turtles dream press release...
tdcd-04 : kan mikami
"bachi, kashiwa mura kara" cd-21min11

nine songs recorded on feb 16 and 17, 2004 by françois dietz at studio ccam in vandoeuvre-lès-nancy during kan mikami’s french tour.

kan mikami : voice, guitar
fabrice eglin : feedback guitar on 9

kan mikami is a guitar player, singer and songwriter grown up in kodomari, a fishing village on the east coast of japan. a student in goshogawara, in 1967 he published a first book of poetry inspired by a teacher close to the beat generation. in 1969 he moved to tokyo to become a cook. there he discovered the students' social movement at the same time he got exposed to rock, jazz and contemporary music. these were times of radical protest against the establishment and a far too prudish culture, and asking for sexual liberation. in the 70s, with some other folksingers, kan mikami personified this generation through lyrics in turn erotic or obscene, sometimes violent or surrealist. during his heyday he recorded first for the independent label urc then for victor and columbia. then he disappeared only to reappear ten years later on tokyo’s underground scene acting in yakuza films and on stage with shoji terayama, then recording more than ten solo albums for the cult japanese label psf, a contemporary counterpart to esp. kan mikami has played with the great outsiders of improv, folk and japanese rock: with keiji haino and toshi ishizuka in vajra, with masayoshi urabe, kazuki tomokawa, yosuke yamashita, akira sakata and the late double-bass player motoharu yoshizawa.

universal songs . beyond language and meaning stands the blues. not the one the gis brought with their pack in japan, but kan mikami's own vision seen through the prism of enka music *. such songs we cannot find in popular music nowadays. the blues, its spirit and its agonizing mood comparable to the portuguese fado. black songs, free form songs, with their beauty and violence, rudimentary electric enka ill-treated blues tore to pieces. we could almost hear blind willie johnson's ghost activating the guitar and the voice. kan mikami strums his guitar with violence and sensuality, telling stories hardly ever told in japanese songs, at the edge of black humor, surrealism and dada. and his voice is unique, nearing violence, screams and a sticky melancholy.

" bachi " was recorded by françois dietz at the end of kan mikami french tour at studio ccam in vandoeuvre-lès-nancy. nine songs where the voice bears new inflexions never heard on his previous recordings, maybe close to an exotic folklore as dreamt by our western imagination. sombre and moving chants skinned by his harsh voice, with guitar on the background, haunting lavish blues. the last track is "9", an improvisation sung in french with fabrice eglin drawing ghostly feedbacks from his guitar.

* enka: sentimental popular songs usually played in karaoke bars.
