datashock / shiversvol. iv” long playing record

  • untitled (1)

  • untitled (2)
february 2008 release ; pair of collaborative burners by a 6-headed lineup featuring members of datashock & brother/sister-act shivers ...

i’ve heard a bunch of things by these guys over the last few years (mostly c/o member pascal hector’s meudiademorte imprint) but nothing this fully realized ; starting with cycling electronics, bongos, & distant flute straight out of an early popol vuh / amon düül i set, we (collectively) progress through a huge wall of distant voices / tones & sparse guitar (listen to the sound-sample) ... really nice !!!
textile press release...
datashock - "vol iv"

there is no constant line-up, as the group is joined by new members every now and then.their music is defined almost entirely by psychedelic multidimensional live-improvisations stemming from 70ies kraut-rock influenced by contemporary electronic music and psychotic dronescapes. as a result we find complex layers of sultry muffled vibrations met by heavy waves of electronic sound experiments and strangely disfigured images. here and there reality-distorting bits of whispers and cut-up voices are woven into the texture of these alien patterns of sound. every step here is like nervously stumbling through the swampy ground of a jungle. here every look is like a secret glimpse at a hidden ghost-train world.

if, however, you would want to use other bands from past and present as a reference, names like tangerine dream or sunburned might come to mind. datashock’s music has a similarly warm and organic feel to it. labels like ‘spooky psychedelic-post-krautfolk’ are at the same time graphic description as well as missing the point altogether.

bobby mooaventures” long playing record

textile press release...
bobby moo : "bobby moo"

bobby moo is a trio created in 2000. alexandre bellenger, an active young composer, plays prepared turntables and records, miho is an electronic noise maker and arnaud rivière plays mixing board specially arranged with metal rods and wires.

bobby moo likes to deliver many different kind of improvised music, according to how they feel that moment. it goes from some quiet delicate waves to harsh brutal noise shower. their playing is strong and honnest, always trying to break through, unshamedly going for risky paths and unexpected outcomes.

bobby moo has an ability of mixing well with other genres of performances. the trio has given many concerts in various contexts in france and so far only once abroad, at the cave 12 in geneva. together or indivually they have played with andy bolus & erik minkkinen, mahayoni mudra, sachiko m, jean-françois pauvros, martin tétreault or goth trad. sometimes bobby moo becomes bobby two, with the two ‘boys’ only.

...

xavier charles

hes working with many different people and style of music (improvised music, noisy, electroacoustic, sound poetry) : martin tetreault, the ex, pierre berthet, etage 34, axel dörner, jacques di donato, jérôme jeanmart, john butcher, jean pallandre, marc pichelin, cris cutler, martine altenburger, frédéric le junter, camel zekri, emmanuelle pellegrini, michel doneda, frédéric blondys hes now working on a system including clarinet, prepared bass, and vibrating speakers with different collectivs : kristoff k.roll, ossatura, la flibusteshe also organizes «densités» a new music festival in verdun .

martin tetreault

the first martin tetreault vinyle release. martin tétreault, an internationally-renowned montreal dj and improviser, originally came from the milieu of the visual arts. his path has been marked out by various productions on compact disc and live performances with a range of collaborators: diane labrosse, rené lussier, jean derome, michel f. côté, i8u, otomo yoshihide, kevin drumm, xavier charles, ikue mori, and many more. he has abandoned the musical citation that he had been using in his work since he began in 1985 and now explores the intrinsic qualities of the turntable: the sound of the motor, of interference, and so on. he also uses needles, prepared surfaces (with thanks to john cage), and small electronic instruments. the bruitiste approach of remaining analogical has allowed him to leave behind the question but what about royalties? and to get himself invited to electronic-music events! when he feels the need for a break from music, he goes back to the visual arts, where he sands, scrapes, cuts up books and magazines, and so on.

pierre tanguay

a percussionist, composer and inveterate inventor, pierre tanguay’s music shows the wide range of his experience in ancient and contemporary music, jazz, and music for dance, theatre and cinema. born in quebec city in 1957, he has devoted himself to music full-time since 1978.

he plays with some twenty established groups, such as dangereux zhoms, évidence, castor et compagnie and karen young, and is the founder of strada, midi tapant and derome tanguay danse. he has produced five albums and collaborated closely on some fifty others, and has more than twenty compositions for dance (lucie grégoire, andrew harwood, irène stamou and francine gagné) and a number for theatre and film (allan booth, imago and roberto ariganello) to his credit. he regularly tours throughout canada and europe.

