2008 reissue of this late 70s chanson-concrète classic ... long on my list of “to-find” records (i’ve still never come across an original) ... a really quite forward-thinking record consisting of orchestral pop music dissected into discrete elements in the studio. one of the more engaging blends of tape-music sensibilities into popular forms ...
world psychedelia press release...
manset, a self proclaimed 'lifelong rebel and eternal failure,' released his debut album in may of '68, just as the students were manning the ramparts. but it wasn't until la mort d'orion was released in 1970 that he really entered the public consciousness. the record is a thrillingly ambitious concept album of orchestral psych for which the self-taught manset wrote all the music, lyrics, and arrangements.

the title track runs nearly 25 minutes long, with an epic sweep that seems to encompass and distill all the finest french modernism has to offer, from mallarmé and nerval in its literary pretensions to the sonic advancements in studio sound pioneered by the likes of pierre schaffer and pierre henry.

moments of seemingly normal french chanson give way to subtle and psychologically disorienting manipulations of orchestral trappings -- the results are very dark, very beautiful, and quite unlike anything you'd expect from french popular music. creepy in some parts, at others 'serious' psychedelic/avant prog, with abundant dark orchestrated atmospheres. a masterpiece!

a hefty booklet (20 pages) contains biographical information and lyrics.

companion volume to koray’s elektronik türküller, a collection of singles from 1968 - 1973 ...
world psychedelia press release...
first proper reissue of koray's first album, an absolutely over the top debut album by the turkish psychedelic guitar guru, which is not only the rarest of all of his albums, but also the rarest turkish psychedelic album of them all; the record was released in 1973, but is actually culled from koray's singles from the previous five years. this wide range of dates (1968-73) encompasses a pretty potent period in music, and makes for great variety; some tracks have a kind of pre-psychedelic vibe, while others have the swirling hashish heaviness of that most elusive thing, a sound that one might deem 'pure psychedelia'; in any case, every track has that unique eastern feel that koray brings to all his recordings.

the end result is definitely on a par of greatness with elektronik turkuler, which makes this a must-have album for any psychedelic head! and as if that wasn't enough, there are eight incredible bonus cuts from the same period as the album tracks, only ever released as singles, that include some of the most blistering material koray ever recorded. wow! liner notes have plentiful information on erkin koray's early career, as well as lyrics for some songs... alas, only in turkish.

world psychedelia press release...
debut on cd for this more advanced fusion of ethnic music and eastern music from turkish psychedelic master koray; this is actually his third album (second for the dogan label), and is the 1976 follow-up to the immensely excellent "elektronik turkuler"; the album tracks themselves were recorded (from what i can find out) between 1972-1976, and were first issued as singles; five bonus tracks are great! and come from 1967, 1968, and 1971... as well as an undocumented and very cool acoustic version of 'yalnizar rihtimi' from "turkuler"; lyrics and photos in 8-page booklet.

yes! i thought i’d never live to hear this stuff, yet here we are. the other mogollar lp (“danses et rhythmes de la turquie”) is easily in the top half of my 47 all-time fave turkish-psych/anadolu-pop recordings made between 1968 and 1976, so this, their second unreleased album, is quite welcome. plenty of uneven temperament-organ, minimal snaking guitar lines, fantastically crisp hand and awesome odd-meter kit drumming. just damn perfect really...
world psychedelia press release...
a reissue of the incredibly rare second album from mogollar--so rare in fact, it does not even appear in the band's own discography. originally released by diskotur around 1971, the album features eleven perfect examples of the group's "andalou pop" mixture of ethnic turkish music and western elements. includes eight bonus tracks taken from singles (including different, heavier versions of two tracks from their danses et rhythmes album), and a booklet that features a band history and photos.

world psychedelia press release...
a masterpiece of turkish psychedelic freakbeat delight, recorded between 1970 and 1975 by the three very talented hur el brothers; this, their second album, has the heavy hashish sound—fuzz guitar, empassioned vocals and eastern percussion—that makes turkish psych so savoury to the rest of the world; middle eastern-ized rock with acid fuzz guitar and electric piano, plus eastern ethnic percussion and stringed instruments, and emotive vocals in turkish—very possibly as good as anything recorded by countryman erkin koray.

3 (-or uç, pronounced "ütsch"-) hürel made two nice lp's. the first lp (1972) might ask a bit more effort after first hearing for western ears / standards, because it sounds more turkish. their second record has a more remarkable incredible guitar playing and is surely nice to trace. give it enough time. their single collection has been nicely reissued with a booklet by ada müzik (-several of the b & w pictures are taken from it-). a very nice compilation.

"unlike every other band in turkey, the three hürel brothers (feridun, onur and haldun) never played cover songs on stage or on record. feridun who wrote the songs and sang, played a double-necked instrument : one neck for guitar, the other for saz." g.a. & j.d.

