illusion of safetyprobe” compact disc

  • probe (1) (18:18)
  • probe (2) (25:30)
  • probe (3) (9:23)
  • probe (4) (4:59)
january 2010 release ; notable as one of jim o’rourke’s first recorded outings (predated only by a batch of regional cassette releases, the “ground below above our heads” lp & the “tamper” & “disengage” disc/sets) it’s also (in my mind at least) the finest ios outing, due to the meshing of jim’s nascent musique concrète leanings (the pacing belies a great love of luc ferrari, certainly) and dan’s more visceral / event-oriented sensibilites & humor (at times bordering on inaudibility, the predominance of sudden, jarring transitions by the end becomes the piece’s reigning leitmotif) ...

amazing to think was released 18 years ago ; in many ways jim & dan’s love-letter to the whole ina-grm universe & something of a classic ; highly recommended !!!

artist: illusion of safety
title: probe

format: full-length cd (58 minutes)
label: perdition plastics
catalogue number: per 012

this is the first re-issue of illusion of safety’s probe since its only appearance in 1992. in a limited edition of 500 copies, perdition plastics is proud to reintroduce this notable work of contemporary composition. veteran provocateurs, illusion of safety, examine an audio landscape found between youth and innocence, manufactured entertainment, and suburban complacency. using a pastiche of field recordings and suggestively composed elements, dan burke and jim o’rourke strikingly capture ambivalence and their own personal interactions within this environment.

probe was one of several early, pinnacle works to foreshadow the unique and prolific audio fingerprint of renowned producer/player, jim o’rourke, when still a compositional student in chicago. this release fits neatly into o’rourke’s recent issuing of forgotten and initial recordings.

as the constant center of illusion of safety since 1983, dan burke has consistently edited and evolved more than 20 cds from ambience to electronica, from sound collage to post-industrial noise. the complexity and restraint found within probe marked a compelling new direction for burke and a great many others influenced by his music.

illusion of safety has been released by such labels as die stadt, experimedia, silent, soleilmoon, staalplaat, tesco, and waystyx among others. collaborations include cheer-accident, thomas demuzio, kevin drumm, ben vida, and others.

probe will be of interest to those who enjoy hafler trio, throbbing gristle, luc ferrari, etc.

2002 release ; this fine disc of minimal / beguiling electro-acoustic pieces (composed between 1996 & 1998) from ralf wehowsky was to be the final release on kurt griesch’s perdition plastics ... before he started the label up again in late 2009 / early 2010 (see above/below for the new issues of the kevin drumm & illusion of safety discs) ...

regardless, this was an excellent note to close things out on & one of rlw’s finest recorded moments ...

mimeomusic in movement electronic orchestra” compact disc

  • nickelsdorf 5 (17:21)
  • nickelsdorf 3 (7:20)
  • den haag -2.2 (6:06)
  • den haag -1 (6:53)
  • den haag 1 (8:07)
  • wuppertal 1.2 (19:20)
1999 release ; domestic issue of the grob-labelqueue” disc, itself the debut from this keith rowe organized “orchestra” of electro-acoustic improvisors - an interchangable lineup (which differs from track to track here) involving peterpitarehberg, gert-jan prins, marcus schmickler, jérôme noetinger, cor fuhler, thomas lehn, christian fennesz, justin bennett, phil durrant, yannis kyriakides, and richard barrett, as recorded in germany & holland back in 1997 ...

these early meetings of the group have a certain “go for it” vibe that, imho, was smoothed out in later concerts (take it or leave it - personally i’m into the high percentage of “pile-ups” herein) ... but then again, aside from thom lehn (who sounds fantastic throughout - listen to the sound-sample for a few choice bleeps), i have a hard time making out most of the individual players, due to the number of redunant software & hardware processing & sampling algorithms being used at once throughout (remember, this was 1997 - i mean the g3 mac powerbooks could barely handle a single 16-bit 44.1k i/o stream w/ real-time processing ; much has changed in the intervening years) ...

