harris newman - acoustic & electric guitars, lapsteel guitar
eric craven - drums ("thee opera house stomp")

of the players involved in the recent resurgence of fingerstyle guitar, harris newman has established himself as a primary envoy on the modern day steel-stringer shortlist. as with the case of his brothers-in-arms jack rose, glenn jones and steffen basho-junghans, each of whom borrow from the past traditions of mavericks fahey, basho et al but have re-invented the sound and style with fresh perspectives, newman distinguishes his music even further with a very idiosyncratic sound. a fixture in the montreal scene for years, newman cut his teeth early on by playing bass in constellation recording artists sackville. currently he is of the duo triple burner with cohort bruce cawdron (godspeed you! black emperor), and can be found on records by montreal bands hrsta and esmerine. newman also happens to be the mastering agent du jour for the montreal scene, bringing sparkle to recordings as diverse as wolf parade, a silver mt zion, fly pan am and carla bozulich. its speculation to claim that the post-modern rock sound which has come to define the montreal scene guides newman's approach to the acoustic guitar, but it is a resolute certainty that newman is charting terrain that sounds like few others. following up the critically acclaimed accidents with nature and each other (strange attractors, 2005), newman unveils his third album decorated, yet another beautiful, forward-thinking take on the steel-string sound.

in contrast to the name of the album, harris newman opts for a somewhat stripped-down, almost minimalist approach to decorated. subtle and introspective, the first half of the album showcases newman's brand of solo acoustic guitar. mood and color take precedence, as newman's fingerpicking weaves tonal spirals across each composition. melodies bob and weave from alternate pacing, balanced between space and sound like strands of tinsel clinging to a tree. marking a stylistic turning point in the album, "blues for vilhelm" is a humming incantation for lapsteel guitar, a minimalist sound pool rippling ever outwards. following with the languid improvisation "golden valleys as seen from the east", newman stretches out and explores intoxicating themes, coaxing out melodies which quickly blossom and decay in slowly unfurling spools. newman picks up the electric guitar with "thee opera house stomp", and backed by the forward momentum of drummer eric craven, the song embarks from a country-blues riff headlong into serpentine trajectory reminiscent of the arty twang of gastr del sol. extracting elements of folk and blues and exposing it bare, harris newman dresses up his music in cinematic, "post-rock" attire. decorated is accessible solo guitar music for the experimentally minded, a meditative electro-acoustic melding of leo kottke and jim o'rourke, illustrating why newman's own take on the tradition sets him apart from the pack.

much has been said about the jewelled antler collective, the fertile womb from which thuja emits its primordial ooze, and of thuja itself. a loose-knit assembly of like minded sound ecologists who study the connections between their immediate environment and the music created by its players, jewelled antler claims a multitude of music makers in its orbit - blithe sons, skygreen leopards, franciscan hobbies being just a mere cross-section.

thuja, however, remains one of the earliest and best-known incarnations. steven r. smith (solo, mirza, hala strana), glenn donaldson (skygreen leopards, mirza, franciscan hobbies etc), loren chase (id battery, etc), and rob reger (franciscan hobbies, etc) coalesce interests in field recordings, found sound, experimentalism, folk and psychedelic rock (among others) to weave seriously detailed and immense journeys into pure sound. thuja's albums on emperor jones, tumult, and a host of cdrs showcase their idiosyncratic improvisations in varying degrees, but none go deeper to the core of perception as does pine cone temples, thuja's darkest and most sensitive exploration of inner and outer space to date.

by incorporating real-time recordings of natural sounds from their particular surroundings, the four members of thuja play off each other and the space they inhabit with impeccable instinct, succeeding in creating eerie yet strikingly melodic compositions. the end result is a total immersion of the senses, for both the player and the listener. across the grand expanse of pine cone template's two discs, implements such as piano, guitars, percussion, and well-placed contact mics are blended like pigments to conjure the subtlest of sonics, pulling every lost drop of their immediate universe into floating and buzzing cinematics. minimalist hues are brush-stroked into being and slowly unfurl into the atmosphere. improvised clouds of sound softly erupt to form compositions of such immense and precise detail, it would seem the music was written out rather than spontaneously developed. such is the magic of thuja and their uncanny ability to sculpt microscopic psychedelia from their immediate environment and collective consciousness.

