berkeley guitar

berkeley guitar is a collection of new recordings by three of the bay area’s finest young acoustic guitarists: sean smith, adam snider, and matt baldwin.

the city of berkeley and the acoustic guitar share a rich, decades-long history — most notably as the sixties home base of takoma records, which released landmark recordings by john fahey, robbie basho, leo kottke and many others. this history inspired three young guitarists from the bay area to create a document of the present-day guitar scene.

charles gayletime zones

time zones is charles gayle's first solo piano album of all original compositions. although he is known primarily as a fiery tenor saxophonist with a sound that blends the spirituality of john coltrane with the free expression of albert ayler, his first instrument was the piano.

since putting his long and storied years as a homeless new york street musician behind him, and recording for the first time in the late 1980's, he has steadily integrated piano into his performances.

richard crandell - in the flower of our youth

in the flower of our youth, originally released on the private press label cutthroat records in 1980, was richard crandell's first lp. his tune 'rebecca' was famously covered by admirer leo kottke on his chewing pine album. crandell has gone on to record several other guitar albums, as well as two mbira recordings for john zorn's tzadik label. crandell's music has recently been featured on tompkins square's imaginational anthem vol. 3, as well as the guitar compilation wayfaring strangers: guitar soli.

james blackshaw - the cloud of unknowing

when uk-native james blackshaw plays his 12-string guitar, something spiritual takes place. performing and recording since 2003, his name is frequently mentioned as one of the foremost modern solo acoustic guitarists. now at the age of 25, blackshaw, an untrained musician born and still residing in the suburban environs of greater london, draws as much inspiration from early religious music, south-asian folk music and composers such as arvo part, simeon ten holt, steve reich and charlemagne palestine as he does from john fahey, robbie basho and the early takoma records roster, constantly breaking boundaries in what could be conceived as a somewhat limited medium. in his part improvised and part written songs, blackshaw makes expert use of eastern and western scales, chord changes reminiscent of european classical music and incredibly intricate fingerpicking patterns to make a sound that is both challengingly minimalistic, yet warm and approachable to anybody who might hear it, with a rare sensitivity that conveys both immense beauty, hope and sadness.

james has toured japan, europe, scandinavia and uk in 2005 and 2006, playing with artists such as sir richard bishop, espers, brightblack morning light, feathers, greg davis, jack rose, marissa nadler, josephine foster, seiichi yamamoto of the boredoms and christina carter.

spencer moore

88 year old country singer spencer moore played a tent show with the carter family in the 30's, and was recorded in 1959 by alan lomax, who called him "as genuine as a rail fence." this is his debut album.

in our headlong rush into the age of ipods and laptops, it is reassuring to know that there are still people around like spencer moore.  in a rustic mountain home perched on a green hillside of the blue ridge mountains of southwest virginia, spencer moore remains almost untouched by modernity.  he provides his own entertainment on an acoustic guitar now a half century old. knowing between 500-600 songs by heart, he can sing you most any old-time song known in this part of the blue ridge.

born into a family of 11 children on february 7, 1919 in the northwestern corner of north carolina, spencer was introduced to old-time music early on.  after the family moved across the mountains to laurel bloomery the moore family was exposed to more old-time music via their neighbor, the blind fiddler and singer, g.b. graysonspencer's father acquired a wind-up phonograph and records.  hearing records by the likes of charlie poole, jimmie rodgers , riley puckett and their neighbor, g.b. grayson, stoked the fires of spencer's love of old-time music that much more.  a few dollars bought him a guitar from sears and roebuck via the mail.  in 1933, at age 14, spencer attended the famous whitetop mountain folk festival. there he heard mrs. eleanor roosevelt sing "three little babes," an old british ballad also known as "the wife of usher's well."

by the late 1930's, spencer and his brother joe were performing publicly themselves as the moore brothers in the delmore brothers style. it was during this period that the moores performed in a tent-show with the carter family.

