similar in some way(s) to the schimpfluch-commune chiang-may disc on tochnit aleph from a few years back, yet with a decidedly more through-composed feel ; one of the better outings from the schimpfluch camp in recent times ...

... now, about that cover ; before you all get your panties in a twist, i’d like to point out that the same painting (by jamie p. keenan, apparently) was used on the cover of the penguin paperback of philip k. dick’s “the man in the high castle” a few years back ... sure, it pushes my personal value-sensors a bit (not sure what point phillips is trying to make here exactly) but you certainly can’t fault him on grounds of subtlety !!!

as soon as the energy-levels hit their stride (basically within seconds of each piece’s beginning), it’s pretty much non-stop destruction as brakes fail, tires squeal, & glass is shattered ... i felt oddly calm after listening to both sides at a fair clip (a possible alternate use as audio therapy ?) ; perhaps this after my inner teenager’s fists got tired from pumping along for 40 minutes ... riotous !!!

the next time someone makes that old joke about noise sounding like a car crash can offer this lp as proof, its nothing but the sound of car crashes, all mangled up as only gx can do it - tires squeeling, glass shattering. metal crunching, wrecked, totalled - screeeeeeeeeeeee smash crash screeeeeeech smash smash crash - quite possibly the perfect noise album, gx says its his best lp to date, i'm inclined to agree - wear your seatbelt

important to note that this isn’t all harsh-noise per se. there’s quite a bit of sound-research antics, some free-skronk, and more than one side-length blissed-out drone ... and for fuck’s sake, the amps for christ side is an all-out free-folk bit (with sitars no less !)

possibly the penultimate release in a series of locked-groove releases instigated by rrron “emil beaulieau” lessard back in 1993 with the “rrr-100” 7” single record (feat. 50 locks per side by folks like jim o’rourke, idea fire company, borbetomagus, skullflower, chop shop, new blockaders, et.al) then again in 1998 with the “rrr-500” lp (250 on each side by ... one a piece by pretty much a who’s who of late-90s experimental sound) ...

and now, 11 years later, we get the next logical evolutive step ; 1000 locked grooves (500 per side !!!) ; 50 each by 20 artists picked by rrron based on the following algorithm ::

this time i decided to focus on only 20 artists and give them plenty of room to stretch out - really glad i did because this one is much more solid than the other two, noisewise

before i invited the artists, i had devised a simple formula for myself
50/50 = noise/electronic (experimental)
50/50 = new/old school
50/50 = usa/intn'l
50/50 = people i always work with/people i've never worked with

the unsung genius / hero here is undoubtedly aardvark mastering’s paul brekus, who must have spent countless man-hours getting the metal mothers cut just right (i can only imagine the number of time he got halfway through cutting a side before making a single mistake & having to start over from scratch !!!) ... despite the fallout from such a thing a thing (i.e. the deluge of blackened noise tapes & cdr’s i’m going to be handed at gigs over the next year or so comprised of “prurient loops” will undoubtedly be bafffling) the quality & attention to detail put forth by just about everyone is seriously impressive ... easily on the records of the year thusfar & a testament to the staying power & endless, mutating possibilities of the vinyl lp record ...

2003 crank sturgeon lp. did i ever tell you that the loudest concert i ever went to (and yes, i’ve seen my bloody valentine and pantera) was a crank sturgeon concert? i saw him in the basement of an art gallery in allston ca. 1995 or so (maybe with con-dom? or skin crime? but definitely with rrron...) and people were drinking wine out of those cardboard wine boxes (like carrying them around on their shoulders and holding them up to their mouths! it’s funny how you remember things like that...) and by the time crank sturgeon played we were all pretty lit... i didn’t notice the pain/volume as much until i tried to go to a gong & f/i concert later the same night and suddenly noticed that couldn’t hear anything; not gili smyth’s delicate space-whisper nor franecki’s acid-guitar.

fine, fine lp of jason lescalleet’s “electronic music” - a more composerly bent than on offer via other solo lescalleet releases ; much decay and lo-frequency murk, the best of all possible worlds ...

jason lescalleet is best known for collaborations with nmperign (greg kelley and bhob rainey) and thomas ankersmit. electronic music finds lescalleet working in his "standard" environment, running short loops of tape between several ancient recorders, working up a fairly dense sound matrix and then augmenting those sounds electronically on the fly.

"morphology" begins with isolated scratches that eventually become engulfed in deep rumbles, sounding like a thunderstorm raining pellets of static. "litmus tape" is more of a midrange roar, as though one is hearing passing jets through ten feet of concrete. like much of lescalleet's best work, it has a density that allows the listener to return time and time again with the surety of hearing new elements on each occasion.

"accidental-oriental" begins innocently and softly before suddenly leaping into a kind of metallic wash, another sort of roar that brings to mind ball bearings rolling in steel basins, but muted to remove the treble. it builds to a speaker-endangering climax right at the end that leads directly into yet another inferno, the concluding "beautiful whore." the tone shifts to something darker here, the taped burblings taking on the character of threatening noises emerging from fissures in the walls of a lightless path. it finally explodes into shards of its constituent elements, closing the album with an unsettling entropic feel.

contrary to popular legend here's a 14-year-old philip best single-handedly inventing all-out noise in 1981 (while merzbow was stuck in his bedroom trying to emulate the abstract nww on cheap cassettes). the japanese noise style started much later in the 80s than most people realise.

naturally there are a multitude of tracks from current / former wolf eyes members & acolytes, but i ended up being the most impressed with the efforts from redrot (odd, sliding electric bass & almost aphex-twin lineage feedback-squeal beats), evenings (harsh, zap-heavy electronics), cotton museum (woozy electro-acoustic improv), and mammal (ditto on the drum-machine tip) ...

quite reasonably priced, with the 6 lps in plain white sleeves slid inside a silk-screened / decapitated bags unlimited lp mailer coated in an assortment of visages of state-dwellers / originators offering hours of party-fun for all within eyeshot ... highly recommended !!!
