the opener “aghartha” immediately places us in familiar territory as unison slo-mo riff-walls blast us for a good 5 minutes ... but then ensemble begins to rear it’s head ; at first all penderecki-like, then coalescing into a woozy conch-shell pattern under attila’s recitation(s) ... “big church” is a straight-up choral piece, with said buzzsaw guitars offering a rattling foundation under the angelic proceedings ... “hunting & gathering” reminds me of “grimmrobe” era sunn o))), albeit with a nice layering of analogue synths ... and finally “alice” ; were it not for the southern lord catalogue number, i could easily take the striated brass writing & penultimate drone-doom core for something out of the xi / pogus catalogue(s) ...

love that these guys, after a pretty lengthy break there, didn’t just drop “black 2” on us, but instead something much closer to the heart of the matter here @ mms ... beautifully captured long-form sound, taking cues from the 70s/80s west-coast minimalism & modern composition wave & site-specific explorations ... highly recommended !!!

monoliths & dimensions

sunn o))) is proud to present their 7th studio album, after 10 years of existence, entitled monoliths & dimensions. the album showcases the core guitar duo - stephen o’malley and greg anderson - incorporating influences from a plethora of guest musicians, bringing the sunn o))) sound to epic new levels. the band also collaborated with composer eyvind kang (notable for his work with john zorn, marc ribot, bill frisell, etc.) on various acoustic ensembles, in addition to the helios fueled electric guitars and basses. key players on the album include australian guitar genius oren ambarchi, enigmatic hungarian vocalist attila csihar (mayhem, tormentor, etc.) and slow music godfather dylan carlson (earth), as well as julian priester (worked with sun ra in the 50s, john coltrane’s african brass band, and herbie hancock’s sextant band) and new-music horn player stuart dempster. there's also an upright bass trio, french & english horns, harp & flute duo, piano, brass, reed & strings ensembles, and a viennese woman's choir led by persian vocal savant jessika kenney.

the album is not "sunn o))) with strings" or "metal meets orchestra" material. the band took an approach concentrating on more of allusion toward the timbre of feedback and the instruments involved, so the piece is really illusory, beautiful and not entirely linear, stating that the end product is "the most musical piece we’ve done, and also the heaviest, powerful and most abstract set of chords we've laid to tape" the album was recorded and mixed by randall dunn & mell dettmer at various points over the last 2 years. as can be expected the packaging for this album is beautiful and appropriately compliments the audio content. jewel case is sheathed by a velum o-card. expansive 24 page booklet with velum cover and specially coated heavy-weight paper. truly a site to behold!

monoliths & dimensions is practice in density, gravity and momentum.

180 gram deluxe vinyl version of this recent live documentation. in may of 2007 the mighty sunn 0))) embarked on a pacific rim tour that included performances in australia and japan. the lineup for this tour included the core sunn 0))) duo: greg anderson and stephen o'malley plus t.o.s. (moog), oren ambarchi (analog effects and supplemental guitar) and vokillist attila csihar. upon arrival in sydney, sunn 0))) invited one of their favourite black metal artists: striborg over from tasmania to collaborate with them during their show.

this unholy meeting went over very well and the inaugural ritual was a warm up gig at the toft in town club one evening before the larger gig at the hi-fi bar (w/brethren: boris). the results of this collaboration was a completely improvisational, vicious audio and visual assault on the sold out, standing room only audience. this was among the first time that sunn 0))) had worked with live drums and the outcome was completely unprecedented. the whole event was recorded live to 24-track/multi-track. afterwards oren ambarchi edited, sequenced and overhauled the eq to make it as brutal as possible.

i’m into this one ; there’s a seriously great bit of raw, squared-off long-form sound (laced with errant, chirping electronics - listen to the sound-sample) during the second “side” that takes the cake ... but sin nanna’s free-form drumming dots both pieces in fine fashion, and the “in-the-red” fidelity throughout makes for some dense, heavy listening ...

boris - smile cd

some bands are fly-by-night operations, garnering instant fame, critical acclaim and shattering all album sales expectations within their first couple years of operation. you've seen 'em before — they're certainly here today, everyone's darlings tomorrow, and merely relegated to curbside refuse service just before the end of the week.

