i love any record that’s impossible to peg & this is a shining example. it’s not quite an instrumental post-rock lineage album (too much sound-research), far too melodic and queasy for the serious capital-a avant-garde, too organic to be electronica... let’s just say it doesn’t live on any one genre-map and move on...

made up from the ashes of the band pele (of whose output i’m now not-so blissfully unaware), cocob features jon mueller (known for his fantastic crouton label and micro-improb collabs. w/folk like asmus tietchens, aranos, and bhob rainey), jon minor (of the topscore label), jim schoenecker (aka breakcore denom pressboard), and chris rosenau (of whom i don’t know anything about other than that he played on the aranos disc and was in pele as well).

i’ve met all of these guys (except for maybe chris) on separate occasions (including when greg, sebastien, and i played in jon minor’s living room a few months back) and they seem like affable people, which is always good. i just wish i knew more about this project when we were all in the same room as i would have loved to grill them for information on their working methods, as these are some highly unorthodox songs and i just, being inquisitive, you know, want to know how it was done. but then again maybe it’s better that i don’t know anything about it...
polyvinyl press release...
embodying multiple formats, customer is the new release from collections of colonies of bees. from the design elements to the music itself, customer is by far and away the most unique, ambitious project polyvinyl records has ever had the pleasure of releasing.

following the demise of pele in 2004, collections of colonies of bees and pele co-founders chris rosenau and jon mueller brought aboard jim schoenecker and jon minor, who was also a member of pele. the inclusion of other members marked a new stage in the bees' project, resulting in a more stylistically broad, more comprehensive sound. customer documents this direction.

recording with the full band in the studio, collections of colonies of bees developed "different versions" of the material for customer through computer and electronic manipulation. whereas previous bees' releases had been available only in small print runs through various labels, the band decided to contact the japan label some of us and polyvinyl records to aid in the largest bees' endeavor to date.

the cd version of customer on polyvinyl is a mixture of electronic and live tracks with a blue background cover featuring a large white "h" similar to the sign used to denote hospitals on united states' roadways. the actual cd face features a red "+" which is the sign for first aid in the united states.

“ the fourth full length bees record(s), and the most ambitious conceptual bees record to date. from it's inception at the palm tavern in milwaukee on july 15th, 2003, to it's final completion during the month of september 2004, the scope of this record grew with every month it was being recorded. beginning with jon minor, chris rosenau, jon mueller's source drum recordings, one creepy watcher, and bottles and bottles of vodka at the render farm, and ending with recording rehearsed interpretations of these initial songs with ryan weber of decibully at spaceship goodtimes, this project evolved over one year into the three records described below that are "customer".

10 tracks. 50% computer arrangements +50% unaltered live recordings. 90% fun.
