um / ascoltaregiraffe (refined) b/w fatty parts for a good match” picture-disc twelve inch single record

  • um - giraffe (refined)
  • ascoltare - fatty parts for a good match
november 2005 split between these two acts; mr. um with his recent ep on strange lights (look above), mr. ascoltare with his tripel label. despite my near-total aversion to picture-disc releases with vivid images of food on them (i’m thinking of that vomit-launches 10” on hot-air, specifically... i didn’t eat a donut for like 2 years after that one) this is quite a nice object, and the sounds contained therein twist and turn around genre-signifiers like ramsey lewis on the great plains of the infinite. good snatches of weird bedroom songcraft, some nice electro-acoustic moments, and good-old beatsmithing...
tripel press release...
ascoltare works as an electronic sound artist in cambridge. his labels tripel and dubbel have released six records thus far, varying from experimental bootlegs to more texturally refined glitch compositions. tripel's 4 th release is there most ambitious to date. a picture disk lp mastered by the gaeoudjiparl (goodiepal) (mainpal inv , v/vm , datanorm ) at the famous dubplates & mastering in berlin.

vocalising alongside minute blocks of digital yuck, um struts like a broken, funkless version of harco pront ( music for speakers ) occasionally knocking knees with the residents ( euroralph ) and voks ( dekorder ). recent output includes the wonderful africa is a fridge 7” ( strange lights ) (dj-ed by felix kubin and jason forrest, amongst others) and several homemade cdr releases. giraffe is one such record and tripel's ‘refined' version borrows the best of that here. fifteen digital memoirs anchored in lacquer; abstruse um stories are echoing further and forever more. fans of original and best, take heed!

plundering the world of the reality tv chef and its surrounding culinary language, ascoltare serves us a yummy cut/up featuring choice sound bites. acoustic instruments rejuvenated by digital techniques and numerous production values serve a generous spread for the discerning listener. sounds range from jerome noetinger ( metamkine ) style electrical squeals to more delicately positioned acoustic sounds. eccentric organ licks and music-library inspired textures float effortlessly around meaty montages of iron chef judges and british foodies. added ingredients include rick stein, keith floyd and gordon ramsey all of which undergo the pitch up & down treatment. stein's continual whining can be heard amongst bontempi drones and glocken rattles. noises automate attentively through narrative text and the occasional contrast of merzbow style fuck-blasts infused with passionate chatter is fresh and humorous. also provided at the end of this 12” (specifically cut for all you dj's!) are choice selections of gordon ramsey insults.

for those who continually search for new musical oddities tripel's 4 th should not disappoint. strictly limited to 500 copies, buy this super ridiculous picture plate before it fulfils its charity shop destiny.

andrew colemandemons” compact disc

  • demons
  • way to go
  • fight or flight
  • down pour
  • forgotten you
just a really nice set of guitar-computer-electronic instrumentals from mr andrew coleman, known for his records on thrill jockey, as well as those from back in the golden age of drill n’ bass via the (his?) bovinyl label. i had the pleasure of playing a show with mr. coleman a few months back in cambridge, and his solemn roland gr set was a thing of beauty - nice to be able to re-create that evening here in the comfort of my own home!
tripel press release...
after 2001's highly respected "everything was beautiful and nothing hurt" on the thrill jockey label (tortoise, oval, so), andrew coleman (aka animals on wheels from ninja tune, bovinyl) is back with a delicate mixture of rustic / digital 'ponder-phonics'.

like xela's tangled wool (type) or greg davis's curling pond woods (carpark), demons main instrument of choice is the humble acoustic guitar. however unlike the aforementioned releases where the guitar is predominately used in the foreground, demons employs a more understated and subdued approach.

coleman feeds and manipulates sections of recorded guitar and other external sounds (field recordings/prepared piano) through digital environments. acoustic vibrations are attentively mangled and fed through coleman's granular mangler. the detritus from this microtonal collision creates warm resonance that fires both short and long. demons guitar parts in juxtaposition with electronic programming and dsp trickery, complements the digital interior in which it resides. his delicate use of subtle dynamics, microscopic production and 'the less is more' aesthetic enables the listener to discover hidden corners within demons curious musical arrangements.

demons should not disappoint those who like their experimental music to be both challenging and accessible or fans of coleman's previous album (everything was beautiful and nothing hurt). comparisons could include the acoustic/digital processed approach of artists such as colleen (lo recordings), fennesz (mego/touch), four tet (domino, leaf) or oval (thrill jockey/mille plateaux). however it should be stated that although these artists share a common thread, their work is still undeniably unique.

coleman chooses to build his musical foundations with both traditional and modern elements (wood & fibreglass?), which in return produce an altogether new piece of material that will retain its validity regardless of current music fashion.

