... thanks for everyone's patience during the move !!! while it did take about a week longer than scheduled to get even the most basic elements of mms up & running again (i.e. records back on the shelves [in order !!!] ; packing & shipping bench upright & operational) we can safely say that things are finally getting back to normal around here ...

... we're just about caught up with invoicing & shipping orders placed during our closure & we've started opening up the dozens of boxes of new titles that arrived in our absence, updating the site here to show all of the new arrival & restock activities over the past few weeks (scanner & stereo are still boxed up, so full workups are still pending) ...

... as a token of appreciation to everyone that helped us out by placing a "closeout" order in the days leading up to the move (and due to a number of requests for more time to properly investigate / strategize a more thorough sweep of the dwindling list of titles on offer) i've extended the exhaustive "closeoupacolypse" one final time until the end of the spring ; this should afford everyone the proper resources to make their final selections ...

sp 034 / brett naucke
seed
lp

written & recorded using ritual variations of of a singular patch for modular synthesiser in chicago, il & field recordings made in miami, fl november 2012-july 2013.

mastered at d+m, berlin by cgb, january 2014.
artwork by nina hartmannlayout by brett naucke

if previous releases for nihilist, arbor and his own catholic tapes established chicago's brett naucke as one of the more accomplished practitioners in the american synth underground, "seed", his debut lp for spectrum spools, is a veritable career apex, brimming with sonic ingenuity, detail, and mastery over both instrument and musical form.

it is hard to fathom due to the sheer diversity of sound and affectations of the eight individual pieces on the album, but "seed" was recorded - almost impossibly - with the same synth patch, slightly modified for the unveiling of each track. this testifies to the intensity of naucke's macroscopic conceptual vision for "seed". each track's complex arc points towards a mind rooted in academic electronic processes, keenly trying to surprise and disarm by prying open new textures, rhythms and structures. but naucke has struck a perfect balance that unites this avant-garde intuition with a compositional sophistication - bringing each unique molecule of sound into cohesive songs and further still into a supremely listenable and closed album that operates entirely on its own logic.

recorded at home, as well as an isolated environment in miami, florida, and then mixed tediously over a six month period, "seed" is a record displaying naucke's instrumental proficiency as much as it points to his painstaking studio dedication. the results are nothing short of startling. naucke achieves a perfect synchronicity between the intrigue of each shimmering, crystalline sound that seems to exist infinitely within its own micro-habitat, and the larger organic whole to which it contributes. combining delicate ambient synthscapes, snarled electronic pulses and subtle and beautiful melodic phrasings "seed" hovers in an emotional sphere very much of its own. each piece stitches together resplendent widescreen atmosphere with an intricate coldness and mournful elegance. over the course of this album, naucke has come as close as any to making the machines he has used sprout from the same soil as the organic landscapes he so perfectly renders on this album.

when the aquaplano records were first released in 2008 and 2009, emerging out of hardwax with little fanfare, they were distinctly out of step with the way techno appeared to be heading. the minimal detour was reaching its logical endpoint, and producers were returning to the 1990s for inspiration, with berghain and sandwell district at the vanguard of a new techno movement. what the aquaplano sessions shared in common were slower bpms and finding inspiration in the 1990s, but there they parted ways. the influences these italians were drawing on were rather different, returning to tribal rhythms and ambient textures to sketch out a much more heady, psychedelic form of techno. the results were a perfect balance of hypnotic beats and swirling atmosphere geared for a broken-in dancefloor or the hazy afterhours. across these two records dozzy and nuel would go a long way towards creating the template for a brand of deep, atmospheric techno that has become much more prominent in the years since. and while many have sought to imitate this sound, few - if any - have matched what first emerged from the aquaplano sessions. after only being available in a very limited run, it is fitting that the sonic blueprints provided by dozzy and nuel are now available again - and much more widely - at a time when their influence is as strong as it has ever been.

how can we imagine the future of the world, away from the standards of time that we have insisted upon giving it? how to conceive of the movements of a world in its arcs and sweeps of continents and oceans across ages without reducing it to cheap historical humanisations? does a past, present or future even matter to the yet-to-exist events of ungraspable and fundamental ecological time?

pangaea ultima, steve moore’s debut record on spectrum spools, is an epic musical achievement, not simply for its sonic sophistication and compositional mastery, but also because moore has crafted here an album that has gone as close to any in transcending the boxed human logic of time and place. the album title refers to the name which geologists have given to the future super-continent that is suggested may form on earth in the next quarter-of-a-billion years. over the course of the 9 pieces on pangaea ultima, moore meditates upon the realisation of this new land mass in an uncharted part of the world’s moment. how will this continent come to be formed? what forces and what processes create it? what is this continent’s terrain of endless mountains and endless caverns, and on what kind of planet will it be? these are all speculative questions that alight the listener as they are subsumed into steve moore’s synthscapes which unfurl with equal amounts of delicacy and meticulous detail.

in some respects, the attitude and ambition of pangaea ultima places this work in a similar canon as the mythic territory of tangerine dream’s phaedra or the cosmic imaginations of michael stearns’ planetary unfolding, and yet it evades both comparisons as easily. there is something mysteriously self-contained, urgent that pervades these assemblages of tracks. logotone exhibits moore’s ability to stretch the sensibilities of melodic and chordal phrasing to limits that schulze or alan hawkshaw wouldn’t have gone. the compositions on pangaea ultima, like planetwalk and nemesis are more tightly coiled even in their constant straining to explode outwards to the stars beyond. and when moore plays with rhythms, they resemble the idiosyncratic mould of his releases for long island electrical systems, future times and kompakt, and yet seem to push even further towards an eerie sparseness yet to be fully tapped. if there are 4/4 kicks on pangaea ultima, like on deep time and the title track, its for a world skewed on a bent axis. musically, this is a record of both microscopic and macroscopic reward, an absorbing listen that betrays the albums 60 minutes of length.

which again returns us to the question of time and how so expertly moore has managed to avoid it. or more so, how he has managed to find a fold in time - an atemporal space - where this album anomalously nestles by itself. moore reaches out to the moment of genesis of pangaea ultima and slips into its imaginary logic of time and place. he does not intrude or indulge there. nor are there any “retro” homages or “sci-fi” tropes/ambitions on pangaea - we can not even be sure whether humans have a history they can call a future on this continent. yet just as easily, as geologists concede, this future super-continent may never end up eventuating, which would mean this imminently possible reality will melt into fantasy. but this too, is not a bad place for steve moore’s masterpiece to end up either.

