anla courtistribute to calcium” seven inch single record

  • part 1 (6:20)
  • part 2 (6:20)
whoah... super-demonized psychedelic scrape-throb from the “musical director” of reynols, anla courtis (recently seen in tandem with lasse marhaug on the antifrost label, culver on riot season, and makoto kawabata on one of the 10k labels that releases amt-related solo projects), coming off the mutant half-brother of tony conrad & faust’s “the pyre of angus was in kathmandu/the death of the composer was in 1962” played at 16rpm...

wasn’t quite prepared for the quality of sound here (i’ve never been the biggest reynols fan) but this smokes. guitars chime in only the lowest, dirtiest fasion, the toba violin (apparently: a one-stringed instrument constructed for centuries by native argentinians) occupies the upper registers; somewhere off in the distance someone is singing backwards in sanskrit. both older than time itself and yet-to-be-born. massive...
tonschacht press release...
artist: anla courtis
title: tribute to calcium
format: 7"
cat #: tons019

"these are the first pieces i've ever recorded with the toba violin. i was delighted by the raw sound of this native instrument and my aim was to explore its possiblities beyond the traditional approach, that's why i decided to combine it with layers of electric guitar. the recording documents this exploration process and maybe keeps fresh the spirit of this first encounter." (anla courtis)

"sprung from the bowels of reynols, guitarist anla courtis has produced an incredible melange of guitar, toba violin and tape music called tribute to calcium. the sounds roll on like ducks down a cement mountain.squeedles of upper register amp noise curl along the edge of clouds on one side, the other is more low-down - like elephants on the killing floor. it's a really great record, and probably the manifestation of a new sort of guitar sound.”

a. courtis: electric guitar, toba violin & tapes

recorded at ornitivo studios, buenos aires, argentina somewhen in 2003.

thanks to wolfgang & tonschacht, pauline oliveros, damo suzuki, flia. courtis and the tobas.

raphael smarzochspitrobot” seven inch single record

  • spitrobot goes shopping (3:36)
  • the return of the spitrobot (3:34)
debut release from this young, köln-based guitarist and radio-show host (had the pleasure of meeting this cat for an interview, then going shopping with him for haribo in downtown köln a few years back.) the light fantastic is tripped via an arsenal of zombie-finger apparatuses... hits you like a tons of bricks in the maw fresh out the gate with a peal of high-arc electric feedback... this takes us into a pained stretch of bias-control battle that does not lack a certain runzelstirn & gurglestock-ish charm. on the flip is a much more concentrated overdubbing of multiple layers of distorted, dissonant electric fizz; ghost-echoes of dylan “prick decay” nyoukis’ recent output coupled with the home-soldered electronic chomp of nautical almanac et.al.

there was a time, a glorious time where buckets full of energy-yeah! 7” records of tortured gtr-skree landed on my doorstep at a vicious rate; these salad days are long over which makes the appearance on such young blood something to swallow roman candles over. a promising start for a young noise-avid...

greg davisgather / scatter” seven inch single record

  • scatter (4:32)
  • two skylines (1:03)
  • gather (6:18)
an absolute monster of a record from greg, in the form of a set of pure “process music” pieces for computer and a lone 0.25 second sample... the 4-bit squeech of a casio sk-1’s snare drum. on the three pieces herein: scatter is a silence-ridden, pointillist catalogue of carefully-lain lo-bit iterations, which segues into two skylines, a loose minute-plus of collected thematic beeping. gather is an amazing through-composed electro-acoustic coalescence of the sounds & themes introduced on the a-side... by far the most overtly noisy and aggressive piece of music i’ve heard from greg on record (makes the “clouds as edges” ep on grounded sound like candy floss in comparison.)

seriously, if this doesn’t convince you that greg is at the top of his game (even better, that he was already at the top of his game back in 2001!) you need a serious egg-shell cracking. awesome...
tonschacht press release...
artist: greg davis
title: gather/scatter
format: 7"
cat #: tons017

"this record was created entirely from a casio sk1 drum machine sample. this sample was then processed in real-time using a custom-built max/msp sound environment. 'scatter' was created by subtracting (or scattering) these sounds, processing them further and adding silences until i achieved a desired lesser density. 'gather' was created by adding (or gathering) these sounds, processing them further and overlaying them until i achieved a desired greater density. all of these sounds were then carefully arranged with soundedit16 to create the finished pieces. 'two skylines' was created by taking the processed source sample and processing it further with sonicworx powerbundle. then the waveforms of the left and the right channels were rectified in such a way as to resemble two city skylines. these pieces were created between the late winter of 2001 and the early fall of 2002. this record is dedicated to john cage." janek schaeferearly electronic compositions” seven inch single record