boris is certainly not one of those spontaneous success stories. though the thunderously heavy and melodic japanese experimental rock outfit has only very recently been introduced to american ears — most notably via its groundbreaking 2006 release, pink — the trio (vocalist/drummer atsuo, vocalist/guitarist wata and vocalist/bassist takeshi) has been steadily grazing its unique sonic turf for well over the past decade. and the release of its latest full-length endeavor, smile, will force the boundaries of boris' already-expansive repertoire — which features nearly a dozen albums — into new extremes.

but before looking at its illustrious present, it's important to understand where boris originated. the group came together in the early '90s as a four-piece, formed simply for the sake of having some fun. each current member had been playing in other acts, and boris was assembled as a way to have the members interact together in a band atmosphere with their former drummer. "we simply wanted to play loud, heavy, extreme and intense music at that time," the band says. "we have had the same feeling now as we did then."

the timing was ripe for an experimental rock band in japan. grunge and noise rock were increasing in popularity, and the music scene in the band's tokyo homebase became borderless, allowing for the free exchange of musical thought and ideas. with influences including the melvins and earth to use as sonic templates, the foundation was set for boris to flourish in the artistry it so immersed itself — and consequently gain the respect from like-minded audiences.

in 1996, boris released its first full-length, absolutego, which would quickly lead to a slew of album releases, including collaborations with japanese experimentalists merzbow and american-based drone metal guitar duo sunn o))). releasing albums with a surprising consistency and frequency would be immensely advantageous to boris in a variety of ways. the multitude of labels across the globe (from ubiquitous u.s.-based indies hydrahead and drag city to japan's daymare, inoxia and diwphalanx) and the abundance of limited releases produced by the band would allow boris to the gain the studio experience it had sought. it also found the band pushing the creative visual envelope with its stunning artwork and packaging, primarily directed by atsuo. furthermore, it affirmed that boris was able to morph and mutate into a variety of related styles and moods. and lastly, it also gave the group the much-deserved recognition it needed to break through into the often-fickle american underground music scene.

after befriending southern lord label chief greg anderson during their first us tour supporting the release of absolutego, boris continued to maintain their contacts with the label, sending their latest wares to anderson and routinely corresponding with him about his involvement in sunn o))). soon thereafter, a relationship had developed, and anderson, after launching his record label, obtained the blessing to release boris albums for north american consumption.

boris' southern lord catalog began with the u.s. release of absolutego in 2000, followed by the bombastic amplifier worship (issued in america for the first time in 2003), and the six-song akuma no uta (issued in america in 2005), which melded several different aspects of the act's vast repertoire into one finite release, and featured novel artwork paying homage to nick drake's bryter layter album cover (a more rare version of this album is known as the "venom version," because its artwork is in tribute to the veteran metal band).

however, one of the highlights of the sunn o))) / boris relationship came to fruition through the recording and subsequent release of the collaborative recording, altar (2006), which spawned from an experience in which boris had also performed without the use of a drummer. the release was significant in that it also featured a number of guest collaborators, including vocalist jesse sykes, soundgarden's kim thayil and former melvins bassist joe preston.

2008 marks another milestone in the boris timeline. it finds the act as a four-piece in live formation, with the addition of guitarist michio kurihara (with whom the band collaborated in 2006 for its rainbow release). and it also finds boris with the release of smile, its latest full-length effort, which melds the buzzsaw guitar and rhythmic drone-like experimentation of the band's back catalog in a fresh, distinctive, song-oriented presentation unlike any of the band's previous releases.

though the genesis of the album might hail from the recording sessions of the band's pink album, boris maintains that they opted to more closely structure the material for smile, a first for the band in composing and arranging the album's content in an attempt to find the meaning and understanding in affirming the composing process. "smile is including various ways of the 'emergence of the song,'" the band says.

one of the most representative themes of the smile album hails from "ka re ha te ta sa ki (no one grieve)," a distortion-drenched, psychedelic rhythmic barnburner. atsuo maintains that with over-extended touring, never-ending recording sessions and the flurry of activity that relates to the band's career, the members of boris often felt exhausted, losing interest in music. however, they continued to relentlessly persist in this expression of themselves. and in the end, the band asks, "how is my face looking like? i really hope that is a smile."