debut full-length from dave henson, a wash of computer-sonics, zonked melodies, and some very nice, crispy cut-up beats in the schematic/pan-sonic/mego mould. some of this rings as true as the “classic” off-idm of anthony manning (in fact this really wouldn’t have been out of place on the irdial label.) takes far more chances than most, and henson certainly has a unique style that beckons a closer listen...
tripel press release...
launching new uk label tripel records, ascoltare's debut finds the space between electronica and experimental rock. this new project from dave henson, previously of post-rockers gwei-lo (bella union), is gwei-lo (bella union), is an intensely focused standoff between bittersweet melodic warmth and gritty, abstract precision.

walking the same kinds of intuitive melodic paths as that project, with ascoltare, henson's sound has evolved to include a diversity of influences from vintage and lofi electronica, digital noise, and beyond. shifting, hand-assembled beats are bound with fragile yet quietly optimistic instrumental lines, and natural and lofi digital textures, to form a complex and constantly unfolding sound.

like lone and determined hybridisers such as four tet, ascoltare explores the still-fertile territory between electronica and other genres. other reference points could include vert (sonig), the post-electronica of the carpark label (greg davis, hrvatski), and the frenetic sonic moodswings of warp's chris clark.

ascoltaregallery” compact disc recordable

  • assassin & son
  • on a natural charge
  • vile haze
  • the good ass turned over
  • somewhere there are the absent
3rd small-run cdr release, housed in an oversize printed flat-pack.
tripel press release...
gallery is ascoltare's (aka dave henson of gwei-lo) latest bastard-pop related release. originally compiled as a support show for dj/rupture during his 'special gun powder' performance in cambridge, gallery contains an explosive set of experimental electronica following on from last year's glitch-ridden predecessors drugs and mutiny in stereo.

inspired by cult fashion designers iceberg history (a clothing company infamous for hijacking cartoon characters and spotlighting them in an original style), dubbel records (tripel's cdr subsidiary) continues on with its investigative thirst for using found voice and spoken word to create an altogether new narrative.

beginning with an mc reiterating his thuggish past, assassin & son develops glitchy flute melodies. continually building, bulbous percussive noises sprout underneath found-sounds which swirl violently to force proceedings. slowly unravelling an increasingly moody spectre since its initial saunter, assassin & son conjures powerful images of manga cartoons and future sound worlds.

on a natural charge finds odb (r.i.p) rapping in the most unusual of musical predicaments. in between minimal classical arrangements and up-tempo drum clicks; his voice thunderously enters after a grandiose vibes section. as previously heard in drugs, henson utilises a gruff vocal to further intensify their original neurotic performance. vile haze on the other hand makes good use of rhythm. comparisons could include the more disjointed groove work of sensational (word sound) or the half erased click-productions of senking (raster noton). as practised in soundtrack music, henson uses simple recurring melodies as a means of reinstating the narrative. combined with jarred rhythm, this juxtaposition of "takemitsu esque melody" as repeated in the good ass turned over soon dissipates any feelings of shallow plagiarism.

other surprises are spoken words from henry chinanski as heard in the good ass turned over and somewhere there are the absent. the former bridges on from vile haze with a long drone arrangement that eventually leads to ascoltare's infatuated click grooves and stoned fx.

chinanski tells the tale of a man whose unrequited love leads him to remove his "sexual machinery". his voice sounding more unsettling when pitched up to sound as if helium inhalation had just occurred.

the album's finale, somewhere there are the absent shows off henson's capability for extreme drum programming. a monstrous drum-rock gallop is placed against abrasive caustic digital lines. sounds saw their way through cracked asbestos and explode at the right points of text before rupturing on a "scott burns-engineered growl".

considering the vast quantity of electronica records that are made available, gallery's superb selection of intense otherworldly sounding electronica should deservedly gain some attention. limited to 250 copies and housed in an a4 grip-lock bag with corresponding (black as fuck!) artwork, dubbel's homemade cd's are proving to be more irregular with each release. gallery should not disappoint those wanting to hear something more left of centre than the usual crop of bastardised electronica.

2nd in the series of small-run release from ascoltare...
tripel press release...
new name and work from dave henson, a mentalist individual who has realised that in order for himself to remain relatively sane he must abandon music altogether. however, the likelihood of this scenario feels impossible for a sensitive man whose love of music weighs far more important than a harboured mental disposition.

ascoltare (from fhe italian word for `to listen') is fine-grained and structured electronica with environmental and acoustic samples giving a spatial and organic feel. as well as continuing the explorations of melody of his previous work in mouse finding the key and gwei-lo, ascoltare has a diversity encompassing excursions into abstract dub and experimental texture.
