for
maile colbert

an album of graceful crystalline hum by maile colbert, a multi-media artist based in portugal. the music is inspired by experiences of loss, but this is not oppressive or dark music at all. rather, colbert‘s assured tones take inspiration from the process of grieving and emerge as bright, reflective electronic music.

a collaborative track with chubby wolf, aka sound artist dani long, is presented here as a loving tribute after long’s untimely death. pop/opera performance artist klaus nomi is remembered with a piece based on samples of his music. colbert the film-maker dedicates a piece to stan brahkage, acknowledging the pioneering film-maker’s impact on her own visual artwork. elsewhere on for, colbert finds depth in collaboration and partnership with her husband, the sound artist rui costa. using analog and digital synthesizers, field recordings of children in tehran, voices, cello, pipe organ, vlf recordings of space-weather activity in the magnetosphere, hydrophonic recordings and more, for is a moving statement about family, community, and friendship.

this album is for those we have lost, and those we have gained. for respect of the past and its guidance toward the future. for the present, especially for the present, no matter how elusive it may feel at times.

for was created from 2007 to 2010 using electronic and analog instruments and recording techniques, often in collaboration with other artists of various disciplines. each track was triggered by an event of loss and change, and inspired the complexity of these feelings. loss and grief initially overwhelmed me as sad or frightening. however, though a change in perspective, through understanding and acceptance, through opening up and letting go, through the help of those around us to aid and support, and through the act of expression, this album was born. the heavy events, the big events, expressed emotively and brought to a place of delicacy and beauty. such is life, and that is what i hope to be expressed within the work.

whether guided by a score or concept born out of similar thoughts, such as in ice thaw chorus and her light dappled upon, or the posthoumus collaboration always intended with a dear and departed friend such as what petal released, i hope to transcend the dark through creation, collaboration, and dedication to this complex ride we are all sharing.

aaa, the group’s second album (the first, for the boss, was published by beta-lactam ring in 2009) catches the group in a particularly feral mood. far from the polite group-improv snooze perpetrated by folks who hear an amm record and think “hm, yeah i can do that(no you can’t)textile trio unleash their splatter with both the sensitivity of seasoned composer / improvisers and energetic punk abandon. textile trio‘s furious blur lives somewhere between the art / jazz tangle of un drame musical instantanémasayuki takayanagi‘s throat-throttling new directions unit, and the live vinyl-scramble of otomo yoshihide. full of life and humanity, aaa is delirious, dense, direct, and a pleasure to listen to.

early w 5: grauzeit
rlw

songs from under the floorboards is proud to present this gem from the archives of ralf wehowsky, aka rlw, founder of the selektion label (a major inspiration for my starting intransitive) and the legendary german industrial/noise band p16.d4 (a major early and lasting influence on my own music).

grauzeit features a previously unreleased session from october 1980 and two added studio improvisations that would appear in edited form on wer nicht arbeiten will soll auch nicht essen!, p16.d4 s debut cassette album. the band, which includes a young achim scepanski (later to found the mille plateaux and force inc techno labels) on synth, played a strange blend of gray noise, psychedelic improvisation, and industrial dub provocation that still sounds unhinged today.

rlw and his colleagues (friends from school, and a temporarily-out-of-the-hospital mental patient who happened to be in the audience at an early concert) made a dada / jazz / punk racket in stark contrast to the fashionable new wave scenes in berlin and hamburg at the time. they would rapidly evolve into an art collective that would create installations, write and publish books, produce records and cds, and instigate an international network of cassette-trading collaborators at a time when self-publishing on tape was itself a radical political act.

ocean drama
the tobacconists

in april 2009,  scott foust (idea fire company, xx committee, tart, and the swill radio label) was invited to screen his feature length movie here’s to love in europe, as well as staging his the four accomplishments performance.  the trip to europe also gave him the opportunity to join musical hands with frans de waard (beequeen, freiband, shifts, kapotte muziek), who had been on tour with idea fire company in 2005, resulting in the ifco album vital. as both scott and frans are heavy smokers, they settled upon the tobacconists as the name for their collaborative musical venture (ashtray temple was considered, then rejected).

scott and frans got to work in the extrapool studio, composing six pieces using a small keyboard, an echo machine, a radio, some pre-recorded tapes, a laptop, and some contact microphones. then, they took the road to perform in the netherlands, germany, belgium and the uk. at the end of their tour, they spent a week conducting proper studio recordings of all six pieces plus a seventh,  ’the dark secrets of dr. perati’, which was released as a 7 by plinkity plonk / swill radio. the six pieces will be released in 2011 as an lpsmoking is green, by hanson records / swill radio.

one piece from the forthcoming record, ocean drama, was deemed suitable for an extensive rework using the entire principle recording, made by foust on a boat. this extended version of ocean drama, now available as a stand-alone album from songs from under the floorboards, is more spacious, giving room to each individual sound with a great sense of the ‘drama’.  it is the most radiophonic piece that the tobacconists have created so far.