"we should act, and act anyhow," they add. "the starting point is always here. act and act until we feel exhausted. lastly, we think, 'we are done.' we wish our faces could be smile."

eschewing the traditional categorization of music is something which the members of boris have continually prided themselves. "we really want to share the experience, phenomenon, or feeling that we have had and really hope smile is going to be a new experience for everyone beyond music."

a distinctly characteristic transformation noted with the release of smile is takeshi's vocal styling, which is more melodic and captivating than ever before. his seamless delivery, knack for harmonies and consonance drive smile into innovative horizons within the already-extensive boris catalog.

and what keeps boris moving ahead in its various stages of its lengthy career? whether it's referencing "boris," "boris" (undercase or titlecase refers to the group's less mainstream wares) or "boris" (uppercase indicating the trio's more structured material), the band's outlook remains the same — an outlook that revolves around a constant evolution of its approach and form.

"we are always looking for exciting, stimulating and interesting music at the moment and expressing in that way, therefore our style is changing spontaneously and that change becomes its character at that point. interesting experience and incident are way more important than surface style."

earth's latest incarnation has arrived. after refaceting some old gems for greater illumination on "hibernaculum". the band returns once again to it's continuing evolution. where "hex" reveled in dark satanic twang and austere american beauty, "the bees made honey in the lion's skull" finds dylan carlson and the band growing into a harder, more rock, american gospel and impovisitory direction framed by truly psychedelic production and blazing guitar sounds.

earth shows it's affinity with a nod to the best elements of the more adventurous san francisco bands of the late 60's and 70's, and the more spiritually aware and exciting forms of jazz-rock from the same era. this is no nostalgia trip but a thoroughly inspired and original metamorphosis. earth is also very honored to be joined on this record for three songs by legendary and virtuoso guitarist bill frisell (doing some of his most fuzzed out playing in years!) .

bill frisell adds a brilliant texture and counterpoint to the scintillating and inspired riffs of dylan carlson and the band. adrienne davies joins again on drums lending a classic and steady feel to the proceedings. steve moore also returns adding heavy hammond organ and his intense jazz inspired piano playing. live bassist don mcgreevy also makes his full length earth debut on this record.

earth will begin touring throughout the world when the album is released, australia, europe and a full us campaign and on from there. the new songs are equally compelling live where earth takes the vehicles and expand and explore them for further musical and meditative exploration. enjoy "the bees made honey in the lion's skull".

om was formed by al cisneros (bass/vocals) and chris hakius (drums), both founding members of legendary doom pioneers sleep. they recorded their debut album variations on a theme in 2004. the album was an instant success; heralded as a triumphant return by mr. cisneros who had not made any music publicly for many years. the underground popularity of the band lead to exclusive live engagements in london, new york, san francisco and los angeles.

om spent the fall of 2005 recording the album - conference of the birds. comprised of two songs that build on om’s use of cyclical rhythm, riff and vocal intonation, the album blends metal, chant, drone, dub and psychedelia. the band’s lyrics expound upon the structure of the universe, potentiality and freedom from the physical body. engineered by billy anderson (neurosis, melvins) as with the debut album and produced by the band, conference of the birds progressed beyond their debut, variations on a theme with more fully-realized songwriting and production.

pilgrimage:

three new songs featuring om’s unique use of riff, cadence and chant comprise the duo’s new album pilgrimage. lyrical themes address the processes of mind, psychic reality, astral and causal planes of being, and the nature of the soul. pilgrimage was recorded and engineered by steve albini at his electrial audio studios in chicago and produced by the band. mastering was handled by bob weston (also of shellac). motifs that were initiated on the band’s previous album are continued here unabated.

of particular note is how much the song-writing has developed and in turn makes the dynamics of the songs much more intensely powerful. the present journey finds the band expanding their vision into new territories.

in december 2006, orthodox recorded this, their second album "amanecer en puerta oscura". the album helps give a new perspective into the soul of the music they create as well as its movement into several different directions.

