danielson / dymaxion / odd nosdamour givest (remix)” seven inch single record

  • our givest (odd nosdam remix)

  • jokin’ at the block (dymaxion remix)
full disclosure ; until this week, i’d literally never heard a lick of music by the danielson (familie) ... but then a single word jumped out at me from the press materials (below) :: dymaxion ...

i’m on record as a rabid fan of jeremy novak’s on/off-again deconstruction(s) ; his piece here is an absolute masterclass on how to turn in a interesting/subersive remix of a pop tune w/o completely alienating the original’s fanbase ... dave madson does his damnedest via danielson’s wall of distant shoegaze guitars, grafting a dry / robotic mpc lilt over its various root-brances ... but seriously ; when are we going to get a new dymaxion record ??? i’ve all but worn-out my copy of the singles-comp ...

“our givest” remix 7”

catalog #: sc191
release date: october 21, 2008
format: 7”

october marks yet another opportunity to look back upon and celebrate some of our favorite danielson titles from the rich back catalog that has spanned over a decade. this epic journey of retrospection began with the vinyl reissues of tell another joke at the ol’ choppin’ block and fetch the compass kids (both being released on secretly canadian) and tri-danielson!!! (alpha/omega) (being released on sounds familyre). next in line in this series of releases is a particularly sweet treat in the 7” vinyl format. odd nosdam (renowned musician, dj, cofounder of anticon) took the reigns on remixing the danielson track “our givest(originally from brother is to son) while jeremy novak of dymaxion tackled “jokin’ at the block(originally from tell another joke at the ol’ choppin’ block).

when listening to the odd nosdamour givest” remix you’ll hear the blown out sound of 60’s garage rockin’ records (early kinks / the sonics) coupled with an incescant groove, slightly psychedelicized, in glorius mono with a touch of shoegangster shoegaze haze. in the words of daniel smith, “i have met a bunch of the anticon guys and have worked with why? already. when it came to thinking about another remix, i always thought the groove in ‘our givest’ could be pushed out more. i talked to my buddy josiah from why? and he said that odd nosdam was the man for this. josiah was right as always.

with the remix of “jokin’ at the blockdymaxion picks up the thread to commemorate the famile with a patchwork quilt, stitched from handclaps and heartbleats, banjo and bass, call and response. gather the folds around you and drop the needle back in the haystack. what’s daniel’s take on this? “for years i have discussed with jeremy the possibility of dymaxion doing a remix of ‘jokin' at the block.’ i could imagine him having fun with that tuba. and what would a remix of a 12 minute song sound like?

another beautiful step forward as the season of retrospection continues…

bobb trimble
harvest of dreams cd / lp
(sc163, released: 11/06/07)

"incredible, multi-layered late night listening of the highest order. a cross between extreme gentility and musical savagery that will have you growing horns out of your own forehead, if not used carefully. without a few contemporary style-nods, you would never guess the album was originally released in 1982. one of the decade's best albums, filled with a mysterious charm that grows with each listen" - byron coley, 2007the catalog number says it all, in pristine glory: bobb 81. one can only picture how uniquely bobb trimble seems to confront reality. it's the early 80s, and as a new decade rolls by, he seems to be going backwards -- as if his inner tape was rewinding to the sound of the world he left behind. like a latter-day roscoe holcomb, trimble reaches that high lonesome sound of modern new england through harvest of dreams, his second, rarest, last and best lp. one can only guess at the ugliness of the reaganesque suburban nightmare he's trying to escape -- tacky clothes, silly haircuts, nonsensical blockbusters, arcade video games, and plastic crap everywhere, all betraying the era's lack of genuine emotions.

apart from maybe jandek and daniel johnston, two other souls he could find comfort with, bobb trimble displays some of the 1980s' most honest, melancholic and moving american music. it's as if melvin, toxic avenger's hero, had decided to go bedroom recording.

born august 4, 1958 in marlborough, ma, bobb grew up in the worcester suburb of northborough feasting on the beatles and later bowie, pink floyd, and queen. the music he went on to create wasn't an attempt to replicate the genius of those artists, but to stand alongside them with his own masterpiece of mythical, hysterical songwriting genius.

