| fridge are one of a handful of groups that succesfully (imho) bridge the gap between indie/post-rocktronic instrumentation and slightly more heady compositional idea(l)s... perhaps you slept on this when it was originally released a few years back. now would be a great time to right that wrong...
to clarify, here’s a capsulet i wrote during my brief tenure over @ amazon.com:
“this is the fourth album proper (discounting 1998's sevens and twelves) for the pioneering london-by-way-of-putney post-rocktronic trio. doing away for the most part with the sampled second-line beats and found textures prevalent on eph, the etudes on happiness work the band's collection of quasi-exotic instrumentation (kalimba, xylophone, and glockenspiel to name but three) through subtle digital reconstitution schemes, resulting in a far more intimate and inviting sound field.
cheeky song titles delineate the combinations: the blissed-out "cut up piano and xylophone" wisely works a reverse-skidding effect, unfortunately ending far before the listener can achieve the intended alpha-state; "harmonics" strums open chords underneath an involved polyrhythmic pulse built out of sampled acoustic guitar picking; "tone guitar and drum noise," with its endlessly skidding percussion manages to hip-check milford graves and augustus pablo simultaneously (not an easy feat). the occasional detour (such as "drums bass sonics and edit") does little to destroy the reigning pastoral mood.
results overall are nothing short of gorgeous, the lengths gone to pierce a new angle through the rock-trio aegis ultimately pay off in a unique offering, contemporary and ages old.” --keith fullerton whitman |

| artist: fridge title: happiness catalog # trr43 format: 2xlp (limited edition) release date: june 19, 2007
the players: kieran hebden adem ilhan sam jeffers
before four tet was remixing radiohead and coldplay and before adem was performing with david byrne and fairport convention, they were breaking new ground as fridge, a trio formed in 1996 with fellow schoolmate sam jeffers. after three critcally-acclaimed albums, the group took an inadvertent hiatus when its members’ various solo projects took off. six years later, the group are back with the sun, their most celebrated album yet. to celebrate their triumphant return, we are releasing their astonishing 2001 album, happiness, on deluxe limited edition double vinyl. strictly limited to 2,000 copies, and pressed on 100% virgin black vinyl, this is the first time happiness has been available on vinyl anywhere in the world in over five years.
fresh out of their not-so-advantageous deal with go!beat/polygram, fridge took their major label advance and wisely invested in a cozy but killer home studio with which they hibernated for the better part of a year. by the time spring had sprung they had popped out the nine gems that make up happiness. among them you will find some subtle organic drones, a few electronic vignettes, a couple epic rock pieces and one song – "five four child voice" – featuring an infant kieran hebden holding a conversation with his sister. |
