| november 2011 release ; ... nice to see a new title on michael hohendorf’s resurrected twisted knister label (responsible for that amazing thorax-wach reissue, amongst other things) ...
... originally recorded in 1996 by the idea fire company offshoot of scott foust, karla borecky, and mike popovich, this set of short songs (and i do mean songs ; this project is as close to the electronic pop music of yore as foust & co. have ever deviated, with several moments reminding me of raymond scott et.al - listen to the sound-sample) features some lovely singing from karla alongside the dream / womb-like synthesizer & bass tapestries of the other two, recalling the early 80’s minimal-synth wave inasmuchas the darker corners of the uk-diy post-punk sector ... |

karla borecky: keyboard, voice, tapes, synth scott foust: guitar, synth, tapes, voice, radio, bass mike popovich: bass, voice, drums, percussion, radio, guitar, keyboard
recorded at swill radio studios, 1996 digitally transferred by robert beerman remastered by zupe, 2011
the pickle factory is karla borecky and scott foust from the idea fire company plus long-time collaborator mike popovich. they were active in the mid- to late-1990s and released the album »our pledge« on swill radio at the time. »our anthems« was recorded in 1996 but remained unreleased until now. the sound is somewhat similar to ifco, although within at least some sort of a song structure. the 12 pieces on the lp present themes and sketches of atmospheric musical beauty created by synths, haunting voices and guitars with percussive elements, minimal rhythms and, of course some radio static!
all the pieces on this lp are anthems indeed, the soundtrack for staring at random stuff and thinking you're in the middle of slow motion! simple beauty, like all or most of the work by the troupes gathered around the house of karla borecky and scott foust, who won't be on a photo without sunglasses, much like cash would always wear black i guess, with that difference that foust only wears neon yellow. give em some air, this is seriously a beautiful record!
