new humansaka vito acconcinew humansc. spencer yeh” compact disc

  • you in the background (25:59)
  • double negative (32:38)
click the play button to hear an excerpt of "double negative"
march 2008 release ; a document of a “happening” what which occurred at the elizabeth dee gallery in nyc during 2007 involving howie chen, mika tajima, and eric tsai’s new humans art / music project (i’ve got / have had some of their lovely self-pressed records in stock) plus artist / architect vito hannibal acconci (i practically lived inside his “island in the mur” in graz for a straight week a few years back - completely amazing piece of work there ...) on recitation and c. spencer yeh on double-bowed violin ...

this is, for all intents and purposes, a free-for-all, with acconci’s filthy texts dotting the wall of electronic sound in the first piece (getting all-but-buried in spots) - following by an extended “instrumental” take in which spencer’s acoustic / unamplified violin (front / center) does battle with new humans’ battery of noise-makers ...

removed from the art-world connotations (the images of the staging of the event show each member of the ensemble bricked-off, each in their own cubicle / cell) this is a fine slab of noise-drone improv... spencer is particularly on-point throughout (natch) & new humans have dropped any semblance of “rock” from their approach, now dealing in pure free sound. highly recommended !!!

new humans
aka vito acconci / new humans / c. spencer yeh
cd / semi 011

noise surrounds and permeates us, and no one is more responsible than the new humans from that loudest and noisiest of metropolises: new york. from installation art to ear splitting live concerts, this infernal power trio lead by artist mika tajimi eschews no collaboration, no matter how insane. guitarist and artistic leader tajimi is supported by electronics specialist and voice acrobat howie chen, drummer eric tsai, as well as a large number of guest musicians. the new humans like nothing more than to drag friend and foe with them into their noise avalanches.

semishigure proudly presents the fourth release, a unique live collaboration with artist vito acconci, a pioneer of body/conceptual art, and vintage experimentalist c. spencer yeh. this album consists of two concerts that took place during an exposition of the collective at the elizabeth dee gallery in new york. two electrifying, memorable performances that just had to be registered on cd.

the last time american performance legend vito acconci collaborated with a band was more than ten years ago, when he worked with punk rock brigade the mekons. a similarly untainted, classically grim punk attitude shines through in his spoken word performance with the new humans. “you in the background” is the name of their jointly raised middle finger to the world. floating on the ominously swelling waves of noise created by the new humans, acconci throws all frustrations overboard. captive to a feverish, shamanic trip, acconci speaks of each and everyone’s search for their own identity. acconci has made a special selection from his audio works for the occasion. texts such as “now do you believe the dirty dogs are dead(1978) and “cry, baby!(1977) still sound like screams for enlightenment and liberation. c. spencer yeh’s plaintive violin careens into the impenetrable wailing wall of feedback. the new humans not just voice, but scream their anger of life under the bush regime, and in acconci they have found a worthy ally.

 c. spencer yeh and the new humans go the whole hog on the second live concert, an immensely loud drone séance lasting half an hour. like no other, radical violinist yeh manages to infiltrate any collective, be it dream/aktion unit, comets of fire or smegma. through his trademark exorcising velvets violin sound yeh manages to create unbearable tension with the new humans’ sound avalanches in hot pursuit. during the performance, a glass sculpture is destroyed and the noise of its breaking amplified. at any moment the waves of noise terror threaten to submerge yeh, but he stands firm. thank god this all-engulfing live experience has been registered for posterity!

december 2007 release; a vinyl-only collection of pieces composed by florian hecker, intially for carsten höller’s exhibit during the blanche nuit in paris, but eventually installed at höller’s solo show @ the moca in marseille ... psycho-acoustic effects are the order of the day; florian; by now, something of an expert in said, let’s loose the kraken via all manner of twisting/gurning wave-shapes that more than capably augment höller’s captured light-spectra (of which a lovely example has been pressed, butterfly-like, into the gatefold) ...

hecker
hecker, höller, tracks
2lp / semi 010

spending time together in gothenburg in the spring of 2003, florian hecker and carsten höller discovered that they don't share only a passion for munich's culinary speciality saures lüngerl. carsten later driving off to berlin, equipped with a single cd-r of some unreleased hecker tracks playing on heavy rotation in his car, and florian enjoying the upside down goggles, they said goodbye, but not for long. once florian mentioned to carsten his fascination for psycho acoustics, he soon found a cd of diana deutsch's famous musical illusions in his mail box, followed by an invitation to conceive a sound piece to accompany carsten’s light wall, then planned as a contribution to 2003's nuit blanche to be held at gare de lyon, paris.

