| late 2005 release from sunn o))) with added members / mms perennials oren ambarchi and john wiese not just fleshing out the ranks, but adding so much to the overall direction the band is taking these days (check out the sample of “bathory erzsébet”... metal? hardly...) this is the first in what i hope are a series of “black” records (”black metal” i assume; the signifiers are certainly there; ultra lo-fi in spots, trebly guitars, distorted vocal gasping...) in my mind this is their penultimate release, featuring a killer solo-oren opening gambit (”sin nanna”), followed by perhaps the band’s most ohr-wurm-ish number (i kid you knot; i had the riff from “it took the night to believe” in my head for a few days straight...)
several years on (but, honestly, not that many) in my doom-appreciation phase, these guys are still the titans packing just so much avant-whatever whallop in w/the metal-vocabulary oomph of loud, repetitively monolithery. highly recommended. |

“black one is the sixth and darkest sunn0))) album yet featuring very special guests oren ambarchi, wrest (leviathan/lurker of chalice/ twilight) malefic (xasthur, twilight) and john weise (bastard noise). a showing of progressive yet primitive pure subsonic power committed to tape. tonal magma explosions created under the influence of utter blackest atmospheres, sunn0))) |endlessly seeks to push boundaries and demolish pre-conceived ideas of their emminence.
with their previous two albums, white1 and white2, sunn0))) explored deep dynamics, ambience, and introduced different instrumentation to their recordings: vocals (performed by julian cope on white1 and attila csihar/ mayhem on white2), percussion (performed by joe preston on white1) and sub-sonic keyboards (performed by rex ritter/ jessamine-fontanelle).
black one continues this collaborative tradition in a rather down direction. sinister vocal performances courtesy of wrest (known for his solo work under the names leviathan and lurker of chalice) and malefic (known for his solo work under the name xasthur) literally call from beyond the grave. unorthodox and experimental recording methods were use |