"amanecer en puerta oscura" comes off like a trip crossing through different genres,  where jazz influences, collide with progressive sounds and ultra-heavy, crushing metallic-punk experiments.   at the same time the band has not forgotten their true metal roots and andalusian cultural origins. the use of new instrumentation (clarinet, trumpet, contrabass), fits naturally with the band's original sound yet opens a new window in order  to see the light within their dark musical concept.

weedeater - "god luck and good speed" cd

in the mid-1990's, weedeater arose from the ashes of the southern-drug-lord-band buzzov-en, who had disbanded along the swampy shores of the cape fear river in north carolina not too long before. fronted by famed madman and bass virtuoso "dixie" dave collins, this three piece doom juggernaut has been eating audiences alive for more than 10 years now.

after two critically acclaimed full length releases under their belts recorded by billy anderson (neurosis, melvins, high on fire, etc.) and released respectively on berserker and crucial blast records, the latest and highly anticipated album, entitled "god luck and good speed" is due out in july of 2007 on la's southern lord recordings. all but one of the songs on the album were recorded and produced by the legendary steve albini (neurosis, high on fire, nirvana, etc.) at electrical audio studios in chicago.

the sound is gigantic and both the production and recording skillfully capture the intense experience of a weedeater show while achieving tones that will swallow you whole. the remaining track, "alone", was recorded by mike dean (corrosion of conformity) and simply consists of an acoustic bass track, a banjo track, and vocally some of dixie's best somber and sub-baritone rasping. the mastering was executed by john golden (neurosis, melvins, pelican, etc.) and the finished product is nothing short of amazing.

if you want to see weedeater in print, you can catch the boys in thrasher magazine's skater of the year issue in an interview done in the van after a packed show in portland or, and you can read the "stoner rock vs. weed metal" debate between dixie dave and stoner-guru bobby black in the high times magazine harvest issue. aside from the national publications, the boys have also been in the weekly mags gaining national attention for being one of the most moving live bands in recent history, with the proof lying in each of the hundreds of blazing shows they play every year.

at first, fans might not know whether to be afraid of them or worship them, but like with anything held sacred, it always ends up being a combination of both. weedeater has recently toured the us with coc, crowbar, and alabama thunderpussy, as well as sharing the stage with a host of other great bands like clutch, the sword, kylesa, 400 blows, and label mates the hidden hand. in spring 2007 they headlined tours with such bands as stinking lizaveta and rwake in sold-out clubs from nyc to austin. in 2006 they destroyed sxsw at room 710, and then they did it again this year by blowing the roof off of emo's at the tone deaf touring showcase. the front rows were crammed with rock illuminati including members of mastodon and even jello biafra himself, but the club was over capacity so unfortunately many rabid fans were not granted their weedmetal fix at sxsw this year.

needless to say, the future is looking bright for weedeater, and the boys are fondly looking forward to the summer west coast tour with label mates sunn 0))), earth, and wolves in the throneroom, then following with tours of the remaining us and europe later in the year. these will be legendary shows and a great opportunity to pick up your newest hymnal from the reverends of weedmetal.

...don’t let the southern lord catalogue number fool you (actually; the disc was simultaneously released in the uk on touch) - despite oren’s recent doom/black metal transgressions, this music follows on from his earlier experiments with sine-tone guitar throb & extended forms.

utilizing “electric and acoustic guitars, piano, bells, glass harmonica, voice, drums,” oren has meticulously honed these three pieces into “late-night come-down monsters.” veren grigorov’s strings (the only non-oren-performed instrumentation hereon - listen to the sound-clip) add a warmer feel to the proceedings than the earlier, guitar-electronic records.

i make my love of this music known throughout this site, no need to repeat it ad infinitum here... this is a fine, fine record, easily one of the quantifiably best of the year. highly recommended.

by now mr. ambarchi should be no stranger to the initiated drone fiends as his unmistakable tonal presence has permeated many southern lord releases in the last few years.  most notable were his contributions to the "black one" album by sunn 0))) but he is also involved with the 0))) related trios: grave temple, and burial chamber trio.

oren ambarchi continues his otherworldly investigations with “in the pendulum’s embrace”, a kind of dark twin to his landmark 2004 album “grapes from the estate”.  returning again to the hallowed halls of bjb studios in sydney, ambarchi expands the scope and range of his unique musical language, incorporating an even broader pallette of instruments and sensibilities. despite the use of glass harmonica, strings, bells, piano, percussion and guitars, it’s startling that the world created is still unmistakably his own, and that there is such a cohesion of vision throughout the albums’ three lengthy pieces. with this record there’s an even more tenuous coexistence of fragility and density; sounds as light as air mingling with wall shaking low-end.