red anxiety tracers
lp

release date december 16, 2013

max eilbacher's red anxiety tracers is the debut long player from the multi-talented baltimore, maryland stalwart . elibacher has performed with various projects such as matmos, horse lords, and the mind-altering underground needle gun aktionist unit. despite years of busy touring and recording, red anxiety tracers is the first vinyl artifact from this young mastermind.

crafted over the course of a year, “tracers” is a labyrinth of shapes and sounds which glide through a complex and arcane environment of found sounds and synthesis. an expertly crafted maze of deja-vu, audio hallucinations, and dislocating atmospheric forms an audio obstacle course for the listener. complex editing techniques and sound structures recalls the works of j.d. robb or owl records era tod dockstader albeit witha radically fresh perspective and educated hindsight.

"red anxiety tracers" exhumes impeccable flow and careful attention to dynamic range, with it's surgical placement of sound events challenging the deep listening abilities of it's audience. raw and manic tension overloads are cut with alien float and abstract aether transmissions with a constantly shifting palette of sounds spun from blasted modular electronics, vocoded terrestrial-speak, and glowing mellotron clouds. eilbacher communicates a strange and beautiful dialect conceived through disciplined compositional structure and an intuitive improvisational style unparalleled in the current landscape. "red anxiety tracers" breathes new life into modern electronic composition.

september 2013 release ; ... after close to a decade of activity (and at least a dozen releases ; split tapes, singles, and cd-r’s for tanzprocesz, i just live here, vanishing, hot releases, breathmint, and her own tangled hares ... despite the press release below) this does feel like the mass-market entrance from val martino’s unicorn hard-on project, offering a sextet of downtempo tracks that come in between the ebm of meat beat manifesto, nin, et.al and the more woogly sectors of the mid-2000’s post-no-fun noise-scene ...

weird universe
lp

release date september 30, 2013

valerie martino's unicorn hard-on project has been a long running staple in the american underground since it's inception in 2003. through her own tangled hares imprint, as well as many others, she's built a strong, constantly evolving catalog of singular works that serves to many as a prototype of the current beat-oriented phenomena currently sweeping the nation. martino's vision, however, remains unphased and flourishes accordingly to her own unique vision; standing outside of any trends and remaining loyal to the unicorn hard-on sound. despite having been constantly touring, releasing music, booking shows and occupying various cities throughout the u.s. over the last 10 years, there has been no full length unicorn hard-on lp until now.

"weird universe" delivers on all fronts, encompassing all styles of the projects past and present to create a cohesive and definitive debut album. the album pounds with martino's signature drum thud and percussive clatter, filing in the crevices with her signature electronic static and keen melodic phrasing. the album's opening track, "rock salt", kicks in the door and unwinds itself into spiraling mania of ramping bass tones with only a steady rhythm keeping it from going off the rails completely. many of unicorn hard-on's classic elements remain intact, with a wide array of bizarre modulations and deeply layered subconscious structures. versatility and evolution are exhibited in tracks like "houndstooth" or "wet pet", which play out like an extraterrestrial rachmad cut, or perhaps like a classic psyche styled craig track with hypnotic, time altering melodic patterns and impeccably calculated rhythm programming.

all comparisons aside, this record thrives in its own "weird universe", making this a thrilling debut album 10 years in the works.

2lp

release date september 2, 2013

mastered and cut at 45 rpm at dubplates & mastering, berlin, may 2013

in hindsight, the pairing of chris madak and donato dozzy was inevitable from the moment when the two connected on mount naeba, japan at the storied party labyrinth last fall. both artists have worked to craft singular visions unlike anything else happening in electronic music today, yet despite each producer's unmistakable indivuality there is a deeper reservoir of shared sensibility between them which makes "donato dozzy plays bee mask" feel like a logical and necessary event.

2012 saw the release of madak's monumental "when we were eating unripe pears" album along with the astounding "vaporware" 12" for room 40, the title track of which opened bee mask's labyrinth performance to memorable effect. dozzy had an equally massive year thanks the release of the acclaimed "voices from the lake" album with neel, which set the bar for intricate, subtle, and forward-thinking contemporary techno at a new high. both artists have pushed the respective boundaries of their work to arrive at the point of this crucial and welcome overlap: a double album of material from the "vaporware" sessions, re-imagined as only dozzy could do it.

initially commissioned for a single remix, dozzy found so much possibility in the source material that he turned in over an hour of material, making a standalone release the only reasonable course of action. the results are absolutely divine, a suite of seven pieces of time-stopping bliss in which the structure and melodies of "vaporware" glitter through the prism of dozzy's singular production style. the meeting of these powerful minds provides evidence of an unparalleled organic chemistry. when listening to these works we hear the worlds of bee mask and donato dozzy bleed into one another, creating a new sonic entity with a life of its own — one which with any luck will not end at this release.

escape from new york
lp

release date july 8, 2013

flashback to 2009, maybe late winter or something like that. the road chief comes back from his extended stay in belgium all laced up with new jams from the underground. we're blazing the trails of the ne ohio streets and valleys and on his stereo he's got this "palm - escape from new york" disc. i become immediately intrigued and bewildered - so many questions to ask. "who is this?" "when was this made?" "how was it made?"

feeling pert, we moved forward to pursue a vinyl release for the now deceased wagon imprint, in high hopes we could deliver this platter immediately, being the non-stop jam that it is. many emails, dead ends, events, tours, records, other releases, projects later the record seemed like it would never happen. we couldn't get anything lined up, we didn't have the time to get the ball rolling, and years had started passing by quickly.

flash forward to two months ago, loading up my ipod shuffle to take to work, and i see "palm - escape from new york" in the "tunez" folder. a few cups off coffee into work and jamming the "escape from new york" at maximum volume, work became very productive all of a sudden - but i became so bothered by the mystery of this album that i had to go home and do some research. i tried some various contacts and shot a few emails without any expectation. only days later i received word back from the palm mastermind. he says "yes".

so here we are, four years later, and this album will finally be pressed. this record was downloaded over 5,000</i> times from the palm myspace and bandcamp pages; and now it will finally become a tangible artifact.

