catalog number: taiga 25
artist: eleh
title: homage
format: 3xlp box
total running time: 2:04:48
release date: 2 april 2013

presenting a unified whole, the homage 3lp boxed set contains homage to the square wave, ...sine wave and ...pointed waveforms, all out of print until now. initially released separately in 2008, 2009 and 2012 respectively with custom letterpress jackets, this collection includes new retrospective artwork by john brien. each disc comes in its own one-color silkscreen jacket using the same blue, orange and green from the original editions; all housed in a rigid white satin-coated slipcase with spot varnish printing hand-numbered out of 800.

eleh, an artist who flourishes in restraint, uses a reduced sonic vocabulary to highlight delicate intricacies in a logical path toward harmonious satisfaction. the organization of hypnotic square waves, rippling sine waves and triangle/saw tooth waveforms is a discourse in the infinity, rather than the limits, of reduction. by employing a natural practice of balanced interpretation eleh enables an individual reaction free of the clutter of white noise.

release date: 5 february 2013

find yourself. impatience. death blues. acceptance. impermanence. iron string. the six songs that comprise jon mueller's death blues are each their own doorway to both a bold new musical statement from the renowned drummer / percussionist and an unprecedented journey into a conscious contemplation of death -- and the life that surrounds it. released in tandem with a multi-part manifesto, death blues transcends its own existence as 34-minute, earth-cracking rock album. much like mueller, whose landmark solo work stands alongside his role in notable bands volcano choir (and previously, collections of colonies of bees), death blues embodies the acknowledgement that there's more to experiencing music than simply just listening.

conceived and largely executed in its recorded form by mueller himself -- adding hammered acoustic guitar and bold vocal patterning to his ever-evolving mastery of percussion -- death blues is audibly (and intensely) personal. however, the very act of recording was the first step in a discourse that mueller began over a year ago, forming a band of brilliant performers from his milwaukee, wi hometown that would go on to perform death blues at hopscotch music festival in raleigh, nc and at two sold-out death blues events in milwaukee, where a labyrinth led the audience into a multi-sensory and participatory experience culminating in a climactic performance of the album. it was as close as one could get to being next to mueller at that moment of discovery: of the inevitability of death as the impetus to become more present in each moment and of the necessity of building his own path to sharing that idea.

death blues is being collaboratively released by taiga and hometapes and is available as a limited edition lp packaged in a deluxe litho-wrapped jacket that includes the death blues manifesto; 500 hand-numbered copies of the highest fidelity pressed on 200g virgin vinyl.

30 may 2012 marked the 80th birthday of american visionary musician pauline oliveros. “needle drop jungle” is a continuation of the celebration. together with bandmates stuart dempster and david gamper, oliveros and company churned up a vigorous storm at their january 2011 residency in seattle, captured on this double vinyl release. with the help of staff at dxarts, the deep listening band recorded impromptu downpours unhindered by technical issues, a peak in their collective creative output. suddenly & unexpectedly, david gamper died on 27 september 2011. “needle drop jungle” thus includes the brightest moments from what have sadly become the last recordings of this exceptional trio.

july 2012 release ; ... having just caught these guys at one of the scant few (criminally few) dates they played in advance support of this record, i have a bit of insight to their working methods than the context-free (if lovely) artwork provides ...

... jim plotkin, guitar in hand, seated behind a laptop running a software package of mysterious origin, proceeded to coax a series of attack-free tones out of his axe, feeding them through a long, multi-tap delay line, eventually yielding a seamless array of micro-textures, over which jon, seated behind a traditional drum-kit, first provided a textural wash of gong & cymbal textures ... eventually punctuating the stasis with a series of quickening perturbed accents ...

... this exact dynamic can be heard as track #2 here (hear-able via the sound-sample to your left) ; on record it works just as beautifully, merging two quite disparate aesthetics / approaches into some fairly chasmic common ground ...
taiga press release...

jon mueller and james plotkin first combined forces on physical changes, scorching the leading lp side of mueller's 2009 multi-format collaborative investigation. forging mueller's blistering percussion and rolling hills of drums with plotkin's searing guitar and melting electronics, a sturdy alloy was formed. when both musicians were asked to perform at the utech records music festival in june 2011, at which they appeared as a duo, the pair spent the proceeding days spontaneously unfurling terminal velocity.

recorded in rural wisconsin just outside of mueller's native milwaukee, terminal velocity is an effort of concentration. on the brink of implosion, the duo reduces dense washes of percussion and guitar to thick crusts, at times deceivingly with a whispered intensity. sizzling drums meet electronic warbles as two great forces restrain each other to a constant speed.

mastered by plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin vinyl, terminal velocity is presented in an edition of 500 copies. packaged in a heavy stoughton tip-on gatefold, the jacket is hand-numbered on the spine and features a textured paper to enhance karlynn holland's graphite drawings the album accompanies.

