we are happy to introduce the excellent young singer and songwriter hilde marie kjersem with her first solo album. neither a jazz album nor your typical melancholy nordic singer songwriter album, let´s say it’s pop music with a twist, quite a few twists come to think of it, inviting the listener to a dramatic, beautiful, mysterious, seductive, dark, intricate and quite simply different sounding and fascinating musical ride.

this is the first solo release for norway's singer/songwriter hilde marie kjersem. kjersem was born and brought up in the northwest coastal town of ålesund, with seven brothers and sisters and a father with a passion for science fiction and kenny rogers. like many of her young contemporaries in norway, she studied at the music conservatory. she has released two albums, red shoes diary (2004) with her now-disbanded tub quartet and twelve o'clock tales (2005), a duo album of standards with jazz guitarist jon eberson.

the last couple of years, she has worked on a killer for that ache, the first proper album under her own name. far from being a jazz album or your typical melancholy nordic singer-songwriter album, kjersem names some of her inspirations to be david lynch, roger rabbit, finn graff (legendary norwegian newspaper illustrator), danny elfman, robert wyatt, josé saramago, kate bush and tim burton.

with her present band, including shining main-man jørgen munkeby, she has delivered some stunning performances that have been extremely well-received in the norwegian press. a killer for that ache can be called a concept album of sorts, in the way that kjersem sets out to critique the media by stepping into various disguises and characters using comments, facts, lies, repetitions, assumptions, exaggerations, humor, irony and absurd observations on things that might have happened, things that never happened and things that never will.

not surprisingly, the result is an eclectic selection of songs that are completely indescribable. let us just say it is pop music with many twists, making it a dramatic, beautiful, mysterious, seductive, intricate, fascinating and unique musical ride.

first 7” vinyl single on rune grammofon comes from moha! in the form of two brand new tracks, ”progorama” and ”teknosangen”. both tracks are made with fellow member of n-collective, jeff carey. the source material is taken from the forthcoming new album on rune grammofon but both tracks are exclusive for this single release. together with their recent concerts these tracks also indicate that moha! might be going in a slightly more structured direction musically without losing their unhinged fire and creative spark. a great teaser for the new album due in early september.

pressed on white vinyl and in an edition of 500 copies, only 300 will be available either directly from us or through our distributors. the rest will be sold at the band´s concerts.

rcd 2069 - food: molecular gastronomy

now down to the duo of iain ballamy and thomas strønen, food looks to be more active than ever. this, their fifth album, was recorded by jeremy cox over a period of two years and mixed by ashley slater, who also contributes on three tracks. maria kannegaard plays fender rhodes on five tracks.

strønen, considered to be one of norway´s most inventive drummers, was always an important writer in food and it´s fair to say that a good amount of their earlier output was written as opposed to improvised. “molecular gastronomy”, however, is mostly improvised, much in the same way as the music of strønen’s other duo humcrush.

given the new set-up and a fresh approach, it´s also natural that ballamy, without doubt one of the great british sax players of his generation, gets more room for his excellent playing. finally, this is also a great sounding album!

ole-henrik moe (1966) is a composer and musician of extraordinary talent and originality who has never really found his place inside the various music scenes in oslo and norway. too extreme even for the most open minded in academic music circles, his like minded will most likely be found among followers of sound artists like deathprod, maja ratkje and lasse marhaug or composers like scelsi, feldman and varese. this double cd contains some of the most extreme solo violin music ever written, performed and recorded. two pieces lasting 40 and 43 minutes, both pushing the performer to the edge when it comes to endurance and concentration. for the recording of these pieces the composer, himself a more than capable violinist, was happy to leave the difficult task to kari rønnekleiv, an accomplished player perfect for this kind of challenge. liner notes by cecilie ore and rolf wallin.

out of norway's super-fertile impro scene, moha! are boldly leading the way with a sound that encompasses the best of rock, free jazz and electronic music. despite the enormity and broad spectrum of sounds that constitute their unique style, it is the work of just two talented young men, anders hana (24) on guitar, obsolete electronics and a pallete of effects pedals, and morten j. olsen (25) on drums, triggering a multitude of noises from each skin and cymbal using custom built software.

having played together in various projects for close to 10 years, they have developed a high level of control and understanding in their musical communication. they compliment and confront each other, with sharp and mechanical movements on one hand, free flowing and loose gestures on the other. it´s a real scorcher; short, intense, to the point and brimming with head explosions, youthful energy and urgency.