"escape from new york" is an enigmatic blast of fully focused, high-speed pursuit tunes channeling the 1984 tropical shoreline highway. the imaginary soundtrack to the escape from your most intense predicament. the album exists in it's own universe, completely belonging to the highway chase vision. "escape from new york" was made in january of 2009, and it still slams just as hard as it did the first time i heard it.

the album unfolds in a linear way where every track is essential to the whole - the album is the movie. "street stallion" kicks off the record proper, with a dead serious synth lead, a seriously reverbed out rainbow arcing sequence, and a kick drum that will fill your entire room up. this track sees reprise in the varied form of "street hawk" later on. tracks like "dark movie screens" and "desert driver" pound relentlessly hard and will have you all wrapped up in hypnotic drum machine patterns and overlapping melody with driving electro vibes, somewhat reminiscent of the legendary "nature makes a mistake" track (that running back did a killer 12" of) except completely off the hook, with the same forward driving sense of rhythm and drive. meanwhile tracks like "ghost cars" and "invisible beach" keep the wheels turning with complex structures and polyrhythms that will have you asking yourself how something could possibly be so catchy. "space again", closes the album leaving you wanting to flip the record and hear more palm jams.

an honor, a pleasure, and a relief with some closure to this mystery to finally have this in a physical form.

mayville dream
lp

release date 29.04.2013

ben billington is a resident chicago staple and multi-instrumentalist crucial to the metro area experimental landscape. he can morph his styles seamlessly and is fluent in many musical languages, whether he's playing in moonrises, circuit de yeux (as a touring drummer) or in the legendary underground free-jazz unit tiger hatchery. "mayville" is the sophmore lp following his "silver balloons in clusters" lp on under the spire (while originally released as a cassette on deception island some time ago.)

with "mayville dream", it's all billington and the results are outstanding. taking from every direction and experience his knowledge and songcraft, billington has crafted a well-varied album of instrumental suites that are as eclectic as they are eccentric. being primarily trained as a drummer, various kinds of percussion appear throughout with many rhythmic angles that accent the intricate melodies and structures to make them truly unique. the opener "the many roads to mayville" opens with a concrete flutter before doing a complete 180 into a total color storm of melody and syncopated percussion. "institutes innards" flips the mood right away with its deep urgency and melodies that demand introspect. tracks like "bemus has wings to fly" and and "closer to tonawanda" display an ability to thickly layer pieces and parts to make a logical whole while displaying elements of early psychedelic rock and with the knowledge of early private sides in tow. "mayville dream" has a special impact because you hear billington stretch himself out over every playing style he knows and beyond to create something that's all his own.

extended production notes:

material study 01 (sand) is a recording from a stereo hydrophone buried under the sand in a lake. standing on top of the transducer, holding the minidisc recorder in my hand, and monitoring the feed with a pair of in-ear earphones, i slowly shifted my weight and the sand beneath my feet. my younger brother was on the shore throwing firecrackers into the water; this was an accidental aspect of the recording.

material study 02 (cello and jacket) is made from a cello as it is dropped onto a carpeted floor with a contact microphone taped to it’s bridge. the moment of impact was frozen with an infinite sustain effect pedal. both the sustained tone and the live feed from the contact microphone were played into the room at high volume while the contact mic was still attached to the cello. this was recorded. roughly one year later year later this cello drop recording was amplitude modulated in a computer audio synthesis environment by a pair of stereo contact microphones taped to a wind breaker being blown by an air circulator as it hung from the ceiling by a string.

spatialisation study 01 (one freeze from seven positions in a house) is made from four frozen tones generated from a file on my computer in a computer audio synthesis environment. the four tones were played back simultaneously in an arbitrary stereo spread at a high volume on a home entertainment system in the living room of a house with high ceilings. the stereo and computer were both left undisturbed for an afternoon, and their output was recorded to a portable sd card recorder via a matched pair of stereo omnidirectional condenser microphones mounted on a homemade disk baffle (for accurate stereo imaging) from seven positions within the house (order of presentation: 01 in the dining room, 02 on the second floor landing, 03 in the middle of the upstairs hallway, 04 in the middle of the upstairs hallway close to the floor, 05 in the front room close to the floor, 06 in the living room facing the speakers close to the floor, 07 in the living room facing away from the speakers close to the floor). using a daw, two minutes from each recorded position in the house were combined into the eight minute track here; identical overlapping envelopes were superimposed on each two minute segment, fading in for one minute and then fading out for one minute, with the subsequent segment beginning to rise in amplitude as the previous begins to fall.

spatialisation study 02 (forty-nine tracks of isolated and overlayed clicks generated from the material and positions of the previous study) is made from the convolution of randomly generated stereo clicks with the seven two minute segments (mentioned above) in a computer audio synthesis environment. each of these seven tracks were individually convolved and played back into the house. the output was recorded to a portable sd card recorder via a matched pair of stereo omnidirectional condenser microphones mounted on a homemade baffle disk (for accurate stereo imaging). a recording was made from each of the seven source tracks in each of the seven positions (mentioned above), for a total of forty-nine recordings. using a daw, one second was excerpted from each of the forty-nine tracks, playing one click from each source-position pair; all forty-nine tracks then play simultaneously.

a pencil rubbing for the album cover is made from a pencil rubbing of the texture of a wall. a 7 ” x 11” piece of rice paper was taped onto a wall with stereo contact microphones taped to the wall along the top and bottom edges of the paper. a pencil was slowly rubbed against the paper in vertical lines from top to bottom (or l to r according to the stereo configuration of the microphones) and recorded direct to computer. the rubbing produced from this process was scanned into the computer and can be seen on the cover of the album.

translations 01 was written, produced and recorded by michael pollard in the time between june 2011 and october 2012 in a variety of locations. the audio was mastered by russell haswell on october 2nd 2012 and cut by rashad becker at dubplates and mastering on october 17th 2012. it is intended for playback in a room via loudspeakers.

recorded labor day weekend 2012, providence, ri

providence, ri's (recently relocated from nashville, tn) container returns with another slab of alternate universe bent techno. schofield's take on that over used genre is not only unique but utterly compelling, forming a modern and exciting new sound. while the classic container sound is still in tact, this album offers a look into a previously closed door in the container sound world.

