november 2008 release ; believe this was only the second performance by the trio of venerable filmmaker/musician michael snow, alan licht, and aki onda (essentially a synth/guitar/tapes “power trio”) ...

impressive that they’re showing signs of a refined sense of interplay even this early on in the trio’s lifespan ... whereas alan’s duo w/ aki seemed to tone things down a bit ; it’s great to hear him go batshit via some high-gain / heavily effected electric guitar freakoutery. aki’s even taking something of a back-seat here to snow’s errant synth squeals, although the mangled tape does cut through the mix from time to time ...

michael snow (synthétiseur cat, radio à ondes courtes, piano)
alan licht (guitare électrique, électroniques)
aki onda (cassettes, électroniques).

the snow/licht/onda concert was proof that the most unconventional of instruments can be used to create imaginative soundscapes. canadian pianist/electronic manipulator michael snow has led a life of diversity as a celebrated avant-garde filmmaker and improvising artist. new york-based guitarist alan licht has operated in a variety of musical spheres, influenced by everything from the minimalism of steve reich to no wave bands like sonic youth. japanese-born, new york-based aki onda is an equally intrepid artist who, aside from composition, production and photography, uses a most unlikely instrument -- a cassette walkman -- to create a personal view of music as texture and experience.

the trio's hour-long performance, while not its first, found them still very much in exploratory territory, looking for ways to shape sounds ranging from spare and atmospheric to dense and industrial. while there was little relationship to the familiar, the set had its own form, even if suggestive of a relentless barrage of sound. snow, at various points, put a portable radio up to a microphone, broadcasting whatever he happened to find, including a radio announcer discussing a festival taking place in victoriaville. like many other moments during this often intense spatial-temporal audioscape, serendipity reigned -- the postmodern self-referentiality of the radio announcement being a prime example. but perhaps what made the set so interesting was, above all, the audience' awareness that many of the sounds being produced by snow, licht and onda were as new to the artists as to the audience. improvisation as texture, not as rhythm, melody or fixed form.

an historical concert

borbetomagus and hijokaidan sharing the stage. noise music fans are getting goosebumps reading those words. others, well... others should be scared, very scared! two monster proponents of noise esthetics, representing two continents whose cultures have often been described as incompatible and yet meet in the celebration of noise. purifying noise annihilating nationalities and differences. noise inviting us to a fabulous sonic orgy where energy will reign over precision of execution, where violence is sublimated through strings, reeds and skins, where artistic research consists in destroying over and over what one has managed to build, in order to reinvent it. two sax players, two guitar players, an electronics player, a singer and a drummer, all working hard to convince you that noise can be a lot more than noise, but exists mostly for making some noise!

christian marclay: tables tournantes et disques
thurston moore: guitare et amplificateur
lee ranaldo: guitare, «krackelbox» et divers objets a meeting of three great musicians of today’s music!

wall o’ sound: last week in victoriaville’s colisee, a huge venue that normally hosts hockey matches, christian marclay was up there spinning discs as he’s been known for doing since before djs invaded the culture world. he was creating a wild sound world with records played forward, backward, in the cracks, or as trampolines for bouncing needles. he is also prone to break them into bits or fling them out to the audience, showing the greatest respect for his medium by reinventing usage.

flanking him were two rock stars - thurston moore and lee ranaldo, the sonic conjurers of sonic youth - coaxing all manner of weird sounds from their electric guitars. feedback rose and fell in heaving crescendos, drum sticks were inserted between strings, and for an hour and change, a wall of beautiful noise was erected, then smashed to bits, with no pesky backbeats or melodies to upset the mesmeric abandon. this was the apt, affectingly climactic event of the 16th annual new music festival in victoriaville, quebec, still one of the most unique festivals of its kind on the continent.

also performing was mr. haino, who sings in a ghostly choirboy voice with his deafeningly loud japanese improvising rock trio, fushitsusha. the mysterious mr. haino, who never appears without sunglasses, an all-black getup and a wooden walking staff (to direct the band through noh-like dramatic routines), is another perfect example of “actuelle” logic. he is a musician in his late 40’s whose influences are, in no-particular order, iannis xenakis’s electro-acoustic music, gregorian chant, the sludgy proto-heavy-metal band blue cheer and the japanese improvised-rock scene of the late 1960’s. “but if someone calls me a blues musician,” he mused very late friday night in his hotel room, sunglasses still affixed, “i am very happy.

- ben ratliff, new york times

the japanese guitar monster threw a cloak of black noise over late night show goers who go awed by his trio of power electric bass, sleep heavy drums and his own guitar attack, which he set aside briefly to conduct his rhythm section with a fancy walking stick. later, i saw him part a crowd with it, moses style. no one questioned his authority, either on stage or in the streets.

had forgotten about this one ; a nice disc of guitar/electronic duets by a young jim o’rourke and one of his many mentors, henry kaiser ... pretty far removed from the through-and-through avant shred-fest you might expect (although there are, of course, a few pieces heavily involving kaiser’s impossibly notey lines) - long bits of blown-out guitar drone (shades of “remove the need”) are hedged with bursts of delay-line static ...
