april 2008 release ; new music from jo zimmerman, still (thank god) up to his old tricks ...
sonig press release...
schlammpeitziger
schwingstelle für rauschabzug
format: lp | catalogue: sonig 68lp | year: 2008

ever since the release of his first cassette on the renowned and legendary cologne-based label entenpfuhl in 1993, jo zimmermann aka schlammpeitziger grants an international audience insights into his private cosmos. the musician, graphic artist and tireless inventor of increasingly strange song titles with a ribald as well as subtle humour has been coining a highly distinctive style for these last 15 years. on his new album he demonstrates how to combine artistic development and remaining true to oneselves' style.

on "schwingstelle für rauschabzug", schlammpeitziger discovers deep frequencies and pulsating beats. and all of a sudden, his tried and tested combination of eloquent melodies (which more often than not seem to lead a life of their own) and lively rhythms acquires a completely new pull. with this album, jo zimmermann pulses his listeners (and surely himself) into hypnosis. this new quality transforms schlammpeitziger's music in a remarkable way: it remains friendly and weird, but gains in seriousness and depth. and in physicalness. where we used to nod with our heads we are now inclined to exercise our pelvic floor. beneath all those subsonic donnybrook basslines and the synthlines which stimulate our laugh muscles, each track has a second and a third level to be discovered. it’s always a joy to realize how cunningly jo zimmermann palms his musical depth off on us. this kind of club-suitable pop music (or radio friendly club music?) possesses hidden qualities which readily disclose themselves on a second or third listening. and all of a sudden, one is confronted which a wholly new piece of music. this musical "double entendre" was already hinted at on the last album "everything without all inclusive" (sonig 32cd/lp). now it has become schlammpeitziger's new musical trademark. still, each track is capable of telling long and complex stories (which are often triggered by their titles). still, the listener is caught up in a net of intricately woven melodic lines. and we still love to dive deep into the depths of schlammpeitziger’s three dimensional sound vaults and his sturdy beats.

"schwingstelle für rauschabzug" is mixed by andi toma (mouse on mars / von südenfed) at st. martin tonstudio, düsseldorf.

the lp is limited to 300x copies.

september 2008 release ; long-awaited collection of excerpts deom jan “lithops” werner’s long-running “noise room” project, first installed at steim in 2005, then later at melkweg and london’s cubitt gallery ...

really great, standout work from just about everyone involved ; a certain cluster-fuck production-set prevails (which is naturally what you get after mixing busy 5.1 pieces down to stereo !!!) but not so much as to hinder the proceedings overall ... it’s a testament to jan’s curatorial skill in just how wide-ranging the results are here, while keeping an almost imperceivable common-bond running throughout (many of the submissions / contributors stick to the time-tested basics ; squiggly, digitally transmogrified live-instrument tones & spastic, near a-rhythmic underpinnings) ...

ps. this is about as close as you’re going to get to new hrvatskimusik from me for a while ; the piece excerpted herein is in fact the “young person’s guide to hrvatski” ; consisting of 6 channels of automatic beat-sensing rearrangement algorithms going to town on the pre-”irrevocably overdriven” beat freakout megamix run through a guitar-amp simulator ... listen to the sound-sample for a taste ...

noise room
format: cd | catalogue: sonig 66cd | year: 2008

the noise room cd documents the noise room, an autonomous surround sound space built for pre-recorded musical works and sonic experiments. each musical work which is performed in the noise room has been selected, edited and arranged for a listening situation in which the listeners can dedicate themselves to a maximum listening experience. the pieces presented in the noise room refer specifically to the concept of a so-called 'speaker' concert in contrast to a so-called 'live' concert. each composition is played back through a multi-channel 5.1 speaker setup that is configured according to the spatial acoustics of the noise room. the cd version offfers a selection of shortened stereo edits. noise room 1 was built and set up at steim, center for research & development of instruments & tools for performers in the electronic performance arts in amsterdam in 2005, version 2 was located at the melkweg concert space in amsterdam in 2006. version 3 will be installed in the cubitt gallery in london in september 2008. the noise room was initiated and designed by jan st. werner, former artistic director of steim and member of mouse on mars.