sun / hasslehound : "sun / hasslehound"

sun

sun is the unusual pairing of world renowned experimental guitarist oren ambarchi and australian music figurehead chris townsend.

sun confirms its authors as two truly original music minds, a languid and sweet pop creation, brimming with sly invention in its classicist frame. these songs simply float into the consciousness with a grand air and sublimely delicate touch. there's an easy warmth to sun as well as some darker surprises for added depth and nuance

discographie:
sun s/t preservation (australie) staubgold (all) + cd remixes (mapstation, pluramon, pimmon, hrvatski, rafael toral …)

hassle hound

formed approximately two and a half years ago the group consists of tony swain (guitar & samples), lizzy swimmers (vocals & violin), david fulford (electronics & keyboards) and mark vernon (electronics & samples). hassle hound blend samples and loops from a variety of disparate sources, gelling them together with instrumentation to create quirky off-kilter pop songs. their sound is lush and melodic and always highly evocative, combining influences from a range of unlikely sources, taking in both the contemporary and the obsolete, high and low fidelity, the popular and the obscure.

the personnel:
david fulford currently lives in huddersfield, flies kites and works in a kite shop. lizzy swimmers currently lives and works in warsaw. she composes music for theatre productions: ‘morderstwo’ premiered in may 2000 and will be re-staged later this year. she has collaborated with marcus schmickler on a project for release on the pietho praxis/ @music label. tony swain currently lives and works in glasgow as a musician and painter. he has an ongoing output of both solo and collaborative projects and is currently establishing his own ‘civic records’ label as an outlet for these and other sound art projects. mark vernon lives and works in glasgow. he is involved in a range of audio activities including audio documentaries, soundscapes, radio production and soundtracks, which he has created for a number of short artists’ films (that’s short films by artists, not films by short artists). as well as working on a number of other collaborative sound/music projects he also co-runs ‘radio tuesday’ an art/pirate radio station that broadcasts in glasgow intermittently.

the group have played live extensively in scotland and france, alongside the likes of mum & dad, melt banana, vibracathedral orchestra and volcano the bear

oren ambarchi / scott horscroft / hado hosplit” long playing record

actually this is the most recent issue in this series of splits-ville singles is this one (don’t pay the numerical scheme any mind) - released during the summer of 2006, and featuring a wall of sequenced guitar played by oren ambarchi and assembled by scott horscroft. anyone familiar with scott’s “9 guitars” disc on staubgold will know the score... think that, plus... 10...

hado ho is a name i’m not familiar with, and i’m spculating based on the info on the sleeve that hh’s takehito nakazato passed away a few years back... which is both a shame and a real shame as his side is a blend of lescalleet-ish tapeloops and mongrel electronics that i’d love to hear more of...

astral social clubmodel town in a field of mud” long playing record

  • mud compress #1
  • hydroponix

  • mud compress #2
  • all that glitters is not chocolate
2008 release ; first release (that i’m aware of at least) by the full-on duo asc lineup of neil campbell and johntirath singh nirmalaclyde-evans ...

john’s sound-world meshes nicely with neil’s off-kilter techno weirdness ; for every “banger” there’s a much more subtle stretch of bi-directionally looped field-ambience and errant electronic squiggle (listen to the sound-sample) ...

keep ‘em coming guys ; long may you reign ...
textile press release...
astral social club - "model town in a field of mud" model town in a field of mud is the result of a collaboration between neil campbell and john clyde-evans. this album was recorded largely thru the post during john’s year long stay in india. (although the very last few minutes are the duo live in sheffield right after he returned). this album is a 50/50 collaboration, hopefully the first of many!

john clyde-evans has a lenghty career, even if he did "disappear" for a few years. john was in the band hood (domino recordings) then cut a couple of great solo records, then disappeared, reappearing using his sikh name of tirath singh nirmala, cutting an lp with richard youngs, then reverting his original name and dropping the magnificent "apetal thunderfall" cd on us earlier this year!!

neil campbell is a cornerstone of the uk underground and played in vibracathedral orchestra, sunroof, a band, with richard youngs, damo suzuki and many many other artists. despite some esoteric path, model town in a field of mudd reconfirms john and neil’s intentions to blast techno into the stratosphere.