orakulum was originally composed for a live performance collaboration with the new york sculptor banks violette at the maureen paley gallery in london, june of 06. violette created sculptural representation of sunn o)))’s entire backline in cast resin and salt, including amplifier stacks, instruments, effects & accompaniments. in addition, black laquered stage platforms and sound panels were created as a basis for the groups actual backline setup, and a selection of drawings were presented within the context. the result of this performance and collaboration, which was conducted in a sealed gallery space, was intended to generate a feeling of absence, loss and a phantom of what once was. along with the experiment belülrol pusztít, it is intended as a document of sunn o)))’s interpretation of such said collaboration.

in the late eighties …before the mighty formation of sleep: al cisneros (bass/vocals), chris hakius, and matt pike (guitar) played together (along with thomas choi/guitar) in asbestosdeath. asbestosdeath are the roots of the oak that branched into the massive creation of not only sleep but of course om (al and chris), high on fire (matt) and itisi/operator generator (thomas choi).

asbestosdeath was short-lived and only existed long enough to record 4 songs that were released on 2 separate 7’s. one: “unclean” was self-released by the band, the other: “dejection” was released by profane existence. these recordings are long out of print…buried by time and dust. on the specific request of the band southern lord has been chosen to unearth these recordings and make them available once again!

“unclean, dejection” album contains every asbestosdeath studio recording on one specially priced release. the recordings were carefully mastered from original source material (ie: the vinyl!) by mell dettmer (earth, sunn 0))), altar, etc..)

swedens' abruptum was formed in 1989 by it and all. it had planned to create the band already in 1987 but it wasn't until 1990 that he found the right member to do it. the same year, they recorded their first two demos. there are a multitude of myths surrounding this cult act. among them are:

* midget singer it is a gypsy whos vocal "performances" are achieved by being tortured and electro-cuted by band member all.

* following the completion of their first demo in 1990, bassist: ext was thrown out of the band. according to it, ext was so disturbed by the pure evilness of the demo after hearing the finished product that he joined the nearest church after his departure.

speaking of departures, shortly after the relase the "evil" 7" all began to drink heavily and was forced to leave the band. it then found a new member in (the appropriately named) evil from the young band marduk.

the band further became legendary due to the fact that it was one of the leaders within what was called the satanic black circle. it left the scene completely after several events within the circle and threats to him and his family. abruptum continued on without it, and ultimately ended in 2005.

"abruptum is not in any ways music, something that for reasons i never grasped, i have had to point out time yet time again. “the essence of pure black evil” may be a way to illustrate it, as euronymous (mayhem) formerly put it, but for me these recordings are journals of certain journeys of whatever has been my individual and personal “evil”.

to the mass consumer, facts as “it tortured himself in the studio” or “these are sessions of occult rituals, forbidden mysterious arts recorded” may be ways of selling points, but the sincerely curious mind will unearth that the quintessence of this experience lies in the individual quest one might practice throughout the sinister voids of abruptum.

this is blood, chaos, fornication and various acts beyond where most will ever dare to venture. the only thing truly within my power is to bid you welcome, take a step ahead and plunge yourself into this abyss. keep in mind that you do so at your own peril, we take no responsibility for any actions that may spring from this source of utter obscurity."

(aka: sin-nanna)

"striborg" is the god of winds in slavonic mythology and "sin (nanna)" is a sumerian crescent moon god. all winds and storms are said to be his grandsons ("stribozhivnuci").

striborg unleashes bleak, misanthropic, depressive black metal with, blurry guitars, clean minimal bass and plodding relentlessly pounding rhythms that create a very dark and ghostly atmosphere.

nefaria was recorded in may as the last analogue recording from sin-nanna (aka striborg) and is comprised of 7 tracks/42 minutes of material. the sound is comparable to other striborg works: "spiritual catharsis" with the style progressing even further than the previously released southern lord release: embittered darkness.

overall "nefaria" incorporates all previous styles into one album but with a more organic feel. the nefaria material is combined with the rare 1995 demo: " tragic journey towards the light". this exclusive north american version was licensed from displeased records in the netherlands.