  • call jet mistry (1999) (4:05)
  • the world of dr mm (soundtrack mirror mix) (1998) (3:32)
two “early” pieces (actually; from the late 90s) from this english sound-artist known otherwise for his turntable-based explorations (which are quite nice.) the a-side, call jet mistry, works some very “klassische” sounding analog-synth timbres across a swath of digital reverb noise and self-oscillating filter; fairly un-remarkable in and of itself actually (trying to be truthful here folks.) the world of dr mm on the b-side fares much better via a random-feeling selection of abstract beeping and fm-synthesis sounds; filter everything out above 8k and it would sound like a wdr piece from the early 1970s. always nice to hear an artist break out of his/her “mould” (well, nice 1/2 of the time at least...)
tonschacht press release...
artist: janek schaefer
title: early electronic compositions
format: 7"
cat #: tons016

"both of these compositions were produced while i was working freelance for de rijke marsh morgan architects in london. one afternoon i had a message to call a guy named 'jet mistry' who worked for the lift company thyssen. he was a chatty guy so we talked about names etc, and i decided to dedicate a track to his as i liked it so much. this was produced using an 'rs integrator' analogue patch bay synthesizer that i'd bought around then with the profits of working a 96 hours week on a new london park competition. another project we produced at the practice was a quirky, live, stop frame short video showcasing various projects for a touring architecture exhibition. i was asked to edit and produce the sound. side b is a 7" mix with the spoken sections removed." "this two-track 7”, brought to us by tonschacht is like a small dish of calamata olives. it isn’t going to fill you up, but it tastes very good and will have you licking your fingers after a few minutes. let the hipsters keep their trucker caps and electroclash,"fluxus, inc." is a flexing of the donna summer school of discocrash. bass jabs and horn stabs syncopate against the blisters of boiling breaks as a dancefloor doubledare for the moshers, idm headnodders, and innocent bystanders alike. to newcomers this track might take a few listens to fully digest, while those who haveseen mr. summer perform live know this song would easily fit anywhere in his energizing and entertaining sets. it isn’t quite the same without witnessing the fullproduction of polyester suits and victory laps taken through the audience, but it is appetizing enough to have you dropping the needle back a few times before auditioning the flip side.

jazzkammerknitter” seven inch single record

soundbites from john hegre and lasse marhaug (and a little help from alexander rishaug), fresh from their collaboration with merzbow...
tonschacht press release...
artist: jazzkammer

format: 7"

sämtliche musik von jazzkammer 2001.
zusätliche sounds auf seite eins von alexander rishaug.

knitter is the first 7" from this norwegian duo - guitarist, improviser and composer john hegre (also in der brief) and lasse marhaug, one of the most productive musicians in the international noise/experimental underground of the last 10 years (also in del and owner of the jazzassin records label) – this time with alexander rishaug who already participated on the last jazzkammer– longplayer "pancakes" (smalltown supersound).

this swedish label also released rolex, a remix-album of their first two cds with contributions by merzbow, thurston moore, pimmon and mayn others. jazzkammer combines timbre sound textures, drones, chrashing noise, digitalia, field recordings, turntables, static electric atmospheres, samplers sine waves and location recordings, all used in free improvisation to create fragmented, eclectic and relentless yet focused and massive collages. a-sia might remind you of mixture between the hi-speed electronics of belgian irregularities scratch pet land and the microsound-turntablism like otomo yoshihide or martin ttreault, b-sia begins like pop defined by the tochnit aleph crew, but slowly between layers of distortions there rise sweet, fenneszian melody as if they were re-arranged by rudolf e.ber.

“three tracks from the band of the 00's. the title track is our full frontal assault on glitch techno (with catchy vocals). side 1 finishes with a vinyl disaster known as "landing party." side 2 is consumed by "the crucial failure of authenticity," a slow edgy track which is one of our best. the new peculiars march on and on.”

minitbootleg” seven inch single record

  • bootleg (6:00)
  • four (5:53)
just a few back in, in case you missed it the first time ‘round

the first single on tonschacht was this totally sorted single by this australian duo, effectively putting both act and label on the global sound-research map. tonschacht’s unique aesthetic crossing the known lo-fi dictum with new approaches wove a world-wide fanbase of obsessive fanboy collector types almost immediately (myself included). four years on (this single appeared in 1999), little has changed (the records themselves are still mega-heavy thanks to former czech-republic pressing policies, your fingers leave big ole’ smudge marks when found within 4 feet of the sleeves, etc...).
