title: clean plate
label: rvng intl.
formats: 12" lp

release date: 6/14/11
genre: ambient / electronic / new age
notes: limited to 100 copies

during the great blizzard of 2010, julian grefe and justin geller of pink skull alongside quentin stolzfus (azusa plane, mazarin) holed up in a two hundred year old barn with 20 some odd (and some not) synthesizers, the mighty pink skull modular, a 1 inch 8-track, and enough mushrooms to shelter a village of smurfs.

the result of this meeting of the mind-melters is the clean plate album, an analog inner space journey in the tradition of tangerine dream's phaedra and brainticket's voyage. gurgling pads, stalactitic arpeggios, whole synth hog drones, groans and moans, guide the listener through the tube into a sublime union with an ominous reality abyss. clean plate is the unusual precursor to pink skull's forthcoming album on rvng intl, psychic welfare.

strictly limited to 100 vinyl copies, silk-screened covers.

february 2011 release ; sparkling new issue of this oft overlooked late-berlin-school chestnut, forged by ash ra tempel drummer harald großkopf during a getaway late in 1979 ...

... notable for harald’s killer motorik drumming throughout (easy to see why he was the “go tosession drummer for so many of the original krautrock era’s elite ; just listen to the propulsive, nimble figures underscoring the myriad sequences via the bit in sound-sample to your left) & anthemicend of the nightklassische (such as the title cut) it’s obvious why this was a choice target for the inaugural reissue program on the fledgeling 5-boroughs imprint rvng intl. (whose “frkwys” campaign has done a bang-up job bringing non-denominational acts like excepter & psychic ills in direct contact with folks like juan atkins, faust’s joachim irmler, gibby haynes, chris & cosey, and jim thirwell) ; with the aid of distance, both geographically & temporally, it’s now easy to see this as the missing link between the moe / roe-isms of years prior (certainly the light melodic touches do remind of later cluster) , the looming italo-disco of moroder, and the whole “minimal-synthwave that followed in its wake ...

... comes in a gorgeous, reversed vg-kids” type lp jacket, printed in glorious silver, with a 4-panel fold-out insert with tons of photos (one side) & liner notes (the other) in german & english ... oh, and i almost forgot, there’s a gratis disc in it’s own sleeve w/ reworkings by rvng-relatable artists (i get dan lopatin’s reverence, definitely ... and alexis georgopoulos & even james ferraro turn in pieces that are apropos to grosskopf’s spirit) ... i know i’m all “berlin school” this, “berlin school” that these days (well, not just me ; it would appear that just about everyone has bitten this particular bug) ; this is a great way hear the original formula, impeccably executed, in true boutique fashion ... highly recommended !!!

harald grosskopf - synthesist lp & v/a - re-synthesist cd
cat #: rervng01 / rervng01.5
release date: february 15th, 2011

synthesist is the debut album by harald grosskopf, the enigmatic percussionist behind ash ra tempel, klaus schulze, and cosmic jokers. originally released by sky records in 1980, rvng intl. celebrates the 30th year anniversary with this newly mastered and packaged reissue.

berlin, germany, summer of 1979, harald grosskopf, then 30 years old, was at a personal and creative crossroads. his girlfriend just left him, and ashra (manuel göttsching's "solo" project) was on temporary hiatus. harald always considered himself a rhythmic accomplice to his numerous collaborators' lead, until prompted by some fellow musician friends to pursue a singular creative vision.

armed with a minimoog and revox reel-to-reel, grosskopf set off for the west german countryside that fall and isolated himself in a home studio for almost two months to record synthesist. the temperamental analog synthesizer and sequencing technology created a long learning curve eventually resulting in a harmonious union of man and machine.

the human response undeniably colors the eight songs of synthesist and aligns the album with some of the more melodic output of the berlin school of electronic music. the title track and "transcendental overdrive" almost take on pop qualities. harald's live percussion opens up tracks like "so weit, so gut" and "emphasis" for jammed out exploration. where the album veers into the ambient space clusters of "b. aldrian" or "trauma", it's hard not to consider synthesist the nexus of krautrock, kosmische, and new age.

re-synthesist, the companion compilation to synthesist, is an assemblage of reinterpretations of grosskopf's work by a new vanguard of electronic and experimental artists including oneohtrix point never, blondes, arp, stellar om source, cfcf, james ferraro, and many others.

although synthesist has been unavailable on vinyl for almost three decades, it doesn't fetch unfathomable collector fees. selecting synthesist as our first reissue is more about the connectivity to a new audience than the scarcity fetish for a select few. it's about sharing harald's story and celebrating an album musically accomplished and compelling from start to end.

the synthesist lp comes as a deluxe package on post-consumer recycled goods, including a unique reverse bound record jacket and full color liner notes by harald grosskopf in english and german. the re-synthesist compilation is only available with vinyl purchase.

