these guys here in town ; they’re slowly becoming one of my favorite “new” bands due both to the unorthodox lineup (tenor sax, travis beam, sheet-metal/drums) & their razor-tight, albeit short sets (i think they played for maybe 20 minutes that night ; everything was through-composed & there wasn’t a single wasted gesture) ...

the 2-part suite here comes across more like a tape-piece than a “rock” record ; discrete segments of harmonizer-guitar, odd-meter metal klang, and echo reeds twist in & out in varying fidelities, with tons of sharp, jarring edits into each new segment ...
the social registry press release...
zs
music of the modern white

the social registry tsr071 lp
street date: 07/07/2009

for the next step forward in an already-busy year, the social registry is proud to present music of the modern white -- our first release by zs (a veteran trio that mixes just about every genre imaginable into an altermodern pastiche of the most epic, beautiful and aggressive proportions you’re likely to hear in 2009). we’re talking no wave, prog rock, free jazz, noise, academic drone, funk, minimal, industrial and ambient with the studio trickery of a brian wilson that adds both narcotics and new york street life to his rap sheet. featuring sam hillmer (tenor sax), ben greenberg (electric guitar) and ian antonio (drum set), we’re truly honored to release this 12’’ and remain certain that zs have found a perfect home for their unique, utterly physical excursions on tsr.

let’s plunge in a little further, shall we? the a side (or mmw i) opens with a series of metallic drum pangs reminiscent of the creepy chinese opening ceremony in last summer’s olympics. you can see from the get-go that there’s more studio emphasis than usual on this piece. it’s a true sonic experience. tenor saxophone figures rapidly flutter, squeal and moan across the sonic field like a more abrasive version of the lounge lizards. slowly, a guitar drifts in with a sharp, razorblade drone that sounds somewhere between a car motor and the sound of detroit going bankrupt. the musical equivalent of a robert rauschenberg, this side continually erases itself, peeling away the sonic layers and replacing them with open atmospheric dissonance to the point of a fractured, physical bliss.

the b side (or mmw ii) changes trajectory by opening with sporadic polyrhythmic trills and drum figures. greenberg’s guitar throbs in the distance like a theremin feeding back over an air-raid horn. once again, deconstruction comes into the scene as the palette is wiped clean and replaced with a series of handclaps and harmonics in odd time. finally, perhaps taking a cue from the boredoms’ playbook, the track is immediately compressed into a stew of fractal notes and manipulated in the studio from all directions. from this, all three members are completely free to communicate without expectation or precedent – a perfect, near-tranquil conclusion to our schizophrenic journey.

with art by john dwyer and experimental intentions oozing out of its auditory pores, music of the modern white is something new and worthy of your attention. it refuses to play into the dead retro tropes that seem stuck on some sort of feedback loop throughout the music world. this is no fleet foxes. this is the sound spewing from the bullhorn before they blast the top off the mountain where the foxes live.

click the play button to hear an excerpt of "music on two high poles"
april 2010 release ; ah, here’s something we don’t get in every week (or ... year for that matter) - a reasonably priced, domestic issue of historic sound-art ... in this case a pair of extended takes recorded in 1979 by pioneering german artist rolf julius ...

rolf’s been on my own radar since discovering his work via the sublime series of edition rz-distributedsmall music” discs released throughout the 90s ... those recordings of his site-specific works ; often involving series of tiny speakers used both to excite resonant materials (dirt, paint, etc ...) and amplify sound-waves (usually recordings of naturally occurring sounds ; animals, insects, etc ...) were something of a gateway for me into the whole “broken musicsector, and remain some of my all-time favorite comminglings of visual & sonic art ...

both pieces here (seemingly) incorporate some sort of overdubbed flute / electronics setup that yields a variable-width array of floating timbres ; the first has an almost feldman-ic pace (each iteration is cut with at least a minute of near-silence) & the second more of a continuous flow of shifting chord-clusters and a persistent sub-drone that recall both terry riley’s “time-lag accumulator” outings & the earthen wood / wire space of yoshi wada’s 70s music ...

huge kudos to western vinyl for reinstating the series here (note: this isn’t a reissue of the previous “small music vol. 1 • white • yellow • black” set but in fact an otherwise un-issued work) ; hopefully these will file out in regular installments over the next year or so ... highly recommended !!!

rolf julius
music for the ears
a western vinyl release
wv075 || format: cd
release date: 04/13/2010

for a long time i’ve been thinking about how to create spaces into which one can retreat, where one can find quiet, where one can see, hear, where one is able to concentrate, where one is isolated from the world around but still is able to participate in it…by means of art or music or both

