three extended “armchair ethnomusicology” studies from pelt members mike gangloff and mikel dimmick, with cenotaph boss john w. fail; each contribute a wealth of stasis-heavy droning acoustic string timbres - surreal cosmic emanations; definitely something you’ll want to soak in...

spiral joy band with john w. fail

mikel gangloff: esraj, fiddle
john w. fail: israj
mikel dimmick: flute, bowls, sruti & electronics

the spiral joy band was formed in 2001 as a hook up between pelt members mikel dimmick and mike gangloff, and karl precoda (last days of may, the dream syndicate). until now they have privileged live performances over recorded works, and these performances have typically featured extended drone works for acoustic instruments much like pelt's recent work on "(untitled)" and "pearls from the river".

instruments used and abused include tibetan prayer bowls, gongs, sruti box, esraj, tanpura, shenai, and tongue drum, as well as a range of more conventional western paraphernalia.

on "pores in the porch and puddles beneath", dimmick and gangloff are joined by glasgow-based american expatriate john w. fail for three lenghty excursions into dynamic drone structures, with thick layers of violin, esraj and sruti box interspersed with occasional punctuations on prayer bowl and electronics.

the opener, "elegy for wooden ladders", is the most dissonant piece of the three, with apparently random flashes of esraj and violin which gradually evolve and interlock, bringing the track to an agitated outcome. "down from the skies" clocks in at almost 40 minutes, and is a perfect combination of the twin guidelines of spiral joy band's music: a long hillbilly fiddle intro by gangloff is gradually overridden by dissonant drones from dimmick and fail on electronics, prayer bowl and esraj, until the americana elements that originated the track are all but submerged in a wave of asian-sounding drone and clattering esraj, with a majestic sruti box drone-chord rounding off the track. the final track, "impercetible, unwavering" is the most static of the three, a thick sruti box drone supporting the strings, who constantly go in and out of phase with each other; about a minute from the end, the drone bedrock is suddenly removed, leaving only the throbbing strings, which eventually fall into silence.

late 2005 release (a professionally replicated compact disc) featuring the stooges’ steve mackay , along with members of the radon and soopa collectives. all-over-the-map meld of free jazz, electronics (kind of a mutated idm actually) , and noise. intricate and actually pretty appealing (considering that this could have easily wandered into “zorn” territory...)

united scum soundclash

"united scum soundclash" is the outcome of a collaboration between the soopa and radon labels, and stands as a landmark in the history of both organizations.

for soopa (a label and collective based in porto, portugal, bringing together a variety of bands and musicians), this is the first venture into the field of album releases; for radon (founded in the usa, but now spreading across europe through their radon uropa subsidiary), this record marks the confirmation of their recent links with portugal.

the production of "united scum soundclash" began in the spring of 2004, when soopa members jonathan "cactus" juliel, miguel autoblack and filipe the banshee met radon's scott nydegger, leading to the idea of a collaborative album.

the music on "united scum soundclash" is the result of several hours of improvised sessions, which were then painstakingly sculpted into separate tracks through editing and processing by jonathan "cactus".

two guest musicians appear on three of the album's tracks: sax player steve mackay (stooges, violent femmes) appears on one track, and czech musician kamil kruta (a collaborator of the residents and lydia lunch, among others) sings on a further two.

since an album's title is usually a statement of intent, let's look further into the multiple meanings of "united scum soundclash". "soundclash" comes from the dub and reggae cultures and implies a sonic battle between two entities; however, the competitive nature of the original soundclashes is diluted by the word "united", hinting at the collaborative nature of this release. as for "scum", this refers to the way the original recordings were torn apart and regurgitated, becoming a kind of sonic scum.

as for the music... well, music is always hard to describe. "united scum soundclash" contains elements of free-jazz, electro acoustic music, noise, breakcore and electronica, but it isn't just a patchwork of styles; it is a unified whole.

co-released by soopa/radon studio, 2005.

wolf eyessix arms and sucks |live in porto|” compact disc recordable

occasionally someone will write, offering a wolf eyes thing in an edition of 20 or whatever and i always bite and order like 75 because fuck that whole exclusionist / planned obsolescence / resultant ebay aftermarket thing; micro releases are only good & fair when they sate all possible / interested parties (i.e. people shouldn’t have to bend over backwards and resort to guerilla tactics to acquire the music and support the bands they love...)

...which makes what luis has done here quite remarkable: he did a wolf eyes thing in a small edition, then, when it sold out in like 2 hours, he re-pressed it. i know that doesn’t seem like such a vanguard move, but in this day & age it is ...and i’m glad because there aren’t many decent-fidelity board-recorded documents of w.e. shows that aren’t filtered through the gunk-bank/micro-cassette of the group. not to mention that there aren’t that many wolf eyes things that filter their sensibility, graphically speaking, through the mind of another; making the beautiful wood-cut-collage sleeve-art of mr. soopa that adorns the textured kraft-stock gatefold cd-sleeve so striking (esp. the three bearded warriors pictured in the gatefold...)

the first track’s got some great anti-uk olson/connelly comedy-banter before slipping into an excellent 30-minute minimal/rising improv of scraping metal and fizzing electronics that, in spots, is on par with the recorded output of such “classic” live-electronic spell-casters as david tudor, m.e.v., gruppo nuova consonanza, etc... not exactly the deep-vein throb we’ve come to expect from the connely/young/olson line-up. this gives way to the “medley” of wolf eyes “hits” (‘stabbed in the face’, etc...) that makes up the last 15-odd minutes...

considering all things this is a pretty damn unique entry into their discography-grimoire. i have a ton of copies, so no rush to get this into your stronghold/outbox... it’ll be around and available from mms to any & all takers for quite a while...

wolf eyes
six arms and sucks
|live in porto|

recorded live in porto this release shows a different side of wolf eyes. clearly uncomfortable for playing to a sitted audience, the band throws an unsetting 30 minutes long improvised track ranging from quiet moments – where scrapped metal, electronics and horns melt – to the most explosive harsh noise and guttural vocals.

but this was not the end. without warning, wolf eyes start a 2 songs medley. both well know for the wolf’s concert goers. minimal beats, distorted guitars, cracked-up electronics and noisy vocals fill the remaining 20 minutes.

this edition comes in a gatefold cardboard sleeve with silkscreened original art designed by soopa

limited to 200 copies.
