russian tsarlag / blue shiftsplit” long playing record

  • russian tsarlag - thank you for the plastic surgery you've given me

  • blue shift - the burrow
click the play button to hear an excerpt of "thank you for the plastic surgery ..."
april 2008 release ; a lovely split-lp (which, incidentally, comes with hand-sewn book containing some high-contrast scribble by both parties) by a disparate pair of providence’s more promising next-gen artists - russian tsarlag (almost pumice-ian no-fi bedroom damage with mythic, joe-meek-esque landlord-slaying abilities ...) and cybele “blue shift” collins (solo violin scrape ala kosugi’s bellows lp ... with errant drum machine) ...

that geoff (mullen, c/o whose rare youth label this appears) had the foresight to pair these two on one fine, green slab of musicol wax is testament to the whole contemporary providencething” - i’m sure these two walk in the same circles & don’t differentiate all that much between their respective songcraft & non-idiomatic improv moves ... choosing rather to revel in the be-all zest of “living” - frankly, i’m glad ...

one of the better / more convincing records of sub-sub-terranean goings-on that has landed here in the past few months - highly recommended !!!
rare youth press release...

ry-11 russian tsarlag / blue shift - split lp

grab a bag of gas and turn your hi-fi on, kids, cuz things are just getting weirder and weirder...

"thank you for the plastic surgery you've given me" features some of tsarlag's finest recorded work to date, including such hits as "back lot," "my slow hand," and a fine rendition of brian wilson's "don't worry baby." tsarlag fans might consider this to be a starting point for the more "orchestral" tsarlag sound - richly executed with jangly guitars, organ, drums, tape loops, and 60-cycle hum. drink piss!

"the burrow" gives us some of blue shift's most varied recordings yet - from solo violin improv, four-track fukkery, and vocal wheezing to all out gothic dub. wonderful music from a one-of-a-kind artist who consistently impresses with her emotional honesty and genuine creativity.

for certain people, this record will be like a slice of heaven. pressed on transparent green vinyl, with letterpressed covers, and a 32 page zine insert with illustrations, collage, and writing by carlos gonzales and cybele collins. get a copy before they disappear into the strange cave from whence they came.

eli keszlerlivingston” long playing record

  • (no tracklisting)
click the play button to hear an excerpt of "livingston"
february 2008 release ; the vinyl debut from boston-area percussionist/composer eli keszler ... those of you from around town might know eli as the guy that backed up jandek on drums last year, an honor he shares with alex neilson & chris corsano ...

... and in fact corsano’s self-released “solo” albums are a good reference point for keszler’s music here; mainly concerned with brittle, cracking drum-kit abuse coupled with detuned electric guitar & bells/gongs/extended-technique percussion-room lineage sounds, all performed by keszler himself ...

a very nice record; nestled somewhere between the late 70s no-wave vectors and the kind of bubbling over energy of latter-day free-jazz / psych (albeit with copious music-school chops) - eli’s someone to watch out for over the next few years; best to get on the bus early to reserve a seat. he’s on tour with geoff mullen (who released this via his rare youth label) @ the moment (feb 2008) - i urge you to check them out ...
rare youth press release...

debut lp by drummer/multi-instrumentalist eli keszler. a distinct composition in four parts, livingston is a brooding and dark meditation for drums, crotales, guitar, clarinet, bowed percussion, fender rhodes, nail violin, and tapes.

this is a rare kind of solo record, in that eli's obvious instrumental virtuosity is tempered with a refined sense of composition and emotional space. you don't get the sense that this is the work of a single musician. furious outbursts of raw percussive energy are kept in check by floating, distended melodies, and moments of silence are interrupted by the jarring clarity of high-pitched bells being bowed at close intervals. at times sounding like an indonesian gamelan being put through the wringer, and at others like the massive drone of an aeolian harp being played by the wind -- livingston effectively combines the influences of composers like giacinto scelsi and iannis xenakis with the improvisational energy and atmosphere of an artist like keiji haino.

clocking it at just over 23 minutes, this is a potent piece of music and an auspicious debut by a very talented young artist. limited edition of 300, with hand-screened covers. definitely recommended to fans of mirror, organum, espdisk, nmperign, jandek, evan parker and paul lytton, gruppo di improvvisazione nuova consonanza, phil niblock, etc.

first release (...after a 7” single and a cassette) on geoff mullen’s rare youth label - a double-disc compendium of contemporary goings-on in the providence, ri area, as compiled, lovingly, by geoff himself.

unlike many other providence “scene” compilations that feature, say, artists now signed to load; or artists that are friends with dom “prurient” fernow, this offers a pretty damn subterranean overview of what’s bubbling just underneath the surface of providence’s musical collective consciousness...
rare youth press release...
v/a : rare youth – new music from providence, ri

2cd compilation

here it is…a year in the making…a collection of new music from one of the most fertile and constantly changing locales in the union. featuring over two hours of music and spread out over thirty-eight tracks, rare youth brings together some of the most exciting artists at work in providence right now: work/death, kites, black pus, xerxes, heart2heart, russian tsarcasm, blue shift, lazy magnet, byron house, teenage waistband, black forest/black sea, unicorn hard-on, synb, leif goldberg, siege engine, lucky dragons and many many more.

sequenced to highlight the great diversity of musical stylings in this small town, this cd takes you on a smooth ride down the many colorful roads of: power pop psych noise, abandoned dronescapes, reckless free improvisation, emo power electronics, late night elven dance music, epic psych rock, shredded throat guitar doom, john carpenter-esque synth despair, witty no-fi punkish noise, genuine teenage love songs, total garbage, marching bands, etc. etc.

with the attention that providence has received for being a hub of louder-than-life, experimental music / art, this compilation tries to provide an updated snapshot of the current subterranean goings-on. it includes many of the artists who are responsible for bringing such acclaim and attention to this small community - brian chippendale (lightning bolt, black pus), mat brinkman, leif goldberg, jo dery, christopher forgues - while also highlighting some of the new and young artists who are taking things in different and exciting directions - russian tsarcasm, alberich, heart2heart, blue shift, summer city, byron house. there are also a handful of tracks featuring visiting artists (pedestrian deposit, brian miller and kevin shields…).

hand-packaged in a double-cd gatefold sleeve, with original illustrations and design by christopher forgues - aka cf, kites, paper radio, low tide, fantasy empire, etc. (his work can also be seen in comics anthologies kramer’s ergot, the ganzfeld, paper rodeo).

compiled and edited by geoff mullen.

edition of 1000 copies.
