ulaan khol ii cd · sab 032

all heavy with warmth & mystery, ulaan khol returns with another round of vertical incantations aimed at the heavens.  as ulaan khol, steven r. smith (hala strana, thuja, mirza) creates dense tapestries that revel in the eternal and infinite.  the bursts of tones & grip on formal structures can compare to the best of hototogisu or handful of dust, though filtered through an ample dose of ash ra tempel.

supreme while discreet, these songs carry a sense of unnerving calm and optimistic gloom, often within a single composition.  swaths of heavy feedback cascade against sinister organ workouts & varied percussion that’s at times pounding, and at others distant.  throughout, smith’s works emerge as vessels of possibility, exploratory rituals of hope.

under the ulaan khol banner, smith has planned a maximalist three-part suite, 'ceremony.' following the cryptic  first installment, ii shines with hazy, rolling atmospheric works that drift and shift with ease. riding a crumbling riff into oblivion, ulaan khol's ii emanates with the gleam of pure white light.

car commercials eric's diary lp · sab 030

car commericals are generally uncomfortable; probably shifty-eyed loners that barely leave the basement. their brand of strictly personal suburban ooze was borne deep within the recesses of new jersey, just east of i-95. more specifically, this music springs from inside that unspeakable zone deep within the mind where feelings get very messy.

david sutton and daniel dimaggio, the duo known as car commercials, make mysterious fake rock clatter for heavy petting (yeah right). following a brief stint as gt performers, daniel and david began to make duo recordings as car commercials a few years ago, releasing their creepy missives in small runs, mostly for sutton's leaf leaf label. the two have tapped into an aspect of nonsensical nihilism that makes jad fair's early recordings so alluring, but have forgone his obsession with cartoon horror and monster movies in favor of faces of death i thru vi.

eric's diary is the second lp release from car commericals, following the out-of-print judy's dust lp (cenotaph) from early 2008. those confounded by judy's dust will be pleased to know that eric's diary is where things get ... intense. breathe deep, and prepare to scratch yr head faster than you can say 'home blitz.'

lp edition of 200 with full color paste-on sleeves.

pumice quo · sab 029

as the title self-effacingly implies, quo proffers a triumphant, primo slice of past pumiceisms: uncertain progressions, anomalous structure, inimitable guitar buzz, sublime melancholy, and distorted vocals (crooned, spoken & moaned). quo once more finds pumice cruising the convergence of pop, folk and noise strains with bona fide inner mystique. sputtering sub-underground skiffle aims for outer zones, diamond cuts of nervous guitar with pesky hooks that sting and tickle tread rough hewn punk turf, pop tangents charm with echoes of kilgour or knox, and woozy synth blurts & drones thread the patchwork patterns with hulk-like grace. with quo, neville's palette has shifted to include traces of useless hardcore, doo wop, and modern loner/lunar blues.

stefan neville, shamblin' on unhinged like a modern day hasil adkins, has been making music as pumice now for most of his life. through a steadily spewed stream of unique diy thud & ooze, mostly created on his insular own, neville has burrowed an incomparable place in the post-everything new zealand landscape, all the while making music that's his.

donovan quinn & the 13th month donovan quinn & the 13th month cd · sab 028

the son of dave carter, bassist & vocalist for legendary 60's psychedelic group country weather (consult pokora ...), and named after mr. leitch, quinn grew up on a horse ranch in walnut creek, ca and began writing songs at an early age. donovan's growing reputation as a first rate darkly romantic penman (thanks to contributions to the skygreen leopards and solo as verdure) has culminated with his latest endeavor, a new solo vehicle known as donovan quinn & the 13th month.

rather than aping or ducking genres, quinn has crafted a bright spectrum of songs best described as 'american.' x-ian folk, languid indie pop, vu cool, loner country, and west coast psych are touchstones, with quinn's singular lyrical abilities & taste for sun-baked song at the fore. ever the flower bed romantic, quinn has – at the risk of over-simplification - written a classic "break-up record;" albeit one filtered through surrealistic tenderness and riddled with red herrings & feelings of betrothal. though not exactly lost in a sea of scarves, quinn is indebted to the vulnerability, humor and bitterness present in the works of ronnie lane, skip spence, nikki sudden, gene clark and basement tapes-era dylan. weaving earthy melodies around quinn's characteristically hazy vocals is the 13th month: a small rotating cast of players that includes jason quever (papercuts), karl bauer (axolotl), hélène renaut, and jess roberts.

