suni’ll be the same” compact disc

september 2007 release; the secondpop” album from the duo of chris townend (proprietor of sydney’s lovely bigjesusburger studios, also 1/2 of rand and holland) and oren ambarchi (currently tied with lasse marhaug for most titles involving him in the mms catalogue... what can i say? i’m a huge fan...)

whereas the first album was straight-up summertime sunshine jangly pop music, this adds slightly more “grit” to the mixes; little clicky sounds and background ambience, guitars are played in non-standard ways, etc... an obvious comparison would be to jim o’rourke’s drag city records (i.e. someone with a background in more outre stylings embracing the laurel canyon sound... but still keeping littlenoises & bits of abstraction in the mixes) but also the clientele (especially the reverb-heavy vocal delivery on most songs), even mid-period (i.e. pre-dad-rock) wilco.

a really, really nice record. i don’t listen to all that much contemporary pop music these days, mainly as i hear the majority of it as either redunant or lazy/throwaway... this is anything but; as meticulously assembled as oren’s touch-label records, just a little bit more “accessible” ...

lovely australianearly adopters” edition, housed in a huge fold-out poster sleeve... apparently this will also be out on staubgold on vinyl/cd in a few months...

sun
i’ll be the same
preservation

sun is the coupling of sound artist oren ambarchi and musician-producer chris townend. the pair have been kindred spirits for many years, with townsend being a sensitive and crucial ear in engineering ambarchi's landmark solo recordings. it was their shared love for expansive pop that led them to their first musical collaboration together as sun, released on staubgold in 2003. the self-titled debut was a laidback delight of many melodic charms and artful creation, as sweet as it was wry in its lyricism. those trademarks continue with "i'll be the same", though the songs here are more freewheeling pleasures where an unaffected sense of experimentalism breezes in.

tom carter / robert hortonmonsters of felt” compact disc

  • corsican hash (4:46)

  • tapebugs remember (6:35)
  • heavenly breakfast (13:31)
  • tombstone mind (4:06)
third album from the duo of charalambidestom carter & simultaneously everywhere/everyman robert horton, with guests michael shannon, brad & eden rose, and henry kuntz ...

i’d comment more on just how damn prolific these guys have been over the past few years if their output wasn’t so solid / surprising / non-repetitive and (let’s face it) ... great. tom’s elegiac guitar and robert’s experimental instruments / jerry-rigged electronic warble are certainly made to augment each other; that each piece here works a different mentality (gauzy drones, eastern-leaning acoustic improv, tape-machine meltdowns...) so well is testament to their versatility as musicians...

excellent stuff; no matter if this is your first time hearing these dudes or your 100th...
nice australian edition in a fold-out poster-sleeve...

tom carter & robert horton
monsters of felt
preservation

robert horton’s musical exploits are diverse, heady and spans over three decades. from his early punk days to joining various groups in pursuit of free jazz, drone and even psychedelic hillbilly, horton is happily hard to pin down. he also makes his own instruments. one found regularly across the 30-plus releases he’s been involved with since 2005 is the ‘boot’, a four-stringed instrument that plays like an otherworldly dobro or slide guitar.

tom carter has been a lightning rod-like figure for the american psychedelic, folk and experimental underground scenes since forming one of the country’s central cosmic travellers in charalambides. over the past 5 years carter has spread his wings into solo work and collaborations with the likes of bardo pond, tower recordings and sonic youth’s thurston moore. however, it’s the pairing with robert horton that emerges most frequently in his busy schedule, as they continue to foster their pairing into a singular kind of chemistry.

their most developed work thus far, monsters of felt hits a mesmerising zone both urgent and lulling at once. the radiating undertow of horton’s sonic manipulations – including sound sources from cassettes, field recordings, computer, bass and the ‘boot’ – accompanies carter’s re-routing of american guitar traditions into mantras of trance and white light. the set also features appearances from kindred spirits and free-folk favourites brad and eden rose, along with eastern instrument journeymen henry kuntz and michael shannon. it all adds up to monsters of felt being yet another exciting and compelling step for two most intrepid musicians.

unknown music ii – transwarp meditation
preservation

the passion for exploratory acoustic music currently in grip has been with steffen basho-junghans for a long time. based in berlin, steffen has been one of the most searching artists in the ever-increasingly loose folk idiom for over two decades. his work on the six and twelve-string guitar makes him a modern-day counterpart to great trailblazers john fahey and robbie basho, from who he takes his name as a creative talisman.

while experimentation is a feature of steffen’s playing, the soul of acoustic guitar tradition is there in equal measure. with boundless imagination, his technique takes in american folk, eastern raga and western classical harmonics but also resonates with the inspiring power of free jazz. his unknown music series feature what he describes as his most personal excursions yet, containing some of his most stirring and unique compositions.

while some pieces are relentlessly intense, there’s an undeniable beauty at their core, found as equally in those that curl out with complex, but softer melodic measure. the percussive qualities of his sound heighten its hypnotic feel in a space created from, and for, pure feeling above all.

unknown music ii is much more than just a set of psychedelic overtures. it’s a work of deep spiritual vision that comes from having travelled far down an exceptionally individual path.

rand and holland
tomorrow will be like today

tomorrow will be like today is the debut work from sydney’s rand and holland.

tomorrow will be like today is a pop album that thrives on atmosphere. built on stark, disarming melodies, its songs find the balance between epic and intimate, carried by brett’s deeply resonant voice and direct, unaffected lyricism. with precursors in acts like the flaming lips, yo la tengo, elliott smith and (smog), tomorrow will be like today is both emotionally direct and full of dreamy undercurrents, grasping classic pop feels while always searching for more colours from other musical sources.

rand and holland began as the solo project for sydneysider brett thompson, who since recording the album has formed a band to play live, featuring members of brett’s pop peers in sun. tomorrow will be like today was produced by both brett and sun’s chris townend, who holds a diverse list of credits to his name, including darren hanlon and the bird.

tomorrow will be like today is a rich first offering, making for a new and exciting musical presence in australia.