”commuter anthems” is the second album from eivind opsvik and aaron jennings. opsvik is from oslo, norway, but has lived in new york since 1998 where he´s playing bass in several cutting edge groups. guitarist aaron jennings is from tulsa, oklahoma, but moved to new york after college. as with many of our releases ”commuter anthems” is difficult to categorize. both players come from a jazz background, but that´s only a small part of the picture. folk and country influences provide the album with a rural, almost relaxed feeling as guitars, double bass, drums, concertina, pump organ, lap steel, banjo, and various recording techniques and software manipulations creates a filmatic musical story being played by a dreamy experimental pop orchestra.

on his third and quite brilliant new album, ”strjon”, arve henriksen is joined by his supersilent colleagues helge sten and ståle storløkken. sten has also produced the album. ”strjon” brings together the various sides of henriksen, from the zen-like solo pieces of his debut album ”sakuteiki” to the open-ended melancholia of ”chiaroscuro” and dark, brooding lyricism of supersilent. ”strjon” is the mediaeval name of arve’s hometown stryn on the westcoast of norway, referring to a streaming river or water. the nature around stryn is fantastic and the changes between winter and summer are quite drastic, from crashing avalanches in steep mountains to calm beauty and majestic tranquility. some of the music dates back to sketches made by a young arve henriksen in these surroundings, later worked on by both arve himself and helge sten.

”grindstone” is album number four from this young, vital, hard hitting and original quartet. as on their previous album they move between complex riffing, filmic soundscapes, jazz, classical and modern composition. people dropped many names when trying to place shining on the musical map, hearing elements from the mars volta and slayer via king crimson and mahavishnu orchestra to henry cow, this heat, ornette coleman, ligeti and messiaen. one thing they all agreed on was the striking originality of this young group who have gone through a radical transition from starting out as a postbop jazz quartet.

rcd 2059 - in the country: losing stones, collecting bones

we are absolutely thrilled with this album, a true original in the genre of the piano trio. the ensemble playing of this young group is excellent and have improved a lot since their much acclaimed debut from last year (rcd 2045). the 11 brand new tunes from pianist morten qvenild are bound to establish him as a writer with a strong and personal signature. we find elements from pop, rock, country, folk, blues and classical music, all very rich in melody and detail, new layers are revelead with each listen. none other than marc ribot is guesting on two tracks, swedish singer stefan sundtröm helps out on one track and morten himself sings the beautiful track that ends the album. the album was recorded at the legendary atlantis studio in stockholm, home of the first classic abba recordings.

huntsville is the trio of ivar grydeland, tonny kluften and ingar zach. grydeland and zach founded the sofa label for impovised music in 2000 and appear together and in various projects on several of the label´s releases. they have worked with kluften since 1998, as the core of improvising ensemble no spaghetti edition. huntsville contrasts sharply with their earlier work, and on the evidence of ”for the middle class”, reveals a quite different, more groove-based approach with strong elements of composition. musically there are traces from folk, country, indian ragas contemporary music and more, resulting in an original and highly intriguing blend of instrumental approaches.

rcd 2056 - svalastog: woodwork

true story, as told by per henrik svalastog himself: “i found an old norwegian zither laying around my grandfather’s barn in the mountains. it appeared that he had been a fiddler before he lost all his fingers at the sawmill and convertet to become a hardcore pietist setting down a prohibition against music, dancing, card-playing and television. that made me want to convert as well, from digital medias to real playing. from electronica to folk music. back to the sources. heritage and environment.” so it goes that per henrik is playing and improvising on archaic folk instruments like the ram's horn and harpeleik, which is a norwegian zither. he is then processing it all in the computer, resulting in a detailed and accomplished but soothing and quite hypnotic music. taking the music out of the city and into the norwegian woods, and not the arctic regions, as is the popular image if you come from tromsø and is associated with electronic music. per henrik svalastog is also a member of information who released the excellent “biomekano” (rcd2024) on rune grammofon in 2002. the previous year he did a stunning spunk remix for their “filtered through friends” collection (rcd2022), a track that is also available on the “until human voices wake us and we drown” vinyl box set.

the second album from the duo that is thomas strønen (food) and ståle storløkken (supersilent), now simply calling themselves humcrush, after the title of their debut from 2004. ”hornswoggle” is an alltogether more developed, varied and subtle collection of tracks, going from downright funky to abstract grooves from thomas while ståle is in his most melodic and atmospheric mood. comparable to supersilent’s most structured and accesible moments, this is an excellent addition to the catalogue.