... the history of winter-spring collaborations (especially in the narrow field of flowing electronic music) being what it is, i have to say this exceeds my expectations of what a two-daypow wow” type, purely improvisational studio session between this lot could produce ... nary a sequence in sight (odd, given borden’s primary rooting in motor-rhythm lines) this instead lurks purely in the gaseous, timbral voids of deep inner space, with dan’s woozy sawtooth lines & laurel’s occasional whisper-vox up front, borden & godin’s slo-mo melodic ooze the bedrock, & ferraro’s phaser-bake the tile-grout that keeps the whole thing unified ...

vinyl version comes with the folkways-style wrap-around cover, generally excels at getting the message across ... highly recommended !!!

title: frkwys vol. 7 - borden, ferraro, godin, halo & lopatin lplabel: rvng intl.
formats: 12" lp
cat #: frkwys07
release date: 7/17/11
genre: experimental / synthesizer / improvisation

the full-length player of frkwys vol. 7 features pieces improvised in various forms by david borden, james ferraro, samuel godin, laurel halo, and daniel lopatin.

when lopatin (oneohtrix point never, ford & lopatin) and rvng intl. began discussing this frkwys collaboration, borden's work in mother mallard's portable masterpiece co. and his seminal music for amplified keyboard instruments album were mutually / ecstatically acknowledged. while rooted in academia, borden's minimalist compositions deal in natural themes, evoking expansive environments.

the idea to grow the project to include additional collaborators was inspired both by borden's accomplishments in ensemble improvisation and by a basic desire for collective energy and levity. atlantic sound studio in dumbo, brooklyn became the meeting destination for lopatin and borden, alongside musicians halo, godin, and ferraro.

over two days in august 2010, the ensemble played infinitely, taking breaks only to discuss next directions, past pursuits, and, of course, gear. during tour breaks the following fall and winter, the endless hours of recordings were paired down to the selections of frkwys vol. 7. the music of the album represents full session takes, edited only for time.

the cosmically dense but dynamic nature of the recording reveals the diverse ingredients seasoning the spatial stew. "people of wind" parts 1 and 2 were amongst first takes from the two-day session. the pieces exhibit the ensemble in early harmony, allowing each other textural counterpoint play while avoiding rigidity. "internet gospel" parts 1 and 2 demonstrate the players at ease and taking turns at solo accompaniments, ending in a fourth world freak out. "twilight pacific" and "just a little pollution" are compiled from middle points of the session - structured statements in solidarity.

the limited edition lp version of frkwys vol. 7 is packaged in thick black jackets with a two-color adhesive wrap.

frkwys vol. 6: julianna barwick & ikue mori lpcat #: frkwys06 / wcr004

frkwys vol. 6 features four pieces composed and performed by artists julianna barwick and ikue mori as part of a month-long installation curated by rvng intl. at white columns gallery, new york, ny.

when rvng accepted an invitation by white columns director matthew higgs to display in the all-purpose project space, we envisioned a venue to host a frkwys collaboration. the non-profit gallery's long-standing support for experimental music dates back to the noise fest, a nine day event curated by thurston moore in june of 1981 that featured many prominent downtown new york musicians.

keeping the institution's regard for nyc avant music in mind, we looked to ikue mori, a member of no wave anti-stars dna and pioneer of drum machine and software improvisation, and julianna barwick, an artist recognized for the ethereal loop-based vocal compositions of her 2009 florine ep and 2011 the magic place lp, to forge the focal point on our opening night event.

for the installation, a particle-board cubicle was custom constructed and placed at the center of the project space. the cubicle wall separated julianna and ikue to their respective seated work stations, while web cams captured the musicians at work / play and became interactive projections manipulated by video artist erik mika, illuminating this exercise in simulated engagement.

each of julianna and ikue's improvised performances on october 29th, 2010, were cut live to vinyl via portable lathe. on the album's june 14th release date, the set of four unique lathe cuts and an elaborate art book will be made available for offers on igetrvng’s website. the book features creative direction by will work for good and photographs from the two events by aubrey mayer and jody rogac.

julianna and ikue met a second time three weeks later at white columns, november 16th, 2010. this time the two musicians collaborated without an audience, cubicle, web cams, or lathe, but with past experience and spirit in place, an exercise in actual engagement. the four pieces of frkwys vol. 6 include two performances from the first collaboration and two performances from the latter collaboration.

frkwys vol. 6 is a shared release with the sound of white columns. the lp is available in limited edition, packaged in thick black jackets with a two-color adhesive wrap. all lps come with a 24-page black & white zine; the book features creative direction by will work for good and photographs from the two events by aubrey mayer and jody rogac.