florian wanted to second the persuasive notion of the flickering alpha wave inducing light wall, with a sound piece at least as hypnotic as a dreamachine and as abrasive as a quality acid house bassline. not interested in musical illusions per se, he aimed to break the psycho acoustics down to the level of sound particles, not having to deal with scale, octave or tritone illusions in the style of diana deutsch. the result was a 4-minute long, intensively pulsating piece, a flickering rhythm with a constant precedence effect and a phase inversion at a frequency of 7,12 hz to add even more spatial disorientation.

the precedence effect fascinated him as a beautiful example of spatio-sonic confusion, exposing the very heart of many psycho acoustic applications, where only some spare but carefully chosen modifications of slight temporal or tonal shifts, time delays, loudness and pitch differences are responsible for intense and unusual sonic phenomena. as a classic example of french bureaucracy the planned combination of the light wall and the precedence effect sound piece never happened. 9 months later carsten contacted him, having found an even better occasion to present the work; his solo show at the museum of contemporary art, marseille.

he made a series of tracks, all using a super abundance of acid phase inversion, intensively klickering hypnotic pulsars, crescendos of precedence effects, and eventually titled them höller tracks. the shifting pulsars opened in two microtonally different versions in two identically empty rooms in the museum. the piece which actually was on display at the museum can be found in its two different versions on a dvd with the published book, and in again another slightly different version on his album recordings for rephlex. this was the driest, most sober take out of all the höller tracks.

the 9 pieces featured on this album don't lack any of the spatial disorientation and temporal confusion, however they consist of the more intense, eccentric versions, some from the first productions, some from more recent ones.

note: these pieces should be played at maximum volume via loudspeakers. the early reflections from your room are essential. headphone listening is not recommended.

maja ratkje
adventura anatomica
cd / semi 009

there once was….the incomparable voice of maja ratkje. fairytales sometimes come true, certainly in the case of this norwegian composer and voice acrobat - the infernal twists and turns she manages to contort her voice in are breathtaking. with the help of modern electronica and the most agile vocal cords of the western world ratkje manages to create her own magical domain. in that sense, she is consciously following in the footsteps of such female vocal pioneers as meredith monk, diamanda galas and laurie anderson, constantly searching for cross-fertilisation between voice improvisation, musical drama and technological innovation.

a fairy tale world comes to life in sublime fashion on maja ratkje’s latest collaboration adventura anatomica, a musical work for theatre she created with choreographer/danser odd johan fritzøe and stage designer in november 2005. this is a world of bittersweet fairytales, of wolves and innocent maidens losing their way in a dark wood, a world of fear and despair and joyful ecstasy. in any case, emotions such as these coexist closely in ratkje’s world. on aa she deploys her entire vocal arsenal: whispering softly, cooing, emitting deep throat sounds usually culminating in an overwhelming vocal deluge. her vocal outpourings are amplified through electronica, creating a blazing dialogue between her own voices. øyvind brandtsegg created a live sampling instrument called improsculpt especially for the purpose and ratkje knows like no other how to make it serve her needs.

aa develops into a sound ritual for voice, electronica, harmonica, flute, dictaphone and metal objects. in addition, she manipulates the live sound made by the dancer.  ratkje then chose to record everything in real time for this cd, whereby every little sound of the performance was faithfully recorded.

aa is maja ratkje’s first solo release on semishigure. previously, bottrop-boy brought out a collaboration between her and compatriot lasse marhaug titled music for loving (b-boy 021). ratkje also worked with artist monica bonvicini on erwartung as part of the en/of series (en/of 027).

liam gillicklos angeles: a film by sarah morris” compact disc

  • los angeles: a film by sarah morris. soundtrack by liam gillick.
semishigure press release...
liam gillick
los angeles
cd / semi 008

los angeles: city of angels, metropolis of temptation. its image mesmerises many, reaching its apotheosis at the oscars. a city of narcissistic glory: faces are polished to perfection and polite smiles are exchanged under a blazing sun. everyone wants to be centre stage in bustling los angeles. for british-american sarah morris, this is the ideal moment in its history to capture the city on film for ever.