in 1959, famed folklorist alan lomax along with shirley collins came into the hills of southwest virginia to collect blue ridge mountain music. lomax recorded a number of pieces by spencer including jimmy sutton and the girl i left behind. the performances were released on atlantic and prestige records.

spencer moore is a living link to our musical past. he knew and played with the carter family, g. b. grayson and henry whittier. such links are becoming increasing rare. he is a treasure we should cherish.

charlie louvin | live at shake it records

country music hall of fame legend charlie louvin co-wrote and recorded some of the most enduring country songs of all time with his brother ira. charlie recorded this live album in may 2007 during a non-stop tour in support of his acclaimed new album on tompkins square. in fact, this past year has seen the 80 year old tour with lucinda williams, play major festivals like bonnaroo, share bills with ryan adams and neko case, and release a video for the song "ira".

the louvin brothers songs featured on charlie louvin, and on this live cd, have been handed down by gram parsons, johnny cash, the byrds, emmylou harris and uncle tupelo, and recently made it into live sets by the likes of beck and jack white. charlie's influence on a new generation is clear.

this live set captures charlie at one of his many "in store" appearances. it's a stripped down field recording from a true living legend.

murder ballads & songs of disaster 1913-1938

a landmark 3-cd box set

in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s, the depression gripped the nation. it was a time when songs were tools for living. a whole community would turn out to mourn the loss of a member and to sow their songs like seeds. this collection is a wild garden grown from those seeds.” – tom waits, from the introduction

songs of death, destruction and disaster, recorded by black and white performers from the dawn of american roots recording are here, assembled together for the first time. whether they document world-shattering events like the sinking of the titanic or memorialize long forgotten local murders or catastrophes, these 70 recordings – over 30 never before reissued – are audio messages in a bottle reflecting a lost world where age old ballads rubbed up against songs inspired by the day's headlines.

featuring beautifully remastered recordings by the some of the cornerstones of american vernacular recording such as charlie patton, ernest stoneman, furry lewis, charlie poole and uncle dave macon, these songs tell of life and death struggles forever immortalized on these rare and compelling 78 rpms. produced and annotated by the grammy winning team of christopher king and henry “hank” sapoznik with an introduction by tom waits, the accompanying 48-page three-cd anthology designed by grammy award winning susan archie brims with many eye-popping historic images never before reproduced.

robbie basho - venus in cancer

robbie basho released venus in cancer in 1969 on the blue thumb label. after five albums for the takoma label in the 60's, basho had cemented his reputation alongside john fahey and leo kottke as one of the most brilliant guitarists of his generation. his wide range of musical influences from around the globe set him apart from other blues-based players, incorporating arabic, himalayan and indian themes; japanese and chinese scales, and classical and european folk music. all are on magnificent display on this sprawling, spiritually-charged album.

released on cd for the very first time, the album has been remastered from the original tapes. the package includes original album artwork and new appreciations from windham hill label founder will ackerman, basho college friend and fellow takoma recording artist max ochs, german guitarist steffen basho-junghans, and pete townshend of the who

twenty years since his death in 1986, basho's legend continues to grow, having strongly influenced a new generation of guitarists including jack rose, ben chasny (six organs of admittance) and james blackshaw, among many others.

the first ever live recording by robbie basho, a version of "kowaka d'amour" from venus in cancer, can be found on tompkins square's recent compilation, imaginational anthem, vol. 2.

james blackshaw | litany of echoes

initially inspired by the guitarists of the 60's takoma label to teach himself fingerpicking, london-based musician james blackshaw writes pieces primarily for solo 12-string guitar that share more in common with the minimalist works of composers such as philip glass, steve reich and charlemagne palestine, as well as french composers claude debussy and erik satie, than the blues/raga influence of his peers. using drones, overtones and repeating patterns alongside a strong inclination for melody, blackshaw creates instrumental music that is intelligent, hypnotic and unashamedly sentimental.

blackshaw's previous 2007 album for tompkins square, the cloud of unknowing garnered huge acclaim from all corners of the globe from both listeners and critics alike, receiving effusive reviews, and earning him a slot opening in the uk and us for jose gonzalez during fall 2007. the cloud of unknowing was also listed as one of the 50 best albums of 2007 by the wire and pitchfork.

