august 2010 release ; a veritable smorgasboard from new zealand legend alastair galbraith ...

present (partially) are the morose folk numbers, abetted here by many stabs at sound-collage, some rather rough guitar numbers (love the one in the sound-sample there), wry little casio nuggets, bouts of freedom, and the like ... all sounding positively inspired, tying together a series of different narratives that have been running about in alastair’s work since his (xpressway, then siltbreeze, funnily enough) debut(s) 20-odd years back ...
siltbreeze press release...
galbraith, alastair / mass
siltbreeze sb 136

that alastair galbraith should return to the siltbreeze fold (responsible for his debut lp, morse, in 1993) for his latest release seems practically tailor-made. but while morse followed traditional avenues of rugged folk narrative tinged with psychedelic foxing, mass is an unchartered, one-way trip through a world of ritual.

consisting of 22 tracks, this new album runs the gamut from mysterious beauty to just plain mysterious. broken guitars, percussive loops, backwards tracking, a (homemade) glass harmonium, lullabies, bagpipe thievery and the odd bit of fighting talk are just some of the many bricks laid here, with galbraith himself as the mortar and amiel balester, michael kohler and david kilgour providing assistance here and there.

mass is an expansive whopper prepared to go anywhere and do anything to get there.

fabulous diamondsfabulous diamonds ii” long playing record

  • untitled (1)

  • untitled (5)
august 2010 release ; second outing from jarrod & nisa ...

way more attuned to the patterned organ-minimalism of this one (vs. the dance/dub-oriented tones of s/t) ; several impressively monolithic blocks of unchanging sound on this one (case ; the sound-sample) ...
siltbreeze press release...
fabulous diamonds / fabulous diamonds ii
siltbreeze sb 135

the second full-length outing from fabulous diamonds is a continuation of the lush and mesmerizing electro / percussive landscapes explored on their self-titled debut lp (released on siltbreeze in 2008). jarrod zlatic and nisa venerosa spark lots of musical embers along the way: dub, trance, house, ambient, minimalist, hints of suicide and terry riley--basically everything from silver apples to silver apples of the moon.

fabulous diamonds are equally at home in indie gulags, art galleries or disco gullies. fans of the more esoteric side of siltbreeze- - blues control and us girls, especially - should be mightily chuffed by the beauteous hypnotic pop fab ds are laying down here.

the c&b1991 pre-shadow ring recordings” seven inch single record

  • c-town breeding ground
  • kent custer

  • cave of ice cats
  • father’s dead
march 2010 release ; first release of this suite of songs recorded by a still-wet-behind-the-ears graham lambkin & darren harris, a couple of years before they’d get their dry leaf discs imprint going ...

... all of the shadow ring trademarks are there ; barely capable guitar-strangle, wry / observational wordplay (sung through a telephone handset from the sound of things), murky tape-warble, and kitchen-sink percussioneering ... things reach a head of steam with the (kind of unbelievable) near-side-lengthcave of ice cats” ; nothing more than a guitar being “unplayed”, then laid to rest ...

highly recommended for the shadow ring / lambkin lifer & the drive-by aphorist alike ...

siltbreeze sb 132 7"

street date: march 16th, 2010
ship date: march 8th, 2010

the c&b is short for cat & bells club, a brief precursor that would soon be transformed into the estimable poetics of the shadow ring. studious fans of the band's releases may recognize this name from the whimsical word search found on the back cover of their 1995 some of us 7-inch. ah, finally; mystery solved & now all the ducks are on the pond.

while early shadow ring managed to fuse equal parts tyrannosaurus rex mystical recitations with throbbing gristle aural idolatry, the c&b seem divinely born out of the sputtering taps of brown ale that flowed freely down the gullets of various first-generation diy shufflers, most notably, 49 americans or door and the window. and while this is just dumb luck, there's no denying a genus, unintentional as it may be. the templates for the ruminative, droll & original wordsmithing not to mention the threadbare musical accompaniment that would soon become the hallmark for the shadow ring sound are now available for the first time ever in a 300-press 7-inch, four-track ep.

original artwork by founding member graham lambkin.

  • baal's balls (8:00)

  • lovely and free (6:53)

siltbreeze debut from this black velvet fuckere affiliated/running collective-act, which, to my ears, sounds like a more swamp-water laden wooden wand & the vanishing voice w/occasional forays into something(s) approaching the whole swedish commune-psych vector (listen to the sound-sample) ... nice stuff.
siltbreeze press release...
spawned from the formidable louisville, ky collective known as black velvet fuckere (valley of the ashes, phantom family halo, kark, etc.), sapat resides as the centrifugal force in this midwestern psychedelic madrigal set in the psychosexual backwaters of the mighty ohio river. for the entirety of the '00 decade, members have kept busy collaborating with and/or massaging the egos of various and sundry avant-pontiffs such as robert fripp, magik markers, dead child (david pajo's metal band. that's right, david pajo!) and eugene chadbourne -- when not honing the orgone energy of sapat.