title: wired open day 2009
format: 2xlp
total running time: 75:06

release date: 5 june 2012

wired open day 2009 is a vinyl-only release documenting live performances by alan lamb, garry bradbury, david burraston, oren ambarchi and robin fox. held outdoors during the evening of october 31 at the wired lab, in rural south west, new south wales, australia, this 2xlp is a document of the event; the result of an artist in residence program to explore the sonic possibilities of the wires, landscape scale installations in rural nsw.

the wired lab is an artist run initiative founded in 2007 to foster art / science collaborations in a rural environment. the initial focus of this project was to establish a site to preserve and expand on the wires a distinctly australian invention that was pioneered by australian artist alan lamb since the 1970’s.

lamb’s formal investigations of the wires started in 1976 with his discovery of a 1km stretch of abandoned telegraph wires on a farm in the great southern region of western australia ... lamb learnt to record them and later devised compositions with these recordings. when these telegraph lines eventually decayed, lamb commenced building wire installations primarily for recording. like the scale of the original telegraph wires, these purpose built wire installations were not of a domestic scale, they too had a deep connection with nature and spanned 100’s of metres across the rural landscape. although principally functioning like a giant æolian harp, it is not only wind that ‘plays’ the wires, it seems that on their own accord the wires often harmonically ‘sing’, vibrate or roar as they react to environmental factors, thereby creating a unique and infinite instrumentation of itself and its surrounds, in the words of david burraston... they are nature's microphone

the 4 sides of wired open day 2009 display the expansive range of the wire installations built by the wired lab. commencing at sunset, garry bradbury and alan lamb coax a gentle eco with acoustic recordings into deep and sonorous reverberations on side a. david burraston and alan lamb focus on droplets of zaps and wire oscillations at twilight, with side b culminating in a downpour of crackling spray. at nightfall, oren ambarchi applies his mastery of condensed and layered tones on side c, with shuddering overtones, husky drones and rich clusters of sustain. robin fox concludes, in the dark, on side d, mashing off-kilter rhythms with a tumble of staccato bursts and fuzzy crunch.

an edition of 500 double lps in hand-numbered matte-varnished stoughton tip-on gatefold jackets, wired open day 2009 was mastered by james plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200g virgin vinyl. this release features photographs from the site and text by sarah last, founder of the wired lab and curator of wired open day 2009.

packaged in custom letterpress materials.

douglas quin’s fathom brings together four extended underwater soundscapes—two each from the arctic and antarctic. the recordings have been gathered over a period of 15 years, capturing an extraordinary palette of sonic voices, events, spaces, and textures. to the human ear, these soundscapes are haunting and otherworldly; yet they are very much of this worldout of earreach. the tracks are minimally edited and are his first field recordings to be archived in vinyl.

included with the release is a sealed envelope containing an insert with specific locations, animals, and other elements heard, giving listeners the option to absorb sound with or without association. the envelope is printed with liner notes and comments from dutch journalist and music critic rené van peer. mastered by james plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin-vinyl, fathom comes packaged in custom letterpressed materials and is presented as a limited edition of 1000.

september 2008 relase ; the third title in rafael toral’s contemporary “space program” ...

working here with a full ensemble (margarida garcia, rute praça, david toop, césar burago, and sei miguel), toral’s vocabulary of live-electroniclicks” comes across as much more fully-formed than in previous installments ; his modular-synth eruptions range from swarms of alien squawks to resonance-heavy low-end filter-blobs (listen to the sound-sample) ...

possibly my favorite of the series thusfar !!!
taiga press release...
rafael toral "space elements vol. i" lp (taiga 3)

this is the third in rafael toral's space program series of releases -- his long-term research project launched in 2004, through which he has unearthed an innovative approach and a complete re-thinking of how electronic music is conceived and experienced. using custom experimental instruments, toral performs electronic music concerned with "phrasing and swing" and performing strange melodies with physicality, movement and gesture in flux. the result is something you're unlikely to have heard before, a kind of alien electronic jazz.

after the acclaimed, orchestral space and the follow-up space solo 1, this is the first volume of the space elements series, each release being focused on one kind of instrument, on small settings and including collaborations. space elements vol. i features rute praça (cello), margarida garcia (electric double-bass), sei miguel's amazing percussionist césar burago, and david toop (flute), besides a short appearance by sei miguel himself.

from toral's liner notes:

"having found that jazz is the field of musical knowledge where disciplined decision-making is most developed, this music is more informed by jazz than by any other. the space program emphasizes articulating silence and sound, by structuring musical discourse on experimental instruments with a simple and clear sonic identity. to my surprise, i found no historical precedents to this practice, being that it draws practically no information from electronic music history (which is grounded on different thinking patterns), and it draws very little from jazz history as well, since the instruments i use are inadequate to play any music based on the western system. i regard this approach to jazz (meaning a system of individual decision-making from the standpoint of free-spectrum live electronics) as a new and exciting field of creative possibilities. i called it 'post-free jazz electronic music.'"