2007 release ; believe this is still the most recent album from this pdx group led by tom greenwood, produced by white rainbow’s adam forkner & featuring guest-vocals from evainca oresalens ...

i’ve never been too much of a fan of these guys, but this has some really great moments, from the straight-up space-rock of the opening “sing(listen to the sound-sample) to the free-form electro-acoustic collage of “we are / channel zero” ...
textile press release...
jomf - "valley of fire"

valley of fire contains 3 brand new finely crafted songs on side one, and on side two, a 20 minute classic psychedelic, dirt road journey the record represents two equally facinating aspects of jomf sonwriting, and musical arrangement. over the years, jackie-o motherfucker have spent equal time writing and arranging classic american folk and blues, and long, free-form compositions, drawing comparisons to 1960’s and 70s ensembles like ash ra tempel, amon düül, amm, faust, can, and the art ensemble of chicago, while at the same time, developing a song crafting style that has drawn on a musical language passed down through generations.

from classic arrangements of traditional spirituals, and work songs from the american south, “go down old hanah”, “amazing grace(fig. 5) to modern arrangements of greenwich village folk from the 1960’s, “somethings on your mind” - dino valente / karen dalton (liberation), to completely original jomf classics “everyday”, and “hey! mr. sky(change, flags....) jackie-o motherfucker have trawled the dusty corners of history, and absorbed the languages of past generations, twisting the elements to form a new style which has been appropriated by musicians all over the world.

valley of fire begins with “sing” an original composition with vocals by eva salens (inca ore) recorded in charlottesville virginia, written in collaboration with a local street preacher, the song addresses the importance of the individual voice, rising above a rotten political structure ...lift up your voice and sing....!

track two, titled “valley of fire”, another jomf original composition, was recorded in leeds, england over the winter of 2006, with further production in portland by adam forkner.

track three, is a jomf arrangement of a beach boys song called “the tree” from their lonesome and wasted record, “surf’s up”. also recorded in leeds england, in the living room of lauren naylor, with further production in portland by adam forkner. it is an incredibly dark and minimal arrangement of the song, with an awesome vocal contribution from forkner.

side two is a side long composition titled “we are” with vocals by eva salens and tom greenwood, and in typical jomf style, takes the listener on a lysergic ride through the misty atmosphere...

valley of fire picks up on the trail of flags of the sacred harp, and wanders down a similar path, adding elements of krautrock, and classic west-coast american production to create an incredible, original album.

the cover of valley of fire is an original watercolor painting by american artist jo jackson, who creates mystical paintings, and shows her work around the world.

... based on byron’s (multiple!) descriptions of this one (not to mention the presence of this heat producer & flying lizard david cunningham, who’s otherwise been quiet on the production front these days) i was expecting a more angular take on “privatefolk/psych craft, and, for a brief moment i was met with some neat, a-rhythmic overdubs ... before realizing i was listening to the same track at the same time twice (both locally in the foreground and via ms. robertson’s myspace page in the background) ...

cunningham does add some nice flourishes (listen to the sound-sample) but this is largely of the sort of confessional singer/songwriter avenues that i don’t tread down much these days ... that said, ms. robertson has a lovely, breathy tone that’s very easy on the ears ...
textile press release...
joanne roberston - "the lighter"

listening to joanne roberston’s debut album is something i’ve been doing in bits and pieces for quite a while. songs have come, songs have gone, and while i miss some of the tunes that have disappeared into the aether, the remaining selections are uniformly stellar.

it’s hard to describe exactly how joanne’s songs function. in certain ways they bear a similarity to folk music. empiricially, they fulfill most of that genre’s requirements, but they actually hew to none of its conventions. the lyrics, the structures, the rhythms all breathe with a unique quality that feels born of a free improvisational impulse rarely associated with folk music. the surface of this music is so casual it almost defies you to get close enough to really see it, really try to comprehend it. but the closer you listen, the weirder and deeper everything becomes.

to not do so is to miss 90% of what’s going on. this album is like the soundtrack to a movie about semiotic icebergs – massive floes of content and ideas, obscured by the sparkle of water. joanne is such a theoretician, it’s probably hard for her to trust her instincts at times. but she has obviously trusted herself to fly blind on some tracks here. their forms are so open as to be almost non-existent. others have been revised with almost an alchemist’s attention to detail – every cracked globe of vital element in the exact right place.

transparent and opaque at the same moment, the lighter represents a brilliant set of songs, made even more luminous by david cunningham’s production touch. you are in for a big motherfuckin’ treat. dig it.

