| february 2010 release ; cd version of the october 2009 lp release (now o/p) replete with a bonus, 14-minute piece (listen to the sound-sample) ...
... brilliant set from robert “lichens” lowe, most recently seen out on the open road supporting om (both as an opening act & as a “third” ; contributing some ghostly vocals & assorted keyboard / guitar scatter to their increasingly eastern-themed doom-throb) ...
... rather than a set of rob’s now-trademark looped vocals, this one’s concerned with analogue synth & minimalism-inspired guitar patternage, ranging from the opener’s echoes of popol vuh, to the sliding, sky records-lineage “cyclamen”, the the pervasive “library music” feel of the majority of the second side (esp. the sonoton, kpm, and studio g “synth” libraries) ...
some of the best i’ve heard from rob, timed perfectly with contemporary synth-music’s shift away from straight tangerine dream-lineage drone-cycling into other areas ... highly recommended !!! |

| title : fazo iv: la kvalito de speguloj artist : robert a.a. lowe catalogue #: rbbd004file under : experimental, ambient, drone release date : 02/16/010 format : cd riyl : oneohtrix point never, cluster & eno, la düsseldorf, harmonia, john carpenter
on fazo iv: la kvalito de speguloj, robert aiki aubrey lowe (lichens, singer, 90 day men) constructs haunting, beautiful, at times hypnotic rhythms and melodies using synthesizers. his love of the warm, bubbling, physical sounds of the synthesizer permeates these seven songs, which seem simultaneously strangely familiar yet also somehow distant and alien.
fazo iv: la kvalito de speguloj (phase 4: the quality of mirrors) is a further extension of lowe’s exploration of sonic vocabularies and emotional landscapes. because the modes lowe utilizes are tonally and melodically universal to his ear, he has titled the album in the language of esperanto -- the universal language constructed to foster international understanding and peace. this notion of univeral understanding comes through in waves on fazo iv. there is a certain tranquility in these tracks -- something very meditative and therapeutic; a calming honesty that leads the mind inward and transcends language.