"going to a tape music concert characterized by a lack of performance can be a valuable experience in itself: a situation where one is presented with a high fidelity sound installation in which one can finally hear the subtle details of the music. it is this situation that defines the need for the noise room. at the same time, it builds upon in the history of acousmatic music -- a history of using space for sound compositions -- while referring to the transgression of boundaries and the utopian inspiration of the avant-garde." roland spekle

c-schulz & f.x.randomiz
das ohr am gleis
format: dualdisc | catalogue: sonig 64dd | year: 2007

double sided disc - one side stereo audio cd other side dvd with audio only content in dlt & dolby 5.1 surround sound. electro-acoustic composition based on train sounds. great high end listening experience by and first collaborative release by cologne composers randomiz & schulz. f.x.randomiz first release since 2000 !

on “das ohr am gleis(“the ear on the track”), cologne-based musicians c-schulz and f.x.randomiz explore the soundworld of contemporary railway traffic. the project sonifies traveling and spatiality as well as rest- and homelessness. it also proves how the sounds we are constantly surrounded by can be emotionally and historically charged. cologne’s railway intersection was the starting point of an expedition which led both artists as far as the russian city of murmansk (located on the arctic ocean). along the way they encountered signal boxes, gates, concourses, freight depots, repair halls and tunnels.

das ohr am gleis” is a pioneering work in more than one sense. on the one hand, traveling by train has been translated into a composition through the use of field recordings. on the other hand, this work is being released in the relatively new “dualdisk”-format, a double-sided cd, which enables the audience to choose between listening in either a 5.1 surround- or a stereo-mix, thus realizing the full potential and sonic scope of the work.

the sounds of modern ice-railcars, russian diesel engines and historic trains have been transformed into hybrid soundsculptures in the studio. these have been augmented with (and contrasted by) sounds from “ordinary” instruments. the view from the train window with its discontinuous, rapidly changing impressions has been translated into soundfragments which are flaring past. an undertaking such as this could have easily resulted in erratic, arbitrary and therefore banal “soundscaping”. but c-schulz and f.x.randomiz have managed to avoid this trap - “das ohr am gleis” is by no means an ambient layer cake. on the contrary, it is a composition, which demands the same kind of focused listening as the so called “serious music” of the last century. at the same time, this music is full of allusions to pop, film music, new music and psychedelic (without ever resorting to clichés of course).

"das ohr am gleis" employs effects of distance, it lets high speed trains roar through the meditative silence of abandoned tracks, while the screeching of brakes builds up to a menacing moloch. the clattering of the crossties generates an artificial, trancelike rhythm, and the singing of the rails and the catenaries metamorphoses into fleeting melodies embedded in a hazy, drifty soundscape. during listening, one is overcome by a longing to be faraway in a way one would never experience in the gate of an airport. it is a yearning, a longing to be off to somewhere else which is hard to put into words.

"das ohr am gleis" is an intense noise music which is enticingly unworldly and concrete. it can be listened to as music or as a radio play. incidental sounds densify into tracks; for a brief spell they are resonant with meaning only to disintegrate into mere sounds soon after. listening to this music in a casual way is an almost inconceivable act. to ignore it is utterly impossible.

filmmaker, dj and singular maverick of electro-acoustic music c-schulz also composes for the renowned “studio akustische kunst” of the west german broadcasting service (wdr). the musician, composer and radio play producer f.x.randomiz has the reputation of being the guru of digital sound processing and editing since the 1990s.

well i’ll be ...

jan must have listened to all of my rants regarding the lithops singles on eat raw, static caravan, and robot (yes, the same robot that releases all of the organum records...) as here we have a nice disc collecting all of his solo singles-output from the past 7-odd years...

seriously: the warm fuzz-gloss blast that is blasmusik probably ranks as my single-favorite solo-jan outing. it’s just so unlike any other piece of music out there, electronic or otherwise; something i listen to with frightening regularity... as such i’m very glad it’s finally out on disc where more than the original 500/so people who managed to fine the single can experience it ...