"lp", like its predecessor "lp", is recorded in mono and its cuts right down the middle of your skull, and doesn't float around in imaginary room, these new tracks are immediate and heavy. kicking off the delayed trip of "dripping", a rhythmic bone akin to a rusty swing in a ghetto playground, morphs seamlessly into complex maze that is "paralyzed". closing the side is a real stomper head-cleaner of a track, the mighty "acclimator".

side b opens with "perforate", a bass line straight from mute-era d.a.f, which mutates into an elastic acid line, building into a full rhythm’n’noise spectacle. the disc closes proper with the mad rush for the bar that is the epic "refract". lp is a rough and raw ride, adding very much needed gristle to pale face of the stagnant minimal scene.

off/on is an evolutionary act of fissure, the opening of a rift in forma’s sonic landscape. the second lp from the brooklyn cosmic synth trio of mark dwinell, sophie lam, and george bennett, off/on’s universe is darker, its terrain more enigmatic and aggressive than 2011’s critically acclaimed s/t.

recorded at the renowned schoolhouse space in bushwick, off/on combines swirling arpeggiations, gnarled sequences, and deconstructed motorik rhythms to conjure an atmosphere of entropic propulsion by unseen forces. yet the emotional summits of off/on are greater than those of its predecessor, its crystalline melodic peaks made more pronounced by the shadowed depths below. it is this synthesis that gives off/on its singular vision; a sense of unity forged by its own inner tensions.

when we were eating unripe pears
lp

release date 19.11.2012

that old saw about dancing and architecture notwithstanding, i am like most people who make records in that i do not especially relish the task of writing about them. (better to focus on putting one's pants on both legs at a time and using one's sèvres china every day, if you ask me.) that's not to say that writing about records is a worthless or futile undertaking — far from it; however, as artists ideate in their media of choice, they implicitly challenge the assumption that the written word is the privileged medium of ideation — or at least they do so to the extent that their work succeeds. this truism aside, i seem to have drawn the proverbial short straw, and so it falls to me to tell you something useful about when we were eating unripe pears, a record which i recently completed, and which will be released shortly (perhaps by the time you read this, even) by spectrum spools.

the seven pieces on this lp were developed over a period of about five years; rain in coffee is built on a hyperborean trenchtown-era demo, while pinq drinqsorrel, for the record, and neither guava nor antacid as certain wags have already ventured — was reanimated directly from the cutting room floor, eleventh hour twenty-twelve. as a whole, they should probably be considered the proper "sequel" to canzoni dal laboratorio del silenzio cosmico, extending that record's preoccupation with the dream interiors of post-1965 fellini and synthesizing (pun very much not intended) it with elegy for beach friday's fascination with the lush and abject facets of advanced gastronomy and the embrace of the recursive, solipsistic, simultaneously expansive and claustrophobic universe of the sampler on vaporware/scanops.

however, in direct contrast to each of those prior works, when we were eating unripe pears draws more deeply on formal ideas from the history of records than any bee mask release to date. toward this end, most of its constituent tracks were hammered into their finished shapes "on the road" throughout 2011 and 2012. those of you who heard me on tour in the united states, canada, australia, and japan, and particularly at voice of the valley, the bunker, and labyrinth played a part in the process of shaping this material and so may well experience the shock of the familiar.

when we were eating unripe pears was recorded in cleveland and philadelphia between 2007-2012. it was edited and mixed at tranquility base in summer 2012, mastered and cut by rashad becker at dubplates and mastering, and pressed by pallas group. mark price did the photography and layout. special thanks are also owed to jason anderson, katherine brady, matt carlson, john elliott, lawrence english, daniel lopatin, and alex moskos, without whose perspectives this would be a very different and much lesser beast.

persuasive barrier
lp

release date 03.12.2012

recorded by ed sunspot 2008-2012 at resonant hole, lexington, ky.

music and artwork by robert beatty
mastered by james plotkin

three legged race is the ongoing, ever evolving project of robert beatty, a lexington, kentucky based multi-media artist and founding member of noise band hair police. 2012 has been a busy year for beatty as he's provided his personal brand of visual art for countless excellent albums, and has also released new audio works (the outstanding "wrong element" 12" on acoustic division is essential). "persuasive barrier" is the debut full length album from three legged race, recorded over a period of five years.

the album begins with "traces of a wet crowd", creating a spacious and synthetic environment for the album to unfold upon with it's rolling, cryptic vocal spray and high-frequency pulsing. "traces" seamlessly collides with "permethrin", a track which suspends the listener in juxtaposed clatter and wide open space. "persuasive barrier" plays like a lost mort garson theme accidentally found on haruomi hosono's soundtrack to the fictional film "cochin moon". the lonely vocal passages and dream-like melody trails lead the listener down a very personal path, where the visual and audio aspects of beatty's world leave the artist exposed for your examination. listen carefully, these moments are woven together in a complex way that warrants repeat visits to this special stasis.

the flip of "barrier" starts with the warm "butter colored hallway", which hovers over the stereo field like a hot cloud, slowly moving and dripping micro details as it floats into "locked eyes", which is another wonderful and melodic passage. the album heads for the abstract and jagged budgeting air before arriving at a complex bed of rhythms ("permethrin ii") where the album comes full circle.

"persuasive barrier" sees beatty organize many of his musical ideas and themes old and new into a fluid, flowing and comprehensive debut. this is a new high watermark in his discography, and a fine and welcome addition to the spectrum spools catalog.

live improvised music by eric lanham

design by robert beaty

it's been a long time coming and it's great to finally announce the release of eric lanham's "the sincere interruption", his first long-playing record under his own name after performing for years under various solo guises such carl calm and palmetto moon electronic group and as one half of the caboladies equation. commissioned back in the summer of 2011, it was finally recorded in march 2012 and it's been well worth the wait.

lanham has crafted a very special set of improvised electronic compositions which rise above many of the contemporaries of his ilk. with an eye on both the origins of electronic music as well as the not so distant past, "the sincere interruption" was recorded in superb fidelity with great attention to sound placement and frequency variations. elements of late 90's-early 00's mille plateaux / warp styled disjointed rhythms are bent into surgically precise and meticulously pieced concrete / electronic form, crammed with information overload situations and infinite variables to one's listening perception. it's a challenge to hear the album the same way twice with the sheer amount of action and peculiarity happening over the duration.

