down below it's chaos

kinski is a four-piece rock band from seattle, wa. their unique evocation of avant-rock is deconstructionist and heady, but also emotive and visceral. nme described kinski as: “like sabbath in a washing machine during a power surge.” comprised of guitarists chris martin and matthew reid-schwartz (matthew also plays keyboards and flute), bassist lucy atkinson, and drummer barrett wilke, kinski have toured with mission of burma, comets on fire, oneida, mono, acid mothers temple, black mountain, and most recently opened a month of dates for tool on their spring ’07 tour.

produced and recorded by randall dunn (earth, sunn o))), boris) at his aleph studio in seattle, down below it’s chaos is kinski’s 3rd full-length for sub pop. with the notable inclusion of 3 songs with subdued yet urgent vocals courtesy of chris martin, the new record is a kaleidoscopic mix of kinski’s expansive, over-driven power and intricate beauty. with majestically fuzzed-out guitar tones, spare and pounding rhythms, and swirling sonic textures, down below it’s chaos sums up kinski’s past and propels them into the ozone. what’s left of it, that is.

jennifer gentle
the midnight room

two years after the release of jennifer gentle’s critically acclaimed sub pop debut valende, the italian psychedelic avant-pop explorers are back with the midnight room. and, while the band is five members strong when they play live, with the recent departure of drummer alessio gastaldello, the recorded jennifer gentle is now solely the project of founder and songwriter marco fasolo. marco wrote, performed and produced the entire new album alone in his ectoplasmic studio, a rambling old house lost in the foggy plains of northern italy, infamous for its previous owner’s suicide by rifle.

and, perhaps fittingly, the new record pulses with a nocturnal, feverish, hallucinatory emotional atmosphere, making for a truly unique aural experience. informed by a deep love for american ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll and european musicians like nino rota and kurt weill, the midnight room is by far the most personal jennifer gentle album to date.

focusing on the possibilities of the quintessential rock combo (two guitars, bass and drums) and enriched by swirling keyboard touches, marco created an album that feels like music from some forgotten amusement park at midnight. evoking bizarre, otherworldly images of gas-lit street corners, abandoned theatres, labyrinthine corridors.

the midnight room marries the intensity of primitive rock ‘n’ roll with a renewed taste for a certain kind of typically italian melody—albeit deconstructed, shattered and broken into tiny little bits. think of link wray, krysztof komeda and federico fellini rolled into one short, dense, cryptic tour de force. and then think again.

pissed jeans
hope for men

following on the heels of their monumental don’t need smoke to make myself disappear 7”, pissed jeans drop album number 2 and their sub pop debut: hope for men (we like to think of it in the “mankind” sense). for those who found a glimmer of the stuff on the aforementioned single (two pressings of which have sold out), the album delivers more, and in abundance. that is to say, if classic, thick-as-glue punk bombast and aussie sludge stoke the coals of your existence, you have found, not only your new favorite band, but a reason to get up in the morning.

since 2004 the jeans have spent many a night playing in their hometown, no-rules hellhole, allentown’s legendary jeff the pigeon (rip). their first single, “throbbing organ” and album, shallow (both on parts unknown) set many self-styled punk scholars’ hearts a-flutter. songs like “ugly twin” sent jaws floor-ward by including a plaintive piano part in a bruiser of a song. such touches abound on hope for men. the album is diverse, but the jeans ain’t no dilettantes. mixing volatility with humor is a damned hard thing to master in music. pissed jeans do it with smarts and poignancy. consider the bar raised.

pissed jeans are:

bradley fry — guitar
dave rosenstraus — bass
matt korvette — vocals
sean mcguinness — drums

avatar

after 2004’s critically acclaimed blue cathedral, one might have expected comets on fire to blast off into the cosmos in an infinite flurry of lysergic spasmodicism. surprising, then, that they should turn in an earthy, more accessible and downright beautiful album as their follow-up. then again, it is a completely logical progression, but in reverse, sort of.

on avatar their astonishing new album, comets display development in every direction: as musicians, as songwriters, as arrangers and as singers (?!), without sacrificing one ounce of the intensity that is expected from our heroes. as on blue cathedral, the diversity of the material is staggering. avatar veers from swinging, bluesy explorations to piano-laced, progressive power balladry, to pure tribalism, evoking everyone from the allmans, to quicksilver, to procol harum, to some insane fela/sun ra/crazy horse hybrid, yet remains wholly comets on fire.

though they play cleaner and clearer, their firepower is evident and abundant. they have shifted gears and opened themselves up completely. you should do the same.

wolf eyes
human animal

after a year of non-stop touring in support of 2004’s burned mind, wolf eyes were ready; seasoned to travel through horrible new areas of sound. during one four-week period at the dawn of ‘06, they laid down the ideas that would shape the new album in their studio, the terror tank.

this new slab is the first with mike connelly (of hair police and the gods of tundra label) replacing aaron dilloway. though he no longer tours with the band, dilloway remains involved and helped to mix the new record with bmg (who also did the deed on burned mind).