"the resurrection of whiskey foote" is less of a "concept" album but more like snapshots or "episodes" of a larger story. the basic premise that drove the song writing is that early in the history of modern america, there were numerous conflicts or rebellions amongst truly early pioneers, the fledgling colonial governments, native peoples, and those brought here against their will. we devised a character, a fictitious "hero" of sorts, namely whiskey foote who was indeed one of these first "americans" being perhaps the 1st generation son of an indentured servant and an african black or native american person - essentially "mixed" in ethnic or racial origin, a true modern american. he was free, but a part of an expanding frontier that was rife with conflict, many times against a governing system that was on the verge of tyranny as in the case of bacon's rebellion or the whiskey rebellion, etc..."

ok... now here’s where the doom-metal/minimal-drone crossover gets interesting... i didn’t find it odd in the least when oren did a european tour as a member of sunn o))); o’malley and co. had prior gone down to oz for a “what is music?” appearance and must have been bowled over by oren’s solo guitar work during their stay...

what is interesting, however, is how this record; arguably one of oren’s most challenging and minimal works, is being re-marketed to the massive audience for the southern lord/doom-metal spec. frankly, the prospect is pretty damn exciting...

southern lord has done a fine job of repackaging the original idea-label 220gsm/stoughton heavy-stock aqueous gloss sleeve edition into a stoughton cd-gatefold (retaining the original tina frank/inwirements design.) and the music itself, recorded live @ extrapool in 2001, shows oren at the peak of his prowess in coaxing otherwordly, alien tones out of his chopped gibson explorer & moogerfrooger/boomerang pedal-set. nice that the music can be heard for less than the idea lp was fetching (something like $28 new.)

southern lord’s favorite, and most excellent japanese power trio; boris are back with another offering from their eclectic catalog. akuma no uta is a 39 minute, six song album that offers up a variety of styles from past boris albums, drawing from the heavier-than-thou rumble of absolutego and amplifier worship (both previously released on southern lord), to the exquisite beauty of flood, and the sheer jams-out-kickin' of heavy rocks.

starting off with a earth-esque drone-metal intro the record then slams into the riffed-out, noisy stormer "ibitsu". distorted, manic, tear-shit-up stuff. after another song in the same hendrix meets the stooges style psych-punk rawk vein, boris switch gears again, for the album's centerpiece, a twelve-minute opus entitled "naki kyoku" that begins all super languid, quiet and pretty before building into a soaring psychedelic jam. the jams continue on the next track, another in the red garage stompin' blow-out. finally, title track "akuma no uta" winds things up with a return to the immense sludge grind of track one, melded into a headbanging groove, ending the disc on an adrenaline high.

the end of october brings their second full length, “things viral”, via southern lord. “things viral” showcases khanate at their peak. the chemistry of the players has intensified into something otherworldly. with extremely advanced songwriting mixed with the unusual trademark khanate production, khanate has focused their attention on extreme dynamics and the “space between notes” on this album. its difficult to pinpoint reference points when talking about khanate, but if needed:

imagine bon scott-era ac/dc puked through a qualude binge, captured in the studio by steve albini. laugh while you can because afer carefully ingesting this album, chronic depression will set in.

attila csihar biography (w/ assistance from greg anderson)

i started to play music in 1986 when we formed tormentor. tormentor become pretty famous in hungary since we were the most extreme band there at that time. first we recorded a demo in 87 (“the seventh day of doom” ) from our force. we played around 100 gigs in hungary during that period. we split in the end of 1989-90 cause of the hopeless conditions in hungary.. some years later our recordings had become very famous in the underground world thanx to our fans who spread low quality tapes around.. it was cool and a suprise later to hear about the very positive feed backs from many parts of the world but it was too late then.. (“anno domini” the debut album was released only in 95 by nocturnal art productions)

then we formed plasma pool in 1990-91. "plasma pool was influenced by the very old electro “ebm” bands like skinny puppy, front line assembly, leather strip.. as well by the old current 93 stuffs. it was a very big challenge for us to make this kind of music at that time. just think, during that time there were no computers with sampler and studio softwares as today!. we were playing extreme and dark electro music and we become famous in hungary. it was going untill 1993............................. then i was asked by eurnonymous to join mayhem."

eurnoymous, varg vikernes (count grishnack) hellhammer and attila recorded the de mysteriis dom sathanas album. considered by many to be thee best black metal album of all time. the performance of attila on that album is completely groundbreaking, and often imitated. on those recordings, attila simultaneously created a new standard for vocalists, and established himself as thee premier black metal vocalist.

