though not yet properly established as a solo artist, jeremy simmonds aka voafose has remained a collaborator, background influence and spiritual advisor to artists such as luke vibert, afx and boymerang for years. this debut album release is an opportunity to properly represent his presence.

contained on the cd are a collection of ambient solutions and sonic curiosities, selected from a 20 year archive of material. expect to hear explorations into the aural benefits of pitch instability, the textural artifacts of audio tape, audio strobing, vocal manipulations, as well as muzak-concrete and a few psychiatric realizations.

the following instruments and ingredients are evident; roland sh-101 and jx8p synthesizers, fender rhodes mk 1 stage piano, various delay/reverberator/modulator units, modified tape recorder devices, feedback, music and voice captures from radio and television, famous clock bells, a world war i bomb casing and faulty plumbing.

voafose recording experiments started years before collaborative music -- from childhood experiments/playtime with discarded, hand-me-down tape recorders... capturing sounds from radio, tv, and the outside world through childhood ear-filtering. many of these sounds appear in previous collaborative work and feature on the cd also -- either within part of the sound collage or individually as intervals between pieces (e.g. "big ben," composed from source material generated as far back as 1985). the aim of this album is to provide a mixture of atmosphericals, reflections, aural psychosis and comedy. it's also a chance for rephlex to showcase someone they consider to be a master of timbre and sonic wit.

pierre bastien is a french composer and multi-instrumentalist for dance companies, who built his own mechanical orchestra for musical accompaniment. this is his second release for rephlex.

since 1987 he has focused on solo performances, sound installations, recordings and collaborations with such artists as video/film artist pierrick sorin and karel doing, bauhausian string sculptor jean weinfeld, british singer and composer robert wyatt, fashion designer issey miyake, as well as performing in pascal comelade's bel canto orquesta. bastien played in some collective bands as well as with the dominique bagouet dance company, all the while literally building his own orchestra called mecanium -- an ensemble of musical automatons constructed from meccano parts and activated by electro-motors, that perform with acoustic instruments from all over the world.

as composer michel f. côté notes, "a composer's dream : a fail-safe orchestra at one's fingertips obeying ever so gently to his every command : a timeless sounding orchestra, both futuristic and slightly dada, conjuring ancient traditions in its surprisingly sensuous music ...the musicians of his orchestra are machines. and the idea behind it is simple, efficient and poetic : to have traditional instruments (chinese lute, morrocan bendir, javanese saron, koto, violin, sanza, etc.) played by a mechanical instrument made of meccano pieces and recycled turntable motors. these hybrid and self-playing sound sculptures perform a series of short pieces, charming and hypnotic."

bastien currently enjoys about 80 contributors to his orchestra, with shows and installations around the world.

robert normandeau was born on march 11, 1955, in québec city (canada). after a bmus in composition (electroacoustics) from université laval (québec city, 1984) he moved to montréal and completed a mmus in composition (in 1988) and the first dmus in electroacoustics composition (in 1992) with marcelle deschênes and francis dhomont.

he is a founding member of the canadian electroacoustic community (cec, 1987). from 1986 to 1993, he was an active member of the association pour la création et la recherche électroacoustiques du québec (acreq) where he produced the clair de terre concert series at the planetarium of montréal. in 1991, he co-founded réseaux, an organisation for the production of media arts events. having produced several instrumental and mixed works, his current endeavors are focused on acousmatic music. more specifically, his compositions employ æsthetic criteria whereby he creates a 'cinema for the ear' in which 'meaning' as well as 'sound' become elements which elaborate his works. along with concert music he now writes incidental music, especially for the theater.

someone had just got glassed right in front of me at the george robey pub, finsbury park, north london, and i was thinking i wish i had stayed at home in my studio. oh, i might as well stay and watch the bloke with the bass guitar, who keeps wandering around behind the dj booth. that, i thought, is almost certainly going to be good for a laugh. the next thing i felt was a fuzzy vibration, as monophonic sound waves that had travelled from the other side of the room at the speed of light, compressing the air and displacing the smoke of ten spliffs, hit me in both ear bones simultaneously. it was mr. jenkinson who was turning my heartbeat into the sound of a ring piece modulated resonant phaselocked trapezoid backwards edit phlanged kick drum. he made the sound of ambulances turn into slide trombones and the sound of a secretary filing her nails into a 24-piece string section. when my partner grant wilson-clarriarge saw tom spasmodically twitching in order to play a funky bassline in time with a 347 bpm drum and bass track, he thought he should either be committed or recorded (fortunately he chose the latter). undoubtedly, tom jenkinson is the first man in history to orchestrate an akai-seltzer fizzing a two mega byte simms memory upgrade chip (with 1 nanosecond access time) and a toilet flushing. when mr. jenkinson is conducting, the rest of the world is in the pit. one of his earliest experiments in sound was recording an ant walking on sand. unfortunately, the experiment was cut short by a cat meowing. of course, this is not to say that tom 'squarepushing' jenkinson was the first person ever to discover that the sounds of everyday life can be more melodious than the sounds of traditional music. for instance, george bernard shaw once said, "nothing soothes me more after a long day of pianoforte recitals, than to sit and have my teeth drilled." the squarepusher is someone who wonders what the holes of a flute sound like without the flute. sound like sound never sounded before, richard rodgers and julie andrews gave us the sound of music, john cage and simon and garfunkel gave us the sound of silence and now the squarepusher gives us the sound of sound. - prichard.d.jams ... made in england.