ulaan khol i cd · sab 026

throughout his career as a solo artist, and through membership with the celebrated ensembles thuja and mirza, steven r. smith has had a hand in creating some of the most compelling and singular instrumental psychedelic music of the past ten years. smith's latest project, ulaan khol, moves beyond the eastern european-inspired sources and scales employed by his work as hala strana towards an approach alternately true to his personal musical lineage and in a realm beyond any pre-existing work. as ulaan khol, smith digs in deep with a palette of drums/guitar/organ to craft a monolithic & expansive free form, feedback-heavy atmospheric din that bonds the disparate realms of fushitsusha and high rise with popul vuh and flying saucer attack.

as ulaan khol, smith has planned a maximalist three-part suite, 'ceremony.' in the first installment of the trilogy, i, the tone is overwhelming bleak as the pieces (all untitled) caterwaul, moan and crumble. dripping with basement doom, ulaan khol's cosmic histrionics emanate with the raw essence of white light/white heat jettisoned by harmonia's amorphous drifts.

sab 022 pumice pebbles

island living affords absolute polarities in both geography and the psyche - tranquility & isolation. this duality is present in the music of pumice - the eccentric, flummoxing and oft-gloomy one-man band helmed by stefan geoffrey neville, a resident of the cultural hamlet of auckland, new zealand.

though pumice’s skewed take on experimental folk and pop songwriting is firmly rooted in the outsider vibes of downunder stalwarts like pip proud and alastair galbraith, the fruits of his labor are singular in scope as neville weaves his own personal mythology mired with comedy, melancholy, humility and tragedy and delivered with vivid clarity. pumice’s pesky brand of loner kiwi diy - precariously devoid of fatuous pose - is a colorful, desolate soundworld unto itself.

on pebbles, the umpteenth pumice full-length outing, stefan neville excavates the mutant rock of simply saucer & the idiosyncratic, rhythmic compositions of moondog (at his most playfully abstract), and re-contextualizes those touchstones via the pages of a mid-70s incredible hulk comic book.

pebbles offers the unlikely marriage of astute refinement and wild abandon, with songs uplifting & sincere, yet dark, with oddball substance to spare. featuring some of pumice's best makeshift pop songs to date, pebbles even manages a few excellently fractured instrumentals that harkens to david kilgour or the clean.

the child readers music heard far off · sab 021

the child readers tread the implied ground that lies somewhere between a music heard far off and a music finally pulled together. active since 2000, loren chasse and jason honea, the child readers, present the disparate dualities of metaphysical improvisation and meticulous composition in their otherworldly recordings, an adventurous & dense take on art-pop songwriting unheard since the heyday of cherry red and 4ad (imagine eyeless in gaza nicking from the xiu xiu or richard youngs songbook).

rather than solely draw from any musical discourse, the child readers found inspiration in the creative adventures of rockwell kent, lawren harris, charles burchfield and sherwood anderson in making their fourth & best album, music heard far off. presenting music bathed in the beauty of everyday things, the crs’ avant-pastiche approach touches upon musique concrète, pastoral pop, new romanticism, fractured folk & minimal techno with equal prejudice. sonic prayers to country, wastes of sea, songs, drawings, particular times of day and different furs are all presented here as esoteric sing-a-longs.  aiding honea & chasse’s vision are three short films (the video album ‘superstition island,’ contained on the disc), eye-popping album artwork, and contributions from mark williams (mirza), rob reger (thuja) and christine boepple (ov).

music heard far off was recorded, played back, re-recorded and collaged in various locales, including the california redwoods and coastlines, estonia, berlin, madrid and portugal.  the true stories contained therein unite listener and creator for a unique musical experience; the duo’s confessional torch songs offer an intimacy that may embarrass the untrue of heart.

sab 018 ov noctilucent valleys

there exists a sense of optimism in ov’s humming analog drones, a floating light within a pack of ominous clouds. building from their brilliant debut cdr, nocilucent valleys takes ov's expansive palette, blurrs and disguises instrumental thresholds, and presents sheer sound augmented by mysterious and mesmerizing gentle clamor. initial impressions slowly morph into demonstrative bliss, synthesizing the organic and the unknown.

ov is the new project from prolific, longtime collaborators (and recent newlyweds) christine boepple and jewelled antler’s loren chasse, both of san francisco. ov pushes the duo’s established scopic pallette further into the void. touching upon traditional minimalism and psychedelic free-form folk music, nocilucent valleys plays like the soundtrack to an otherworldly fairy tale, with foggy oscillations guiding the extrinsic myth.