 – rolf julius, 1987

futurism and dadaism both made use of the synthesis of audio and visual arts to create a singular experience greater than the sum of its parts. this idea was further advanced by the fluxus and minimalism movements. born in 1939 in wilhelmshaven, germany, rolf julius was profoundly influenced and inspired by these movements while he studied art in bremen and berlin.

years later, after immersing himself in musical works by artists like morton feldman, john cage, and la monte young, julius began to shift his focus from visual art to the synthesis of sound and visual art and nature, exploring the relationships between sounds and objects and environments. julius soon discovered how sounds can influence vision, creating simple tones to be presented in conjunction with his early photographic work.

such experiments culminated in the creation of his pioneering work “dike line (1979), which combined visual images with texture-inducing tones. this piece was presented at the ground breaking exhibition “f r augen und ohren” in 1980. mythical in scope, this was the first major european exhibition attempted to map international research by artists exploring relations between sound and visual art, bringing together work by john cage, luigi russolo, nam june paik, joe jones, bill fontana, milan knizak, harry bertoia, david tudor and rolf julius.

over the next 30 years julius went on to create some of the most meaningful and moving works in the grey area between music and art, between sound and silence. alongside takehisa kosugi, terry fox, and akio suzuki, he has emerged as one of the most important and influential sound artists of our time.

since the early 1980’s julius has referred to his compositions as small music, receiving international acclaim from those in the fields of contemporary art and music for calling the origins of sound and vision into question. small music not only describes julius’ approach to composition (soft and compelling sounds from simple instruments and nature), but also a way in which to view his works and ultimately the world. art historian bernd schulz once wrote “if one recalls john cage’s central theme of “silence” then rolf julius is the contemporary artist who approaches him most closely”. juliussmall music has the distinct ability to heighten our perception such that “silence” becomes a positive quality of a place and a situation, and not just an absence of sound. whether using photographs, ink drawings, audio compositions, or subtle and sometimes almost hidden outdoor installations, rolf julius’ works serve as catalyst, increasing our awareness of the great beauty of the world that surrounds us.

western vinyl is proud to release “music for the ears” the first in a series of small music releases by rolf julius. with a goal of creating solitary sound environments, the small music series will culminate into a boxed edition of seminal works by this master sound artist. “music for the ears” is comprised of two long tracks of gently weaving tones exploring the possibilities of spatial experience. the cover image depicts juliussound installation in a bamboo forest in kyoto, japan where his music is placed high in the air, by speakers hanging freely from the branches of the trees. as the music suspends itself in the air, the tones sway in the wind floating ever so gently, caressing the ears, the trees, the light, and clouds.

julius' pioneering work “dike line(1979), was presented at the ground breaking collective exhibition “f r augen und ohren” in 1980, together with works by john cage, nam june paik, joe jones, bill fontana, harry bertoia, and david tudor. alongside takehisa kosugi, terry fox, and akio suzuki, he has emerged as one of the most important and influential sound artists of our time.

julius's works have since been shown in countless major exhibitions and important musuems around the world, such as new york's ps1 (1983), the 1985 paris biennial, documenta 8, kassel (1987), the hamburger banhof, berlin (1998), pittsburgh's mattress factory (2001), the centre pompidou, paris (2004), the two editions of sonambiente, berlin (in 1996 and 2006), museum bochum (2006), national museum for modern art, japan (2007), as well as in various galleries and non-profit spaces in berlin, paris, tokyo, bordeaux, san francisco, montpellier and barcelona. in 2005, in berlin, julius was awarded the prestigious hannah-höch-preis for an outstanding artistic life's work.

this release is the first of 8 which will cover rolf julius’ work over the past 30 years.

march 2010 release ; first title we’ve stocked from terence hannum & andre foisy’s locrian (here a&a’ed by chicago-land über-engineer jeremy lemos) ...

a straight palindrome (the b-side merely offers the a-side in reverse) the music herein largely consists of scratchy doom-oid guitar-drone (with flourishes of electronics & stray studio aftertouching) ; quite vivid and rather effective ...

expert” level tape edition from black horizonsjames livingston, including a rather lush 7-panel fold-out metal-flake dotted j-card (detailed below) ...
black horizons press release...

bh-39 locrian - falling towers / after the torchlight c40

i'm very pleased to present this new release from locrian, adding to their impressively solid discography. it sees them as a three-piece with the addition of mr. lemos, and a bit of a thickening up of their now trademark sound on these two tracks. shards of guitar improv, blackened howls, buzzing electronics and a constant progression through many chilling and evil zones.

audio is played in reverse on b-side, for perfect sound symmetry. silver ink on black with silver and blue glitter metallic paper. j-card is 7-panels. edition of 200 copies on hi-bias chrome tapes.

