january 2012 release ; ... lovely australian vinyl pressing (the first release, actually) of this october 1971 session, recorded in rome’s fono roma studios & featuring the full il gruppo lineup of egisto macchi, ennio morricone, franco evangelisti, mario bertoncini, walter branchi, and battisti d’amario, along with vincenzo restuccia on blazing psych-funk drums ...

... no, that’s not a mis-type ; picture the classic gruppo lineup of non-idiomatic experimental improv & extended-technique explorations, only played alongside continuous studio funkdrum-kit workouts ... if that doesn’t sound like the best possible combination of things, i don’t know what does ... highly recommended !!!

il gruppo di improvvisazione nuova consonanza:
niente lp
16 track lp

founded in rome in 1964, ‘il gruppo di improvvisazione nuova consonanza’ was a collective of noted and noteworthy composers who challenged the very structure and performance of music itself. today the most renowned of its members would be film scoring genius ennio morricone (indeed “il gruppo …” performed on many celebrated morricone scores of the 1960s and 1970s) but each contributor has an intriguing history in italian music.

the collective improvised live (according to strict exercises) and in the studio (recording for rca, deutsche grammaphon, gdm and others). come 1970, “il gruppo(as ‘the group’) recorded “the feed-back(for rca italy), an insane amalgam of avant-improvsation and motorik krautrock beats that, understandably, has become one of the most collectable lps ever issued. in october 1971il gruppo’ returned to the studio to record a sequel. this is that record.

for reasons unknown “niente” was never originally issued but one listen will convince that not only is it the sequel to one of the most sought after lps of all time, but it is also by far its superior. wildly accessible, brain-melting jams collide with smokingrooves in a hothouse of italo avant-improv. you have been warned.

egisto macchi:
i futurbili lp
11 track replica lp

egisto macchi (1928-1992) has long existed in the shadow of his friend and famous collaborator ennio morricone. as morricone melded pop idioms and western scores, macchi too melded classicism, the avant garde and early electronic music. aside from his frequent collaborations with morricone (in the astounding ‘il gruppo di improvvisazione nuova consonanza’) macchi was a busy film (lsd inferno, bandidos, the assassination of trotsky) and tv (e.s.p, many commercials with mario bava) composer in late 1960s and 1970s italy and france. macchi also cut a number of highly desirable library lps for the gemelli, sermi and other italian labels in the 1970s.

i futuribili’ is one of the greatest and most sought after of those lps, a stunning and powerful hybrid of haunting orchestral arrangements, jarring avant tones and dense electronic atmospheres (the later played by composer and ‘il gruppo di improvvisazione nuova consonanza’ bandmate walter branchi). presented as an exact replica of the incredibly rare 1972 gemelli lp, remastered from the original master tapes and complete with scholarly liner notes as an insert.

... amazing, short mood-pieces, largely performed by patrice sciortino on percussion instruments (although there’s a great deal of weird, animal-imitating instrumental grappling, some “spiders on my skin” styled pizzicato wavering, and the like ... listen to the sound-sample, into which i’ve put a clean 3/4 dozen random queues) ...

patrice sciortino:
chronoradial (plus extra tracks)

in the world of sound library and production music french avant-garde composer patrice sciortino is both unique and universal. his astounding late 1960s and early 1970s recordings for the prestigious musique pour l’image and psi labels receive their first serious reissue and reappraisal here.

cellos growl and twist with an air evocative of bernard hermann, choirs hiss and howl like alessandro alessandroni’s ‘i cantori moderni’ and the whole thing is as dexterous and playful as ennio morricone at his very best. but really sciortino is his own beast, percussive and jarring one moment, soothing yet unsettling the next.

reissued for the very first time is his landmark 1970 lp “chronoradial” plus a swathe of beautiful yet confronting (and incredibly rare) late 1960s french library cuts.

orchestra peter thomas:
orion 2000

the 'holy grail' of kraut-space-funk

the highpoint of a career that boasts the legendary ‘space patrol(raumpatrouille) and ‘chariots of the gods’ soundtracks, peter thomas’ ‘orion 2000’ is a near-mythical release that was only ever pressed in miniscule amounts as a german library lp (in 1975) and has never been available commercially before now.

