ancient monsters

ancient monsters forthcoming release.

it's 1991.

kevin is about to record some guitar. the haggard engineer writes down 'take 777' onto the mixer. kevin has spent almost half an hour detuning his guitar to blend with the dense layers he has been building. the engineer holds his breath, watching the reels on the tape machine begin to spin. something is about to happen.

they wait, everything is silent.

kevin lifts his hand from the guitar and nods at the engineer to stop the tape.

'i can hear something,' he says. 'i can hear a phone ringing.'

the engineer looks at kevin. they have both been awake for nearly three days. the studio is isolated and it's maybe an hour's walk to the nearest house. the rest of the band have disappeared back to the city days ago. there is no phone in the studio.

this must be it, the engineer thinks, it's happening.

kevin searches for the source of the ringing. he carefully lifts the sandbags and sound-proofing away from the door and leaves the studio. the sound leads him outside, along the path towards the village. he sees a phone, glowing dimly, somehow resting a few feet above a stone wall. the ringing continues.

'answer it', the engineer says.

it is only much later that kevin realizes the engineer has been speaking to him in latin for most of the evening.

kevin picks up the phone and places the receiver to his ear. the rosicrucianism is complete. for 57 minutes and 10 seconds kevin stands motionless, barely breathing, transfixed by the sounds from the telephone. this is the slow music of whispered dreams. it is everything that kevin has been working so hard to manifest. kevin is finally hearing what he could only imagine before. kevin knows that this is what he needs to complete his work. but the album and his life seem millions of light years away. kevin cannot see the village anymore, he cannot even feel his own body - all that exists is sound.

the engineer waits patiently nearby, what his ancestors have told him has come to pass:

the ancient monsters are here.

sijis releases: 'clark' (siji15 - 2006)

music and cover photo by boris hauf (akm/austro mechana) may + june 2005, berlin
mastered by todd a. carter, sparrow sound design / bel_air, august 2005, chicago

a question before we begin: don't you lie awake at night wishing that philip k dick had written music to accompany his vision of dystopia? all that time he was working in a music store and we only get books...
well luckily, mr. boris hauf has supplied us with the next best thing: 35 minutes of dedicated science fiction and long late nights at substance d. parties.

mr. hauf takes the beat structures of those head-nodding electro parties we were too young sneak out to and twists the framework, tickles the rules into a howling rush of claustrophonic rapture. we are hurtling through a long tunnel, cantankerous robots squeeze past our electrocuted ears, basting our brains with the moisture from the walls.

sure you can dance, but thinking is so much more handsome these days.

this release, 'clark', contains our first misheard song accidentally dedicated to the first post human: tony clifton. that should be enough for anyone.

isn't it about time somebody started thinking about dance structures, tried removing the comfort blanket of expected thuds and hi hat traffic jams? 'clark' is full of semistructured hazards, howls of disco happenstance and cyborg jockeys with gabbling crankshafts and melting tiny percussive parts.

mr. hauf's adjustments both to the metre grid frameworks and to the power structures inherent in beat music create 4 important and scientific events:

1. unwanted explosions
2. long muttering drives on low resolution autobahns
3. high levels of buttery machine funk
4. the syncopated molecules in microwave meals will finally understand

the great anti-anti-utopia is here.

it's a sijis release. would you expect anything less?

gary smith - supertexture [siji14cd] 2cd

with a background in both pop playing and classical composition, gary smith has released close to twenty albums and worked with such luminaries as shoji hano, bill fay, rhys chatham, john stevens, hugh hopper and aufgehoben no process.

his guitar playing is consistently building up a formidable vocabulary of technique. without the use of effects pedals, overdubs or 'studio trickery' smith's current performances are a revelation of gestural manipulation. the guitar is palmed, stroked, and smothered in search of new sounds. smith's playing is a looping, graceful expression of energy, ideas and sheer joy.

his solo recordings touch many spheres of reference: laptop's fascination with glitch music but from a live perspective; the muffled and trapped strings echo prepared piano as rough pressured rhythms are layered over wandering multiple glissandi.

in this exciting project we are presenting a double cd release featuring a series of gary smith's incendiary solo recordings coupled with treatments, interpretations and re-imaginings from:

bill fay -- pear tree tomorrow
steve roden -- this gray m
elliott sharp -- t and g
david tibet -- black ships kill into view
paulo raposo -- handful of sand
bernhard günter -- hyper garden
tom wallace -- acquired waste
zoltan kodaly school for girls -- londoni hataridos burgonyatozsde
peter rehberg -- gsrx 05
tianna kennedy -- j train
charles hayward -- unravel
bjnilsen -- apple thief
aufgehoben -- process / recess

all tracks are exclusive to this album. bill fay's 'pear tree tomorrow' features a new recording and interpretation of songs from the 'tomorrow, tomorrow and tomorrow' album. david tibet's track 'black ships kill into view' is an unused song from current 93's new 'black ships ate the sky' album.