--byron coley 2007
...

joanne robertson grew up amidst the carnal circus atmosphere of blackpool, england. after studying piano in her youth, she chose instead to borrow her father’s guitar and wander through the sand dunes, plucking noisily at the strings and singing extemporaneous songs to scare-off the local hippies. she hung out in the region’s punk and metal bars, but fled to paris when drugs started collecting her friends in a little bucket. after that came the glasgow school of art and a noisy rock band called i love lucy, whose lyrics were all improvised. with the help of her schoolmates from franz ferdinand, they played in glasgow, london and new york, before breaking up after their sixth gig. starting to think that even i love lucy was too structured, joanne traveled to the coasts of america, where she communed with noise bands, did some shows and contemplated her future.

she opted to take her mfa at ucl slade school of fine art, where she formed the blood ‘n feathers collective with lucy stein. their visual art was widely feted and was included in the prestigious becks futures 2006 show, which showcases notable young british artists. simultaneously, joanne returned to solo performance, opening shows for martin creed around london. her debut album. the lighter, produced by david cunningham, is a direct outgrowth of this solo work. the lighter has a stark, weird musical beauty that is analogous to joanne’s visual work. flatness hide depth. simplicity masks complexity. the sweet conceals the sour. opposites attract and overwhelm each other. it’s one of nature’s laws. or maybe two.

joanne also works with the trio, mememe, alternately playing electric guitar and drums, making a racket that can be heard all the way up at the top of brick lane, when blasted from the basement of nog gallery. but this isn’t about that. the lighter is a collection of intimate interior portraits, reminiscent in spots of sybille baier, barbara manning, even hope sandoval, but all performed with an addictive off-kilter grace that suspends time in a very special way.

cunningham’s production has a luminous simplicity which allows joanne’s voice and guitar to breath as one, emitting whiffs that seem new and old at the same time. a devotee of serious art theory, joanne would (i’m certain) like to place all of this in a theoretical context, but it’s such a goddamn wonderful listen, i suggest we all just pull up some chairs and some fires and some drinks, and lift a toast (or a series of ‘em) to the lighter’s magnetic magic. a dark room, and empty bed and you. that’s all it takes.

textile press release...
the george burt / raymond mc donald quartet - "one bloke"

the collaboration of george burt and raymond mc donald with lol coxhill has produced 5 cds, each one having a different approach. for this cd the duo wanted to add bill wells and daniel padden to the mix not least because they are their friends with whom they have collaborated many times, but also because they felt their approach, at times improvisatory, but with a strong melodic focus, would be very compatible with their own way of working with lol. of course lol has a huge and richly deserved reputation as a unique free improviser with an innate, organic and never-ending sense of melodic inventiveness.

the duo enjoyed working with textile on their highly acclaimed cd hotel dilettante (which included lol coxhill, future pilot aka, the writter douglas coupland and the contemporary artist martin boyce) so they had their eye on this recording being released on textile too. as bill and daniel are already textile stalwarts, the duo felt this was another good reason for inviting us along to take part.

the legendary soprano saxophone player steve lacy died the week before the recording session. as lol was a friend and collaborator of steve, g burt and r. mc donald wanted to mark the occasion. the title-track of this cd, written specially for this session, recalls a trio cd called 3 blokes, which steve and lol recorded together with evan parker in germany .

sister iodine - "helle"

french pioneer experimental rock band (trio) founded in the early 90 s, sister iodine made themselves known with 2 albums recorded on the r.i.p french label semantic ; adn 115 (1994) & pause (1997), collision between the savage energy of no wave, the game of collage tapes and exploration of their instruments inspired by concrete music, their primitive love of noise, and the scientistic rock approach of innovative bands like this heat.

from 1992 to 97 they did some outstanding wild and bloody concerts in company of bands like sonic youth, faust, melt banana, us maple, stereolab, flaming demonics, the ex, keiji haino, circle x, bästard, krackhouse, tone rec, pluramon amongst others ...

geographically separated since 1997 sister iodine began to play sporadically for some scattered events like some dates w/ sonic youth french tour 1999, phonotaktik festival, vienna/1998, ps1 contemporary art center ny/1998, each members focused then more on their own new electronic projets (discom, duos w/ tujiko noriko, evil moisture) touring around the world. and still running...