the whole disc is great, ranging from the micro-bounce of the earlier materials (wackler/kahn) to said later electro-acoustic/avant transgressions. recommended.

lithops - queries
sonig cd

since 1997 jan st. werner has additionally published under the alias lithops. the record scrypt, released in 2003, impresses with its non-linear compositional structures and density in organic sound complexity that until the release of scrypt had been hard to find in electronic music. it is a very present physical album that successfully bridges velocity and tranquillity, digital sound synthesis and partly modified, partly tangible instruments. this represents a typical exercise in werner’s oeuvre: the merging of apparently incompatible contrasts.

the new release, queries, seems in comparison almost carelessly light. immediately the first track, “kahn”, carefully opens the door to an album that surprises with subtly bouncing electronica. on queries you’ll find intuitive rhythms with immediate kick, as well as narrative comical bleeps and clonks. this comes as quite a surprise, considering the predecessor scrypt manages almost entirely without beats.

apart from werner’s predilection for contrasting directions, there is a simple explanation for this seeming contrast -- queries collects unpublished material created between 1995 and 1999, as well as three rare vinyl releases from that era, and is therefore, strictly speaking, not really a subsequent release, but more an enlightening review of a time during which individual sounds established themselves as significant elements in compositions, even though they were rooted neither in pop nor in more serious music.

the music on this album moves calmly and relaxed despite its shimmering diversity, and occasionally it is remindful of some kind of electro-acoustic dub. it is particularly delightful to trace the now ten-year old sound aesthetics that sometimes surface in the groovy tangible passages and are as fresh and un-creased as ever. we are happy, and to a certain extent even relieved, to find any sort of music can remain relevant if it is produced with authenticity and an abundance of ideas. after getting really comfortable and cozying up with this electronic entropy, why not dig even deeper into the beautiful harmony of scratching sound layers and subfrequent resonances to finally find a center of sounds beyond all thoughts of style and questions of genre.

yes !!! brilliant comp collecting bits from michel’s 1977 “crackle” lp on fmp with some more contemporary work. the majority of this record was made using a set of instruments designed by michel under the “crackle” banner... the “cracklebox (a hand-held, battery powered feedback/conductivity synthesizer with an incredibly loud built in speaker) being the most well-known. long before the current... hell, even the 80s circuit bending exposé, people like michel and voice crack were “bending” the rules of electrical engineering to come up with some of the most fried pure-electricity sounds imaginable ...
sonig press release...

in tune is waisvisz’s first album since 1978. it is comprised of live recordings made between 1977 and 2000. none of these recodings have lost any of their relevance to the present.

moving to and from between serious and light music, michel waisvisz, director of the steim (studio for electro-instrumental music) in amsterdam, already collaborated with laurie anderson, steve lacy and the san francisco symphony orchestra among others.

his manifold and varied activities are not making it easy for the listener. but all his experiments with self developed sound generators – in which one is always able to discern the outlines of songs and flashes of wonderful harmonies amid all noise which is morphing along – are each in themselves absolutely special and surprising. for years and years, fans have made all possible efforts to realise another release by their master.

"in tune" is a premiere in so far as it is here that one gets to hear waisvisz’s crackle box-sounds, the electroacoustic soundmodulations of the steim-software lisa, his playfully absurd music for theatre and his anarchic arrangements for drums all in one album.

completely underrated set of köln-lineage abstract electronic drone-compositions (albeit sourced to acoustic / electric instrumentation) calling to mind everything from moebius & roedelius’ kluster / harmonia era works to the slowly shifting / mutating late 70s work of françois bayle ...

c-schulz's new solo-outing 5. flicker tunes is on a par with c-schulz & hajsch as far as economy of means and musical depth are concerned. the cologne-based composer grants himself as well as his listeners the luxury of taking one's time to embark on a journey through his "concrete" sounds and expansive sonic planes. this music plays with varying grades of depth - sometimes it feels really close to the body, then again it submerges in the far corner of its musical environment. its listeners are witnesses of three-dimensional effects.

