| debut disc/release by the u.k.’s jim backhouse - known to most of the sentient music-following populus via his co-hosting of resonance-fm’s “you are hear” program(me) & his fortnightly dj sets at the roving kosmische club.
“functionary” inhabits the same mutant-swamp once visited by the likes of raymond scott, dat politics, dymaxion, pierre henry/michel colombier, etc... which is to say it’s in very good company. so much of the obscure american/french/english library music & proto-beep/strangeness that i’m always going on about seems to have filtered through mr. backhouse’s bloodstream and into his own music (hell... the “sample credits” inside speak volumes: bbc radiophonic workshop, die tödliche doris...)
while, admittedly, i’m not feeling much of the on/off dancefloor “grid” electronic music being made these days; a certain backwards-looking nature coupled with jim’s moxie & the super-short-shock tracks make this a warm & wooly ride.
recommended especially for fans of recent felix kubin (i sense a kindred spirit), but for prety much anyone who likes their thump cut with a healthy dose of mystery b(l)eepage. |
