| november 2011 release ; ... cassette version of dan lopatin’s eleventh album as oneohtrix point never (not counting the andrew kirschner, slow listener, caboladies & outer space splits, nor the “rifts” nor “memory vague” compilations nor his previous work in astronaut & as dania shapes ... lovely thing, at that ::
... smudgy basalt-chalk imprinting takes me back to the mall tape-wall shops of my youth) ...
anyways, first few tracks dive us directly into the neo-tokyo void(s) that dan does so well, followed immediately by “sleep dealer” ‘s jarring floating-point plunderphonics (a theme strong in dan’s “covert” work as chuck person & kgb man, yet rarely evident in the opn-proper materials) ... my favorite bits involve dan’s expansive acoustic ivory-ticklings (with a great long stretch towards the end of side b simultaneously recalling alice coltrane’s modal transgressions & that really great eliot goldenthal cue from the tail-end of “heat” [seriously, who doesn’t love that piece of music / film] that segues into another plunderphonic étude oddly reminiscent of the books - listen to the sound-sample for that) ...
a great record, easily as appealing as “returnal” while maybe even receding into styles reminiscent of his more formative work ... |

| oneohtrix point never replica
| replica is an electronic song cycle based around audio procured from tv ad compilations. these sample-based meditations are as lyrical as they are ecological, featuring re-purposed “ghost vocals” which serve as narration for lopatin’s signature amorphous, ambient passages. lopatin’s juno-60 is still prominent, but returnal’s placid, synthetic surroundings are accelerated through darker, more unpredictable terrains via lopatin’s use of samplers, analog filtering, tape-op, piano, plate reverb and sub-bass. the result is a heightened sense of music as part and parcel of an overall sonic terrain. |
