| | | recorded (usa) #recorded 010 cd ian nagoski “effortless battle” compact disc - efforless battle (31:37)
- ripped steam hinterland (14:11)
| 2003 release ; described by composer ian nagoski as the “best electronic thing i've done so far” ...
as ian is someone whose music i’ve really come to appreciate / love over the last odd-decade, i figured it was time to give this set the re-launch it most certainly deserves, especially in the wake of this renewed interest in static-leaning / monolithic electronic sound (see eliane radigue through brendan murray) ...
the two pieces here make for deep listening ; “effortless battle” offers a straight half hour of sliding blocks of sound sourced to an array of sound-art lineage instruments and the elusive triadex muse (early 70s digital synth / sequencer combo built here in town by a bunch of mit longhairs) ... “ripped steam hinterland” ’s pulsing filtered white-noise reminds me a bit of thorkell sigurbjornssen’s “la jolla good friday” ; slowly rising into a hail of sliding phase-patterns with a slight, ringing overtone that subliminally emphasizes a tonal center ...
mms’ copies come directly from ian’s stash ; as such the price is very reasonable ... highly recommended !!! |

the title track was recorded as a live performance to two-track, mixing layered recordings originating from london records 78 rpm test tone discs, daniel conrad's vibrating-metal-plate instrument - the wild wave - and edward fredkin and marvin minsky's triadex muse. it is the sound program to a video by catherine pancake.
the second track is all wild wave. released in 2003 and d.o.a. similar sound-wise to rick reed's dark skies at noon and eliane radigue's elemental ii.
best electronic thing i've done so far. |