while there are indeed busy moments throughout, tracks like "21:00" and "no ordinates" display an attention to control and deep focus, relying on an idea which develops and evolves seamlessly in subtle variation while retaining a repetitive nature. an outstanding effort and a great addition to the ever evolving spectrum spools catalog.

complete with an outstanding master and cut by cgb and dubplates and mastering.

jared's lot
lp

it's been nearly two years since we've heard new music from gary war and we are excited to announce the release of his inevitable breakthrough "jared's lot".

through the years we have heard the developments from the d.i.y. psychedelia of "new raytheonport" to the more current electronic acid-prog tracks we heard from "horribles parade" and the most recent "police water" ep. "jared's lot" brings the years of laboring and hard work full circle, with every facet of the project dialed into perfection. these tight and intelligently arranged pieces are the most concise and mind-blowing set of songs presented yet and we're sure you'll have a hard time taking this off your turntable.

the album kicks off with the incredibly anthemic "thousand yard stare", which asserts immediately that the album is very different than previous efforts, crafted with hind-sight in mind and glowing with ambition. we can hear the melancholy voice of a man lost in the cosmos with nothing to lose going for broke, it's all or nothing. tracks like "superlifer" and "pleading for annihilation" contain such a powerful energy and pack such a wallop that you won't possibly be able to stand still. there is a great juxtaposition however, with songs like "advancements in disgust" and "world after" experimenting with new styles of pop / rock structure and incorporation of odd rhythm and melody.

gary has a masterful control of his machines, and you can tell that countless hours were spent making sure that the vision came direct and absolutely pure, from his mind to the record you will hold in your hands. even though we have a more synthetic based set of tracks, it's apparent that these transmissions are messages that are based in our reality, evoking a boundless range of emotions throughout.

the hectic fidelity of gary war's previous recordings have morphed into a unique production style which rewards with it's rich tone and multi-layered tiers of sound and melody. we are witnessing a huge leap forward in both sound and vision, respectively. meanwhile, the alienated code hardly discernible to the listener and clever pop structure remains, and in top form, making this album a warmly received gift to the spectrum spools catalog.

fear that man who has nothing to lose.

the album kicks off with the incredibly anthemic "thousand yard stare", which asserts immediately that the album is very different than previous efforts, crafted with hind-sight in mind and glowing with ambition. we can hear the melancholy voice of a man lost in the cosmos with nothing to lose going for broke, it's all or nothing. tracks like "superlifer" and "pleading for annihilation" contain such a powerful energy and pack such a wallop that you won't possibly be able to stand still. there is a great juxtaposition however, with songs like "advancements in disgust" and "world after" experimenting with new styles of pop / rock structure and incorporation of odd rhythm and melody.

gary has a masterful control of his machines, and you can tell that countless hours were spent making sure that the vision came direct and absolutely pure, from his mind to the record you will hold in your hands. even though we have a more synthetic based set of tracks, it's apparent that these transmissions are messages that are based in our reality, evoking a boundless range of emotions throughout.

the hectic fidelity of gary war's previous recordings have morphed into a unique production style which rewards with it's rich tone and multi-layered tiers of sound and melody. we are witnessing a huge leap forward in both sound and vision, respectively. meanwhile, the alienated code hardly discernible to the listener and clever pop structure remains, and in top form, making this album a warmly received gift to the spectrum spools catalog.

fear that man who has nothing to lose.

lp

release date 10.07.2012

outer space is a rapidly evolving sound entity headed by john elliott and joined by a constantly rotating cast of midwestern u.s. electronic figures. "akashic record" sees the project grow in many different directions from the self-titled arbor album created throughout 2008 and 2009 while retaining similar aesthetics of synthesizer experimentation and it's esoteric relations.

recorded over the course of a year with close engineering assistance and compositional contributions from andrew veres in home and studio situations, a fresh array of fidelities and ideas previously unexplored have been mined and documented. new contributions from the elusive philip whiteside (of wavehead) and drew mcdowall (past coil / current mirror eye member) expand, stretch and challenge previous working methods. in the tradition of many other past releases, jeff hatfield (of cleveland, ohio's fragments) makes his essential appearance as well. "akashic record" sees the project move on from the stripped down, primitive nature of the old into a more urgent, fractured and aggressive set of reality based compositions.

the work was created based on the events of others in mind; those doomed to circumstances beyond predictability or imagination.

release date 12.06.2012

spectrum spools is pleased to release the debut album by veteran musician toko yasuda's plvs vltra project.

toko has been working for years already in established pop acts such as enon, blonde redhead and now touring with st. vincent handling synthesizer duties for live events. in all her years of songcraft there have been sparse, if any solo output, until now.

"and now for something different..." as we say here at the spectrum spools headquarters.

"parthenon" is a sugar-sweet album of catchy pop songs, crafted with expert precision and outstanding composition logic. everything is locked in in a way that seems at once like clockwork, and also somehow very free. as if alice coltrane's "universal consciousness" was reimagined and sent into the future to be reimagined as an electronic pop record. most of the album's focus lies on the glowing, ethereal voice that is unmistakably exclusive to yasuda. swirling, fine tuned electronic washes and collaged clouds of ambiance swirl and hover around these mega catchy tunes giving them a fantastic depth which commands attention and repeat visits. yasuda's songcraft here is in peak form as well, with ultra catchy hooks and addictive melodies that have been dialed in to perfection over the many years of making music. one of the most brilliant facets of "parthenon" is the anti-genre omniverse vibe, where all borders and boundries set to confine music to a general one word descriptor are shattered. "pop" is a word abused to catch-all, and like any great, well-thought album, "parthenon" refuses to be pinned down. here is your summer jam! enjoy!

release date 29.05.2012

alexander moskos is a seasoned canadian avant-garde musician active in projects such as alterity problem with joel taylor and the legendary thames, who had an incredible 7" release on american tapes in late 2011. drainolith, his solo guise, has been active since the mid noughties but has remained relatively under the radar with mysterious private press cassette and cd-r releases. in 2009 moskos picked up a heavy u.s. tour regiment and caught the attention of u.s. underground heads with impressive live sets. it was around this time that moskos began to dial in songs for his debut "fighting!" lp, which we are eager to present.