2009 release ; very nicely put-together tape (detail of the eyelet-laden insert below) from this six-member tape-collage / improv-freakout collective w/ something of an lafms vibe to them ...
black horizons press release...

bh-33 six heads - the popeye scat c40

this cassette moves with surprising fragility and restraint for a six member experimental project, the sound infected with a surrealist vibe, not too dissimilar to the audio equivalent of a tanguy painting, or maybe mlehst on quaaludes. floating through blue green vapors, only occasionally does concrete reality come to the forefront. two sidelong tracks filled with alien instrumentation, and title appropriate tape collage. few releases and some high profile collaborating make this a release to investigate further.

color digital printed three panel transparent j-card, and a one panel unique art for each copy, floating orchids over rainbow blood on gray cardstock. silver labels, black hi-bias chrome tapes. edition of 100.

april 2010 release ; straight banger from johntirath singh nirmalaclyde-evans, comprised of four “movements” of his uniquely detail-heavy / pan-directional spray of synthesized & processed elements ...

heavy on the “short-attention-span” tip (there’s a near-constant whiz-bang of layered, asynchronous blare) & quite raucous ; on par with his clarion-calling amen absen lp from a few years back ...

february 2010 release ; neat mix of pulse-width modulations, junk-electronic grappling, and no-future sandblasting from young swedish noise-artist mattias gustafsson (not to be confused with mats gustafsson ... or matthias gustaffson for that matter) ...

altar of flies
"permanent cavity"

ideal081 2010
format: compact disc.
edition: 600
b/w digipack

altar of flies is the new power on the swedish noise scene, to be put on the underground throne next to sewer election. altar of flies is mattias gustafsson who has recorded stuff since 2006, mainly for his own cassette label hästen & korset but also high quality sub terrestial labels like cipher, husk, and nil by mouth. "permanent cavity" is his first more widely distributed album release.

altar of flies is extremely uncompromising, creating organic, dark, unpleasant extreme electronic music through tape loops, analog synths and effects. this is very physical music in every way.

so - discover the power of altar of flies.

cover by daniel fagge fagerström (the skull defekts).

2009 release ; killermachine music” styled collection from wolf eyesnate young, hedging traditional “grislyhorror-movie inspired echo jams (think “friday the 13th”) with some rather beguiling minimal-synth interactions (listen to the sound-sample) ...

best non-demons thing i’ve heard from nate in a while ; highly recommended !!!
ideal press release...

detroit based nate young formed wolf eyes as a solo project a bit over ten years ago, probably right after he left nautical almanac. he was soon joined by aaron dilloway in '98 and john olson in 2000. dilloway dissapeared to nepal and was replaced by hair police beast mike connelly.

enough of the wolf eyes history lesson, we are now at 2009 and young is releasing one of his strongest works ever, the deep and impressive regression solo album on ideal! analog synths, tape delays, loops - presented in a restrained, relaxed and controlled way. this makes the music even more sick and dark than the we sound. i guess young was inspired by vintage horror movie soundtracks, 70's ambient synth stuff and intoxication. these things comes to my mind anyways.

nate young is here proving that he is covering a wide range of experimental music and that he is no doubt one of the few masterminds in the rougher parts of electronic music. ideal is highly recommending this to anyone claiming to be interested in synth and tape music. all right.

deathroes "suffocation"
format: c30 cassette album.
catalog #: ideal074
edition: 100

the "super-group" of noise, deathroes are ryan jencks (of sixes, crash worship, physics) and gerritt (misanthropic agenda and who has been seen with sunno))), john wiese,  lhd and sissy spacek). when we first heard their "hate fuck" cd for troniks we knew that these guys were something really special. we approached them and the agreed to release "suffocation" on ideal. it is a wall-of-noise thing that really, really gets to you, man. it is big sounding stuff and do i even have to say that it is really cold and hateful? plenty of plays at the ideal office.

october 2009 release ; a suite of twisting, dissonant, early-industrial leaning synth pieces from davidenvenomistreed ...
ideal press release...

envenomist "arc light"
format: c30 cassette album.
catalog #: ideal072
edition: 100

envenomist is david reed based in colombus, ohio. he has been producing heavy electronic music under various monikers since year 2000. envenomist is sourced solely using synthesisers to produce a minimal industrial ambience heavily influenced by 80's industrial acts and the european synth scene of the 70's. reed creates an uneasy feeling though his waves of analogue synth drones. highly recommended!!!