back to pure and harsh electricity since 2004 , sister iodine continue their ufo like road, giving incandescant concerts here and there, premisses of the album to come out on textile records recorded @ rare book room studio with nicolas vernhes (black dice, cat power, david grubbs, animal collective).

park attack : "half past human"

after the stunning last drop at hideout ep from last year (released on the optimo dj’s oscarr label), park attack went to france to record their first full-length. a wild mix of stomp rock, slop punk and no wave intensity.

half-past human recalls the tribal arrhythmic sounds of dna, the blaring energy of teenage jesus and the jerks, and noise guitar hell of early sonic youth. the synth heavy sound does little to smooth the roughly sewn corners of their sound, which sets electronics against grumbling guitar and wailing vocals. the addition of a fourth member, jamie grier, on electronics (synth, bass, whatever else may be available at the moment) has solidified the band’s sound to a severe stomping force of nature.

live, the band lets the full growl of their sound be heard, and with uk dates planned for later this year, the noise will finally be heard stateside.

not exactly a recipe for chart-busting success, then, but what the hell? this is ferocious. (nme)

the george burt / raymond macdonald quintet with lol coxhill and future pilot aka : "hotel dilettante"

started in the folk idiom playing in the pentangle / martyn style with andy shanks and jim russell, the burt/macdonald quintet was formed after working with lindsay cooper in improvisation workshops.

the scottish group reunites with the uk improv guru lol coxhill for another round of rollicking improvisation.

what we have here is a band which concentrates on ideas rather than the more usual jazz proving ground, "chops", a group where the musicians cherish the music rather than the spotlight.

hotel dilettante is an orignal and infectious blend of breezy melodies and cutting edge improvisations inside original compositions and jazz standards featuring nicola macdonald's wonderful vocals and sushil k dade (future pilot aka)

this is another great document of this consistent, energetic and hugely enjoyable group, another chapter of the quintets adventures not to be missed!!

george burt (guitar)

allan pendreigh (drums)
christoph reiserer (soprano saxophone)

with
lol coxhill (soprano saxophone)
nicola macdonald (voice, melodica)

ticklish : "here are your new instructions"

ticklish are an electronic performance ensemble who use sampled sound and video to present a combined visual and sonic event that moves between polyrythmic pulses and abstract textures.

for the past five years ticklish have been operating as a spectral presence on the british electronic music scene. refusing to comply with easily identifiable (and easily dismissable) "movements" ticklish have continued to develop their sound, and attract increasing attention.

formed in 1995 using a somewhat more conventional line up they shifted to an all sampler line up in 1998 and added video artist rob flint to the band because his approach to video mixing and video sampling had similarities to the ethos and working methods of the rest of the band.

musically the group continually attempts to evade the many clichés of electronic music (be it endless shimmering reverb or clod-hopping beats) whilst maintaining a love and knowledge of the genre from the schaeffer experiments of the 1940's to the lap-top number crunchers of this century.

in common with many sampler groups ticklish listen widely, but unusually (maybe uniquely) this listening is to not simply to load their samplers, but because they like music (folk music has been a recent fascination, for example). all the samples ticklish use are actually generated from within the group itself. ticklish are not "plunderphonic";- there are no easy laffs from half recognised tv themes. conversely ticklish are not po-faced dredgers of misery- the name "ticklish" itself should imply that....no, if anything ticklish's music is about playing, not just in the musical sense, but also in the digging-in-the-sand-pit sense, and, as has been noted before- play is a subversive activity, with a very serious intent.

volcano the bear : "the idea of wood"

textile records is proud to release the new challenging musical adventures from the british improvisational quartet volcano the bear.

formed with the constant idea of being a group with uncompromising and boundless ideas, the quartet (laurence coleman, nick mott, aaron moore and daniel padden) is utterly beyond classification. this radical and unique music brought vtb to the attention of the more discerning.( steven stapleton asked the band to join the united dairies family.)

drawing on the work of robert wyatt, faust or this heat, the music of volcano the bear is the perfect combination of music and non music, melodies and free expression. the band creates a musical environment crossing composition with improvisation.

filled with crackling electronics, rumbling percussion, unconventionally played guitars, manipulated vocal noises, distorted piano "the idea of wood" is an ideal mix of primitive folk, art rock and filmic sound sculpting.

eccentric, hypnotic, mystic, but most of all truly incredible.