it's important to keep listeners on their toes and spectrum spools is fully psyched to hit you with an album of delusional blues - littered with fractured synth, feedback and seriously cryptic personal content. one of our first releases with strong lyrical focus, alex knocks it out of the park with his synthetic voice resonating like a wasted robert ashley on ambien. the tracks rage with a one man "twin infinitives" style, with guitar riffs so fucked that they make neil haggerty sound like les paul. damaged, random, syn-drum triggers and ms-10 crackling go fully ballistic over dark and personal narratives. despite the chaotic nature of the music, there is a defined and cohesive song structure to each track which makes everything more confusing but also highly enjoyable to listen to.

if you miss bands like shadow ring and royal trux, but wonder where the logical next step would be in their absence: step in this direction - we promise you'll be pleased.

release date 15.05.2012

in 2010 rachel evans released "seeping through the veil of the unconscious", an expansive, magic trick of a cassette which captivated an unsuspecting american cassette underground and made dedicated fans instantly. digitalis released fine editions of the "seeping..." as well as the acclaimed follow-up "luminaries and synastries" on lp which packed an equally potent punch. since then much anticipation has been created from her work with husband grant evans, including a split lp on aguirre records in late 2011 and various releases as duo quiet evenings

evans has since been hard at work on an expansive, definitive 2xlp project, carefully arranging sounds to create immense, alchemical side-long tracks which push the boundaries of the project into new territory. these incredible new highs are documented in a clear, spacious fidelity where cerebral sounds gently flow and wash through the stereo field creating a beautiful deep listening situation. big changes in sound and scope are evident; a shift from the murky, mysterious haze of the older recordings into a highly addictive concentrate of airy tones and gem-like glow, each track forming a universal sky-map . there is, however, no loss of mystique. one of evans most charming elements is her ability to create a divine magnetism, and to capture this very magic unfiltered, raw and uncomprimised. very few have the capability to create this powerful energy and make is as accessible as evans does.

this full-length definitive album is a high water mark in the motion sickness of time travel discography. an album masterfully crafted with ambition, crystal clear vision and dedicated focus. mastered for vinyl by lawrence english and cut for vinyl at dubplates and mastering.

lp

"animal husbandry" is the result of absolute, genuine obsession: a devotional masterwork with song craft, exquisite production and aesthetics regarding the ultra-damaged times we live in all in perfect harmony. burrowed away in private studio sessions over the course of a year, human teenager have emerged with a profound and colorful masterpiece.

like chrome before them, the effects of a carbon copy community of lemming rock groups were avoided and ignored, and the vision of creating a pure, singular work was achieved. rarely does an album with complex structure and abstract tendencies sound so organically catchy as this. the duo spawn a brand new sound that ranges somewhere between ilitch's "10 suicides" to the work of the cleaners from venus. to be clear, however, it would be impossible to plaster genre descriptors onto an album with such enormous scope. terms like "synth-pop", "rock and roll", "punk", et cetera, can all be applied on a surface level, but at the end of the day it's none of and all of these things at the same time, more or less. few projects are able to create and exist in a personal universe that hits the nail right on the head the way "animal husbandry" does. from "fourth reich," the albums opening cut, it's very apparent that human teenager have created an album that will not be able to stop listening to with its wildly morphing vocals, strafing synthesizer arrangements, and prismatic guitar detail.

police, the new world order, youtube, new york; it's all a drag, and human teenager captures the horrors of everyday life in "the future" and holds them hostage. spectrum spools is very pleased to present you with an instant classic.

release date 20.03.2012

we are beyond excited to present you with the highly anticipated vinyl debut of the head boggle project. the world has been waiting for this day to come, and finally a full-length long player has arrived.

recorded at his apartment studio, "headboggle" is the manifestation of derek gedalecia's acoustic / electronic research utilizing the "kitchen sink" in every sense of the idiom: moogs, harmonica, banjo, harpsichord, irish harp, ems synthi, violin, drums, clavinet, serge modular, field recordings and more! what makes "headboggle" so special is the careful arrangement of sound, with painstaking attention to composition and sound direction. disorienting magic is a key trait of the head boggle sound, one which captivates and commands repeated inspection. like any great focused album effort, there is a narrative arc - from the introductory "flourescent star" with it's dizzying, fractured crackle and bizarre piano float to the tension packed, information-overloaded squabble and squawks of the "dream diary" and "europa astrobiology lander" tracks. "headboggle" is a dedicated and devotional effort - one with precision and prodigious vision.

equal parts françois bayle and tod dockstader in the best possible way, it's still hard to pin such a multifaceted talent to any kind of descriptor. derek has been honing his sound for years with loads of releases on almost every essential tape and cd-r label out there. here we have his finest set of compositions yet in hi-fidelity, tight and tediously packed, forming his most concise release to date. the head boggle debut has raised the bar for classical electronic composition with the greats, a feat of rare occurrence.

lp

here at spectrum spools, one of the many missions is to make sure great, under-documented, and limited offerings get a chance to see a wider release. no ufo's debut cassette,"soft coast" (2010, nice up int'l), is surely no exception. it was said about the swell maps "a trip to marineville" that the album had been obviously crafted by true music lovers who were record collectors. it seems that konrad jandavs' debut as no ufo's was calculated and carefully pieced together to spawn a whole new universe from the omniverse of collective musics, a feat which many attempt but few succeed. lazy comparisons to neu! and other such kraut-oriented material have bubbled up here and there, but jandavs' vision, as with any great recording artist, is all his own; a new perspective from looking at musics past and present.