while not the best representation of this particular group, it was most certainly the first disc of eai that many of us in the states got to hear, and such as it has a “time capsule” place in my heart ...

rafael toralaeriola frequency” compact disc

  • cyclorama lift 2 (46:31)
  • cyclorama lift 4 (20:16)
october 1998 release ; very glad to have this early disc of rafael’s filter-resonance / feedback music in stock, as it rates amongst kosugi’s “catchwave” and most of david berhman’s 70s/i> music as a classic example of the genre ...

working solely with “empty circuits,” rafael coaxes a pleasant stream of harmonic-series-lineage overtones, catching the results in a pair of delay-lines, accentuating and multiplying the joint resonances into these two extended portraits ... some of his finest non-guitar work ...
perdition plastics press release...

notes by rafael toral:

the exploration of resonance from the guitar world as in wave field took me to later finding myself working with pure electronic resonance, the material of this piece. cyclorama lift is performed with an empty circuit, basically a feedback loop using as main instruments two 8-second delays and a 4-band parametric equalizer. there's no input, the loop is constantly nourishing and digesting itself.

january 2010 release ; new edition of the classic 1997 release, featuring “guitar”, “recorded directly to tape in fall, 1996” ...

upon its release (and even now, still, to some extent) this was a divisive title, not quite fitting in w/ the time’s reigning “lowercase” aesthetic, nor the harsh noise, metal, or digital music scenes with which kevin eventually found allegiance ... consisting instead of scrabbly figures run through an upper-threshold gate, then processed with heavy filtering and gain-based effects. there are certainly parallels between some of the harsher segments (listen to the sound-sample for a terse segment - book-ended by silence for at least a minute in either direction) of “sheer hellish miasma” ; the final track’s 17 minutes of glacial drift hedged with at first subliminal, then overbearing dat-tape distortions reminds of some of his more recent collaborative work ...

a great disc, a challenge for sure, but i’m amazed at how much more permissive we’ve all become to what was undoubtedly the most “out-there” thing i had ever heard back in97 ... highly recommended !!!

artist: kevin drumm
title: kevin drumm (self-titled)

format: full-length cd (56 minutes)
label: perdition plastics
catalogue number: per 007.2

this is the first re-issue of kevin drumm’s self-titled premiere solo recording since its original appearance in 1996. perdition plastics is honored to make drumm’s foundational work available again in a limited edition of 500 copies.

kevin drumm is an established and respected composer and improvisational player. he emerged as a notable presence in the thriving chicago avant music scene of the 90s. this release introduced drumm with seven tracks of improvised, advanced tabletop guitar. recorded directly to digital audio tape without edits or overdubs, drumm evokes a powerful new perspective in guitar sound and method. by contrasting sparseness and complexity, drumm links improvised new music with electronic composition. this sedate, monochromatic package helped further obscure listener expectations.

april 1997 release ; perhaps a tougher sell than “while” as this one consists of jones’ “torch songs,” played largely on solo piano & sung with a gusto that recalls robert wyatt inasmuchasitdoes joe jackson ...

cd edition, nicely enough, comes with a little paper envelope inside full of little printed sheets & detritus ...

thymme joneswhile” compact disc

  • open (10:23)
  • find (8:53)
  • taken (7:28)
  • empty (9:34)
  • give (6:52)
april 1996 release ; a series of “piano quartets” from thymme jones (known for his stalwart involvement/leadership in such 90s chicagoland ensembles as cheer-accident, brise-glace, and you! fantastic) recorded between 1990 and 1994 on 4-track cassette ...

while there are nods to charlemagne palestine et.al’s version of minimal, interlocking figure-music, the rhythmic structure of pieces such as “taken” and “give” belie jones’ “day job” as a percussionist, landing them closer to something like ligeti’s “continuum” ...

always thought this an under-rated disc, often confused with jones’ more overtly “song” based “career move” ...