"after shit happened.. mayhem was split as well as plasma pool, both for strange reasons. one was the murder of euronymous (mayhem guitarist), while plasma pool was robbed by the maffia (they took our stuff).. plasma pool also become famous only years after when our first demo was released with some live tracks at a small italian label called “holocaust records” in 95-96.. "

"then i had a break.. between 93-98 i was busy with my family however we had some experimental projects in those years ( n.a.p. , himalaya, ::northpole, ..). in this period i was more into ancient philosophies"

"in 1998 i returned to the extreme metal scene when i was asked to join aborym. first i was just a guest on “kali yuga bizarre” but for the second album (“fire walk with us”) i became the only vocalist since the old vocalist had left the band"

"also in this year i appeared on one track (“from the dark past”) on a mayhem live album called “mediolanum capta est” which was recorded in milano in the same period when i did the guest vocals for the first aborym (this album was censored in some countries). "

"in 1999 i was asked to do a mayhem cover (“funeral fog”) with emperor for a tribute to mayhem album so i went up to norway to do that."

"also in 1999 we recorded a new tormentor album called “recipe ferrum” which was found very strange by many of our older fans. however especially in the last period i had many emails and feedbacks from fans saying that they understood its message and that they started to like it a lot. sometimes the music needs time to find its audience.. "

"in jan. 2000 i was in norway again, invited to the satyricon “roadkill extravagance party” and to meet my friends. that time i went down to meet with the guys from limbonic art and we done that track which also appears on the compilation." ("serpently inspired")

"also in this year we recorded the second aborym “fire walk with us”. it has been said it laid down new standards in industrial black metal. we had problems with our label as they did a very weak promotion (they almost boycotted us !!!) so we had the rightfull attention later only in the end of 2001 thanx to our us distributor: “world war 3/ mercenary music” who actually made the right promotion and thanx to such great magazines like “terrorizer”, “unrestrained”..etc. for the support! (ec we had 10/10 and album of the month almost one year after its release at terrorizer)"

"in summer 2001 i also joined a hungarian band called korog for one album since i had no band here (my hometown) at that time, so it was needed and important for me to practice and rehearse periodically. in the end of this year we have recorded a 4 track demo from which actually there is one track on the compilation. ("worshipping of current")"

“ in 2002 we recorded the 3rd aborym album: “with no human intervention”.

in this year i also did some guest vocals for anaal nathakh ("atavism"), sunn o))) ("decay") and for finnugor (is a hun-finn black metal band). also this year we founded professor fate with mick from anaal nathrakh, its a side thing, more for fun for the future. .... "

"2003: i put together this compilation, played some cool gigs with sunn o))) (including the all tomorrows parties festival curated by autechre) and then i was asked to do a mini 4 track ep of keep of kalessin (with the guys from satyricon)"

“steve and i converged in portland, oregon to record the 4th sunn0))) album (known as "white-1" album). we met up with joe preston (ex-earth, ex-melvins, thrones) and runhild gammelsaeter (thorrs hammer vokillist) at the magnetic park studios (run by our hero rex ritter of fontanelle) in south east portland. with massive help from our friends, we also played our first live gig in over 2 years at the blackbird with all the above mentioned names in tow. the result was monolithic! the studio recording is turning out to be our most eclectic, pro/regressive yet. the highlight for me thus far was witnessing runhild and joe do a vocal-drone mantra duo! also joe programmed some sick and bombastic drum machines to coincide with a all-keyboard track !!! there was enough material recorded for at least 2 seperate albums. march/april 2003 will see the unleashing of the first batch of material. so far confirmed tracks are:

1. my wall (featuring a vocal collaboration with julian cope - w/steve, joe, greg)
2. the gates of ballard (w/greg, rex)”

like the strange packaging on "absolutego" (orange jewel case with bright psychedelic artwork , seemingly resembling a japanese toy), "amplifier worship" goes completely over the top with the most fucked up packaging ever! we won't ruin the surprise for you, but we will tell you that it involves candy and grotesquely bright colours!!!

