jean-luc guionnet / seijiro murayamale bruit du toit” compact disc

  • part i (18:53)
  • part ii (25:44)
december 2007 release ; first of two discs from xing-wu featuring percussionist / composer seijiro murayama (last seen in fine form w/ lionel marchetti on intransitive’s “hatali atsalei” set) ...

this one features murayama in improviser mode, alongside saxophonist jean-luc guionnet channeling centuries-old spirits at a buddhist temple ... the music, even at it’s most active (listen to the sound-sample) barely raises a whisper ; guionnet’s circularly-breathed notes trail off into the distance, as murayama’s counter-flail largely sticks to cymbal and floor-tom flourish ...

xw5004cd jean-luc guionnet & seijiro murayama,
le bruit du toit,
cd 4-panel digipak

le bruit du toit is a rare meeting, and a recording which took place at a buddhist temple in mishima, between two stalwarts of music — seijiro murayama, founding figure of numerous seminal avant-rock outfits during the 80s/90s like fushitsusha (murayama was its original drummer) and anp (absolut null punkt) ; and jean-luc guionnet, already a veteran and a revered artist in the musical constellation of sound art/composition and improvised music.

a rare meeting, not because this was their first and only time playing together, but rare in the sense that this meeting was a culmination of a series of unprecedented events (mostly seemingly banal and mundane) and musical possibilities that occurred before and during that meeting. this document could be viewed as a portrayal of the very first time they had expressed themselves in a manner previously never explored and rendered conceivable between the two. sounds, approaches and possibilities never before coaxed from their instruments, not to mention constitutive of their overall artistry, have now and hitherto found life during this meeting and after.

le bruit du toit could not only begin here but invites its own possibilities.

emmanuel mieville / eric cordierdispositif: canal saint-martin” compact disc

  • dispositif: canal saint-martin (37:43)
  • disposition en rotondes (remix mieville) (12:38)
  • le centre d'animation (remix cordier) (14:12)
september 2007 release ; a site-specific work by eric cordier & emmanuel mieville, “performed live and composed in realtime during a concert at the centre d’animation jemmapes (paris, france)” ...

the 37-minute live piece (itself something something of a wonder, in terms of how exactly such a tightly controlled bit of live concrète was pulled from thin air) is augmented by later, studio re-workings by each respective composer/performer ...

xw5003cd emmanuel mieville & eric cordier
dispositif: canal saint-martin
cd 4-panel digipak.

xing-wu’s 3rd release, dispositif: canal saint-martin, has well-celebrated french sound artist/composer, eric cordier in collaboration with fellow countryman emmanuel mieville. the frontipiece of this release is the primary track itself, which was performed live and composed in realtime during a concert at the centre d’animation jemmapes, paris. marshalling well over 30 microphones as a sonic capture and repository of this parisian cultural site, cordier and mieville transform the space and its environs into an organic vestibule of aurality and sounds. but perhaps more importantly and exactly, both these artisans of sound were able to produce and invoke an event for listening — to draw us closer to the act of listening and also, to portray listening as it relates to everything else around, culturally and experientially.

dispositif constitutes part of, and continues in, a long line of on-site realisations of what cordier conceptually regards as a “vernacular device” — a term which was mainly, and first, used to describe his long-standing but now defunct project, with eric la casa and jean-luc guionnet, called afflux. briefly, a vernacular device intersects and traverses methodologies and approaches commonly associated with the fields of tape music/electroacoustic, improvisation and field recording or phonography. in more concrete terms, it is the transposition of the intricacies and complexities of “studio” work onto a site specific context in order to unearth and shape the sonic character of the contextual site itself.

aside from the primary track of the live performance, two more tracks complete this release — “dispositions en rotonde” and “le centre d’animation” which are “remixes” of the primary piece constructed respectively by mieville and cordier.

2004 release ; first global transmission from the kuala lumpur-based “experimental musicians and artists co-operative malaysia” , whose various members contribute 5 of the 25 tracks herein ...

the other 20 are from a who’s who of the int’l sound-research circuit and are of phenomenally high quality (the exoticity of the label’s point of origin must have been a contributing factor in getting all involved to contribute vital examples of their work instead of 2nd-tier comp-track dreck) ...

what i’m finding the most enjoyable about this set is the curatorial aspect ... the wide variety of approaches and fidelities on display somehow all blur boundaries in a highly listenable fashion (i.e. instead of segueing the work of like-minded auteurs into dovetail-like situations, the digital pieces morph into the analog into the lo-fi into the composed into the improvised ... many labels could learn volumes from the sequencing of this record alone), making this amongst the first comps to have a “soul”, so to speak...

completely essential listening, one of my favorite comps from recent times ...