fluttering modulations in diverse tempi play havoc with our inbred patterns of hearing. layers of sound are heaped upon one another meticulously and then moved in the slightest of nuances. thus microtonal shiftings come into being, which now form an enormous soundscape and then weave themselves into the densest of soundtextures. seemingly without effort, c-schulz annuls our concept of time in popmusic, declaring it a conventional burden of which he rids himself as well as his listeners.

the result is that no matter how often you listen to 5. flicker tunes, it will never sound the same, nor will it ever wear out. a magical work, no less.

i have long been enamored with the lps released on hajsch’s “quiet artworks” label in the early 90s... these, in my mind, are the blueprint for the late 90s/contemporary köln experimental music scene (a-musik, entenpfuhl, sieben, mouse on mars, marcus schmickler, etc...) packaged in beautifully austere grey/black sleeves with little information, they gave away nothing and everything simultaneously.

this disc collects the majority of two separate lps on the label, hajsch’s “nagual (für silvio manuel)” (qa 08), and pfn’s “akasa/für cleo” (qa 09, dedicated to the film-maker cleo uebelmann.) these are sublime slices of gradual sound, and should be experienced by any/all follower(s) of said ...

1992
format: cd | catalogue: sonig 24cd | year: 2002

hajsch: guitar, synthesizer, field-recording, bicycle, concrete sounds, melodica, sampler
monika westphal: concrete sounds, field-recording
michael dartsch: violin
charlotte schwab: cello

the combination of experimental-electronic, electro-acoustic and serious music is ideally revealed and realised in hajsch's music. now after a ten year period the compositions released in 1992 on his own label "quiet artworks" can be heard on cd. originally these recording were only available as limited edition vinyl pressings.

a 14-minute 7” of music recorded between 1996 and 2002 by the duo of mouse-on-mars’ jan st. werner and felix ‘f.x.’ randomiz, their previous cd ‘slow’ being painfully unavailable to just about everyone who’s never heard it and would love to ...

transformation 19 mal einfach hergestellter komplizierter musik in 6 mal kompliziert hergestellte einfache musik
format: 7" | catalogue: sonig 23 | year: 2002

new 7" album by jan st.werner & f.x.randomiz; 6 tracks; 14 minutes an unusual remix project: werner produced a cdr with various tracks of sounds and noises he recorded and edited without using any digital tools. he called this selection "16 times easily produced complicated music". randomiz digitalised and re-arranged these sounds and returned them to werner one year later. he called his edits "transformation of 16 times easily produced complicated music into 7 times complicatedly produced easy music"

i went through a great deal of effort in order to acquire the entire discography of the köln-based quiet artworks label. active from the late 80s through the early 90s, qa relelased, imohowiqv, some of the finer sub-conscious listening platters of the era (and beyond). most records consist of side-long tonal drones with just the slightest nuance-shifting imaginable, really quite sublime.

carsten schulz & mr. hajsch (real identity?) were of course the brains behind said braun. and here is the last item they laid claim to (publicly, at least), a beautiful collection of slow-motion studies for diverse instrumentation ...

hajsch: organ, synthesizers, guitars, field-recordings, feedback, window shades, percussion, concrete sounds, melodica, vocoder.
c-schulz: harmonium, accordion, piano, clarinet, window shades, radio, percussion, concrete sounds.

monika westphal: field-recording on 1 and 9, fire on 6.
jeph jerman: field-recording on 5.
daisuke suzuki: field-recording on 4, bricks on 6.
andrä klaukien: window shades on 9.
hein bruehl: recording of voices on 8.

c-schulz and hajsch are no strangers to the international experimental music scene, having spent the last ten years developing "the cologne sound." this their latest recording is one of depth and daring with clearly structured arrangements, clever instrumentation and striking dynamics. in the vein of zoviet france, coil and nurse with wound. acoustic instruments, field recordings, concrete sounds. surprisingly deep music.