space elements vol. i was mastered direct to metal and pressed on clear 200 gram virgin vinyl in a limited edition of 500 copies. the jacket was designed by helder luís at no type and features a collage by contemporary artist joão paulo feliciano. cd version forthcoming on staubgold.

april 2008 release ; domestic vinyl edition of the 2007 quecksilber cd - the first in rafael toral’s “space program” series in which he’s trying out some new modes for pure electronic improvisation ...

i saw him perform this material live (actually - he headlined the night in which my “recorded in lisbon” was captured doing this set ...) & i must say the meager setup (either two battery-powered tiny guitar amplifiers & contact mics or a small 4-module doepfer analogue synth) produced a pretty raucous range of pointillist squawks & chatter ... very dis-similar to his flowing guitar-based pieces but nonetheless and individualized take on applying jazz-improv methodologies to electronic music ...

lovely high-spec red-vinyl edition c/o the minneapolis-based taiga label ... highly recommended !!!
taiga press release...
rafael toral "space solo 1" lp (taiga 1)

the lp version of the cd released by quecksilber in 2007. presented in a limited edition of 500, mastered direct to metal and pressed on 200g virgin vinyl. the jacket features the rui toscano drawing from the cd version expanded for the 12-inch format printed in black and pantone red on reversed stock with the pocket flooded red.

in 2004, rafael toral announced that he was to embark on a long term project, which was to be a multi-facetted work in progress representing his new approach to music. with the release of the first album of the program, the eponymous "space" (staubgold 69 cd), he managed to disrupt the notions of "avantgarde music" even of those who consider themselves well-versed in this field.

in the past, toral's work had been based on the guitar and the myriad possibilities of generating sounds from it. more often than not, his music exhibited a tendency towards the concept of the drone. so many people familiar with his oeuvre were surprised to learn that none of those elements figured in "space" (though he might re-introduce theguitar at a later stage of the "space program" – but that is what is called "artistic license"...).

in the program, toral focuses on "single sound events". the sounds are generated by self-devised electronic equipment set into action by the performance of gestures, by bodily action (take a look at the video samples of the "space study 1" on his website, where he "plays" glove-controlled computer sinewaves). thus, the music is created by individual decisions in real time – just like in jazz, as toral emphasizes. so basically, this is electronic music played with a jazz sensibility. toral brings a performative aspect to electronic music that it often sorely lacked.

the initial album "space" is like a roadmap. it is a point of departure for recordings in the "space program". it is accompanied by three "diversified" series: the performance series "space studies" (which started in 2004), and the record series "space elements" and "solo series". the latter are unaccompanied real-time solo recordings on one instrument only (as opposed to "space elements", where toral collaborates with other musicians). the present cd is the first in that series and the second materialisation of the program.

whereas "space" featured an orchestral approach to composition (and thus a diversity of elements), "space solo 1" presents the listener with music which is narrowed down almost to a point. everything is concentrated on a single element. the key feature of this music is that it was performed with a degree of skill, a commitment and a depth of exploration that could not be found on an orchestral record like "space". on this album, toral appears as a musician who simply plays an instrument on an individual, human and physical level.

one cannot help but notice that toral is opening up a new dimension in music – and maybe also in language. when the renowned british music magazine the wire recently ran a large feature on toral's new project, the last sentence read thus: "it seems that mere words are far from able to convey everything a human being may wish to express." toral's new project is just that: a new mode of expression.

after over 15 years of drone and ambient work based around guitar and electronics, rafael toral has set off on a radically new mission. leaving the guitar behind, toral has equipped himself with instruments such as a theremin-controlled white noise generator, amplified coil spring percussion, and a random pulse width modulation oscillator. with these he has launched his jazz-fueled craft through earth's atmosphere, into outer space. the resulting voyage is one where the sounds created recall the blast of a ray gun, the gurgle of a velociraptor, the rush of a primordial geyser, all seasoned with a vintage analog appeal and interspersed with meditative moments of silence.

toral's new approach to music, entitled the space program, runs counter to his career thus far by focusing on performance instead of composition. the foundation and fundamental release of the program is space. using live and in-studio performances from 2004 and 2005, toral designed space as "an orchestral environment for electronic instruments." following space, the program will continue to develop with releases from the space solo series, documenting performances of individual instruments played unaccompanied, and the space elements series featuring various collaborators while toral focuses on a single piece of equipment.

with previous releases by toral on such respected labels as touch, table of the elements and ecstatic peace, taiga records is proud to present the deluxe 2xlp version of space. this exciting album by toral is coincidentally taiga's inaugural release as well as that of the space program. originally released on cd by the highly regarded staubgold label, it is presented here in a limited edition of 500 copies on direct-metal mastered 200g virgin vinyl. this version includes all of the original audio from the cd plus a previously unreleased 17-minute vinyl-only bonus track, "space study 1.3," a live duet with percussionist cesar burago. packaged in a gatefold jacket designed by helder luís with spot metallic printing, the album boasts the daniel malhão photograph from the cd version expanded across the entire outside in uv gloss, an essay by toral printed inside on reversed stock and the pockets flooded black.
