"after dark cravings" starts out with a voice saying ''hello earthlings'' which is an alien mistaking a candy bar for the higher life form inhabitants of earth's soft analog air minimal lo-fi satanic ritual resinated at the bottom of a plastic bong. ashes of the charles manson family band. a flash of memories of a grateful dead tape playing after you picked up a psycho hitchhiker. jim carrey self-consciousness about his new nose job at the oscars, being a vessel for the voice of the omnipresent leviathan comprised of lost souls stranded naked on the shoulder of the fast lane. oesb-41 julian lynch "orange you glad" lp "orange you glad" is the debut full-length lp from julian lynch, following a string of self-released cd-r's and a recent split 7" with his childhood friend and frequent collaborator matt mondanile of ducktails on the underwater peoples label. a talented multi-instrumentalist,  julian has had a busy summer playing countless shows both solo and as a member of predator vision, ducktails, and real estate offshoot alex bleeker & the freaks. this album is comprised of 4-track home recordings made in his hometown of ridgewood, new jersey and also in madison, wisconsin where he is a graduate student in ethnomusicology. his interest in indian & south asian music blossomed several years ago when he was living in washington, d.c. and working for smithsonian folkways recordings. this exposure to their vast library of world music has informed his output, and he blends instruments such as harmonium & tabla with guitar-rock instrumentation. also of note is his use of circular breathing techniques on the clarinet - often a focal point during his meditative live shows.

oesb-18 kodama "turning leaf migrations" lp brand new release - limited to 500 - this one's a monster - one of the best oesb releases to datekodama is the ongoing recording project of two well-known visual and sound artists - hitoshi kojo and michael northam - and this is their first widely available release as a duo. recorded in various improbable locations whenever they crossed paths over the course of several years and then finally edited and assembled in a cluttered garage in the west side of indianapolis. there is a decidedly more improvisational feel and crisp psychedelic aura to these recordings when compared to their other work and one can hear the influence of ghedalia tazartes in how the various recordings were stitched together. to quote hitoshi kojo: we are the spirit of forest. our howling has been offered to the many goddesses of the valleys. teething our emptiness they, licking the stars, until white holes appear in our sky through them towards regenerative guides of the tonal-morphic omni-verses.   using found objects to seduce voices from unlikely sources as well as traditional instruments of wind, wires and wood. kodama weaves between emotional poetry and dynamic forces of noises. the recordings have a strong atmosphere of each location - the top of a mountain in switzerland, a campground in ohio, lofoten island in norway, the arctic circle in finland, niagara falls, etc. it includes a lot of the dirts of the raw recordings, but also incredibly beautiful moments such as the session with an owl in a slovenian forest, an alpine summit singing meditation under the vast galaxy, and an encounter with the small people through strange ritual... limited pressing of 500 copies. covers & insert printed on 2-color offset press with illustrations and design by hitoshi kojo.

oesb-09 pussygutt "sea of sand" double lp 'pussygut' is an old western slang term for the violin or fiddle -- as the strings used to be made from cat intestines. pussygutt is the duo of blake green and brittany mcconnell from boise, idaho. they have created a distinctive flavor of outsider 'doom' with unique instrumentation that coincidentally features lots of violin (brittany is a classically-trained violinist), along with synths, gongs, bowed cymbals, crystal goblets, organ, drums, clay pots, forest sounds, ducks, various electronics, tons of feedback and humming bass-amp, and as if all that's not enough, there's a secret weapon up their collective sleeve -- the tractor!! the group holed up for nine months in their studio experimenting and composing the four side-long pieces for this double album. they are joined on sea of sand by seattle's garek druss (of a story of rats and ear venom) as collaborator/3rd member. garek contributed his experiments with field recordings, repetition, electronics, and sound-collage to the proceedings. the music? extremely heavy. deeply weird. a friend of the band coined the term 'soundtrack ficianarcoleptics' to describe who this album will most appeal to and indeed, the entire album is largely cinematic in its approach. the 'riffs' & drums mostly stay hidden in their caves, venturing outside on a few brief excursions to catch some moonlight and provide punctuation to the drones and other assimilated madness. limited edition of 550 hand-assembled copies.

'the heart sutra' opens and is inspired by the 'sutra of the heart of transcendent wisdom,' which was delivered by buddha 2,500 years ago. it is a beautiful, yet solemn work that reverberates from within, as susan strums those magical strings. the title track, 'and i await the resurrection of the pedal steel guitar,' was inspired by messiaen's 'et expecto ressurectionum mortuorum.' it is a near 16-minute epic of stirring, haunting sounds. each note is stretched out and floats like a spirit on the wind in a graveyard. ms. alcorn's approach to the pedal steel guitar is completely unique and she doesn't quite sound like anyone else. if one is patient enough, they will realize that she makes every note and space count.