the fall of '06 saw their debut release, a seven-inch on bvf entitled tongue-tied & staid that had a few astute bloggers comparing the action within to "aggressive blues a la captain beefheart and the magic band." however, for this self-titled full-length release, sapat has opted for a different, more organic sonic waft. acoustically packed to the gills, the octet effortlessly strums and blows breezy vibes, emitting kosmisch melodies and teutonic ambience that channel-- julian cope-like-- past giants such as limbus 4, siloah and lord krishna von goloka (you know, the a-team of krautrock). once you launch into the group's spacey and entrancing, yet calming and soothing asteroid belt, you might mistake the ozarks for the alps if you're not careful. and who could blame you? you're way up there and the air's thin; hallucinating's a must.

times new vikingdig yourself” long playing record

  • lion & oil

  • not high

  • we got rocket
  • natural resources
  • i love mine
  • dance walhalla
  • indian winter
  • fashion to talk about the moon

... just a few copies of this long o/p vinyl version ...
siltbreeze press release...

my first encounter with times new viking was in the form of a cassingle. i found it lodged in what appeared to be a shrine to them on a street corner during our annual litter crusade. inside the cassette's handmade case was scrawled "this am band. good band!" next to that was a crude drawing of what appeared to be three people playing instruments. it smelled musty and had a real creepy, cultish vibe to it. i was intrigued. playing the cassette i was at once taken back at the raw primitivness of the music. the organ wheezed and croaked, the drums snapped with sickness and a guitar hacked through it all like a serrated, gangrenous knife. on top of this was a frantic male/female vocal drama. it sounded like demonic incantations or really elaborate recipes being delivered in a frantic, almost mantra-like chatter. it was unlike anything i'd heard in a long time. i needed to get to the bottom of the times new viking mystery.

long story short, in the following months i saw tnv perform numerous times and got to know them rather well. and yes, i have found many more shrines (and continue to find them to this day).

what you have here is a collection of songs found on the various shrine cassettes. they've all been lovingly fucked with my mr. mike rep, (the man behind the lo-fi genius of guided by voices' propeller and get out of my stations among other things) and as the old saying goes "the proof is in the pudding." tnv successfully skirt the current homogenization of the rock press pigeonhole. neither are they new-weird-america, nor are they newnoise- underground. i suspect times new viking are at the forefront of a new, yet-to-be defined movement. it's only a matter of time though. and when that time comes i want to be there. my shrine needs a motherfuckin' name!

... entirely confounding / blood-thickening set from this italian trio (marco calandrino, pietro la rocca, francesco calandrino) - undoubtedly cued-on by a lethal cocktail of esp-disk’ gunk, ejwussl wessahqqan, & weapons-grade hallucinogenic alkaloids ...without of a doubt one of the better unlimited-freak-out-or-die-lineage sides i’ve heard this year ... there’s a rightly righteous feel in just how the saxes blare, organs creep, & drums ring out ... lacing things up w/vocal mumbling & little bits of plundered music & sound-effects (listen to the sound-sample) ...fits in gorgeously w/the whole electronic-psych thing ; albeit in a more desultory / basement-wastoid kinda way ...highly recommended !!!
siltbreeze press release...
located within the trapani province of sicily, oper'azione nafta considers their self-described "un-rock" as "a blowjob from luigi russolo." there's little doubt the great futurist author of the the art of noises manifesto would be anything but chuffed by such salacious bravado. indeed, the trio pours on the racket and sounds like they were hatched in a custom-built russolo intonarumori. successfully putting the on back in bonkers, oper'azione nafta doles out only the berserk, which might be why, at any given time, their unstoppable onslaught taps into rock/improv fizz a la sun city girls, etron fou leloublan or the butthole surfers, various fmp blat, and mev-like electronic scramble. when they claim "we are oper'azione nafta and we kill bambi!" who among us would question it? besides, a nice bowl of sicilian-styled venison ragout would really hit the spot.

released in a vinyl-only, one-time edition of 500, cavuru is the band's debut release.

loud, wasted bedroom zombie-bleed from this young, hungry columbus ensemb, ; wading out in the salted tidal pools amongst “the lost” ...
siltbreeze press release...
let's spin the history dial back and wonder what if hitler had inherited six million dollars instead of being responsible for the deaths of six million jews? think about it-- no anne frank, joseph mengle, or auschwitz; marzipan sales would be way up, cocaine legal, and vegetarians would have had an early advocate and mentor; the german sheperd would be the national bird; watercoloring might even be a serious medium-- the mind boggles. and as an ardent fan of classical music (not to mention the six mil burnin' a hole in his pocket, mein gott!) you can bet adolph would have been on board with psychedelic horseshit. the sounds on magic flowers droned captures the rickety skeletal pop of step forward-era fall, the lo-fi fuzz of swell maps, and static noblesse of slay tracks-era pavement. is that classical enough for ya? for sure, this full-length debut is no parsifal, but to these guys, sometimes a spear is just a spear and the holy grail is a movie made by monty python. as for wagner, four outta five housepainters will tell you theirs is a name you can trust. now where'd i put that joint?