litany of echoes, blackshaw's sixth studio album in five years, shows a more mature, focused and, on the whole, accessible approach to composition. while the album often feels darker and more introspective in nature than on previous releases, many of the songs have a huge-sounding, classical quality to them. with blackshaw adding some glistening piano work for the first time and fran bury returning to play swarms of sweeping string parts for violin and viola, litany of echoes is a truly original, affecting and timeless album from a guitarist/composer coming into his own.

contemporary flamenco-tinged guitar pieces from peter walker ; a nice adjunct to the “a raga for peter walker” set ...

peter walker - echo of my soul

maverick guitarist peter walker's first album in 40 years !

peter walker came up in the cambridge ma and greenwich village folk scenes of the sixties. he recorded two albums for the vanguard label in the late sixties in a style best described as american folk-raga. he studied with ravi shankar and ali akbar khan, and was dr. timothy leary's musical director, organizing music for the lsd advocate’s “celebrations.”

peter walker was actually a bigger influence on my acoustic playing than john fahey or robbie basho.”  – ben chasny, six organs of admittance

a raga for peter walker was released by tompkins square in 2006, featuring four new tracks from peter along with original, previously unreleased compositions by revered contemporary guitarists steffen basho-junghans, james blackshaw, greg davis, shawn david mcmillen, thurston moore, and jack rose

in recent years, walker has developed an intense interest in flamenco guitar and, through regular trips to spain, has been accepted into flamenco’s exclusive musical elite. peter states, "the music on this cd was reviewed and acclaimed in andalucia by some of the "old guard" who have encouraged its release.  with its roots in ancient east indian music, "flamenco" has influenced much of the world's music.  these spanish-inspired pieces reflect my passion for this musical rubric".

shawn david mcmillen - catfish

guitarist and composer shawn david mcmillen is a native of the east texas town of lake jackson, known as “the cancer capitol of america” due to its large concentration of chemical plants. quintanna, where the brazos river meets the gulf coast beach, formerly was home to the karankawa indians—whose legacy is commemorated in shawn’s song "quintanna’s head dress.

shawn’s stepfather, a member of the christian rock band waves of joy, introduced him to garage bands and deep-sea fishing. shawn lived in many different households until he left home at 16 for houston and a glamorous lifestyle of playing in punk rock bands while sleeping in parks, vans, and the homes of friends.

in the early nineties, shawn met tom and christina carter of charalambides—now considered early pioneers of the present avant-folk movement—as well as heather leigh murray. heather and shawn moved to galveston, where she attended texas a&m/galveston while “working at an animal clinic, recording music constantly, and having cataclysmic experiences on acid together at the beach.

shawn and heather recorded together as ash castles on the ghost coast, releasing one cd on charalambideswholly other imprint and playing one show with palace brothers. circa 1999, the pair moved to austin where they played with rick reed in abrasion ensemble and later formed iron kite.

recorded mostly at night, catfish is acoustic-based only because shawn had no electric guitar at the time. other instruments include autoharp, roland keyboard, indian goat bell, indonesian gongs, bowed electric bass, african kalimba (thumb piano), and shakuhachi (japanese bamboo flute). cited influences at the time include american indian lore, music from the middle east and india, phil yost, robbie basho, and malachi.

catfish was released in 2005 as limited vinyl issue on the emperor jones label. ( the cd contains 20 extra minutes of music) afterwards, mcmillen released a double lp with the friday group (with tom carter); currently, he plays in rubble along with king coffee of butthole surfers.

excellent comp of raga-guitar extrapolations from peter walker (whose rainy day raga lp i managed to find down in balmer a few years back & has been as close at hand as the two albums by vanguard label-mate sandy bull in the interim) - with additional, tacked-on material paying deference to walker’s poneering eastern-leaning style by greg davis, jack rose, thurston moore, james blackshaw, and shawn david mcmillen ...