originally released in 1998 as a limited edition (500 only) on biosphere´s biophon label. a breath of fresh air at the time, this excellent debut from phonophani still stands as one of the very best electronica albums ever released in norway. well crafted and full of ideas and original turns, it has a rare timeless quality that makes it sound as fresh today as it did back then. it´s difficult to come up with comparisons, but certain aspects of early alog (naturally) and boards of canada can serve as references. this issue includes three bonus tracks (20 minutes) from the same period.

thomas strønen is one of norway´s most prolific drummers, known from food, humcrush, parish, maria kannegaard trio and others, where he has often also taken on the role of writer and arranger and sometimes producer. ”pohlitz” is the 30th record he appears on, but his very first solo album. all the material is written, arranged and produced by thomas, but is, originally enough, a percussion record completely without ordinary drums. the music is improvised, with focus on details and melodic elements and with references to minimalists like (early) steve reich, traditional gamelan music and fellow norwegian arne nordheim´s classic electronic music.

moha! is our latest signing and the youngest artists on the label as well, the duo being guitarist anders hana (23) and longtime friend and musical collaborator, drummer morten j. olsen (24). anders is also a member of jaga, noxagt, ultralyd and ingebrigt flaten quintet while morten is a member of ultralyd and have played with a number of improvisers, including axel dörner, fred frith and the late steve lacy.

”raus aus stavanger” was recorded in the analogue heaven of athletic sound, home of great sounding releases from supersilent and scorch trio. and these two acts are musically the closest neighbours to moha! in our catalogue. ”raus aus stavanger” was recorded live in the studio with no overdubs, showing two young musicians at a very high level of control, communication and creative powers, the music being a powerful mix of high energy improv, slowburning drone riffing and detailed electronics. a most refreshing addition to the catalogue!

we are very proud to introduce a new, young group on the label, a unique trio that have come up with a truly great debut album. ”this was the pace of my heartbeat” is not your typical piano trio album, meaning that pianist morten qvenild (26) has skipped the keith jarrett school. when it comes to piano players he will admit to a certain fondness for paul bley and the late norwegian free player svein finnerud, but he also draws inspiration from pop writers when it comes to a sense of structure and modern composers such as messiaen and feldman for the use of space and sound.

the album include nine original qvenild compositions as well as a ryan adams cover and an interpretation of händel’s beautiful ”laschia ch’io pianga”. the album is an analogue recording and is produced by arve henriksen.

morten qvenild is already a central force in a young generation of extremely competent norwegian musicians operating with great ease between various genres. he is susanna’s orchestra and writing partner in susanna and the magical orchestra, he is a member, writer and arranger for acclaimed norwegian jazz singer solveig slettahjell, he was a writer and member of jaga jazzist and a member of shining since the beginning and up to their latest album. finally he is a member of the national bank, a pop/rock group with the horntveth brothers from jaga jazzist in the lineup, recently enjoying several weeks at the top spot of the norwegian charts.

in the country is the piano trio he started in 2003 after meeting bass player roger arntzen (28) and drummer pål hausken (25) at the norwegian academy of music in oslo. as with morten, they are both active in other groups as well, roger most notably in damp with shining leader jørgen munkeby and pål with singer hilde marie kjersem in tub quartet.

nils økland is an innovative violinist and hardanger fiddle specialist who is creatively expanding the range of the traditional music of his homeland. he is a renewer of folk music, consistently building bridges to classical, contemporary and improvised music. his playing combines freedom with respect for norway’s musical heritage and he is concerned both with the preservation of the oral folk music tradition and with the experimental possibilities of the music when it is charged with modern impulses.

this is the third phonophani album, the second for rune grammofon. the title refers to mysterious connections between material things, and the album is all about rediscovering the great mystery of music. through dissecting the sound of ordinary or "real" instruments such as cello, vibraphone, guitars and the human voice and dissolving melodies into their elementary particles, espen sommer eide seeks to excavate the "ur" music itself. instruments are often sampled and manipulated using software designed and made by himself, being a keen programmer who prefers this to the so-called industry standards, giving the album a personal and unique sound. maja ratkje is appearing on one of the tracks.

rcd 2030 - arne nordheim: dodekait is with great joy and honour that we are able to celebrate our 30th release with a new album by one of the most distinguished personalities in norwegian music. not only that, "dodeka", meaning twelve in greek, is a small sensation in that the twelve pieces presented here have never been available on record before. these compositions are made from the building blocks and basic elements from nordheim´s work in warszaw between 1967 and 1972. considering the primitive working methods and the equipment available at the time, "dodeka" is also special in that it´s sonic qualities are quite astounding with a clarity and character all of their own.