previously, she portrayed other american metropolises such as miami (miami), new york (midtown) and washington (capital). the artist is always looking to discover the underlying structures of a city moving at full steam. she dissects the geography and architecture of the city, but above all, immerses herself in the psyche of its inhabitants. in los angeles the camera races headlong through the city, passing luxury villas, flashy film studios, the dolled-up ladies, cosmetic surgeries, but also the commotion surrounding the oscars and its self-important leading actors. nothing is too outlandish in this overheated city where everything and everyone appears to be for sale. visual artist liam gillick was musically inspired by the glamour and glitter of los angeles; his soundtrack is infused with all of the city’s ingredients. this evocative and glittering electronic soundtrack disregards facetious witticisms, yet, all the same, accentuates the breathtaking lust for life of the inhabitants of this metropolis.

gillick’s soundtrack for morris’ film capital appeared on semishigure (semi 001 cd).  for bottrop-boy’s en/of series morris set up a once-only lp-art project with jan jelinek (en/of 001) and rob mazurek (en/of 018).  for now, los angeles is the pinnacle in the collaboration between morris and gillick.

david grubbs
two soundtracks for angela bulloch
cd / semi 007

david grubbs (bastro, gastr del sol) has a longstanding history of collaboration and interest in contemporary visual arts. many of his solo albums, for instance, feature covers by artists such as doug aitken, marcel broodthaers, cosima von bonin, stephen prina or albert oehlen. this new mini-album features two compositions commissioned by angela bulloch for two of her installation pieces.

british artist angela bulloch has been making installations since the early 90s, while starting to use the idea of the ‘pixel’ in 2000. these works are formally based on 50 x 50 x 50 cm cubes that have a screen on one side on which constantly changing colours can be shown. the cubes can be arranged in different positions. a software program runs pixelated original film material, mostly taken from cinema or tv, which are then projected onto shifting colour fields that change according to their original composition.

the two pieces on this cd accompany the works z point and horizontal technicolour, two major works that make use of - or, rather, are connected to - antonioni’s zabriskie point. z point is based on original film material of the famous desert explosion from the final scenes, whereas horizontal technicolour uses material filmed by the artist herself at death valley, a setting similar to the one used in the final scenes from antonioni’s film.

the two pieces by david grubbs are beautiful and intricate works in which the original antonioni soundtrack, the translations of the film in other languages, and his own sound palette come together. they show yet another different approach to his diverse musical capacities and are maybe closest in spirit to his thirty-minute raven mini-album on rectangle.

the cd comes with a 12-page booklet with previously unpublished stills from the death valley desert taken by angela bulloch.

private pleasures
cd / semi 005

gerwald rockenschaub is one of the most wellknown visual artists, currently living in berlin. apart from making art he has been deeply involved with music from the start, playing in bands, dj-ing, organising parties in his former hometown vienna and occasionally composing music which got released mostly through his own definitely something label. private pleasures is his first album in more then 5 years, a perfect showcase of his weird and very personal hybrid of half-defunct techno rhythms with a great sensibility for electronic music.

twelve signals
cd / semi 004

new cd from german sound artist christina kubisch on semishigure, a similar exploration of sound & silence as the first one, diapason (semi 002). on twelve signals kubisch used original miner bells from a german mine to produce an hour long piece of bell tones. several electrical bells were hit with small hammers each giving forth a sequence of clear bell tones that hover in the air. this live recording was made in the st. matthaeus-kirche in berlin: halfway through the recording the original ringing of the church bells mixes with the sounds of the recorded miner bells.

steve roden
light forms (music for light bulbs and churches)
cd / semi 003

this is the third release on the semishigure label that specializes in music & sound works related to films or installations from the visual arts. light forms is the new album from calfornia based musician/artist steve roden which contains two pieces that are constructed from the sound material of two installations that he made in germany. both of these pieces started with the same sound: a group of small glass light bulbs handled acoustically. these acoustic sounds were then processed electronically and for this cd version put together into two beautiful, delicate and quiet compositions that are highlights in the already impressive oeuvre of this artist. 'truth is the bell' was created for an evening of performances in saarbruecken related to the theme of light. 'bell is the truth' is the soundtrack of a filmwork installation realized in berlin in the singuhr-hoergalerie. contains a wonderful 12-booklet with photos of the installation and the film.