considered by the columbus cognoscenti as the "little brother band" (stooges-style) to times new viking (mc5-style), psychedelic horseshit first came about as three buds determined to crash a hippie fest and jam retardo. when asked for their name, singer/guitarist matt whitehurst replied, "just call us psychedelic horseshit." the band killed, the name stuck, and thus the die was ignominiously cast. since then, they played with the urinals, country teasers, dan melchior, blues control, toured with pink reason and times new viking, ruled a couple showcases at the 2007 sxsw, basically doing what they can to lay the foundation for the release of this debut lp (a previous 7-inch on the columbus discount label made many 2006 best of lists, too).

distempered, jaded, harmonious, and ramshackle, psychedelic horseshit keeps the glass half full; the question is, do you have the courage to drink their wry and wizened brew? sure you do, it's the tonic of champions!

alan lichtrabbi sky” compact disc

  • rabbi sky (1-4)
  • all blues
1999 solo release by alan licht, his third overall...
siltbreeze press release...
musically, it would be rather fantastic to describe rabbi sky as a hybridization of this previous two efforts (the evan dando of noise?, corpus hermeticum, 1997 and sink the aging process, siltbreeze, 1993); if you feel a compulsion to nod in their direction, console yourself by thinking of this one as a most excellent extension.

listening to the opener, the title track executed in four movements, the listener is cast headlong into a minimalist menagerie; the bracing, string-tingling beginning segues into hypnotizing, ecclesiastical chord organ drone that then resurrects into a tremendous cut-and-paste finale of looped and overdubbed guitar that whirls around in the air like a white-winged moth performing a lascivious, improvisational fandango.

on the other hand, “all blues” (the second and final track, dedicated to both james mcnew and phill niblock) is pure aggro-muzz that takes on an almost anthemic persona.

...

mr. ubiquitous lends his formidable name and image to a siltbreeze project. experimental drones and noises with nods to phill niblock and noted pop subversive james “dump” mcnew. a big, clanging, obstreperous, kosher meatloaf of an album.

1997 release ; believe this was the last siltbreeze album by the dunedin-based trio of bruce russell, michael morley, & robbie yeats ... this has (in recent years) turned from being my least favorite outings in the band’s extensive oeuvre to being the one i reach for the most (usually in preparation of extended drives) ; quite removed from the grim, fizzling mid-range fuh of tiny-amp, practice-room fidelities & getting more into odd “post” -production choices (listen to the sound-sample for the first few minutes of “plane” ; more of a this heat-lineage tape-piece than anything else) ...

dead c / tusk
siltbreeze sb 64cd

after years of flirting with profound torpor, the finger is removed from the carb and new zealand’s favorite sluggish trio gets a lung full of bigtime entropy. slow, quiet, and barely played, this masterpiece sounds like it was recorded by several death row inmates on morphine. the future of rock right here, right now.

... while the next year's tusk -- titled ironically after the fleetwood mac album -- proved to be their last effort for siltbreeze. it also marked the end of their most prolific period, as the band subsequently spent an astonishing (for them) three years off record.

  • man in the mirror (part. 2)
1996 release from adris hoyos, bill orcutt, and dan hosker’s harry pussy ...

fidelity-wise prob. the most wasted thing you’ve ever going to hear ... i gather this is culled from live recordings (witness the interspersed crowds, mumbling “sonic youth” & “you suck” between every “song” ...) jumbled into a single confrontational blast ... sort of doesn’t make much sense on any level & we’re all the wiser for having endured it ...
siltbreeze press release...

harry pussy / ride a dove
siltbreeze sb 50cd

... that was followed not long after by a full album of new material titled ride a dove, also on siltbreeze. toward the end of 1996, feehan left his position as auxiliary guitarist, and was replaced by dan hosker. hosker debuted on a self-released live album, tour (alternate title: fuck you), in 1997. that year saw the band's final concert performances ; more singles followed in 1998, including split eps with frosty and pelt, but by the release of their final album on black bean & placenta, they had already called it quits. that album, let's build a pussy, consisted of a brief snippet of hoyos yelling, which orcutt then stretched out for an hour using computer software. following harry pussy's demise, hoyos briefly moved to chicago, then worked with transmission and monostat 3. orcutt had already released a solo album in 1997.

dead c / trapdoor fucking exit
siltbreeze sb 40cd

the dead c was formed in dunedin, new zealand in 1987, with a lineup of guitarist/occasional vocalist michael morley (a onetime member of the evocatively named wreck small speakers on expensive stereos), bassist and xpressway label head bruce russell, and drummer robbie yeats (formerly of the well-liked kiwi pop band the verlaines). in keeping with the early formats of xpressway and morley's own precious metal imprint, their earliest releases were only available on limited-run cassettes, but they also hooked up with flying nun in 1988 to issue their first lp, dr503 (which was retitled dr503b and dr503c for later reissues). a second flying nun lp, eusa kills, appeared in 1989 and featured a bizarre cover of t. rex's "children of the revolution."

the dead c next forged a relationship with the philadelphia-based indie siltbreeze, which would issue the majority of their output over the90s. the first was 1990's helen said this, which was later reissued on cd as part of a two-fer with the formerly cassette-only trapdoor fucking exit (the latter's title was used for the cd).