assembled from recordings that span 1999-2004 and housed in lovely double gatefold cardboard packaging, pine cone temples documents the most organic and beautiful ambience thuja has conjured to date.

steffen basho-junghans
7 books
saah20/21 2xcd
released: april 6, 2004

after re-exposing his roots to the compositional acoustic guitar tradition with the pastoral, utterly grandiose rivers and bridges (saah010, 2003), steel-string guitar maverick steffen basho-junghans ups the ante with his ninth album (fourth for strange attractors), a sprawling and vastly intricate double album entitled 7 books. the final entry in a series of inter-related albums exploring a new sound possibility and approach to the acoustic guitar (landscapes in exile, inside and waters in azure), 7 books returns to the remarkable excursions into the heart and soul of the instrument that first raised eyebrows towards the berlin-based artist.

with over two hours of music spread across two discs, 7 books finds basho-junghans stretching way out, mutating the steel string tradition into the most elaborate excursion into sound and composition that has ever fluttered from his fingertips. basho-junghans' experimental works are microcosms of his chance discoveries with the acoustic steel string guitar, focusing in on a particular aspect of his epiphanies; 7 books gathers all of these microcosms into one big bang, erupting into a vast universe of subtle and complex sound galaxies. 12-string guitar provides the template for 7 books, and on disc one, each "book" (composition) opens and closes with a deep array of chapters and passages. chiming tones, pulsating percussive runs, finger scrapes and dazzling finger techniques build and build in raga-like fashion. disc two focuses on music composed with slide guitar, and basho-junghans' particular alien glissandos dance like refracted light, a gloriously disorienting sound broadcast seemingly from a foreign land. tone, color, timbre, rhythm and space are explored and exposed across the entire expanse of the album, the music comprising a degree of intricacy that compels the listener to fully engage, for attentive listening reveals a host of various sound-worlds. all the more awe-inspiring when you consider that basho-junghans, as always, recorded 7 books in real time, with absolutely no effects, implements or alternate instrumentation used.

minimalism, eastern raga, trance-inducing repetition, spectralist tonal investigations, folk and american fingerstyle steel-string tradition coalesce into one astounding epic for the solo acoustic guitar. steffen basho-junghans follows his instincts above everything else and discovers a myriad of universes within a solitary instrument, inventing a new language in the process. 7 books is his most aggressive work, a startling mosaic of compositional sound discovery illustrating that the possibilities of an age-old instrument are still being revealed.

steffen basho-junghans
rivers and bridges
saah010 cd only
released: february 18, 2003

the music of steffen basho-junghans occupies a dimension all its own. three astounding, singular experimental acoustic guitar albums in three years (inside, waters in azure and landscapes in exile) have dramatically reinvented the possibilities of the acoustic guitar, exposing a universe-within-a-universe of the instrument by way of a radical reinterpretation of the solo steel-string tradition. as groundbreaking as these recent works are, basho-junghans certainly has not forgotten his roots. those first epiphanies he felt upon discovering the classic sound of takoma records (as defined by john fahey, peter lang, leo kottke and the mighty robbie basho) continues to resonate strongly within him. rivers and bridges, although recorded around the time of his experimental works, marks a stylistic departure from his recent explorations and a return to those seminal steel string influences, celebrating the ecstatic beauty of impressionist guitar and folk music from the americas and the east across six lush, shimmering compositions.rivers and bridges is a pastoral experience, rich in color and texture, coursing through various moods with a river allegory at its' core. impressionist six-string dramaturgy cascade forth, ebbing and flowing in steady raga-like waves, across placid sound pools and frothing tonal rapids. through each piece a myriad of sounds and styles are explored, touching upon american folk, native american linearity, middle eastern resonance, east indian raga and western classical with heartfelt ease - and often within the same tune. propelled all the while by an intricate sense of melodic invention, the depth of imagery and complexity of texture is remarkable and simply gorgeous.reminiscent of his songs of the earth (sublingual, 2000)and the timeless takoma records sound, rivers and bridges is an instant classic acoustic guitar record, sounding familiar and yet imbued with subtleties unlike anything else you've heard before. steffen basho-junghans rounds out the elaborate scope of his music with rivers and bridges, proving why he is widely regarded as one of today's most important acoustic guitar figures. recorded solo in real time, with no overdubs or effects used.