"one of the most interesting groups of turkish progressive music, a legendary sound. 3 brothers, onur, haldun, feridun hurel: 3 hur-el. their first band was at 1966 "istanbul 4".. then 1970 3 hur-el with their special sound. first lp 1972. as an important differance, the three hurel brothers didn't play cover songs or turkish music compositions. feridun did the original composes and lyrics, and sang, also played a double-necked instrument : one neck for guitar, the other for turkish saz. was a great combination. with special drums, percussions and combination of west-east instruments, they created a new synthesis. that was a great progressive sound of 70's, with great rhythms. their second lp "hurel arsivi" , 1976, is their most important work (selections from singles) of the group, amazing rhytms, incredible guitar playing, some psych sounds and vocals... a must listen.guner

after their comeback in 1997, they recorded two cds for ada music. "efsane" (legend) in 1996 and "1953" in 1999. (i have "efsane" and i describe it as more plain turkish rock). though they used to be one of the most busy tour bands during early 70's, now they refuse to play live.

their first lp, a turkish psychedelic delight, culled from rare singles and released in 1972 in small quantities on diskotur (originals sell for $1000 and up nowdays) ; some of the very best turkish psych—less western in some ways than their great “arsivi” lp, but still with the same excellent acid fuzz guitar, empassioned vocals and eastern percussion that makes for memorable listening; if you ask us, and we know no one did, we say it belongs in every record collection.

wicked 1974 debut album (origs. on the dogan plakcilik label worth $1k+; here nor there but impressive nonetheless) from the bandleader oft referred to as the “turkish hendrix”... dusted eastern psych with plenty of guitar excess and exotic intonation. one of the few veritable classics...
world psychedelia press release...
“terrific heavy eastern raves and drones from turkey's legendary freaked-out psychedelic guitar guru; you must have this dense hashish-clouded classic if you consider yourself a fan of psychedelic music; fantastic sound quality on an album that basically collected some of koray's best singles tracks up to the date of its original release.”

remarks and conversations - 2001. erkin is going to be 59 soon, but the legend lives on. here are listed some collected conversations and sentences said by him in different situations:

erkin: - "music is nature itself, restriction is wrong..." (from saskin & eyvah 45's cover)

citizen: - you seem thoughtful today,

erkin: - better than thoughtless, huh.

citizen: - how, you seem alone.

erkin: - after now, not alone...

erkin: - "if we go to x's invitation, this not mean we go to xy's invitation."

erkin: - "there are 5 senses for the brain. you may lose one ability and life goes on,but if you lose the brain, all the 5 are useless."

erkin: - "people thinkin' that 'honest people are stupid' are hard to get a statue in the world. 'cos in the countries where the people are honest they think about that kind peoples are in fact stupid."

erkin: - "dear organizer! i'm not goin' to concert in order to get money for it,i'm getting money 'cos of i'm goin' and performin'." (this reminded me at a saying of moondog : people think that i'm dressed to rack attention, but in fact i track attention because i'm dressed as i do."

ozan: - hey, we were goin' to central bornova, why you drive into wrong way, goin'to karsiyaka (,jokin') ?

erkin: - we're almost in the road, and so is karsiyaka... (bornova 'n karsiyaka are districts)

erkin: - if your girlfriend pulls you back and goes to another invitation with her friends, there's no need to go there and disturb them all. if she goes, she goes, you have to pull her too, huh. this is the difference between a teenage and a 58 years old man.

erkin: - we always fought but not with our hands, just with our ideas 'cos we'r all hippies, and while we grow up we just want peace. i don't want to talk further 'cos i think lennon was killed for his peace ideas...

erkin: - i'm not afraid of my craft. if time called me to do something before, i went and performed. never think to give account for it to someone, everyone can think in different ways, they're free. i trust on my wrist so i can perform in a small restaurant or in a stadium for 4000 people as now,and never give account for it. before my situation needed to do like that, i did, and when it happens again, i do like i did before, never take offence at that.

erkin: - before i fought with street vagabonds for havin' long hair. i took a knife to defend myself. i have tons of knife scars in my body, you can see some in my face. i'm still lost in amazement myself how i am still alive. but i think god saw me and thought that i had to live 'cos i'm goin' to do good things, so i live. at last i can say that there's a nice view.

friend: - hey erkin, you dropped your leather jacket (erkin drives so fast at that time)

erkin: - f**k it, i can't stop, i'm almost drivin' fast. (they leave jacket on the road)

erkin: - the neighbour's house was burnin' when we were talkin'. noises were coming from street. i ask ask aydin to have a look, aydin asked ataman the same, ataman asked sedat, always the same queue, because after a while when aydin had a look and added "the neighbour's house is burning". we all said "okay, good" then we continued to talk where we stopped. (yeralti dortlusu early 70's)

awesome! a slightly (just slightly) more-legit mogollar cd to replace that weird ‘transcribed-from-vinyl’ one i had in the past from the turkish music club.

this is actually a beautifully remastered version of a pricey lp reissue that came out a few years back (one which still hasn’t made its way out of my dj bag), which itself was made out to look on all accounts like a ‘ethnographic survey’ record. it is, instead, in my mind, the anadolu pop classic... mixing some not-quite-equal temperament electric organ with hand-drumming, electric saz & bass, etc... really singular/unique. i have as much love in my bones for these young turkish scamps as i do for the free-wheeling spirit of träd gräs och stenar and the like. these tunes will get in your head, make nest, not leave. ever.

listen to the sound-sample for an example (if you dare...)

a reissue of the 1971 album from this classic turkish combo aka mogollar. a strange collection of melodic crypto-folk instrumentals with a weird zombies/animals touch. originally released in france on the guilde internationale du disque label, the record was awarded the coveted grand prix du disque from the acadamie charles cros.