these songs are rotten with metal, reeds, consciousness-erasing islands of black doom; bass-heavy rippers, late-night free-terror jams, afflicted dog-hearts, underwater crabs: pure mayhem. the new double bass attack is showcased on “human animal” and “rusted mange” with scraping strings and a full terror-shriek workout re-organized by dilloway. new directions are countered by “rationed rot,” which revisits the eerie throbbing gristle-esque vocal deployment that dates from wolf eyesdread lp. the album also features the band’s first ever cover song: a dead-on rendering of no fucker’s rotten hxc anthem, “noise not music,” which closed out a lot of shows on wolf eyes’ recent european tour.

as ever, wolf eyes will be living on the road, with australian and american tours in the works, and more on the horizon.

alpine static

combining avant-garde experimentalism picked up from their interest in composers like terry riley and steve reich with a fondness for ‘70s krautrock pioneers like ash ra tempel, and the gut-level thrust, heft and swing of black sabbath, the groundhogs and ‘60s/’70s mexican psych band los dug dug’s, kinski have established themselves as seattle’s foremost psych rock explorers. and, they have toured extensively throughout the u.s., europe, and japan, including tours with mission of burma, oneida, comets on fire, acid mothers temple and …trail of the dead.

alpine static is their second full-length for sub pop and finds the band capturing the explosive rush and emotional power of their live shows, where they range from sweeping, pastoral interludes through headlong, thunderous charges. recorded in january of 2005, alpine static is an immediate, visceral record. on it, kinski use riff, repetition, incremental layering, bursts of noise, sudden changes in pace and volume, all shot through with a sense of melody to provide new ways of seeing and feeling guitar-based rock.

but, more importantly than all that, kinski manage to infuse experimental music with emotion and fun. what they offer and the source of their appeal is more a full-bore sensory thrill-ride than anything else. kinski wants to take you to faraway places and show you exciting things. and alpine static is the key.

hailing from padova, italy, jennifer gentle is not a girl. jennifer gentle is, in fact, a band made up of singer/guitarist marco fasolo and drummer alessio gastaldello (joined by various accomplices when they play live).

valende is their third full-length, and first for sub pop (their first two albums, i am you are and funny creatures lane were released individually on italy’s sillyboy entertainment, and together as a double cd under the name ectoplasmic garden party by australia’s lexicon devil label).

the record was, like its predecessors, home-recorded by marco and alessio and it’s a psych pop charmer, drawing on the band’s own brand of musical dementia: an almost impossible-to-describe melting pot of whacked experimentation, deep fried eccentricity and acoustic beauty, drawing judiciously on the band’s long-term fascination with syd barrett, 13th floor elevators, and joe meek production techniques.

jennifer gentle is also the first italian band sub pop has ever signed (such is our deep affection for the band). but, again, jennifer gentle is not a girl.

blue cathedral

blue cathedral is the third album from comets on fire and their first for sub pop. it is also the bay area band’s most varied and richly textured album yet. with their first two albums, (2001’s self-titled debut/self-released and 2002’s field recordings from the sun on ba da bing!) they established themselves as flag-bearers of modern psychedelia. however, where their previous efforts are full-tilt psychedelic affairs, blue cathedral is harder to pin down (which elusiveness we heartily support).

their trademark sound is here enriched by more structured, keyboard-driven jams, churning blue oyster cult-ish chooglers and slow burners reminiscent of harvest-era pink floyd. they recently opened a string of dates for sonic youth and have also played shows with rocket from the tombs, dead meadow and dead moon, sunburned hand of the man and more. they also made a big fan outta lord head on high, julian cope, who said of them: “comets on fire deserve our gratitude…for their distillation of all the best rock riffs since high rise’s take on blue cheer” naturally, we agree.

burned mind

ann arbor, mi’s wolf eyes are at the forefront of a quickly expanding american noise scene. the trio of nate young, aaron dilloway and john olson are the epitome of the self-sufficient musical entity. olson and dilloway have their own labels (american tapes and hanson records respectively) that have been releasing cassettes, cdrs, 7”s, lps and just about every other format, often in painfully limited editions, of wolf eyes material since young first used the moniker in 1997.

their existence as a trio dates to 2000. and they’ve since released albums on bulb (dread, 2001) and troubleman unlimited (dead hills, 2002).

the music that wolf eyes creates is truly terrifying; the soundtrack to street fight that erupts into outright incineration. sonic touchstones include throbbing gristle, early cabaret voltaire, black flag, whitehouse, pre-asheton destroy all monsters, negative approach, swans and early sonic youth. the advocacy of the latter has led to many opening slots and a spot on the entire 2004 lollapalooza tour.

kinski’s sub pop full-length debut! (this record was also released as a limited ed. double lp, by the fine folks at strange attractors audio house)

new sub pop roster addition kinski is a (mostly…) instrumental rock quartet from seattle. by turns melodic, swelling, roaring, propulsive, and sparse, kinski walks the margins of avant-rock (ref. high rise, sonic youth, bardo pond, mogwai, gybe) with nods to krautrock and a penchant for noisy psychedelia.

airs above your station is kinski’s third full-length (after the self-released space launch for frenchie and 2001’s stunning be gentle with the warm turtle on pacifico recordings).