"soft coast" began jandavs' short, yet potent string of collaged "cosmic trash" which gripped the underground tape scene. since he's just seen the drop of his new "mind controls the flood" ep on public information and has future releases planned, it seems wrong to let this one slip thru the cracks any longer. a killer debut out of the blue, more than deserving of wider recognition, now available on vinyl.

release date 14.02.2012

"flux" is the 1981 debut solo outing of robert turman, an american multi-instrumentalist and avant-garde composer. until recently, turman was perhaps best known for his contributions to the ballistic non project with boyd rice, as well as other obscured u.s. industrial acts such as z.o. voider.

in the summer of 1981 turman decided he would take a drastic turn from the noisy / electronic / industrial work of his compatriots, and began work on what is now the classic "flux" cassette. "flux" was originally self-released in extremely limited numbers. weary of the noisescapes of old, he set out to create long-form minimalism utilizing kalimba, piano, "mini-pops jr." drum machine, and tape loops to create a complex bed of interweaving micro-stasis. the results of these new experiments were as beautiful as they were perplexing.

a curious dusty fidelity carries these classic tracks across four sides of vinyl, including all of the original "flux" content. these compositions glow with a sprawling, slow motion haze that's light years ahead of its time. "flux" reveals wide spectrums of sound from melancholic kalimba and percussion patterns to slowed down, syrupy exotica. turman had complex ideas in his mind yet only the simple technologies of the day were at hand. hear the click of the stopping and starting tascam 3340 open-reel tape machine as one hand presses the "record" and "play" buttons and the other plays piano phrases. while there are similarities in style to classical minimalism, turman's sound and vision is his own and is exclusive to his limited discography.

released in a limited edition 2xlp set, lovingly remastered and cut by rashad becker at dubplates and mastering from the original c-60 cassette master.

whatever rise to the synthesizer came later on in the 00's is hardly of any concern to greh holger and his hive mind project. having released private press cassettes of solo synth works as far back as 2002, hive mind exists as enigmatic in world of new-jack synthheads and the tidal wave of neo kosmische that goes with it by flying far under it’s radar.

the silence is now broken and here we are treated to some of the most unique sounds spectrum spools has yet presented. no blisscapes to be found here. no soaring latched arpeggios, no cosmic vistas. not a single melody. this is two sides of ancestral ruin in its clearest and most focused presentation. the brutality of the earth and the harsh reality of all that it holds. unknowable sounds - that of the dawn of the earth, or perhaps the sound of its demise. a toxic swamp of chemicals and mutated organisms left behind long after man has wiped himself away for good. field recordings from the end of the world.

while others are racing for the stars, hive mind’s tectonic plate shifting and brutal rumble will give you a brand new way to look at modern synthesizer composition. with a focus on textural sounds and shifting frequency registers, this album gives the listener the a full range of listening possibilities with infinite replay value.

it’s worth noting that spectrum spools as a label would not exist without hive mind. an inspiration and a pioneer in the modern u.s. synthesizer circuit, it’s with pleasure and honor to release elemental disgrace into the world.

october 2011 release ; daren (ho) ‘s been on a tear over the past few months since relocating to brooklyn from iowa ... this set was available for a blip as a root strata tape, but works wonderfully here on vinyl as a series of short, “library” -style electronic miniatures that utilize synths, yes, but also some light piano drippings & tonnes of rhythmic white-noise punctuations that nestle things somewhere between “program music” & a kind of industrial collage ... super ace & one of the best things he’s done ...

june 2011 release ; ... at long last, a proper (readily available !!! for more than a few days!!!) album from jean logarin’s temporal marauder ...

working here with associates hans schule, max tanguy, and llissa zuckovich, logarin’s bisection of contemporary & “klassischepsychedelic electronic music tropes goes way beyond mere emulation / re-creation, yielding a truly new hybrid of both that leans heavily on latter-day gear / tech / solutions while doing a bang-up job of channeling the built-up splendor of the best 70’s euro-library gold (i’m thinking cecil leuter’s “pop electronique”, but also the boneschia new sensation in sound” series, & the greater work of roger roger, nino nardini, zanagoria, h. tical, and the like) ... all while retaining the “half-groovy, half-bonkers synth freakoutspec of said ...

words cannot express just how ... perfect this whole record is, especially given current trends in otherwise mono-influenced, backwards-looking retro electronic music ; consider this the high bar raised for other intrepid travelers to aspire to ... comes in a glorious tech-pastiche sleeve c/o the incomparable jeremyghost icekannapell that’s perfectly apropos of the organized chaos within ; highly recommended !!!

temporal marauder makes you feel
lp

if jean logarin did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him. never mind your outsider composers; never mind your library music. never mind your merely unreleased records. jean logarin's music, like some recent unearthings by belgium's ultra eczema label, exists at a remove from publicity so complete that it was nearly not among us, and has never been before. like any obscurity, its immediate appeal might be that this music could count as a more genuine artifact of its time than any more commercial product, by virtue in part of its being outside of history. jean logarin's music is definitely outside of history, but it is no artifact.

it is so deeply consonant with the best contemporary electronic music that it is hard to believe it isn't brand new. but the biographical details, however elusive of our usual channels of verification, speak for themselves: logarin studied under andrew rudin during the early 70's; his interest in electronic music further developed while working as a studio assistant for engineer max tanguy, an associate of famed krautrock producer, conny plank. through tanguy, logarin met percussionist hans schule, an eccentric whose shady wealth bankrolled a series of recording sessions at tanguy's studio. together with logarin's then-girlfriend, llissa zuckovich, tanguy, schule and logarin proceeded to compose in the studio several hoursworth of finished pieces whose original purpose and intention have only become cloudier with time. there was no serious attempt made to release it, and only vague talk of attempting to sell it for commercial usage.

the music on makes you feel is, then, from a historical perspective, purely a vanity project. a vanity project within a vanity project, even: none of the pieces were given titles by logarin, and the name temporal marauders does not predate this release. the album was compiled, its presentation determined, by its own first fan. and here is where the story strains credulity, because it requires believing that jean logarin one day met, by chance, accordionist and composer guerino raglani, who even then was uncle to a young joseph raglani, today trafficking in romantic, kraut-tinged electronics under his own name.

two years ago, the elder raglani passed onto his nephew a set of dat transfers of his old tape reels, among which were (what have proven to be the only known) copies of logarin's studio recordings. the younger raglani, so the story goes, flipped out--became "nearly scared," in his own words--and demanded to know more. his uncle shed what light he could on how he came into possession of the tapes (a funny story in itself), but it took an extensive search to find any accessible trail to logarin. while jean and the rest of the erstwhile group were pleasant enough when located, and happy to lend their support to the belated discovery of their work, each was mostly surprised anyone would want to go to the trouble; particularly logarin, who declined the invitation to be involved in the project beyond its approval, and encouraged joseph to come up with the album's names and titles himself.

so, the project became raglani's, and it bears the impression of his own aesthetic stamp, drawing from a range of references he and logarin discovered they had in common. and yet: a "vanity project within a vanity project"? what else is music to begin with? how can it be said to begin with any purpose, and whose is it to name? in any case, this is close to the limit of what can be said about makes you feel. one may search for further information about jean logarin beyond these and a few other bare facts, but only in vain; he does not wish to be known. but to anyone who supposes that music this enjoyable and exciting, however buried, would've already been found by now if it actually existed, i would suggest that it has arrived at just the right time to be heard. and to those who will inevitably question if logarin himself is real, the only straight answer is that we have his music. how could he not be real?