drums pound, basses buzz, horns flail and star-maidens wail. berserk electronic and musique-concrete effects collide with manic energy. there is nothing on this world (or any other) that sounds like the ‘blaxploitation-kraut-jazz-in-space’ sound of the orchestra peter thomas.

remastered from the original master tapes and presented with exclusive liner notes, the original artwork, four extra ultra rare tracks and rare photos.

the star-people have, at last, landed.

november 2008 release ; ... first legit release of this insane 1978 album by bruce haack ...

aside from the profanity-laced “haackula” album itself (surely one of the more singular pieces of work in his canon), we’re treated both to a 1982 electro/hip-hop jam with russell simmons (!?!) and, perhaps more relevant, a half-hour electro-acoustic piece from 1979that’s halfway between warner jepson / terry riley repeat-pattern aphasia and the harsher end of the bedroom-synth spectrum ... amazing.

bruce haack :
haackula

bruce haack's "haackula" is the record you've dreamt of and the stuff of nightmares. deemed to be too dark and too offensive for release when it was recorded in 1978 it has languished unheard in the vault ever since. with its premiere release here it will soon be revered as a lost classic of outsider electronica.

haack's anger with a society he sees as too straight and too claustrophobic is palpable as he hisses and cusses his way over astoundingly elastic electro backings. already respected as one of the pioneers of twentieth century electronic music haackula strikes out on this disc into dark, yet playful territory where few have gone before. imagine a very, very bummed out kraftwerk scowling as they play childlike melodies and sing under their breath of fear and abandonment. one listen to haackula's "blow job" is sure to change the way you view electronic music forever.

as well as the full haackula album for the first time this release also features haack's extraordinary 1982 collaboration with russell simmons (def jam/public enemy/beastie boys) party machine and the incredible 32 minute (!) 1979 soundscape composition icarus. all tracks make their first official release here and are lovingly remastered from the original tapes.

often bootleged, (incomplete with an incorrect tracklist and much inferior sound quality may we add!) the dark jewel that is haackula now sees the light of day in this deluxe premiere edition.

bruce haack
the electric lucifer
(remastered with extra tracks)

bruce haack's "the electric lucifer" is rightly considered one of the masterworks of 20th century electronic music. originally recorded in 1968 and 1969 (and released in 1970) it is an album both unique in conception and superb in realization. an eminently listenable work where pop-psychedelia and moog/musique-concrete sounds coalesce around haack's central metaphysical concept of "powerlove", a force so powerful that it could end war and unify humankind.

acclaimed upon its original release (one of rolling stone's favourite albums of 1970 amongst many citations) yet unavailable for over three decades, "the electric lucifer" is presented here for the first time on cd ! remastered and restored from the original master tapes recently discovered in the columbia vault (and featuring two previously unreleased bonus tracks), with hitherto unpublished photos from the original recording sessions and exclusive liner notes and recollections. "the electric lucifer" is your gateway to the profound yet playful universe of bruce haack, a "far-out" place where flower-power and inner-space electronics collide!

hillbillies in space !!!

ever wondered what would have happened if hillbillies and hayseeds put down their fiddles and banjos and got their hands on some space-age technology?

wonder no more.

in 1971 academic and experimental music composer gil trythall was commissioned by athena records and studio boss rick powell to record a switched on bach for "country folk". trythall dutifully ran country and bluegrass standards, and the hits of the day, through the valves and circuits of a battery of moog synthesizers and related hardware. the resulting 1972 album, country moog (switched on nashville) is certainly unlike anything ever heard before (or since, for that matter). equal parts virtuosic musicianship, bizarre musique-concrete effects and just plain entertaining, the original album was popular enough to spawn a sequel, 1973's nashville gold (switched on moog).

cited by bob moog as one of his favourite "moog" recordings, both albums are included here for their first appearance on cd with a number of rare or previously unreleased tracks, exclusive liner notes, historical photos and recollections from gil trythall himself!
