late 2005 release (a professionally replicated compact disc) featuring the stooges’ steve mackay , along with members of the radon and soopa collectives. all-over-the-map meld of free jazz, electronics (kind of a mutated idm actually) , and noise. intricate and actually pretty appealing (considering that this could have easily wandered into “zorn” territory...)
soopa press release...
united scum soundclash

"united scum soundclash" is the outcome of a collaboration between the soopa and radon labels, and stands as a landmark in the history of both organizations.

for soopa (a label and collective based in porto, portugal, bringing together a variety of bands and musicians), this is the first venture into the field of album releases; for radon (founded in the usa, but now spreading across europe through their radon uropa subsidiary), this record marks the confirmation of their recent links with portugal.

the production of "united scum soundclash" began in the spring of 2004, when soopa members jonathan "cactus" juliel, miguel autoblack and filipe the banshee met radon's scott nydegger, leading to the idea of a collaborative album.

the music on "united scum soundclash" is the result of several hours of improvised sessions, which were then painstakingly sculpted into separate tracks through editing and processing by jonathan "cactus".

two guest musicians appear on three of the album's tracks: sax player steve mackay (stooges, violent femmes) appears on one track, and czech musician kamil kruta (a collaborator of the residents and lydia lunch, among others) sings on a further two.

since an album's title is usually a statement of intent, let's look further into the multiple meanings of "united scum soundclash". "soundclash" comes from the dub and reggae cultures and implies a sonic battle between two entities; however, the competitive nature of the original soundclashes is diluted by the word "united", hinting at the collaborative nature of this release. as for "scum", this refers to the way the original recordings were torn apart and regurgitated, becoming a kind of sonic scum.

as for the music... well, music is always hard to describe. "united scum soundclash" contains elements of free-jazz, electro acoustic music, noise, breakcore and electronica, but it isn't just a patchwork of styles; it is a unified whole.

co-released by soopa/radon studio, 2005.