mild disappearances
mike bullock

i have known bassist/video artist/composer mike bullock for about as long as i’ve known anyone outside of my own family, and have always witnessed his restlessly energetic explorations with amazement. the guy just doesn’t sit still! in 1998, he was 1/3 of fetish, a confrontational anti-jazz trio with david gross and tatsuya nakatani that managed to frustrate and alienate just about everyone within earshot. they were one of my favorite bands. after fetish parted ways, bullock embraced absurd theatricality, performing entire concerts where he lifted his contrabass over his head and let it feed back brutally. mike’s duo with vic rawlings resulted in fabulously baffling performances of rewired electronics, unstable feedback, and provocatively awkward pauses. subsequent years saw mike embracing video art, computer music, and large group improvisation as part of the bsc (with rawlingsbhob rainey, greg kelley, and more). like i said, the guy is in constant motion.

mike’s latest work pushes the bass even further to the background, though traces of vibrating strings remain. his new album, mild disappearances, finds bullock wrestling with analog and digital synthesis for five slabs of grimy, subterranean rumble.

floor4 kuwayama kiyoharu & masayoshi urabefrom the abolition port” cdr

edition of 100 copies

a gripping, devastatingly patient, and emotionally raw improvisation for cello, saxophone, and metal chains recorded live at kuwayama kiyoharu’s cavernous warehouse space in nagoya, japan. rather than an event-driven, linear performance, from the abolition port is a single structure, with the ghostly presence of the space acting as either a third performer, or perhaps as the composer. the music is violent in its sparseness; sharp instrumental outbursts push with great effort against a backdrop of blackness as dense and heavy as the sun. from the abolition port suggests a private ritual, or a seance… or perhaps absurd theater, with unseen players circumnavigating a pitch-dark industrial space, sending out desperate distress signals and futilely listening for a response.

alto sax player masayoshi urabe is known for his solo performances, but has worked alongside fellow psych/noise travellers kosoukuya, junko, hiroshi hasegawa (astro, cccc), kan mikami, and chie mukai. kiyoharu kuwayama played cello in the duo kuwayama-kijima, but his primary project is the catastrophe point series, which he records under the name lethe.

april 2010 release ; “studio compositions” from inarguably the greater boston area’s finest modified cello & cassette tape duo, as recorded a few years back by jesse kudler down in jamaica plain ...

having known & having seen these guys individually on the regular for a good decade+, but never having them in this formation, the music here is something of a surprise ; it’s neither vic’s austere minimalism punctuated with high bursts of sine-stone static, nor howie’s relentlessly churning tape-warble ... but in fact a more turn-based music, with each dovetailing through sequences of their respective sounds at a “composerlypace ... very nice stuff, and a great recording (i.e. a blend of the duo’s electronic tones & the actual acoustic presence of their instruments push-button interfaces) ...
songs from under the floorboards press release...

floor3 vic rawlings & howard stelzerby my side; i am your’s” cdr

edition of 100 copies

this oddly punctuated album of studio compositions for modified cello, open-circuit electronics, cassette tapes, and other detritus was retrieved from intransitive’s climate-controlled vaults after carefully aging for more than six years. “by my side” came about at a time when vic rawlings and i were performing lots of duo concerts, and felt that we were pushing ourselves into some strange, exciting territory. we decided to capture what we were doing in a “real studio, rather than simply record concerts in situ as best as we could… which at the time, would probably have meant putting one stereo mic in the room and hoping for the best. two days of improvisations in jesse kudler’s attic studio were sculpted and massaged over several intense days until this album emerged. and then… nothing happened. we’re not sure why. the subject of publishing this album would come up every now and then. every time i listened back to the music, i’d think, “hm, this is pretty weird stuff. i should put it out.” years later, the rapid fluctuations between narrative tease, passages of high-velocity throttle, and grotesque emptiness seem just as fresh and bafflingly exciting to us as they did when we recorded them.

rawlings and stelzer are two members of the large ensemble the bsc, along with their compatriots nmperign, mike bullock, chris cooper (fat worm of error, angst hase pfeffer nase), james coleman, and liz tonne. when he isn’t teaching rock guitar to kids in the suburbs, rawlings builds electronic instruments, makes a mess of a perfectly nice cello, and performs in the groups n.r.a. (with ricardo aria and tatsuya nakatani) and mawja (with mazen kerbaj and mike bullock). stelzer is tired of writing about himself in the third person, so today he won’t do it.

floor2 brumedraft of confusion” cdr

edition of 100 copies

a vital force within the international cassette-culture noise underground of the 1980’s, the formidably prolific french composer christian renou / brume has been honing his furiously fractured outsider-musique-concrete for more than 30 years now. his latest, draft of confusion, is a stereo distillation of a disorienting piece for tapes, bowed cymbals, percolating synthesizer, and mangled voices that was originally presented as a multi-channel installation in portland, or in 2008. the subtly malevolent music starts out as a slowly expanding deep-space drone, churning uneasily and winding back in on itself until the whole thing dissipates into a haze of analog vapor.

dark, brooding feedback drone that envelops a room and shakes it until the walls crack. by turns placid and malevolent, kyle bobby dunn‘s latest album seems to teeter at the edge of an explosion, barely able to contain its unstable electric power. intimate rituals was assembled from the resonance of pipes in dunn‘s brooklyn basement studio, as well as from overheard noise filtered through walls and floors (particularly at no fun festival 2009, with rumbling residue rescued from the bar beneath the stage where noise bands were blasting), and from a mixing desk feeding back on itself. warning: you may want to listen to this on headphones while drifting off to sleep… but trust me, don’t do it.