early (1996/1997) boris album, remastered, reissued. what was originally a one-hour-plus single monolithic block has now been augmented by a comparitively sprightly romp (only 7 minutes plus).

boris are currently one of my favorite practising groups, this status attained through their relentless invention, chameleonic morphing from record to record... first crusher/bruiser riff-rock, then low-end feedback drones, then progressive freaknikery, often within the same album. they’ve done collaborative records with keiji haino and merzbow, although they’ve come into their own over the past fews years after associations with groups like earth and sunn o))) made them a household name (albeit, households dabbling in the black arts, with a copy of anton lavey’s satanic bible in the bathroom magazine rack).

finally, a release from this cult japanese band is available outside of their native country!!! after several impossible to find japan-only releases, the darkest hour of their entire body of recorded material is finally available worldwide! a one hour song with a bonus track "dronedevil 2" has been added to this newly remastered version.

after touring the us in 1996 with the thrones (joe preston/earth-melvins fame), boris retreated to their homeland to lay down this punishing, cult masterpiece. it must be noted that absolutego was recorded and released (in japan) before sleep recorded jerusalem!!! this is not to discredit or belittle those godz, but to shed light on the fact that boris is indeed the real deal.

like sleep, boris was ultimately inspired by the melvins (in particular the lysol album) and earth. besides pure heavy riff-droning bombast, boris adds a unique experimentalist ambience to all they touch. this perfectly explains their involvement and collaboration with such cult-experimental artists such as merzbow and keiji haino. every release from this group is different. each is colossal in it's own right, but absolutego is the group's finest achievement. words do not describe this mammoth accomplishment. earth moving drones swallow the listener whole, then regurgitate you as a mass of sloth like jelly.

formation:
after the breakup of the cult doom/death band thorr's hammer in 1995, stephen o'malley, greg anderson and jamie sykes formed burning witch. the band then added g. stuart dahlquist and vocalist edgy 59, rounding out their lineup. anderson left the band and moved to los angeles to form the band goatsnake. in 1996, the band (w/out anderson) recorded songs with steve albini, which would become the towers... ep. this collection would actually not see a formal release on 12" until 1998 on slap a ham records. after the sessions for these songs, sykes left the band and was replaced by b.r.a.d.

the sessions that followed the albini recordings resulted in the rift.canyon.dreams ep, which would prove to be the final recordings by the band, as they broke up soon after the disc was completed. it was released on 12" by merciless records.

disintegration:
shortly after disbanding: " crippled lucifer" a compilation cd of the two eps, was released in 1998 by the then new label southern lord records. it was the second release of the label, the first being thorrs' hammer. burning witch briefly reformed for their last shows in the fall of 1998 after which edgy 59 left the band. o'malley reunited with anderson to form sunn o))), and dahlquist joined both in sunn 0))) for their first two albums (the grimm robe demos øø void) then briefly joined anderson in goatsnake for the "flower of disease" album. currently, o'malley is in various projects including sunn o))), and ktl. dahlquist and b.r.a.d are in asva.

the unholy birth of a genre....
the sound, attitude and execution of burning witch is very slow,painful, and heavy. while the band was unabashed about their influences they effectively used these influences to create something unique for the time. ultra-heavy, dark minimalist riffs, bombastic bass, and plodding war drums collided with vocals which alter between a nasal, melodic singing voice to a brutal, tortured demented scream/shriek. burning witch were truly the first band to incorporate the dark atmosphere of black metal with tortured doom-metal. their influence is worn on the sleeves of many bands these days including: graves at sea, goatsblood, middian (yob), isis.

this deluxe double cd re-issue of all burning witch recordings will serve as a respectful epitaph for this incredible band. it compiles both the towers and rift canyon dreams albums which were on the the original crippled lucifer release plus the following out of print material:

"communion" and "the bleeder" from split cd with goatsnake (hydra head records 2000) out of print and "rift canyon dreams" from split 12" with asva (dos fatales records 2004) out of print (remixed by randall dunn (sunn, boris, earth) and available for the first time ever on cd)
