| i noticed the term “minimal-synth” for the first time about a year ago - in a description on ebay attempting to “sell” one of the berio/berberian lps... odd i thought... then i started seeing it crop up in cahoots with the early 80s german “zick zack” scene, and on obscure records reissued by the fantastic vinyl on demand label... but i wasn’t until howie stelzer turned me on to the joys of john bender’s oeuvre that i began to “get it”...
i’m always touting the joy(s) of “synth freakouts” - yet of course people were in fact using these things as musical instruments in the 70s/80s and not just as “sound effects generators”
what we have here is a crazy good example of the german kind of “minimal synth” music - essentially two teenagers in their bedroom(s) ca. 1979/81 laying it down to tape... lo-fi drones and warbles, but also little chord progressions and... dareisay... songs. this is pretty much essential for the zick-zack or die todliche doris / der plan fan who just can’t get enough of ironic/non-ironic art-damaged electronicus from the second golden age. |

| | a first-time-on-vinyl reissue of the obscure euch geht's ja noch viel zu gut cassette originally released in 1979 by berlin-based new wave duo thorax-wach. six instrumental and six vocal tracks about eating children, old people, the body, and german serial killers, played with two korg ms20 synths and a borrowed guitar, in a style not unlike the minimal electronics of der plan and some of the zick zack bands of the same time. released with the full cooperation of the artists. |