- michael ferrer.

as much of this music has remained elusive , even to the trained scavenger / hardcore fan (such as myself) this set is a real revelation ; giving context to these originally context-free (i.e. “untitled”, for the large part) pieces & framing them as a coherent whole, this set goes further than any other towards the eventual unlock of chrismaster-concept(s) ...

one of my favorite records of the year thusfar & inarguably the best place to start in yourpersonal journey towards “the singularity” ; highly recommended !!!

ps. to show chrisrange & frequent distancing from straight “synth music” tropes, i’ve decided to put up the entirety of the fourth side, heading from sparse temple bell klang into some rather gnarly cracked electronics into a deep pwm rumble, into some garbled telephony, return, fade, then out with a short, quiet, melodic cluster ...

edited and mixed at tranquility base, february 2011.
cut at dubplates & mastering, may 2011

for the last few years, chris madak has been on a tangled and cryptic path toward the full realization of his bee mask alterego. now, for the first time there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel - a chance for old plans to come to fruition and for new ideas to blossom into the unknown. "elegy for beach friday" is a personal selection of highlights from a slew of limited cassette and cdr editions recorded between 2003 and 2010, re-imagined, reedited, and remastered, offering both a cross-section for the uninitiated and a fresh enigma for the already-enchanted.

the original documents will age on the shelves of those fortunate enough to have been in the know, and for the rest of the world, we now have this double lp retrospective of chris' favorite time-stopping microcosmic suites, woven together over four instantly classic sides of wax. here, the full range of bee mask's sonic palette has been carefully compressed into a dazzling and infinitely dense time capsule of mind-altering martian sound fields and psychedelic dimension bending, bridging the worlds of nikola tesla and lamonte young and giving us the ideal soundtrack for our collective walk down a dirt road into the gaseous cloud of our final days.

"house" is the 2nd official full-length offering by cleveland, ohio duo mist featuring sam goldberg (of radio people) and john elliott (emeralds, outer space, imaginary softwoods etc) after 2009's self-titled debut effort on amethyst sunset.

a suite consisting of 7 complex, layered compositions shows new progression in composition and melody from the duo. from the lightning fast, bittersweet crescendo of "twin lanes" to the dramatic chord progressions of "i can still hear your voice", "house" is a certain expansion in execution and construction. tracks like "p.m." put a new take on the long-form mist style with cryptic alien vocoder and humid pad sounds, while "mist house" and "dead occasion" reveal new, complex territories that will most certainly please fans of the previous mist recordings.

... first title i’ve heard from this new aggregate of bright’s mark dwinell, sophie lam, and george bennett ... a synthesizer / drum-machine trio that, in addition to running the schoolhouse venue, works a decidedly forwards-backwards-looking combination of sounds that harken to the berlin school’s natural progression into the early-mid-80’s (the gradual, real-time linn-drum voice-reveal is a glorious thing) ...

... the transition from tape to a d&m cut, euro-pressed lp really shows how meticulously these short, spry numbers were executed & captured ... whereas i was merely impressed by this music on tape, i’m floored by the deep, penetrating filtrations & skittery drum-machine work here, raising this up to the zenith-level of contemporary practitioners of the ages-old clock / trigger-sync approach to real-time live electronic music ...

forma (mark dwinell, sophie lam, & george bennett) emerged on the nyc minimal synth scene in 2010 with a singular vision of cosmic krautrock for a new age.

on their eponymous debut lp, the brooklyn-based electronics trio merges the melodic flow and primitive rhythms of their motorik predecessors with the hypnotic drones of minimalism, creating an intricate work both addicting and rewarding with repeat listens. like many of the lp's eleven tracks, the churning and relentless forma237b draws its energy from a precarious equilibrium between structural rigidity and free improvisation, a dynamic at the heart of forma’s universe.

with lush, distant soundscapes as interludes between these peaks, forma’s inaugural full-length is a harmonious and expansive expression of the enduring power of kosmische musik.

... feel like i was just talking about matt mullane the other day [ed. :: he was !!! his vdsq lp of solo acoustic guitar music just dropped last week ... (who i am i kidding, i don’t have an editor, that was a lie)] ; here he switches gears entirely, dropping an endlessly hi-fi assemblage of melodic electronic patternage that’s both texturally rich and quite satisfying on a personal / emotional level ...

it’s worth noting that the general audio spec here (ultra high-end d&m cut on a thick, euro-pressed lp slab ; so loud i had to actually switch our recording apparatus from line to mic level to grab the sound-sample to your left, no joke !!!) & presentation (high-gloss lp sleeve, with the lp tucked in a very classy polylined black paper sleeve) are of the highest caliber, well in range of justifying the price-tag (i.e. john has fought for and won some considerable production values from the normally tight-fisted peterpitarehberg ... just joshing peter, i know the money flows like fine alsatian spring water from your wallet) ... let’s hope this series keeps going for a while, digging deep into the domestic tape-scene & issuing choice sides in a more apropos format ...

sp 001 / fabric
a sort of radiance lp

cut by rashad becker at dubplates & mastering, berlin, january 2011.

matthew mullane is a chicago multi-instrumentalist performing under the guise of fabric.

here we have a fine suite of compositions which embark on a voyage through darkness of night and the brightness of day. washed out dark colors and static pulses sweep across your stereo painting a portrait of intense yearning and determination. recorded over the course of a year, matthew has constructed a multi dimensional organism of sound that has perplexing depth and astounding detail.

the album reveals new shapes and sizes with repeat listens and is truly a work which you can submerge yourself in to get lost. "leaving the house" is an energetic workout with it's dense, ultraviolet fog and stream-like melodies.

then there's the vignettes such as "orange and red" or "containers", that branch out into unfamiliar territory in their own special ways synthesizing a journey far from home.

so far, fabric releases have appeared in very small editions including a split with sparkling wide pressure and a practically non-existent cassette on fairchild tapes. spectrum spools is proud to kick off the label by presenting the debut fabric album.