bobb and secretly canadian are proud to present you with iron curtain innocence and harvest of dreams, two releases that will now reach a genuine audience with full reissue treatment. this is great news for rare music lovers, since bobb's original lps are highly sought-after collectors items fetching hundreds of dollars apiece! each cd release contains never before seen photos of bobb trimble, the wormtown scene, and restored and fully realized artwork.

iron curtain innocence cd / lp
(sc162, released: 11/06/07)

"a delicate, unsettling dip into a boiling pool of subconscious imagery and otherworldly pixie vocalism. the best tracks cause ripples in the space/time continuum. bobb trimble's first album appeared like a ghost that had slipped through reality's curtain. impossible to place inside any rational context, the music and voices seem to have been created inside your head and, indeed, maybe they were." - byron coley, 2007

before listening to iron curtain innocence, bobb trimble welcomes you with a tommy submachine gun salute -- trigger finger poised, guitar at ease and knees bent while alone at the microphone. it's a gesture only to be topped by his back jacket call-out: dear john, paul, george and ringo, if i'm a good boy and work real hard, may i please be the 5th beatle someday?

swell mapsjane from occupied europe” compact disc

  • robot factory
  • let’s buy a bridge
  • border country
  • cake shop girl
  • the helicopter spies
  • big maz in the desert
  • big empty field
  • mining villages
  • collision with a frogman
  • ... vs. the mangrove delta plan
  • secret island
  • whatever happens next...
  • blenheim shots
  • a raincoat’s room
  • the stairs are like an avalanche
  • new york
here’s a bit i wrote a few years back about the previously available version on mute:

recent issue of chronologically the second full swell maps lp from 1980 with bonus tracks from the first "collision time" lp (excluding, of course, the material on "collision time" that's also on "jane from occupied europe", again) and select tracks from compilations, "collision time revisited" and the vaults. swell maps were nikki sudden, epic soundtracks, richard earl, and jowe head during the decade known as 'the 70's' and were prescient enough to lead every living/caring soul w/a 4-track & a bible for years to come into some serious, serious soul-baring (or at least, "big maz" series of tone-band forays introduce certain youth to pleasures of cavernous reverb applied to all brushed elements...). completely & totally seminal.

in mid-1979, the swell maps released their full-length debut atrip to marineville, a crazy-quilt of punk energy and krautrock-influenced clatter.after the release of the speaker-shredding single "let's build a car," the group recorded one final studio lp, jane from occupied europe, before breaking up. each of the members followed their own career paths, playing solo and forming bands: sudden formed the jacobites, soundtracks joined crime and the city solution, and head played with the television personalities. - jason ankeny

fantastically done reissue of the first swell maps lp, which was previously available (for about an hour or two) on mute. one of the great, unsung (well, partially sung, at least recently) art-punk records, featuring not only some of my favorite songs of all time, but some of my favorite song-titles (come on! “vertical slum”? “adventures into basketry”?). short blats full of weird skronk-elements and key non-sequitirs. i’ve, in the past, described the maps mid-to-late 70s output as “what syd barrett would have undoubtedly gone on to sound like in the punk era, you know, if it weren’t for the acid casualty & all...”

these secretly canadian cd issues are chock full of relevant info, huge booklets, bonus tracks, remastered, etc... everything you could ever want really...
secretly canadian press release...
noisy and experimental, britain's swell maps experienced little commercial success during the course of their chaotic career, but in hindsight they stand as one of the pivotal acts of the new wave: not only was the group an acknowledged inspiration to the likes of sonic youth and pavement, but their alumni - most notably brothers nikki sudden and epic soundtracks - continued on as key players in the underground music community. although sudden (vocals/guitar) and soundtracks (piano/drums) formed the first incarnation of the swell maps (named after the charts used by surfers to gauge wave intensities) as far back as 1972, the group did not begin to truly take shape until 1976, when the siblings enlisted bassist jowe head and guitarist richard earl. in the spirit of punk's "do-it-yourself" mentality, they formed their own label, rather records, and issued their debut single - the brief, jarring "read about seymour" - in the early weeks of 1978. local media support soon won the group a distribution pact with rough trade, but they did not resurface until over a year later with the single "dresden style."

each album has been remastered, includes liner notes and unreleased photos as well as bonus tracks not available on previous versions of these albums.