abstract in presentation yet concrete in execution, the limitless creations that form nocilucent valleys harken to the amorphous eternal music of angus maclise, william basinski’s wondrous expanses, the sounds synthesis of richard pinhas or francisco lopez, alastair galbraith’s ur-drones, and markus popp or matthew bower at their most transcendental.

sab 017 flying canyon flying canyon

soaring like the eagles on robitussin, flying canyon's mournful california folk-rock slowly ascends into the desert sky. imagine the distant moan of a melted csn&y cassette floating up from a boombox deep in a ravine while crows pick at a corpse on the mesa.

existing in the sun-baked tradition of burnt-out cosmic californians like sky sunlight saxon, skip spence, david crosby and phil perlman, frontman cayce lindner is tapping a rich vein of indigenous folk, rock & country. much like their forefathers, flying canyon are not traditionalists. with organ, fuzz bass, cathedral harmonies & cavernous drums, the band slows the pace to a funeral crawl. an apocalyptic and almost religious feeling emanates from this music, while lindner, with quavering vocals of the young/garcia axis and a sensitive masculinity akin to kristofferson, delivers his high desert eulogies; mournful tales of eternal love and despair.

backing lindner in flying canyon are shayde sartin (kelley stoltz, the skygreen leopards, giant skyflower band, etc) and jewelled antler's glenn donaldson (the skygreen leopards, thuja, giant skyflower band, the franciscan hobbies, etc). donaldson recorded flying canyon on a crumbling reel-to-reel tape machine at his home in san francisco's famed mission district, mere blocks from where sir douglas quintet recorded their classic together after five lp.

new (summer 2006) album from stefan... his familiar-yet-alien array of broken baby monitors & toy-guitar/drum-kit being just about the best thing ever; in terms of damaged lo-fi songsmithing...
soft abuse press release...
with songs nestled halfway between xpressway's searing static and flying nun's dark jangle, pumice's stefan neville has quietly created a unique brand of fractured pop since 1991. despite (or because of) his activity in new zealand's cassette underground for the past 15 years, neville has only recently begun to crawl into the consciousness of outsider music fans.

yeahnahvienna was conceived and recorded during an artist residency in vienna in 2004. neville's precariously arranged arsenal of cassettes, chord organ, vocals, drums and guitar has yielded a fragile and fractured masterwork. a stark and melancholic affair, calling to mind alastair galbraith, sun city girls and supreme dicks. through neville's layers of hiss and murk lie beautifully stirring & shambolic downer hymns.

wooden wand's first album a solo artist is influenced in equal parts by legendary hedonists fleetwood mac and west coast sad sac judee sill. the intention to create something timeless and ageless informs each note this music, for better or worse. conceived during a sabbatical in los angeles, harem of the sundrum & the witness figg finds our man in search of the inherent muses of the pacific and what he refers to as the "other california sound" (e.g. gene clark's no other, john phillips' john, wolfking of la, skip spence's oar and david crosby's if i could only remember my name).

over the course of ten compositions, wooden wand (aka james jackson toth) delivers a sullen yet highly exploratory batch of songs brimming with cosmic spirituality, dark optimism and traces of folk blues.

these villages, the third album from hala strana, is a further culmination of steven r. smith's interest in eastern european folk music.

smith's original, instrumental compositions are peppered with interpretations of traditional songs, presenting a collision of the musical interests throughout his prolific career (as a solo artist and as a member of thuja and mirza).

built upon layers of sustained drone & delicately plucked and bowed strings, these villages creates a seamless and almost raga-like environment. it's a dark record, a definite work of beauty, and a perfect soundtrack for autumn's changing leaves and howling winds.

the skygreen leopards are easily the most structured of any band in the jewelled antler stable of projects, which is not to say that improvisation figures heavily to their sound (oh, it does). what you get are loosely-structured psychedelic folk songs arranged with banjos, bouzoukis, 12 string guitars, tape loops, hammond organ, and a host of other instruments. one thousand bird ceremony is easily their most accomplished and fully realized album yet, and it's the perfect soundtrack for the summertime.

soft abuse press release...
we are on the edge of a genre that has no name. we've been compared to rowe's work with radio, cage, merzbow, organum, v/vm, pita, christian marclay. all those references are fine but don't really define what we were/are doing here. dino (felipe) and vanessa (payes) were my first really good friends in the us with whom i shared a similar musical outlook. after moving from miami, we kept sending original creations to each other and mutilating, layering, recombining, re-sampling and recursionizing them until they felt complete. in this way we have maintained our own dialogue about music. equipment has changed, abilities have evolved, and now after six years comes audios, our first 'official' cd. dig in or dig out.