not to knock the contemporary efforts entirely (greg’s piece is of course spot on) - but i could have really used a full disc of just “raga” and “second poem” !!!

a raga for peter walker

a raga for peter walker will feature four new tracks from peter along with original, previously unreleased compositions by the revered contemporary guitarists steffen basho-junghans, james blackshaw, greg davis, shawn david mcmillen, thurston moore, and jack rose. more a tip of the hat than a “tribute” album, these players all share an appreciation for a gifted musician whose small yet amazing body of work still resonates.

guitarist peter walker came up in the cambridge ma and greenwich village folk scenes of the sixties. he recorded two albums for the vanguard label in the late sixties in a style best described as american folk-raga. he studied with ravi shankar and ali akbar khan, and was dr. timothy leary's musical director, organizing music for the lsd advocate’s “celebrations.”  peter walker’s 1967 debut album, rainy day raga, features one of the first studio appearances by jazz flautist jeremy steig, as well as guitarist bruce langhorne, who recorded with bob dylan and many others. rainy day raga is a gentle and beautiful fusion of eastern and western musical traditions, and one of the earliest examples of a style explored by sandy bull several years earlier. a second album, second poem to karmela or, gypsies are important (1969) found walker going even deeper into indian instrumentation, playing sarod and sitar. during this time, peter played or was associated with such musicians as lowell george, fred neil, tim hardin, and joan baez, among many others.

walker settled in upstate new york in the early seventies. in more recent years, he has developed an intense interest in flamenco guitar and, through regular trips to spain, been accepted into the flamenco’s exclusive musical elite.

the black dove
christian kiefer & sharron kraus

the black dove is a collaborative project between two like-minded artists, christian kiefer and sharron kraus. kiefer is a sacramento-based singer/songwriter with several acclaimed concept records exploring the history of the american west, who has collaborated with members of low, wilco and the band. kraus is an english folksinger in the tradition of sandy denny, linda thompson and anne briggs, a dark folk troubadour who's debut album beautiful twisted made rolling stone's top critics' albums for 2002. her most recent album on australian label camera obscura, songs of love & loss, further strengthened her profile as one of today's most innovative contemporary folk artists.

in creating the black dove, the two worked on songs and instrumentals based on the idea of love letters between two people, one the pursuer and one the pursued, one flesh and blood, the other a ghost. kiefer's forest-bound northern california studio was awash with mandolins, guitars, pump organ, tongue drums, and banjos. blue jays squawked through the trees, the flies swarmed and buzzed, the wind whistled through the pine needles. the album is meant to be experienced as a sonic novel with each song or chapter referencing the text.

tompkins square press release...
charlie louvin

on february 20th, 2007, country music giant charlie louvin will release his first new studio album in over ten years on the tompkins square label.

the self-titled disc, produced by mark nevers (lambchop, calexico, candi staton) and charlie louvin, was recorded in spring/summer 2006 in nashville. it features guest performances by elvis costello, jeff tweedy, will oldham, tom t. hall, george jones, bobby bare sr., tift merritt, marty stuart, david kilgour, and members of bright eyes, lambchop, superchunk, blanche and clem snide, among others.

the album features several louvin brothers classics as well as country favorites first popularized by jimmie rodgers, the delmore brothers, the carter family, and the monroe brothers. charlie also has included a moving tribute to his late brother ira, with whom he formed the louvin brothers in 1940. (ira louvin died in a car accident in 1965, at age 41.)

charlie louvin's influence on country, alt-country, and their many sub-genres, is incalculable. the unique harmonies and lyrical folk poetry of the louvin brothers ("among the top duos in country music history") have inspired countless covers of their songs by such artists as johnny cash, gram parsons, the byrds, emmylou harris, uncle tupelo and the raconteurs (with jack white).

"must you throw dirt in my face," a new version of the louvin brothers' 1962 hit featuring charlie with george jones, is the first track to be released from charlie louvin. in support of his new album, charlie louvin and his band will tour the us extensively in 2007, including special summer appearances celebrating the artist's 80th birthday (july 7, 2007).
